I actually hate the trackpad function on the phone.. is it possible to remap it as a power button that will just turn on and off the screen? I've searched the forum, but nothing gives me exactly what I want. Thanks!

Miui, has trackpad wake only, stock froyo or gingerbread mysense has wake/sleep...Google trackpad wake/sleep+xda and you'll find what you need...
I actually want to completely turn off the trackpad function and use it as a power button.
There are no ready-made mods that you're asking for, so you have a couple of options:
1) Try to rewrite some AOSP/CM7 code to disable trackpad functionality and compile yourself a ROM.
2) Try to hack the keyboard files from any ROM to achieve the same.
3) Disassemble the phone and disconnect the trackball lines physically.
4) Sell your phone and get something else.

Is there a way to create a today plugin to use the camera's flash as a flashlight?
PLEASE READ the F*cking WIKI,
Here you go,
Yes, that is indeed its formal name, the "F*cking WIKI".
My app VJCandela might help (I recommend VJCandela lite).
Also, if you're asking the question, you probably also want to install VJLumos III on your Hermes. It's nice.
V
Lately I was making myself familiar with VJCandelaLite (pardon me, merely "Flashlight.exe" that I found somewhere) and ran into strange behavior. Further experiments revealed the following.
I created a shortcut in the Start Menu with intention to always launch VJCandelaLite this way because all hardware keys are already occupied. Now, if the shortcut is activated via the touch screen (finger or stylus), everything is OK. However if I use joystick keys to open the menu, scroll to the shortcut and start it, the flash just flashes briefly -- it's even hard to notice it. That's sad; the touch screen is always worth saving (too delicate for me), hardware keys are way better.
Then I discovered that if the flash has successfully turned on, any keypress turns it off immediately Only afterwards I found vijay555's homepage and things got a bit clearer. The rest is simple logic.
I believe that VJCandelaLite should start checking keys not immediately but after some time -- say, 500 ms. Is there a need for very short flashes anyway?

I've found that a white image on the front screen illuminates better than using the flash. Just an FYI.

Try holding the middle button in. You'll find it stays on.

Hi, do you have some news about waking up the Legend with the trackball? It is a little bit annoying to wake it up with power button and afterwards unlock the phone sliding your finger down. I am still searching for this feature across the internet.
If you will have some news or find a solution, please post it.
Nobody?

That's what I'm looking for too. Or anything else. Tap the screen and then slide unlock, or get rid of the unlock slide at all and use just power button etc etc. This HTC lock/unlock solution is just the worst one.
Hello,
I'm interrested in that too !
It is annoying to use the power button...
Any news yet ?
Thanks
hi yeah use No lock app
It simply disables the lock screen. Press the unlock/menu button just once and the screen turns on immediately.
I wrote a config file to unlock with menu and home button..
Trackpad button is different from others buttons! Kernel doesn't assign a code to trackpad.. I'm taking a patch from desire's forum and i'm trying to apply it to legend kernel..
instead of power button plus swipe, you can do power button plus menu button
i'm interested in this
Yes it works!
Root is needed and a kernel compiled by myself needed too..
(i add those patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703539 )
No root necessary!
I just randomly came across this... Downloaded a free app called "No Lock" (BoD ) which obviously removes the lock from the screen, but it also enables any button including the track ball, volume keys, menu, search... (you get the point) to turn on the phone screen. Its up to you guys but since there is no hardware button for making calls I dont really see any problem with pocket dialing - just no lock Also, there are programs to solve that such as chompsms which lets you do pattern lock to use it...and there are others to cover all apps too. Hopefully this helps someone.
Sorry - Just saw a few posts down the same thing was posted. I guess I wont completely erase mine tho since I evplain it a bit more if there are noobs reading.
I dont have access to the market right now, can someone kind enough upload the APK for No Lock?
i really really need a way to wake up my legend with a key other than power as it is acting funny.
thanks a lot in advance...

But unfortunately this doesnt work for me... I think on Froyo there is no way around this. as my power button doesnt always work im going to downgrade to 2.1 and then use a custom froyo rom with this ability or maybe just stick with 2.1 for the time being...
a little update on froyo!
it seems that when you are charging your phone and using a program to disable sense keylock you can wake up your device. so I think on froyo they have prevented other keys to have power and be active....

thats interesting and i can confirm thats how my phone is working too...i just prefer using any key to wake up so my power button doesnt die quicker than it would normally
The right-click function mentioned in the topic would be an amazing feature to have in any android build. Being able to hold down on the screen for a second to bring up the menu is invaluable. Not to mention the amount of stress it would save on the Windows button..
Now this is only a request for the development of an idea I had for the current android builds. I do not expect anything to be done about it, only taken into consideration. If the work involved is too heavy and difficult to manage, then it doesn't have to be done. There are already MIUI builds that somewhat incorporate this idea.
whats wrong with pressing the windows button?
Some people have it in theur minds that pressing the keys too much will break them. Don't see why, if that happens you can't just buy a new set of keys from eBay to replace them...
Sent from my HTC HD2 using Tapatalk
Personally, I'd like to see someone develop a way of using the hardware keys to control the touchscreen. I'm really worried that, because of Android, I'm using my touchscreen more than it was designed for and I'm going to break it.
lol, yeah these people who break the hardware keys are obviously pressing them to hard or something. My HD2 is second hand, ive used it very often with the keys and they still work fine.
The keys are there to be pressed, its as simple as that.
have you seen software key panel app;http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865525
it brings in the screen 4 software button that emulate the hardware button
no need to press anymore the hardware button
if you search in the thread you will find some very good skins for this great app

it is easier to break hardware buttons by too many times pressing them instead of break touchscreen from pressing
many people like me have broke their buttons because of the need that android have of them

Android already uses long-click in a lot of situations, I'm not sure how your idea would be able to co-exist with that.

That's true. Although, my idea was to ADD a long-click/right-click function to, say, the Browser app. Instead of long-clicking a link, picture, etc, you could long-click the page and bring up the options menu for the Browser app, not necessarily just links, pictures, etc.

That could not be done on a system-wide basis. Every single app would have to specifiy what part of each screen brings up the "right-click menu" and what should be on that menu.
If they were going to do that, they'd have done it already. And that is what the menu button is for.
Most of the problems caused is due to the frequent use of the lock unlock button, so I was thinking if we could if at all possible, not use the button!!
->The first thing is that if we could re-map the function of that button to some other button, like to the call button which is useless! We have the kind of remap in the Windows phone roms, something of that kind for the Android roms! Maybe!!
-> OR maybe create a script that runs so as to lock the screen as if the lock button was pressed! the code that actually runs when you press the lock button! a widget can be created to lock the screen and you can unlock it by just pressing any button!! This is just gonna require little programming!
This is just a thought that i came across, and my question to the Devs is that if at all any of this is possible, can we do it?? So as to save our almighty LEO!!
There are tonnes of apps and widgets that can do this already, just use one of those. I'm sure there's even a way to put it in the notification bar so that you have easy access anywhere within the OS.

Thanks for the reply.. Why are we waiting to have it in each of our roms then!! We must have it inbuilt in the rom so that all the button based problems are solved!
p.s can you name a few apps/widgets that you said can do the job??
I strongly disagree with that, there's no reason to have it built in into the ROM. I for one would never use it, because it's just so much easier to press the power button. Sure, it dies eventually, but by then most would have moved on to a new device. Having had this phone for two years now, I haven't had any issues with the power/lock button.
As for the apps and widgets, search on Google Play and find them yourself.
I have only tested on the Sprint N3 so far, I will test on the T-Mo version later.
In the past, Note 2, S4, etc., I was able to enable the ICS-style soft key by using the qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 trick. When I apply that on the N3, the System UI crashes constantly.
Is there a way around this? Is this a situation where the System UI is missing the icons or something else? I would very much like to have the soft keys back...
Thanks.
Edit: It has become clear that I will need to edit SystemUI to add the missing parts to get this to work. Please see post 5 below.

I am curious as to why you would want the soft keys back when the hardware buttons work with the s-pen and you should be able to reprogram the function of the hardware button if you have root.

Preference. The hardware Home key is mechanical and the "feel" is different. I like having the consistent touch experience of the on-screen soft keys. I especially miss the ICS customizable soft keys where I was able to customize the location and menu, but that is another story.
In my N2s, I turn off the backlight to the hardware keys and used the on screen soft keys. Worked well for me.
Oh yea, the soft key/NavBar also provides a dedicated button for switching between apps that the hardware doesn't.
I found that the S4 needed its SystemUI edited to enable the NavBar. At the very least, the images are missing. I believe the same goes for the N3. See this post:
[GUIDE][MOD] Enable navigation bar 4.2.2
I can use some help on porting the edits to N3. Anyone?
I've been looking for a solution for a long time now and now finally, I found it!
Thanks! Let me know how it works out for you
Did anyone get this working?
Could someone provide the SystemUI.apk?
