Hey I have a Shift that is 2.3.3 and can't be perm rooted. Sorry to be lazy but temp rooting my phone every time I reboot sounds really annoying. Are there any ways to tether for free without root? I just want to tether my phone to my laptop.
Tethering is 90% of the reason I root.

the easiest way without root is pdanet on the market
You can also try EasyTether. It works great

But sadly, without root, there is no way for free WIFI tethering. You need to use either USB or Bluetooth. So...I'm still hopeful that a real root solution can bge found.
klink on market works good for wired tether without root, i use it
PdaNet works well for me.

If you want to WiFi Tether you have to be Rooted.
2.3 can't be rooted, but you can downgrade to 2.2 then perm root
Shifted to the extreme, cause I rawk Supreme
Still no way to root 2.3 huh? I haven't checked in a while. Has anyone come out with a simple way to do the downgrade? Like a one-click?

Its not very hard to do... majority if not all of it is simple copying the commands and pasting the commands into terminal... adb is harder to setup than the actual root/downgrade process...

Update (about 3 days late)
After flashing my GPAD to Vegan, I did get ad-hoc to work through the tether app installed on the continuum (for the newbies like myself: Android has adhoc connecting disabled by default, so you have to use -- from what I can tell -- a custom ROM to connect to an adhoc wireless connection).
The Continuum only needed to be rooted so tethering could be installed.
Trying to root my Continuum. Tried the one click but it just locked up my phone. Pulled battery, do I do it again?
I'm totally new on the androids.

As of right now, you cannot root... I was previously rooted, but the update made it go away T_T. Bubby323 is getting a continuum for a little bit and should have it updated soon
I bought my Continuum yesterday, the 22nd. An update was immediately applied. Spent hours trying to root. Z4root (my go-to) wouldn't work after countless attempts. Gave up on an update.zip recovery. SUPERONECLICK is exactly how I was finally able to root...

anyone get wifi tether to work with froyo update?
ive been using wireless tether 3.0 beta without a problem just select sasmsung fascinate then enable softap mode.

I'm currently using Open Garden. It seems to be working great so far. I actually paid for the full version of EasyTether, and there's problems with the Continuum and EasyTether. Evidentially, USB debugging times out after a while. It's no biggie though, for me, because using a wifi tether app is so much simpler.
The new beta from Google works the best because you can enable softap mode so linux and playstations will pick it up. Open garden, barnacle, the wireless tether from the market just use adhoc frequincies so not everything will pick it up.

The Google beta app works, but my primary problem with it is the fact that it turns off BT every time I tether. I'll be using Open Garden until a newer version is released that doesn't affect my BT connection.
okay i got a deoid x and have nto done anything to it as far as root etc goes . i dont cause i am not very familiar and do not wanna mess it up. BUT now i am gonna be without home internet and the data verizon gived sux so Is there a way to use my phone to tether to my laptop and use my unlimited data ? Can someone please help me

You cannot tether without root access if you havent purchased the hotspot package through verizon

You can tether without root using pdanet(available in the market). It doesn't, however, work as good as wireless tether.
Rooting is extremely easy though and it's hard to mess your phone up doing it.

You can tether wirelessly without root by turning on 3g hotspot and toggling airplane mode on and off.

I am running MikShift with 1.8 kernal with Cyan Dragon Theme.
The wireless tether works just fine with the 4g, but it doesn't work with the 3g, are there any threads or a fix or anything info on this?
I'm also having problems with this. I have thread a few post down but unfortunately we haven't found a solution.

The only problem I'm having is that devices connected to my phone via Wireless Tether get a LOT LESS speed than my phone will. Full 4G signal on my phone ~5Megs while a connected device will be pulling about 500K.

The 4G works just fine for me, I just can't get the 3G to work.
I'm having this exact same problem. I haven't been able to figurre anything out either. One this I've noticed is that if I switch to a different app, the tether will stop working until I go back to the wireless tether app itself and then the data will start to flow again.

Ok so I am not the only one...4g works..3g dosen't give me internet access....on my GF EVO too...but I can tether through her hacked sprint hotspot....this thread and the other one needs to be combined i think...

Well it looks like newkidd might of found out the tether issue..../system/bi/sh is symlinked to bash....
he is working on a fix...but i was helping test and can say fixing the symlink and tether worked perfectly....on 3g...although i know i didn't do this fix Friday when we toyed with it so who knows what the deal was....
The hack apparently takes a lot of work to change from EVO to ours....not sure what dev is going to be able to port it....

Nfinitefx just added a mod to him rom which is a sprint hotspot hack..whether it works or not no clue but it was in his change log just recently..maybe you could pull something out of there?

Well deleting the spint hotspot made no difference. Now a few days later I can't even tether on 4G. Quite frustrating, this. Any suggestions?

OK I'm glad to see others are having this issue.
Prior to yesterday, I was only able to tether on 4G using Wired Tether OR Wireless Tether. As of yesterday, I can no longer tether AT ALL.
I've tried flashing back to the completely stock ROM (only had root mod) that preludedrew posted and I'm still experiencing this issue. The only other thing I could possibly do is RUU and then re-root.
Has anyone found a solution to this? Is this a sprint issue or individual phone? Are some people not affected at all? I have been using the stock ROM, rooted and with bcnice's 1.8 GHz kernel since root.
I use my phone as my primary internet so this is a HUGE detriment for me and also a GARGANTUAN downside for the phone. I'm wondering if Sprint is finding a way to outsmart us...
EDIT: Azilink appears to still be working fine for tethering. Although it does take a bit more of a setup and some familiarity (marginal) with adb, it also typically performs much better as well. Brandock made a post about it in the apps forum, a search should pull it up fairly quickly.
Well with stock root wireless tether wasw working fine once I switched roms it stopped working so you do the math

This is an issue with the ROMs not the app or anything. The symlin for /system/bin/sh is wrong....thats why when you go into terminal you see sh3.2 if you remove it and make a new symlink wireless tether will work....i can post the commands I was given that worked fine but I make no guarantees it will work or that it wont do something bad to your phone but I will give you the commands I used.
using terminal and your /system will have to be r/w
rm /system/bin/sh
ln -s /system/bin/sh0 /system/bin/sh
Ok so I just ordered a X from ebay and its on its way. So I started doing a little research on rooting since I want to root it right away. I have done some research in this form but wanted to be sure before I attempted anything. So, is their one solid way to root the phone no matter what version it is? If not what do I need to know for certain OTA versions so I dont brick my phone? Thanks!

Ok so I have revived my phone and rooted it. Its awesome by the way. But I am in the process of setting up WiFi tether. But each time I start it the 3g hotspot comes up in the background. So when I connect my computer and go to any website it shoots me strait to the Verizons page. Even though I have root and am running a different WiFi tether program other then the 3g hotspot that the x comes with. How do I get around this without being charged.
Try using easytether to usb tether instead
I would really like to use some sort of wifi tether. Their should be some sort of work around or fix.

My apologies if this isn't the place to post this, I couldn't find a Design 4G forum and the EVO 4G seemed like the closest phone.
My phone is running Android version 2.3.4 and HTC Sense 3.0. I rooted it back in December (Superuser) and my wifi hot spot worked great. A few weeks ago though, it stopped working. I don't get any errors but my Toshiba Thrive can't connect to the internet through my Design 4G.
I haven't accepted any system updates so I don't understand why all of sudden it won't work. Any help would be much appreciated

I'm using WiFi Tether by Harald Muller and yes, I'm still rooted.

It wasn't an app from the Marketplace it was one that showed up as a result of the root but I can certainly try it to see what happens. Thanks
