Ringtone & notification Problem HELP PLZ - Nexus S General

Hello all i have had this problem twice now and each time it has happened i have had to reflash the ROM (NSCollab 1.0.39) to get them to work again
The problem is i have a custom ringtone and notification and at first they work with NP but after about 2 to 3 weeks they just stop working and disappear from the ringtone and notification list at first i thought maybe it was something i installed that made them stop working so i reflashed NSCollab 1.0.39 and just left it and diden't install anything and it still did the same thing
now i know the rongtones and notifications should be in the media/audio/ringtones and media/audio/notifications folders and i haven't changed thoes folders and the files in then in anyway they just stop working after a bit is there any way to fix this problem
Oh ya forgot to add this has happened on Buglesspete's ROM too

Are the files still there?

I've been experiencing similar problems; stock notification tones keep sounding off, but the custom notification tones are still checked on the list. Custom ringtones are working as they should. I'm running oxygen 2.2.2

Hmm, that's really weird. Have you tried using a 3rd party program to set the ringtone? It's a stretch but worth a shot.

Alarm Doesn't Work!

Using Enom's or Cy's ROM...(with the Nextheme and Goodies)...the alarm doesn't go off at 530am!
Anybody know if it's the ROM itself or the Theme+Goodies? Or do I need to experiment myself? (I've experimented with setting the alarm to go off an hour after I set it....it worked...but not sure if it worked because I was playing with the phone at the time)
All I get when I wake up is the trackball blinking. I've read somewhere that the alarm turns itself off after an hour...but I wake up around 5 minutes after the alarm was supposed to have gone on.
Good thing I used a backup alarm...otherwise I'd be in deep Sh------------it!
My alarm didn't go off today, but did yesterday. I have the clock as ignore in my task killer.
What I have found is that my ringtones somehow get lost on the SD card and not played. I am not sure what is happening!!!
Not cool though.

If you use any sort of task killing application and do not ignore or exclude the clock, it will kill it, and your alarm along with it.
Problem is that I ignore the Clock.
But when I go to check the Alarm Ringtone, and press play, it doesn't play anything, just a VERY LOW beep. Worked yesterday, nothing today.
Very odd!!

I like to push the audio files to the system and into it's corresponding folder. Maybe you can try that.
For me...I totally forgot about task manager! I never thought of it because the Alarm Icon is always displayed on the notification bar next to the time...whether the clock is killed or not. I guess I'll find out tomorrow morning after I exclude the clock app from being killed.
Kind of makes me wish the Android 'stole' some stuff from the Blackberry.
Can you explain that a bit more? How would I do that?
Will Astro work?
I honestly think it is an SD issue and yes, I never had that problem with my blackberry. They keep the ringtones on the system memory and you never have to worry about it.

I'm guessing that it will only work with a rooted phone. (Mine is) This is what I use. Root Explorer. I take the files from the SD card and move it into the system/media/audio/alarms directory.
Not sure if Astro is able to access the root of the phone. Otherwise I guess you can use
adb push alarmfilename.mp3 /system/media/audio/alarms
Either way you do it...reboot the phone.
Got it, and done, thanks.
Will see if this works.

New Messaging Client

Does anyone know if the new messaging client from the thread below works on the T-Mo US version? More specifically on the original ROM (not the updates one tmobile released with the screen sensitivity issues?)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700495
That I am not sure b/c in order to install a new messaging you would need to uninstall the old one which is not possible on a stock rom (as far as I know) That sucks too b/c the 1.8 version fixes a lot of the issues you are most likely having
I just installed it last night on the original Tmo HD2 stock ROM (2.10), and it seems to be working just fine for the most part.
I used the 2015 version on that thread, not the 2016. Installed just the cab for the new client, didn't bother updating the .mui file he provides, since I don't care about the securebox. It installed without a hitch and replaced the stock 2012 version of the client.
The only issue I seem to be having is an odd SMS notification icon (new, not sent...) show up in the taskbar, and my batt meter isn't showing there now for some reason. I'm sure I just goofed a step somewhere, I just haven't had the time to figure it out yet.
But, the bottom line is that the client does install and work on the first stock tmo ROM, I just can't say yet if it's faster (though I'm sure it is) because I haven't filled it up with enough messages yet to stress-test it
Same here, installed v15 on stock tmo ROM, so far so good. One minor but annoying bug, it says that i have a new unread text message but i really don't.

There is no need to uninstall the old one, the way WM works with ROM files is an newer file that "overwrites" a ROM file is sorta mapped into place. The original file is still there in ROM but the newer version is used, if the newer version of the file is deleted or app uninstalled then the ROM file comes back.
as already reported this does work I just installed it on mine and it definitely seems faster. i had been archiving all my SMS every week and then deleting the database, I might attempt to reinsert all my weekly archives in and see what happens. Think ill give the messaging app a few days make sure nothing weird comes up.
As for the icon, yeah it did change over the stock sms notification icon. the envelope with word balloon looking icon is gone. now a new sms is a white envelope and new emails are a black envelope. I noticed this change in the 2014 messaging app that i installed a few weeks back

I had seen this prior with the old messaging client while restoring backups into the database. I think the DB entry gets corrupt. If its showing which if your contacts have the unread message, try sending them a message and have them send back. That seemed to have fixed it prior, you could also try a battery pull

Well I stand corrected, I always knew it to not work that way. Thanks for the info!
Yeah I noticed the different icons on 2014 too but I just install a custom taskbar anyway that takes care of that.
So far I noticed that it does improving loading quite a bit. And the issue where it highlights the last message is finally gone, that was my biggest gripe.

Hey Chris, what custom taskbar are you using? I've got dinik's anastasia taskbar icons right now, and the new odd-looking notification icons are still showing unskinned....but, I didn't reinstall the taskbar after putting the new msg client on, so maybe that's what it requires. I'd still like to know which one you're using that skins them though, in case I need to troubleshoot further, thanks!
Just installed it so far so good, seems pretty quick..

These are the 2 files that control the icons in the messaging client.
MessagingRes.dll & MMSRes_480x800.dll
Does this updated message client (2015 and 2016) and anything to the messaging system other than speeding it up? Any new features? I've always found the HTC messaging on the HD2 very lacking compared to say, my Omnia II.

Now, if I could just get rid of the extra sms notification. It always starts at "2", whenever I get a single new incoming message, and won't return to "0" till I soft-reset
i downloaded the 2015 all in one cab and so far so good. well i havent really texted but the only thing thats annoying is that everytime i send a message it tells me it was successfully sent how do i disable that
i know theres is a way i seen the option but i just fogot

Can't change sms notification tone

Even after a factory reset my phone is not allowing me to change the sms notification tone. It always plays the 'alpha' tone. I have the main notification setting set to 'gamma' and the notification setting under messages set to 'gamma' as well. Am I missing something?
OMG, I was starting to feel like I was alone on this one, as I've had this problem since day one and nobody has said anything abt it. I'm on my second phone and still having the same problem. The notification tone for sms just doesn't change from alpha. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.
This is my very first android phone BTW (coming from a BB8900) and I absolutely love it. I feel like I've invested too much time on this phone to exchange it and start all over again, so I'm just putting up with it. Plus its a $10 restocking fee every time.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
I actually have kind of the same issue, but with a twist. I can change the sound except for one contact. With this contact it plays a song from my sd card. I've looked everywhere and can't figure out where the heck its defined.
Its not enough for me to return it and I'm hoping loading a new rom and it will fix it.
How goofy.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Yes, I have the same problem. What's odd is that I do remember that gamma would play for a few messages earlier on. But, now it's all alpha.
Another very odd oddity which I think is kind of odd is that for some odd reason, calls get the vibrate treatment, but not always. I have vibrate for incoming calls unchecked, but yet the thing vibrates on calls at times. Odd.
Mines doing the same thing! It really bothers me, but its big the alpha tone. I was thinking a new ROM would fix it as well. Hope it does!

i recently got my mytouch 4g and i also cant' change my sms tone, idk maybe we're missing something but has anyone found out how we can change it.
Well, I took my phone to a T-Mobile store and had a rep check it out. He couldn't get the sms notification tone to change either and offered to exchange it for another phone. Guess what...the new phone does the same thing. I'm just going to deal with it for now and hope someone finds a fix for it.
I solved my issue.
On my sd card I had folders from my Nexus One that included music. Somehow it was picking this song. I moved the folder to the root level of the sd card and now it plays the correct notification sound.
For those keeping score at home. I had a folder named "music" in the sdcard/media/audio folder along with two folders named "ringtones" and "notifications".
Sent from my HTC Glacier
No problems here, but I just wish we could pick the default Froyo notification tone. None of the tones included with the MT4G sound very good (at least to me).
SOLVED. There seems to be a bug when selecting the notification ringtone in Messages. When 'default ringtone' is selected as the ringtone in Messages, alpha is always used, despite having set the default notification in Settings -> Sound -> Notification sound to something other than 'alpha'.
So, Messages seems to ignore the default notification ringtone setting. To counter that, simply select the ringtone you want in Messages manually, that is, don't rely on the 'default ringtone' setting.
I'm glad you solved it, but I have had 2 different notification sounds set from the get go, on in the default, and one in the messaging app. neither of them are set on Alpha, but it always plays Alpha anyways.
I just deleted everything media off of my SDcard, rebooted, now just waiting for a text lol

Are you sure? If you have Google Voice, you can just send a text to your T-Mobile number to test.
heyy! That was a good idea! I sent a text to my phone using my computer. and BING. it worked with a different sound. I don't know what exactly is causing this problem, but after I took off the folder that Ringdroid created with all my custom alarm/text/ringtones, the phone changed the tone. weird.
EDIT: well the tone changed, yes, but its not using the tone that I set through the messaging app its self. Its using the default notification instead selected in the settings instead. -.-
I just realized the phone uses default tones when the sd card its mounted to my pc. D'oh.
After I unplugged the usb cable, presto, back to the sounds I selected. I wonder if I can copy my custom sounds to the phones filesystem and not have to worry about this?

I use Ringo Lite to choose my ringtones and text notification tones for each of my contacts. Works great and it's free

Most likely. Can't you copy them to the system ringtones directory?
I have this same problem. It only plays alpha. My default notification is epsilon in settings, and in the message-settings it is epsilon also :/
I haven't fixed the problem yet. But another simple way around it is by using chomp sms or handcent. I dont like using replacement apps =l
EDIT: or sms pop up, which is what I'm using right meow
Sent from my rooted HTC Glacier using XDA app
This is the WRONG answer. Tested it and your solutions fails. Manually doesn't change anything the true solution is to delete the folder that your third party app made on the SD card. To test just take out the SD card from phone and you'll see how all the ringtones work perfectly as stated by Mr_Skot above.
TRUE SOLUTION: REMOVE SD CARD TO TEST, DELETE SOUND FOLDERS FROM SD CARD AS PER MR_SKOT that's the true solution THANK YOU! this was driving me INSANE!

Clock app crash? It's actually a ring tone bug!

Every time I open the clock app and try to set an alarm the app crashes. It freezes and the just says "Clock has stopped". I´ve tried to clear cache and restarted the phone twice, still doesn't work.
Anyone else having the same problem and have a solution for it?
Thanks!

Not a solution but it is worth cleaning all the alarms setup (if there are any).
Going to settings/More/Date and Time and changing the auto time on/off, time zone on/off and the other settings. I.e. just changing everything to manual or to auto dependant on your current settings to see if that helps reset something.
Worth a try before a reset at least.
Battery out for a min and restart too maybe?
I did a factory reset a couple of hours ago. When I first started the clock app worked like a charm, and I thought everything was back to normal. BUT!
When I changed the ringt one to one of my mp3s on the phone (selecting via settings and then ES File Explorer) the clock problem started again! When I try to change ring tone again back to one of Androids, the green android-guy under ring tone, the phone stops and a pop up that says "The process android.process.media has been stopped" shows up.
I have no idea how to "undo" it again. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do? Just re-installed like 80 apps and set my phone back to normal again, and changing my ring tone was like the last thing, and that just F'ed everything up.
It doesn't bother me That much since I can use another ring tone and set my alarms with the "AlarmClock Plus"-app. But it's still anyoing as hell and I would really like to solve it!

Got it to work by having my Mp3-song selected as ring tone, and then move it to another folder. Both the clock and the ring tone-changer works fine now.

EDIT: I solved it by making my Mp3-file into a Wav-file. Don't know if it's just that file or all Mp3-files. Cased closed for my problem at least, woho!

This trick of moving the bad ringtones to another folder worked and saved me tons of work if I had to factory reset the thing. One small addendum, after moving the files I had to clear data and cache for the clock app before it allowed me to create or edit an alarm again.

This part didn't work for me. My own ringtones were .ogg files and even when I converted them to .wav files, both the clock app and the android ringtone selector kept crashing. I set my own ringtones using the ES File Explorer too, maybe, just maybe something went wrong there or maybe the files were simply too big in size. I don't know.
However, I did solve my problem in the following way:
1) having root access is necessary for this method to work
2) using a root-enabled file explorer or using a root-enabled terminal to copy your own ringtones to /system/media/audio/ringtones, /system/media/audio/notifications or /system/media/audio/alarms respectively.
3) chmod 644 for these new files (not sure if this is really needed, but I guess it can't hurt)
4) reboot the phone (absolutely necessary as apparently it loads all available sound files at boot time only)
5) set your ringtones for any apps using the android ringtone selector. Your own ringtones should now appear in this list.

Wow thanks that worked. ... nice...!!!! Thanks +1
I had the same issues. In my opinion "ES Browser" was the reason for this bug. To fix it, i removed "media storage"-app. After a few reboots all libraries (Pictures, Music...) got filled again.
Clock and ringtone now working again.
I Know its an old thread, but i was having trouble with my Galaxy s6 clock.
I solved the Problem by changing the theme. Propably it will work for you aswell

Text messaging is losing the custom ringtone I set

Hey y'all,
As the title says, I have set a custom MP3 as a notification tone to receive when I get text messages, but, for some reason, this gets lost every-so-often. The MP3 file is just one second long (MGS alert tone, if anyone is interested) and on previous phones has been the text alert of choice.
However, I can't see a pattern here, but every few days or so I will get a text that does not have a tone, then in settings it tells me I have an 'Unknown Ringtone' and I have to reset it again. I have used file commander to set the tone.
Any ideas?
Cheers
