Android Tablet - Epic 4G General

Hey guys, I figure I would ask you as I respect many of your opinions. I am looking to get an android tab. I have a netbook now that I really just use on sundays to track fantasy football on Yahoo (i think it uses flash for live updating). I am looking for a tab that can at least do that, any more and that is great.
What I am looking at;
Nook Color for $150 (planning to run CM7)
ViewSonic gTablet for $250
HP TouchPad $99 (I know not android, yet...)
What are you thoughts? Will a nook color give me my live fantasy football scores? Is the 10 inch gTablet screen that bad? What else should I look for? As you can see 250 is my range.
Thanks for the help!

i'd do the HP if you can... i have all confidence that they will get android in some form on it. if not the nook is light and cheep
actually i joked in another thread that the HP would have CM7 before the epic... now i'd actually bet on it. i have a feeling the HP will have CM7 before we actually get GB source. that was not a dis on the devs btw. that tablet is a hot item right now that the epic never was. there's a 500 dollar bounty on android for it right now

Definately check out the og galaxy tab, its got more ram than ourepics do

I just ordered a Nook Color yesterday. Sounds like a great device with lots of development. The biggest reson I got it was for its portability. WebOS is great and i'd love a touchpad but goodluck finding one at the firesale price at this time.

I've got a Nook Color for my school age kid (couldn't force myself to pay $400-600 for a full blown Android/iPad). Running CM7 from uSD card on it. Kid's love it.

Ended up going with the nook color for 150. Thanks for the insight guys. I could not find an HP Touchpad anywhere in GB either.

Where are you seeing it for $150? I would consider one at that price. It seems like it's $250 everywhere I look.

I just grabbed the hp.... I have full confidence it will have android soon with the big bounties out there.

If you're not adept at rooting look up Nook 2 Android. Its a card that can dual boot stock nook and cm7 images. They have them on Amazon. I'm going to root mine though since the N2A card does not come with an overclockable kernel from what I have read.

I was gonna say, we love our nook. Pocket legends is sick. But she slid out of sons hands and landed on edge cracking screen. Simple fix for 70 bucks. Seriously a great tab with cm7. Just no hardware buttons, but there are many workarounds.

You can get them on Craigslist for $150 once in a blue moon. I ordered a refurbished one from Buy.com last night for $184 shipped and it has a one year warranty. They usually go for between $180 and $200 on Craigslist.
OP, I'm sure you already know this or will know soon but installing Nook Color Tweaks from the Market will resolve the anemic external speaker volume problem as well as a few other things.

Yeah, I am just starting to dig through the forums now. I did get it on Craigslist, All I have seen were between 180-220, and this was was listed at 175 so I figured they didn't do much research as to what they sell for.

Is the Xoom really worth buying right now? I love the sound from the unit but...

The unit itself has been on the market since February and its had its shortcomings...
It seems whenever I go to the store to play with tablets they all have their faults...however, the Xoom just feels like a real slate (great build quality)
My gf got me a Toshiba Thrive for my birthday. I didnt do any research before (testing them out in person) and I was really unimpressed with the build quality so we returned it.
Asus Transformer has great screen and decent build quality, but the sound is TERRIBLE. The IdeaPad was pretty nice as well - but the display was dimmer then the Xoom and its build quality was so so (lots of flex in a tablet - no go for me)
My real struggle is that the Xoom is still $499. It really is worth more like $449 and at that price I would get one.
Thoughts? Opinions? Please share.
You get what you pay for. If you want an android tablet, the xoom is still the standard. If you can wait until the fall there should be more options.
Shop around. They are turning up for $399 from time to time in some places.

I just bought one a week ago. It is one of the best purchases I made. Price is always gonna be an issue because if all the tablets drop in price you'restill gonna be asking whether its worth the extra money. I love my Xoom... if I had had $800 when they first came out I would have found it worth it then.

Yes, for my money, it's also the best tech investment I've made in years.
Thanks for the replies so far guys!
Ultimately these tablets will always be getting better - like cell phones.
But after a year or two im sure I can get something else if I really wanted it. At work I have an IPad 2 just for document purposes and display presentations and I dont like it at all.
Just wanted to see where everyone stands and if they are happy with the purchase...you do get what you pay for and the Xoom seems to have fantastic build quality with no flex.
I paid $399 for mine and I love it. I would deffinetly consider worth it for another $100 if you cant find it for that. I love it more than any device I own, including my phone. I even have my texts forwarded via bluetooth to my Xoom and use it for texting. I'm a student working part time minimum wage retail job so I don't have much money, yet I still don't regret dishing out the $400 for it.
Cheers!
I picked mine up for $399 refurbished from woot and I love it. As others have mentioned, there have been a few places to have them new for that price, but I would definitely be willing to pay the extra $100 if there's not a place to find it for $400. I was always a little skeptical about how useful a tablet could be but the techie in me took over and I kind of impulse bought it when it showed up on woot. I have to say that I'm very glad I made the purchase. I've been using it a lot more than I anticipated and I love it. I prefer the design and feel of the Xoom more than the other available tablets and from what I've seen, it has the best development so far. Though it's only been about 1 month or 2, I'd still pick the Xoom over any other tablet available.
The biggest question would come down to whether or not you think you'd use a tablet. If you think you'd use it, then I'd definitely recommend it, even at the $500 price tag.
Still you can get one on ebay for like 250-300 if you don't want to pay 400-500$.

i got mine 10 days ago from amazon for $429, a new wifi one, not used or refurbished...plenty are available for $440-$450...3g models r a lil higher...+$50-$60...but ask urself do you realy need a 3g model...i personally dont mis it...i hav a dell streak 5 as a phone n do wifi tethering wen i need to...i got a belkin slim folio, zagg shield n alupen stylus from amazon itself...altogether cost me about $495...i consider it to b a snag....m in india, n here the xooms market price is still $700 so i got a steal...my fiance's in the US rite now so i just asked her to get me one... seriously i promise you, you wont regret it...its still the best... just go with xda n no galaxy tabs 10.1 or otherwise or even ipad2 comes close to it... i'm a happy camper...
What I also forgot to mention...
My GF bought me a Thrive and we returned it. Build quality was subpar - not stylish nor ergonomic at all.
NO Development community, although the tablet is new and that is to be expected.
Xoom seems to have custom ROMS and Kernels - although Im more of a purist anyway (AOSP on Phone) So I would probably be more interested in Kernel Dev than anything else.
I paid 750 for mine when it first came out. I'm happy with my purchase. Custom kernals and mods make it even better...and yeah,I could've waited and paid less...what's the fun in that?
I picked up a Xoom from Newegg last Thursday and I must say this thing is awesome. Newegg is currently selling them for $479 with free shipping and a $40 Newegg giftcard.

Im gonna buy a xoom I just cant decide on if I should get the wifi only or with the 3g ?

PS I was at Best Buy and there was a older lady playing with the tablets and got so frustrated and tossed her hands up in the air and said screw this I cant figure these things out
yes its worth it.
i started with a gtablet just to see if i would use it. wound up using it more than my desktop or notebook. i used the gtab for about 3-4 months
the screen on the gtablet is horrible. so i decided to buy a hc tablet with a better screen. my first choice was the acer iconia onsale at target. after 2 swapouts due to faulty hardware i bit the bullet and got the xoom. that was a week ago.
it blows any other tablet i tried out the water. i so do not regret it.

If you have an android phone you may be able to bluetooth tether it to your xoom.
If you google "xoom tether droid" there's a how to several results down from androidcentral (since I can't link)
Android phones with Gingerbread installed support WiFi Hotspot tethering. You can turn your phone in an access point for your Xoom tablet.

[Q] NC vs KF

So I finally picked up the NC last week and enjoy the product, but I'm in my 2 week return period and now the Kindle Fire pre-order is out. I'm a prime member, Appstore free daily app grabber, with 5 Kindle's under my account. Seems like a no brainer to return the NC and get the KF, right?
Get the Fire and pls tell us how you like it.
I say return it and wait a little bit until BN releases Nook Color 2
No walled garden for me, thanks. If you're already happy with the system for the Kindle then you'll probably like the Fire but it looks too dependent on streaming Amazon content. Without 3g/4g all that streaming will be limited to wifi. No sd means 8GB is all the content you can hold at one time. I guess the price is good for a dual core processor but I think I would keep the Nook and check back in 6 months or a year.
The 8 gb seems like a decent size for minimal apps and music\photos, but I think Amazon's idea is for us to stream it all. Constant wifi would be required to gain the most from this. No 3g/4g is not an issue with a rooted LG Revo on my hip.
...but the NC is very nice {BORAT}
The price point on the Fire looks good, but IMO until we see whether or not it can be hacked, run custom roms, etc, I wouldn't get it.
A lot of people here will disagree with me, but I'd get the BlackBerry Playbook (which you can score for around $250 right now) over the Fire.

If it were me it is a no brainer to keep the nook as there is basically nothing worth upgrading for and with no SD card or hardware buttons. It will be a pain in the a$$ to get it rooted.
The only thing you are gaining is a dual core CPU but it is pretty useless when stuck in a walled garden with no way out.

Wow, I'm surprised Amazon is not keeping this exclusively to their site, but I suppose more vendors means more sales for them.
This changes everything. I happen to have a one hundred dollar Best Buy gift card. I am awfully tempted now...
Office Depot had signs up today, but I didn't see if they were taking pre-orders.
I highly doubt this, by the way, it's still not clear whether wifi in other countries will work for Kindle Fire, since those large treasures on Amazon is one big reason for me buying a KF
Just cancelled my Amazon preorder since they just announced that it will be available day one at retail. No need to wait 2 days for mine to ship when I can just walk in to a Best Buy on Tues at 9am and pick one up.
Know this is an old thread, but I'm looking to get one for Christmas and noticed they had them at my local Walmart. I want to play with one first. And the nook tablet too. Walmart had a nook display unit but all you can do is turn it on and see the "you must sign in and be connected to the internet to continue" screen, not a good demo.
My big dilemma is can a 7" screen replace my netbook?
I'm also thinking the slightly bigger and older Vizio tablet. Having a universal remote in the tablet is actually something I think I would use a lot.

One of the supervisors at my store (I work at Walmart) got the Vizio tablet when we had it on sale for 198 dollars and got the 10% discount on that. She says it's good for certain things, but the remote control thing is wonky.
Also, the Fire isn't designed to be a replacement for a netbook. My netbook is used for long-term keyboard use things -- IRC, writing, etc. The Fire is more for games and stuff. Although, the SwiftKey X hack makes it better...
I bought mine at Target yesterday.
I got mine at target.
Anyway It could possibly replace a notebook if they ever make a keyboard for it. If they did I would get it so fast cause then I could stop logging my 2004 laptop to school

I was meaning 7" vs 10" size difference more than functionality. I have a netbook to have a compact web browsing device, with good battery life. But my netbook's battery is broken, and charge port is wonky, so it won't always charge, and when it does it only lasts like 30 minutes. But, its out of warranty, so I am looking to replace with KF instead of fixing it. I have other computers laptop for full computing needs.
I played with a Nook Tablet, the screen wasn't as small as I thought it would be, seems well sized.
Those that got their KF at target or best buy did they have displays to use? I think I am leaning towards the KF to save the $50 over the Nook Tablet, but still want to use it before buying.
Then I saw the best buy black Friday ad ... 10" honeycomb Asus transformer tablet for $250. But I hate fighting black Friday crowds, especially best buy. I've sworn three times to never do best buy on black Friday ever again, but they keep luring me in.

Thinking about n7 vs flyer...?

i'm debating between the htc flyer and the n7, but my main concern with the n7 is all the issues that have been discussed and people having had to do 3 RMAs, etc. So is it still worth it?
I'm not sure what the defect rate of the current Nexus 7s are now, but as far as alternatives go, the HTC Flyer is completely outclassed with its single core processor. If you're considering alternatives, you should really look for something with a dual core processor, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7".

well im looking to spend $250 or less, new or used. I'm not looking to compare the flyer and n7, as i already know it would be unfair. I owned a nook color and was very happy with it, enjoyed my tf101 but the screen was a bit big for my tastes.

If you liked the Nook Color, why not consider the Nook Tablet?
EDIT: I would also take people's complaints here about "defects" with a grain of salt. Yes, of course there are always going to be real manufacturing defects in a product line, but geeks tend to be more...particular than the average consumer. If you're really concerned about it go to a retail store and open it right there to make sure it's to your liking. At least that way too you can return the same day if needed.
Do it. Eventually you'll get a good one, hopefully on the first try.
You won't be dissapointed coming from those other devices. I'm still rather impressed having a transformer prime, just how well this thing does.

That would be the wrong move. Sure it goes from a single to dual core processor. But your left with a tablet that is so locked down, and has practically no development. Vs. the color which was pretty cool in its day and has tons of mods. I was very dissapointed after I got a nook tab for my girlfriend.
There is a nook app, and a kindle app. There's no reason to have a nook or kindle after the release of the Nexus. IMO.

I'll admit, I did get a replacement. But that replacement seems good so far. And from the play store, it wasn't really all that much of a hassle. If you can find it locally, it's even less hassle.
I just think in the 7" form factor, it would be silly to get anything else, if you don't like samsung. (me included)

received mine on monday, perfect condition. i cant complain about anything on the n7, even if i wanted too. for the price, nothing out there even comes close.
Coming from a single core 7 inch tablet, I can say that going with the Nexus 7 is the better choice.
The issues people have been having is due to their very meticulous nature.
Screen separation? There's a guide to fix that. You can send it to Asus to get it fixed, but you can spend 15 mins to fix it yourself.

Well i happen to be one of those meticulous natured people, when i buy something i expect at the very least that it would be in the condition i paid money for. So once a few more people chime in i might just go ahead and buy from the play store, unless there's somewhere better/cheaper/faster. I checked local close by stores and they are all $250 not including tax yet...for comparison the play store total price is $231.85.

I think I read somewhere that the Galaxy Tab 2 7" is on sale this week at Walmart for $250 with a $50 gc, which brings the net price down to $200 if you want to count the gc as cash. Any reason why you don't like Samsung tablets? You can always load a custom rom if you don't like Touchwiz (which I don't).

As the title states, I had the Sprint version of the HTC Flyer, and I liked it a lot. It was relatively snappy, running Honeycomb 3.2, and I had 32GB onboard and a 32GB microSD card in it, so I could carry around a fair amount of music and movies for airplane rides, etc.
I ended up leaving it on an airplane, and I was dejected for a full week before I decided to pre-order the Nexus 7. I got it through MacMall and it has been pretty solid so far. Very slight raised screen on the left side, but literally 1mm tops, and not noticeable. It's not spongy, but it does give if you press hard on the screen (which I never do). As for Jelly Bean 4.1, it is hands down superior to Honeycomb in every way shape and form, and you can definitely tell the difference in responsiveness with the N7. Loading apps like Netflix, Pulse, Kindle, etc. is at least five times faster on the N7 vs. the HTC, and it should be. Also, I paid $230 for the HTC when it was on sale last year, and while I don't regret that amount paid for it, the $249 (no tax + free shipping) for the N7 is a great deal, assuming you get one in good shape.
I would recommend buying from a local retail store so you can exchange and exchange until you get a good unit. It seems like there are a lot of faulty ones out there, but then again, this is a forum where people are going to go to gripe about their issues, not bask in the glory of their perfectly functioning devices.
Nexus 7, without a doubt.

I'm just not a fan of Samsung stuff in general, I've tried their stuff and read reviews and there is always some issue that has didn't play in their favor, ie: looks, cost, etc...As my signature says I'm an HTC and ASUS fanboy, I guess part of it is I just like the underdogs, like how I like AMD instead of Intel.

Thanks, for the detailed review/personal anecdote. I will wait a bit before buying since it can only get cheaper as time goes on (i hope).

duely noted.
I haven't had a single defect on my tablet. Its beautiful, fast, and priced to change the game. I would not hesitate to buy this tablet, unless you have severe OCD, then I probably wouldn't buy any tablet or electronic device, as you will certainly find something to bother you if you look hard enough.
I also owned the HTC EVO View 4G (HTC Flyer) and sold it before buying the N7. It is lighter, slimmer, faster, better screen, and just all around better.
Don't get the Flyer unless you can get it for $100.

thanks for the input, i'll take this into consideration.

Just ordered my wife one of these for Xmas. SCREAMING good deals on Newegg/Tiger

She wants an "ipad" but by that she means a tablet. I can NOT justify spending $500 on a 16GB ipad or $400 on a 16GB Nexus 10 for that matter. The Infinity is really the only high end one that I would jump on but that is way overkill for what she is doing (pics, vids, music, web browsing, kindle). So I started looking for "budget" tablets and it was down to this or the Xoom. Xoom is $259-$270 manufacturer refurbished but we all know the TF101 blows it out of the water and Newegg/Tiger are selling them for $229 refurbished right meow. I trust Newegg and they have an amazing RMA policy AND they have extended returns all the way through January 1st no questions asked and free shipping. Kind of hard to beat.
Newegg deal $229 free shipping
Very excited to be getting this. She is not crazy big into rooting or ROM'ing but I'll be on here looking around so if she has any complaints that can be addressed by a ROM or something (like cleanROM on the Infinity) it'll be GTG.
Any advice for me before I wrap it up and leave it under the tree for her to wonder wth it is? Obviously going to test it as it is a Refurb so I have time to send it back and get a new one if its bad but is there like... MUST have mods to do to it or should it work fine for her out of the box stock ICS? Again, she is not an Android nerd like I am and only cares that it works and is fast for what she is doing. She wont' be doing any gaming minus light stuff to shut up our 4 year old in the car lol.
Thanks XDA
Any reason why you aren't considering the nexus 7 for her?
Size and expandable memory. Like I said she is going to be using it for pics, videos, books and browsing. Size matters to my wife. Lol
why are you not considering tf300? it's Tegra 3 and you can get a brand new one for around $270. There were a couple of deals in the last week for that amount and i'm sure there will be more of these...

I've had a TF101 from day 1 and just got a Nexus 7 to replace it. The TF101 has been good to me but wanted something faster, that could playback high profile encodes, easier to hold and under 400 bucks. I strongly considered the Nexus 10 but 16GB isn't cutting it anymore and I'm not paying 100 for another 16 gigs. I prefer non-metal construction so I love the nexus devices. The metal corners of the TF101 cut into your skin after a few mins. The no SD card was a big deal to me too but then I learned you can mount external storage if you just get a USB OTG adapter. For movies and music, not apps. I will miss the back camera most of all for video chatting, showing people things and my 1 year old doesn't exactly sit still. You will enjoy the TF101. If you want another used one let me know

Would love to see where. I can always return the tf101 to newegg no questions asked and have time to get a tf300.

I agree here, return te TF101, while it is still a good tab, don't get me wrong, but getting her the 300 would actually be A LOT better in the long run. Less issues, JB out of the box, and only minimal mods to make it work fluidly. If she is a heavy texter, then I would suggest preinstalling a few apps like Tablet Talk (by one of our DEV'S here.) and maybe a few others that you think she might want to have on it.
But definately return the TF101 and get the 300. You're only a few bucks more into it, and in the long run it will be further supported. ASUS has already stated that they will provide KLP for the TF300 and up, where as the rest of us will be stopped at JB (for official ROM'S).

Oh yeah I had no idea the TF300 was available NEW for that price. And the nice thing about getting it at BB is I can get a 1 or 2 yr warranty on it. I think I could have with Newegg too but I like being able to take things to the store and talk to a person, even if it is the geeksquad...
Going to order the TF300 now and I'll RMA the 101 to Newegg when it comes in probably tomorrow.
Edit: Just ordered, picking up in store, $299 after tax, the TF101 REFURB was $246 after tax so an extra $53 for a MUCH better tablet. And factor in the $25 gift card and that makes it $274. I can use the $25 to get a present for my brother in law or something so with the gift card only $29 more to go to a new TF300 from refurbished TF101. You guys rock and THANK YOU SDFGHI for those links. Heck I almost bought two but I don't see myself using a tablet really that much. I think the screen on my smartphone is big enough and if not I got a lapdock for it for $50 last month that turns it into an 11" Android netbook. If I do get one for me I'll probably be a selfish ass and get the Infinity for me lol.

You are quite welcome from my end. At least we can see that you thought it through clearly and decided that a LITTLE more for NEW was better then a little less for refurbished. Correct buying it at BB you can get the extended warranty, get the ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE ALSO. Found that out with my wife's DSLR, strap holder broke, letting the camera fall from her neck and hit the iced over concrete. It looked like that scene from Terminator 2 when the liquid metal terminator got froze then shot and exploded.
Sadly (not really) they no longer made or had available the same camera I had initially bought my wife, so they had to *sigh* upgrade her to the next one up. Now if I buy something from them I make sure to get the max extended warranty and the accidental damage coverage.
Also as a side note, just root it before she even opens it. Set it up for side loading and all all ready.
I might root it... I dunno its all nice in the shrinkwrap right now and I'd like her to open something brand new. Then again I'd probably be better off checking it... And damn I completely spaced my own advice on getting the protection plan. Probably should gander on back and pick it up for the tablet. Either way she's going to flip **** because she says she doesn't really want anything for xmas but I KNOW she is dying for a tablet.
