Wouldn't it be three words?
fastboot oem unlock

Yes the steps are simple:
First have fastboot working on your computer.
Next have your phone drivers installed if you are on Windows.
Then put your phone into bootloader (hold Vol Up while powering on).
Finally run: FASTBOOT OEM UNLOCK
Bootloader will unlock and you can flash whatever you want. Sounds like you will want to flash ClockworkMod Recovery and then SuperUser.zip.
Matt

Well, here goes nuthin! thanks for the input all.

Ummm...i guess i need more hand holding more than I thought...fml. sorry gang. I promise I am good at following instructions... smile.

You could try one of the stickied guides like

Lots of useful information in that thread

Thats the thread I have been referring to though it isn't clear on how to keep my stock gingerbread....i am good to go so long as I know how to keep my stock factory os...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

Through step 2 your stock OS is unchanged
Part 3 installs a custom recovery which is needed if you want superuser permissions
Part 4 installs the files needed to have root in your OS
So if you want to keep everything stock and just have an unlocked bootloader feel free to stop after step 2, if you want a rooted stock follow through each of the 4 steps

Great news, the bootloader is now unlocked...halfway there! I am on the Rooting step...
In clockwork recovery, the root aborts with error "E: can't open/sdcard/su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip (bad)" then says "installation aborted".

Done and rooted. Yay!

Bypass bootloader to recovery:)

Hi, I found this accidentally. I'm on 2.3.4 stock rooted with locked bootloader.
1. You must have root.
2. Install Rom Manager from Market
3. Open Rom Manager and flash ClockworkMod Recovery
4. Turn off you phone and connect to the wall outlet charger and its going to bypass bootloader and open recovery
That's all I found it by accident
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
This isn't news, clockworkmod is on most people's phones here, from a few different sources. Did you know you can install themes, radios, fonts, bootanimations, all kinds of things from recovery? Check out the development forum.
Yes but you don't need to unlock the bootloader to install rom's.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Incorrect.
If you try flashing a ROM right now you will brick your phone. We could get into a bootstrap recovery before the bootloader was unlocked, but if you installed a different system the phone would catch that upon next boot and won't start up. I believe it's at least something like that... You need an unlocked bootloader, basically!
If I install a different rom its not going to boot in to the rom? Why not?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Because your bootloader isn't unlocked lol, that's the whole point of the locked bootloader.
Why don't you just unlock it so that you CAN install custom ROMs?

ROM Manager installs recovery over the stock recovery, which is in the fastboot menu prior to loading the boot image. You can get into stock recovery prior to booting, but it basically does nothing. The ROM Manager recovery is semi-functional but doesn't wipe anything, which fails with installing. Romracer's recovery appears to be fully functional. After anything is installed in recovery, you will need to reboot system to initiate the bootloader. The bootloader has to load the kernel as well as the system/ROM for you to get into the environment. The bootloader checks that the signatures of the kernel and ROM match what it is expecting to see or you will get a brick. Unlocking the bootloader still loads the bootloader, but avoids the checking of signatures of kernel or ROM, if I understand correctly.
Ok but its going to let me install a rom, isn't the bootloader spouse to stop it from installing?
I just made a backup and it let me.

RSD Lite is Moto software, not for public use but leaked, that is needed for loading stock boot files (SBF). Check the development forum for all details about what you are doing/about to do/have done.

STOP doing ANYTHING to your phone RIGHT NOW. take some time to read several of the threads on the development forum and verse yourself in what RSD, SBF, fast boot, recovery, boot loaders and pudding are. there are LOTS of guides for beginners on how to change ROMs on the phone. what you're doing is NOT one of them.
if you do anything else with your phone right now without reading up and knowing what you're doing, you WILL **** up your phone.
This seems to be a troll attempt or an attempt to look really stupid, either way, the user doesn't seem to want to hear out anyone telling him to stop what he's doing, so I say just let him figure it out the hard way.

Easiest way is to go into the market and download "ROM Manager" by ClockworkMod. In that program pick the first option to flash clockwork mod. Put the ROM on your internal SD card then boot into recovery. Perform your wipes and then install the .zip from sd card.

tried tha too. same problem blacka screen comes up with a caution triangle

You may not be rooted. Do you have superuser in your app list? Does ROM manager ask for root privileges? Did you grant them?

is there any way that i can get my motoblur account back on alien 4? cuz evey time i tried to set it up this error comes up "there were erros getting data from the blur service." how can i solve this ?
Advice BEFORE i unlock appreciated !
I followed this guide to root my T-Mobile Atrix http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root
I then installed both TitaniumB & CWM to test it phone was rooted ok & all currently seems good..
I NOW want to follow this guide (((http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...97&postcount=1))) with
the end goal being to install my custom roms (eg Alien or CM7)
As a NOOB i do have a couple of querys BEFORE I enter the path to enlightenment. I really appreciate some
advice..
1. Is there a guide (OR ADVICE FROM ANY PRO OUT THERE) that can tell me how to backup my current stock T-
Mobile installation ?
2. I am assuming I can jump straight to "Unlock your Bootloader" correct or not ?
3. If I CAN jump straight to "Unlock your Bootloader" should I miss anything out based on the fact I did not use Gingerbreak to root my atrix ?
4.Do I need to do a network unlock BEFORE starting any of the above ?
5.Why on step 10 does it say "10. Load up the SBF file – IHOP_Bell.sbf"
but the actual file inside the RAR is called "intl-fix-try1.sbf" ??? Worry or not ??
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO DO prior to following this guide ?
Thanks friends...........
John

You can also download the nexus 7 toolkit here at xda. Its free and its awesome IMO. I soft bricked my nex7 once and fixed it good as new with the tool kit. Just follow the instructions for flashing back to stock. You can even do so without loosing root. Or you can unroot and re lock the boot loader if you like. Heres the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195

The problem with using a toolkit is you learn nothing. If something were to happen again and the toolkit can't fix it, your're screwed.
Taking the time to learn fastboot commands will help get you out of pretty much any issue. If you want a longer explanation as to why I prefer people to use fastboot read here.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469909
I tryed both methods and wasnt successful i still can enter fastboot but am not that great with these sort of stuff is their a way for me to directly flash a rom from my pc to the tablet without me actually doing it with the tablet ... or a way for me to put the rom in the tablet because i am stuck and i cant put anything in the tablet

[Q] Rooting and Installing CM10 On Nexus 7 version 4.2.1

I'm a noob, I'm not good with tech. And I am willing to guess come christmas time when kids unwrap their presents they will need an answer to the exact question "Rooting and Installing CM10 On Nexus 7 version 4.2.1".
I have a 16GB Nexus 7 wifi model. Please tell me as simple as you can for me and others on this site how to proceed in a safe and stable manner.

It's pretty much the same as every other Nexus device and doing it this way teaches you how to use fast boot and adb commands which is very useful in the future.

a root tool kit is the most dangerous way to do it, for someone that is inexperienced especially.
read up on it, there is a lot of information here how to root your device properly. a root toolkit would do it, but you wont learn anything. and when itll come to needing to fix something, you wont know how, even though it might be a simple fix. at that point you might make it worse for yourself. do yourself a favor, educate yourself first, then root your device the way youre supposed to root any nexus. the right procedure is simple.. fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash the su binaries or a custom rom in your recovery, reboot. thats it.

Help rooting

There's a modified boot.img? I don't think so... To root, all you need is a custom recovery. I also wouldn't use the toolkit. At this step, it's just as easy to do it manually. Just type in with your device in fastboot and connected to a PC: "fastboot flash recovery name of recovery.img"
