Maybe broken?

Was just playing minecraft. A nice marathon and all of the sudden the nexus 7 goes off, but before doing so the screen starts to do a bunch of different crazy flashes and static. And now it wont come back on, and when I I plug it to the charger it sounds weird. Like if I put it close to my ear it sounds like electricity.
Anyone else experience anything like this?

I had the exact same issue a few days ago.it appears that the problem was to dip with the battery and charge.once the phone went below 11% it would shut down.I restarted it and after several attempts the thing would start but then I would get a fuzzy screen and static from the speakers.
Unfortunately you have a defective unit, if your issues are the same as mine. Best to do an RMA.

I had the exact same issue, but it occurred when I drained the battery to 0% while it was plugged in to my computer. Apparently, the USB ports on most computers don't provide enough juice to keep the N7 alive while using it. I just long-pressed the power button (for around 30 seconds) after it had charged for a bit and the N7 booted right up.

I have no idea why it would happen to an N7 randomly at 11% but have you had this happen multiple times?

Yes.I ran my nexus 7 down about 3 times and at 10 to 11% the screen would turn off, the system shots down and it takes a few attempts to try to restart it.
First you get a static noise from the speaker and then when you boot it up, the screen goes fuzzy and shuts down again.
You let it sit for 10minutes and let the battery charge over 11% and it works again as long as it's still charging.
I returned mine.the defective one was the c7
I now have a c8.very small screen lift but it works well otherwise.probably won't exchange because the lift is barely visible

Humming sound when charging with headphones connected

I'm getting a humming sound in the headphones when I'm charging at the same time. If I disconnect the charger, the humming sound goes away.
Anyone else getting this?

I have the same behaviour on mine. You can hear even more interference noise if you drop down the notification bar!

Also got this, it seems to stop if you turn the screen brightness up full. But starts again when you turn the screen off.
A bit annoying this one, the first thing I have found that makes me consider returning it.

This is common,I use my asus tab and phone in the car,headphone jack going into radio,get him

been getting hum like this for years on different devices

Very common in any audio device without an isolated ground ..
It is just the degree that you can hear it, varies from device to device ...

It might be common elsewhere but it doesn't happen in my iPad or Nexus 7. Too many apologists in this forum.

Nexus 10 makes more noise: speakers and headphones
Hi guys,
I just got a warranty replacement for my Nexus 10 dues to the noise of the speakers.
Here's that problem:
1. While charging is indicated and with the display on full brightness, press the home button to activate Google Now.
2. This activate the speakers. Noise can be heard especially from the top of the left speakers up to 6 inches away.
3. On a good tablet (ie. warranty return from Samsung), the noise stops after 8 seconds. On a bad (first-day) tablet, the noise continues. Turn screen brightness down, the noise goes away.
I can also confirm that the warranty-return tablet I have, has the charging noise in headphones.
If you plug in the headphones while charging is indicated, there is noise. Unplug the charger, the headphones or get to fully charged, the noise goes away.

I also have this problem. It's loud enough for me to consider returning the tablet. Has anyone received a replacement without this problem? I'm wondering if this is just a design flaw due to the proximity of the headphone and charging ports. If so, this tablet may be a no go for me which would be a shame as I very much like it otherwise.

I found that the charging usb cable does make a difference. I was using a cheap one before and I could hear the noise. But when I used the official cable supplied with the nexus10 other was no noise anymore!
Same with charging time. It used to take 10 hours with the cheap cable but only 6 hours with the official one. Might have to do with goog shielding.

This problem occurs with the supplied charger and cable. I haven't yet used any other cable or charger with the nexus 10.

I've tried 3 chargers and 3 cables (much longer and much shorter). Same problem. Imagine the frustration when you're using ridiculously overpriced Bose noise canceling headphones!

My problem is I get noise with headphones and charging the device.. but when it's fully charged on charger it gets much worse and is unacceptably loud.
I unplug it and there it goes away.
This was with brightness down,I didn't think to change brightness.
I'm calling Samsung to ask them about it (on hold now) and ask about warranty/rma. Not sure if I'm supposed to call them or Google.
Edit: Samsung bounced me around to 3 different departments and the last finally said to call 1.888.987.4357 which I realized after I hung up, that's the number I called to begin with! :banghead:
I also tried brightness and turning it all the way up and there's no noise..
Turn it down part way, it comes back, the lower the volume the worse. Screen off, it makes noise, not as bad as brightness all the way down but still to much that I will tolerate.
Edit 2: I called up Google Play [1.855.836.3987] and gave them the order number and they said since I bought it on craigslist they have to contact the original owner to authorize a replacement. But the rep didn't say "Oh that static/crackling is normal" so I assume this is RMA-worthy
Hopefully it will work out and I will get a new device that doesn't have any issues [This one has a little light bleed--not sure how normal is normal for light bleed, but hopefully it doesn't get worse with the replacement, assuming everything works out].

So I got my replacement and it suffers from the same problem.
The problem (varying from slightly to very annoying static/hardware noise) only happens when
1, fully or mostly charged battery
2, plugged in to ac charger (I'm using stock oem usb cable & charger)
3, low screen brightness (full brightness= no noise, half = some noise, dim = worst), or screen off/sleep
4, using headphones
Is this just how every nexus 10 is?
Can anyone willing try all the requirements above to see if there's anybody who does NOT suffer from this apparently global problem? Thanks!
If you don't get any noise from your nexus 10, and you met all the above conditions, PLEASE reply to this thread and let me know.

Well not necessarily loud,but you can always tell when the power cord is hooked up.I used to use my expensive hi end laptop to watch movies in the car.then got a infinity prime tablet,then nexus 10.all made noise when plugged in to power

Well to me it is loud. and annoying. and I can't believe my replacement is the same way. Arghh!! Even with a phone [0.7A I think] charger, it makes the same noise. And whenever you touch the screen, there is more noise.

bumping this up, is there any n10 that does not suffer of this static noise problem when charging?

Update: I tried a different set of earplugs while charging and there is definitely static and a hum. The set without this issue are the type that hang on the ears with no band (much looser fitting). While earplugs revealed the issue which disappears as soon as I unplugged the microUSB charger. I am going to assume that the static is always there while charging but I did not detect it due to the looser fitting earphones.
My N10 is only 4 days old and I have watched multiple videos over CIFS network drives using XBMC and streamed Youtube and I have never heard any hum or static while charging. Total silence when nothing is playing or with the video pause or when video is playing. I double checked just before replying to your post.
Before mine arrived I was very concerned when I read about this issue. For me it would've been a show stopper and resulting in a returned device.
My N10 is a "R32D10" which is also lambasted as being lightbleed prone. If mine has lightbleed it is so slight that is of no concern I watch videos in bed with the lights out before sleeping so I would have noticed by now.
My own conclusion is that like all electronics getting a "perfect" unit can be a crap shoot.

Loud buzzing from wall charger

Just wondering if anyone else noticed this. I unplugged the wall charger today and noticed it was buzzing. It continued to buzz for about 30 seconds after I unplugged it.
Maybe I have a bad unit? Or is it normal. It takes about 3 hours to charge to full and for it being a 1.2 amp output charger that seems kinda slow. I figured it has something to do with the lithium polymer battery but maybe it's the charger?
Going to bed now but I'll try to get a video recording of the buzzing noise in the morning.

Would it be more like a "whining" sound from an internal capacitor discharging? I recall hearing that sound as well, when I switched off the charger and unplugged my phone. I think my previous HTC charger had that sound as well.

My OEM gnex charger does this but it's going through a UK adapter also

I'm pretty sure this is actually a fairly common trait of mobile device chargers, and it has something to do with the rectifier(?) used to change the current from AC to DC to charge the phone. It shouldn't buzz at all when you have the phone plugged into the charger.
I simply remove my charger from the wall when the phone is not plugged in. I save a (minuscule) amount of energy this way, too.

FWIW my charger buzzes like crazy too (UK).

did anyone request a replacement charger from Google or is everyone just accepting it for what it is?

I just realized my charger was having this issue too. It's too quiet to hear in most instances but if I get real close it easy to hear. It's very high pitch.

It's normal. My Gnex charger does this as well. There was a thread in the Gnex forum that discussed this and I believe it was said that it was the capacitors making the sounds which is why when you unplug it the sound goes for another second or two before fading away.

I thought I was hearing things until I put my ear up to the charger. It's definitely audible from a distance...but mine isn't high pitched. The buzz I'm hearing is almost a tiny motor as odd as that sounds.

Same here. I can't sleep with it next to my bed it's so loud. I'm just using a charger from my old phone. I've used like 10 different mobile chargers and the n4 one in the only one that I've ever had that has this issue. US version.

[Q] Charger making audible noise

So I got my Nexus 4 on Monday. I noticed that after I unplugged my phone in the morning the charger was making a pretty noticeable lower pitched squeal noise. Its more noticeable if its been charging the phone and then the phone is unplugged.
Since I heard it making this noise, I unplugged it from the wall. It sounds like there is something rattling inside the charger itself. I'm wondering if maybe a solder was cold and a chunk broke off or something? Does anyone else have this happening with their charger? I'm thinking of calling up to get a replacement charger.

My other chargers don't make that much noise though. Plus... the rattle? That doesn't seem like that should happen.

Mine buzzes but no rattle. I turn all mine off at the wall when not in use (UK) and often use the Nexus 7 charger, so not really an issue for me.
I would seek a replacement if I were you, but i suspect they will only accept a (time consuming) RMA...

Hissing sound from wall charger?

Anybody else's wall charger makes a hissing sound when plugged in ? When I pull it out it goes away after 5-10 seconds or so.

I don't understand you guys, y'all hear everything. First, everyone can hear a rattle, then someone said that the screen made noise... And now the charger. Yes! The flow of electrons colliding, the harmonious tune reminds one of an ensemble. Though, I kid for I myself have heard many voices from the device. Spirits, may they be not, for I would sooner play the fool. / morning rant

I can hear that sound with any power brick I have. It's coming from the transformer. It's a very high frequency which could be the reason some people cannot hear it, while others can. I've always been able to hear electronics when they are on. Like CRT TV's, etc.

It's normal. A lot of them do it to varying degrees. Don't worry, it's normal. =) Folks with sensitive hearing will be able to hear it.

Mine does it too, even for 13 seconds after i unplug it. Freaks me out.
For science, I plugged my charger into my KillAWatt meter, and it draws .13A when connected to and actively charging the Nex4, and .10A when not even plugged into it. I should reference that i'm in US and show 125V. Not really much of a drop - guess I'll be sure and unplug this sucker when not in use.

Capacitor discharge? I've heard it.

Can hear some awful buzzing through my hearing aids when headphones are plugged in with the wall charger connected too, thankfully that's gone when it's not being charged.
