Hey,
I have been following XDA since I bought my Xperia play R800i.
I know about rooting, rooted my phone twice, bricked once ><
but now that I'm living in Canada I needed to change to R800a.
It's a Rogers phone where the start up shows Rogers splash screen,
few Rogers Apps and so on. Fastbooting it isn't possible, but it's a sim card phone.
So i'm wondering if putting something like CM7 onto it possible and workable for 3G?
and how exactly would I do that?
and if there is any problem, is there any way to revert?
Thanks for any help
Well all the Rogers phones are locked down so cm7 won't be possible without an unlocked bootloader, they can be unlocked for a small fee just pm Alejandrissimo and he can do it. Once that is taken care of you can install recovery and all that fancy stuff and going from cm7 back to stock will be a breeze. Its well worth it to give Alejandrissimo a shout to have bootloader unlocked I did it this past weekend it took like 5 minutes alot cheaper than buying a new phone

The R800a is a GSM phone like any other. So if you get your bootloader unlocked like the above poster said, just treat it like your R800i. There will be no diffrence

This is probably a stupid question but is there an issue with unlocking a Desire HD from Vodafone UK? I was looking for code websites and one for instance said they couldn't supply codes for Desire HDs and Desire Zs etc...
If this is possible are there any recommendations for the UK?
Just ring vodaphone and tell em you wanna use a foreign sim when you go abroad they should give you unlock code

I just unlocked mine here in Australia (from Vodaphone).
Maybe there is a similar site in the uk
hxxps://unlock.vodafone.com.au/voila/handsetunlock/self-service.html?method=selectService
Mine was free to unlock.
Now just to work out how to get rid of the Voda bootscreen as my system folder is still read only after perm-root and using Root Explorer.
Cheers
I should add that I'm not a Vodafone customer - bought it from eBay...
Worst case the seller said he could call them up which I though was quite amiable...
I thought all Vodafone handsets came unlocked?

Mine is. Just tried an o2 SIM, worked perfectly.
chrisa86, please don't think I assume ur dumb but are you certain that it's locked? Because I've been on vodafone for quite some time now and mine always came lock free and happy I read smwr there's even some EU laws now against sim-locking phones that expensive ( correct me if im wrong ).
If after all that's the case, I suggest mancuk29's solution. Call, be nice and charming and they'll give u the unlock code.
gud luck

I think you have to S-OFF your Desire HD, this will allow you to read/write ALL flash
Maybe a fool question but let's assume that we have got a locked DHD (whether Vodafone or something else) and we could not get unlock code from carrier.
In this case, If we root + S-off + recovery + flash a new rom does this transaction make it unlocked?
No, sorry. SIM lock is very different.
AndyCr15, can u elaborate on that. What animal exactly simlock is?
Sorry, can't elaborate as I don't know how it works. All I can say is SIM unlock usually (always that I know of) has to be done using a code from a site or eBay. It's not part of the ROM.
Wow I did not know that Andy. Thanks for the heads up. So should be stay away from locked version.

Ha... I don't currently have the phone (should come tomorrow) but seller has now found out it isn't actually SIM locked... problem solved.
I did however use a code website to unlock my old G2 Hero so my girlfriend can get away from her old Samsung Jet...

Not in OZ. Mine was definately carrier locked to VHA. I went through the 'online' process and it was free. If I had of rang them on the phone to do it it would have cost me $75.
That's easy money for a company that sells phones to people with no idea, and as they believe, no option - whats online mean ??

Yeah done all that (new to Android) but still dont have r/w in the system folder. I can live with it though cause my phone is never off. It's summer, I will work on it when I am out of the pool.
Cheers for the response mate.
Now to find reasons to flash a cust ROM ?? other than cause I can. I am liking the ***** just the way she is at the moment. My car goes fast, I still cant work out why my phone needs to go faster than it does..

t-mobile UK sent me an unlock code for my DHD in the first week FOC i just asked for one ....
Is there anyone working on hacking the bootloader for us users that have sim-locked devices? I mean it would be a shame if only the sim unlocked devices got custom roms.
So if I sim unlock my phone the bootloader can be unlocked?
Sent from my R800a using XDA Premium App
Simply said: no.
For the current method of unlocking SE will look at an internal database to see if your phone is allowed to be unlocked after wich you'll get a special unlock code.
Can't some developers see how this process works and try to replicate it to sim-locked devices?
Is the bootloader just locked? or signed as well?
They would probably need to discover a whole new way to unlock the bootloader as there is both no unlockcode avaible and the locked bootloaders can't connect to the software that unlocks them.
As there would be less drive to unlock the locked bootloaders then with devices that are always bootlocked and the fact that the x10 took very long to hack I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.
Then again, I'm not one of those devs who seem to be able to do things that look like magic to me.
I got my Play a few weeks back, its sim locked to T Mobile UK. I cant get the phone to connect to fastboot (because its sim locked I know that) but the SE bootloader site gave me a unlock code. Do u think its at all possible for this phone to be sim unlocked somehow? My guess is no but its worth asking.

Can't they see how the x10 bootloader got hacked and then try it for the x10?

That is quite strange. Are you sure they sent you a code? I have never tried the website but it does seem strange.
i receive mine in a couple days. ill let u guys know. i bought mine from someone that got it free from google io. he says its unbranded and factory unlocked already.
@RacecarBMW yeah I have the bootloader unlock code saved on my laptop just incase I need it for any reason. The box is a GSM box with no T Mobile markings on it, but the phone is sim locked. When I hold down search and connect to USB the phone just charges, I tried both cables that cane with the play and a couple I already have but it always had the same outcome.

Is there maybe something in the build.prop that could be changed to enable fastboot? Or is that something that isn't included with sim locked phones?

charlieb620 seems to be the only dev in here but he already has an unlocked phone. We need to wait and get someone in here who can answer all these questions. Right now theirs nothing but questions. Once the US gets the play the demand for a unlocked bootloader will be huge and we will start seeing more devs jump on this.
Hi there,
I have been looking to unlock my Rogers sony ericsson xperia x10a so I can send it to a friend in another country for over a month.
I havent been successful using the sim unlocking code systems. I have tried three different websites.
So now Im just looking to use usb unlocking. its better if it de-brands the phone also so i can use the latest software update and not the one rogers provides.
Please help me with this. thanks

Unlocking will not debrand or visa versa. They are completely different. Use the Flash Tool to debrand, which is free. I don't know of any way to unlock yourself with usb. I think you need the code, which costs money.

I'm in the same boat. I have no problem with paying the money, but the 3 different brick and mortar places I've used can't unlock the phone, and the 5+ online sites that say that they can give me an unlock code, return my money and say that it's not possible.
Is there any way of unlocking this phone at all?

Thanks forbthe info. I dont mind if I have to pay or not. I paid all prices starting from 11.50 to 49.99 to get the unlocking key from unlocking websites but they all returned my money after one or two days saying they dont have this phones unlocking key.
I called se they said they cant give me the code. I should contact my service provider.(rogers) which I did and they wouldnt give it to me since the contract I have with them isnt done yet.
One of the websites told me the only option remaining is the usb. So thats y I tried loooking it up and couldnt find anything. But there are some youtube clips showing how to unlock itbwith usb, however there is no link or info.
Im tired

I know that I have seen threads on unlocking Rogers here on xda X10 forum. Keep searching.
there is a guy called lancez who unlock X10 here in the forum, comments from other users sounds nice, but he unlocks ATT, I don't know about Rogers
send a PM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852119
After a certain amount of time (18 mo. for me with att contract) they will provide the unlock code for free. Only think is you need a non carrier sim card. In USA that means T-mobile, cost of sim card $10. Just did it today. Insert non ATT sim, then unlock screen, then phone prompts for unlock code > network unlock. Att store showed me his screen on how to unlock, it was Rogers, same procedure.
I paid 6$ to unlock my rogers x10, went on Ebay, dont remember the name but it took 6hres to get code, I'll try to fin it for you.
EDIT:h t tp://stores.ebay.ca/UnlockFusion?_rdc=1
Got rogers 2.3.2 and have a bootloader unlock code. Tried to get into fastboot and after much reading I think my phone might not even have a fastboot mode. My question is if anyone here thinks unlocking bootloader while being locked out of fastboot will ever be possible?
Am I stuck with what se and rogers gave me or will I ever taste custom rom goodness?
The FreeXperia team said they'll do nothing on phones with locked bootloaders, since they say that you can buy a carrier-free phone and unlock them yourself. So to say, they want to play by SE's rules.
R800x phones are a different league altogether, as you can't buy them SIM-free and SE has offered no BL unlock path at all for those phones.
I dont understand se rules. Why give me the unlock code but no path to unlock? Sure they gave me the keys to a nice car but putting fuel in it isnt possible? How does that make any sense?
They will give you the unlock path after your contract has expired. That's the logic. If you want to get the fully featured phone, buy it free from Sony directly.
and thats where my problem is, I bought the phone the day it came out straight from a rogers store at full price and not on any contract. unlocked carrier and put in my bell sim card and away I went.
sometimes it doesn't pay to be an early adopter
I bought it full-price as well... but carrier-free. People should do that more often, because carrier subsidies mean that you don't own your phone.
Live and learn eh. Thanks for the info

The issue is that, once the BL is unlocked, it removes all security from the phone including sim lock's ect. thats why only sim free phones are allowed to unlock

Yes but where can I get one? The sony stores here only provide sim locked ones. Even at full price. I checked online but their all rogers version unlocked.
I'm pretty sure that Rogers is the ONLY carrier in Canada to have the Xperia play which sucks cause I'm starting to get the feeling that unlocked bootloader will never happen for us sim-locked phones
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
I'm so sad now, i have a rogers play as well. but it does look like they are working on unlocking the bootloader for the verizon version of the play.
Always seems i'm on the wrong side of stuff. se should give us canadians a way to buy there phones and not have to go through a carrier. we apparently live in the free world yet have no options for this. when i lived ion the philippines i go go to sm (mall) and buy any se phone at the time untouched. in fact back in 2002 i bought a se t68i there and they would update the firmware for free.
Now i'm in the free world and se wont provide me a place to buy there handset unless it's through a carrier.
boy does this make me mad.....
ok im over it.
Hey guys,
I think I've finally settled on the S4 after trying and comparing it to the HTC One yesterday. It just felt far better in my hand and the screen was beautiful.
Now in the UK, as I'm sure many of you guys know (correct me if I'm wrong), but the best contract deal to have for tethering is the One plan by Three.
Unlimited data + tethering, a rare jewel indeed. As to whether they throttle during peak times, well you can't have everything and I haven't found any conclusive evidence to suggest they do so, please link me if I'm wrong here.
Either way, I am limited on my options here, due to my tethering requirements.
However the only thing preventing me from getting a Three phone is the fact that places like Phones4U or Carphone Warehouse either don't stock them or only stock SIM locked versions with branded firmwares for Three phones. Apparently they use a different method of sim locking the device, I can't be too sure what though.
Anyway, so it seems that whichever way I go about it, if I want data, I'll have a sim locked phone (they unlock after 3 months). This doesn't worry me though, what worries me is any restrictions on flashing the device.
I'm coming from an SGS - i9000. A device that seemed unbrickable and flashable every which way, from radio, to kernel, recovery and general software.
I want to know, are there any restrictions on flashing custom kernels, recoveries, modems (radios) or general firmwares that anyone has encountered, or am I safe getting a phone from Three UK (HG3)?
Rant over, sorry .
I have searched the forums and I haven't been able to find definite information.

'Tar very much! That's great news. I had heard rumours there were ways to bypass simlock via software hacks, however I had never really needed to use them. I doubt the sim lock will cause a problem for me. More a case of who I pass it on to!
