Wireless Router Settings to connect to android tablet? - HD2 General

Thought I would post here as people here (HTC Hd2) might have an idea.
I have HTC HD2 running WM6.5 I'm normally able to connect to various laptops using the HTC wireless router no problems.
I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 10.1 (Android) and it can not see the HTC - I note from other threads that this was because the HTC creates an AD Hoc network and android can't see these? (don't really understand the technical issues there!)
I have tried manually setting up a wireless network using settings on my laptop when that is connected but the Tab did not like the settings I used.
Any advice on how to manually setting the network up?

not sure if it'll work for you, but you could try 'WiFi Thether' app

WIFI tethering is from an android OS phone that creates a wifi hotspot that you can then hook up your wifi laptop to.
HTC HD2 phone running wm6.5 has an ad hoc network and that is what the android Tablet can't see.
So I need to work out how the android tablet can see the wm6.6 ad hoc network

oops, somehow did not realise it's the opposite direction, shame on me for overseeing the obvious...
anyway, I had no problem connectiong my CM variation to ad-hoc network on Win XP laptop, so maybe your problem is device-specific,
maybe you'll find some useful ideas here (post 11 ?)

This is a BIG Deal!!

This phone doesn't support ad hoc wifi connections? I'm currently on travel overseas and I can't seem to share an Internet connection with my laptop (connected via LAN) or iPhone 3GS (local 3G service). Has anyone been able to detect an ad hoc wifi network with this phone.
I can detect ad hoc networks with 3rd party wifi apps on the marketplace but when I attempt to connect, it directs me to the general wifi settings screen where the network is gone!!
Anyone else with this issue?
Did you ever see that it was an international phone?
WTF?? I'm talkin about a Wifi connection here buddy...lol. The EVO 4G doesn't detect or connect to ad hoc wifi networks. That's the topic...
while i dont know if it does or doesnt...i could believe it...because there is a few phones out there that dont - blackberry is one.
The wireless tether app for Android makes it into an ad hoc device.
But the problem is that it won't DETECT an ad-hoc device. Interesting. So if I had, say a hero with WiFi tether enabled, I wouldn't be able to see the WiFi with my EVO?
I don't connect to ad-hoc networks myself, unless I"m trying to tether something (the only use I can see.) Interesting that the EVO can't see them though, they should still show up..huh.
Seems to be some type of security feature on the device (WiFi Scanner app detects) that prevents it from detecting ad hoc wireless networks. My PS3 also has the same issue. Just wanted to point it out the issue...perhaps we need to root to manually connect?
just to be clear, you're trying to share your laptops internet with your Evo?
Yes, the laptop has Internet access via LAN and I am using the built in ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) Wifi Sharing on Windows Vista. Every other device I've had before had no issue detecting the network...I can see the access point right now on my iPhone and iPod Touch :-/
Found this workaround:
http://www.soligard.com/technology/how-to-connect-htc-hero-to-ad-hoc-wifi-network/
I'll try this later and report back.
I don't know if I'm experiencing the same problem but maybe someone can tell what I'm doing wrong. I rooted my phone by unrevoked and installed the Android-Wifi-Tether program. I've activated the program and it's sending out a signal. I then use my Windows Vista comp. to located it and it shows my phone as an "Ad-Hoc Network" when I connect to it, it says your computer is not configured for this. I'm not sure now what I should do, is there a problem with my EVO, or this something I need to do with the computer.
OP you are absolutely correct. I actually was trying the exact example you stated. I had created an ad-hoc wireless hotspot/network via Wireless Tether App on my Hero and my EVO just plain did not see it. It saw a million other networks that were much farther away, but not my Hero that was right next to it. This is unfortunate. Hopefully a workaround is found soon.
A lot of devices don't connect via an Ad Hoc network... which makes me wonder what its purpose even is :/ One reason I submitted the idea (true wifi hotspot) I did to the WP7 app contest.
This is what made me return my Archos 5 Android tablet and stick to my iPod Touch.
My scenario, i have a Sprint Treo and an iPod Touch (and iPad as well) and usually turn my Treo into a wifi router via wmwifirouter and use iPod Touch this way. Been doing this for years (with other devices too like the Nokia N800/N810), and wanted to test out Android. I got the Archos 5 tablet and was saddened not to be able to use my Treo's ad-hoc wifi. Back it went.
It seems that Android devices do not connect to ad-hoc wifi networks. Shame indeed. Also i think the Zune HD does not connect to ad-hoc as well.
Is it an O.S specific issue?

Where Can i download the built in Infrastructure WIFI tethering app for HD2?

Hi, im in need of some assistance. I have a new android device, the Archos 5IT. my phone is the Tilt 2. i have been unable to get my tilt 2 tethered to it thru wifi. reason being that the xda wifi router app uses adhoc mode. the archos will only see Infrastructure connections. Someone on the archos forum said the HD2 has built in a wifi tethering app that is infrastructure mode. Can someone plz direct me to that app or another wifi tethering app that uses Infrastructure mode only? also, free apps...lol thnkx in advance i figure if i download that app, ill be good, and wont have to take this device back. plus its giving me probs trying to connect thru bt also. lol FIGURES
If you can't find a free one, I recommend WMWifiRouter (v2 and above). It lets you connect multiple devices via Wifi (infrastructure style) and Bluetooth, as well as work as a USB modem and a USB Wifi dongle.
If you have Omarket installed, just download "Mobile Wi-Fi Router." It works GREAT!
Sorry about reviving an old thread. I've been searching and trying to find this exact solution, but neither of the ones listed here are doing "Infrastructure" mode. I'm currently testing WMWifiRouter (v2.0 - build 1502, downloaded directly from their site today) and when I set up the wifi connection, it only gives an option for Ad-Hoc (or none - which is for connecting to another access-point).
Am I missing something with WMWifiRouter, or is there any other app at all that will do Infrastructure mode? I don't mind having to buy something, I just need it working.
Thanks!

Sorry if I am not clear with your issues above.
But, Winmo 6.5 in HD2, has a native wifi tethering application.
There is an option menu (in Comm Manager) to turn on the Wifi Router.
This will make your HD2 as an Access Point. It can accept 5 devices.
Cheers..
Yes but only in adhoc mode, not in infrastructure mode, which appears to be needed for connecting some devices like psp and my new HTC flyer!
Same problem with GT 10.1 and HTC HD2
I have the wifi router program but it's not working with my galaxy tab 10.1, how can i tell if its adhoc or infrastructure signal?

Hi, I am researching this as well, and here is what I have found so far.
1. Android does not currently support/connect to ad-hoc WiFi, only Infrastructure mode.
2. If your Android tablet device can not see the WiFi from your phone hotspot but a PC Can, then it is probably ad-hoc, as my WinMo HTC HD2 is.
3. I have an Asus Transformer tablet with Android 3.1 and this can not see my WiFi from the WiFi hotspot settings, but my PC can see it and connect to the HD2.
4. If there is an Android ROM for your phone, (XDA Forums) that will run from the SD card, you can boot into that and use the WiFi hotspot (Tethering) from the Android ROM. This seems to work fine on my setup.
Hope this helps
really would rather not root if at all possible
since i live in fear of ending up with a very expensive brick (by messing up rooting my xoom) - has anyone come up with a way to make the winmo htc hd2 send out an infrastructure wifi signal?

Simple answer is no. Winmo 6.5 will not do infrastructure wifi hotspot, no matter whether native Winmo app or a 3rd party app (i.e., WMWifirouter). You're going to have to do what I'm doing with my HD2. Go thru the learning process of installing an Android build on your SD card, and then boot into Android. You've very little risk of bricking the HD2 if you read carefully and follow the guides. [However, these guides are definitely written by geeks, not editors who write and re-write to be explicitly clear.] Supposedly, the Android Wifi router is infrastructure, but I've not yet gotten to that point in my own process. The first one I tried to install (AmeriCanAndroid) didn't complete booting up successfully, so I tried another Android build (MIUI), but in it I'm not finding a wifi tethering app. And, in it, the Market app is crashing. So, I'm now on the search for a 3rd Android build. The payoff is big (wifi tethering to my Viewpad 7 tablet), so I persevere. Good luck to you on your journey.

Anyone use WEP or a Pocket PC w/ wifi sharing to their Tab?

I can't seem to get my Tab to recognize the WEP WiFi internet sharing network that is on my Tilt2 (Rhodium) WMPPC. My netbook, my two full-sized notebooks, and my desktop all can simultaneously connect to the WM phone (in fact I am right now on this netbook to post this), but for whatever reason the Galaxy Tab can't even find the WEP network my WM phone is generating much less connect to it.
The entire reason I bought the Tab was to connect to my WM phone like the phone was a mobile wireless router. ???
Anyone had this issue? I'm sure a number of you came from a WM phone and used wifi router feature. And the Tab looks like it supports WEP networks and encryption.
Update: installing a warlogger style applet on the Tab called "Wifi Tracker" finds the WM-generated WEP nework. So is it Samsuing's native wifi setup that blows?
It finds my WM network as [WEP][IBSS].

I know this doesn't help you one iota, but for what it's worth, my Tab can pick up HTC Desire as a mobile Hotspot without issue. I normally use WPA2, but I just tried using WEP and I had no problems either.
So, I don't think there's anything intrinsically "wrong" with the Tab, though I have a Euro Tab running the very latest JMA firmware which may be significant.
If I had an WinMo phone to test with, I'd give it a go, but I don't, so I can't!
I presume that your WinMo phone is created a proper access point, and not an adhoc (point-to-point) network?
EDIT: Ok, just googled and found that IBSS means it is an ad-hoc network, and not an access point which means that "out of the box" Android devices can't attach to it.
This thread may help you.

Dave

Wifi Connection shared as a Wifi Router

Hi,
as there are no threads about this (i havent found anything), i will post a new one.
my main question is: is it possible to get a wifi connection on your phone and share this connection at the same time through wifi (so you get a wifi hotspot or whatever)? (android, windows mobile, windows phone -> whatever, got a HD2)
it works on multiple computers with windows 7, but i never got how to do that with ma HD2.
hopefully,
sallal
EDIT: forgot the [Q] thing, sry

they're are many apps that can do this, just search WIFI tether in the market (android), IDK about WM7 though.
For android you can also run CM7 which has tethering built into it. I use it and it works like a charm, it's fast too.
Sorry for my question ,but with this program i can use my tablet as a router?
I have 3G so i can use this connection for internet and WIFI for make my tablet a router?
the app allows you to "tether"/use your device as a router. SO yes.
The are CMInternetSharing package that is used to share internet connection from a Mobile (that we get using GPRS/3G) as a WiFi Router to others...
If you have a WiFi Connection that your mobile is consuming then what is the need for re-sharing same connection from mobile?
Let me know if I am not sure about the question
Thanks.
Am no expert but i think this is true...
A wireless device can either be used as a client or as a router, you would need 2 wireless interfaces to do what you are looking for. When the tether apps start they configure your wireless interface as a router... I dont believe it can be running as both types at once.
but you most defenetly could use your 3g or whatever cell signal you have and offer it thru a wifi interface, you must have root access.
Cheers
maybe there is a way
you could switch the wifi with a 3g lookalike so 3g uses your wifi and then download a wifi tether i am looking for this quit a time and i diddn't found anything but this is al theory
I do it with a stock app of my device, it's calls "3g mobile's wifi point"

hmm that would be a thing i should look at...
i always used on windows 7 "connectify me", a program made for taking wireless internet connection or LAN and sharing it at the same time as a router.
the virtual wifi miniport is used for this i suppose.
maybe there is something like the virtual miniport to manage in windows mobile or android?

I use one from the XDA forums, search for wifi router
It works great on my HD2 with WINMO
sir,i have already mentioned.....try "mhotspot" easily converts ur lap/pc into wifi hotspot(n/w will be detected by android mobiles, worked for my ACE) its better than connectify because..we dont need to install it..and soo we can over come protocol related problems and system instability issues

[Q] my iconia could not find my htc HD2 wifi router.

iconia tab a500 Cant find/connect to 'hd2 as wifi router'. But Laptops find and connect to my 'hd2 as wifi router'.
I did not reach the connection limit (only the iconia).
Tried different roms and i still get the same "other devices can connect but not the iconia "
appreciate any input.
It might be because the HD2 is creating a wifi Ad-Hoc network and android can't connect to those for wifi. Other than that, not too sure.
is your HD2 running windows or android ?
I don't own one, but elsewhere on these forums saw reference that the HD2 does ad-hoc networking when it acts as the router.
You need to do the wpa_supplicant fix on your tablet to be able to use it. The same file that fixes the Xoom works on our A500's.
