So do I need to replace my official kernel when I change my boot.img?
Sent from my u8800 using XDA App
He must be joking!
No, you dont have to change anything!
Kernel is the most basic core of the operating system. Something very complex for the likes of me and you.
You just have to flash the rom.

And the actual "kernel" is a part of the boot.img. The boot.img contains a kernel, and a ramdisk, that's all.
Thank you. I am a still a learner...sorry for the stupid question

If you install one of the three main-custom-ROMs here on xda, you do not need to worry about that. You don't even need to unzip the zipfile. Just install via PerfectRecovery which you can get here.

1st. I didn't create this ROM, just asked Kenia1234 what to change and did it.
2nd. Kenia1234, Chiledog, Dexter_nlb, and myself WILL NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR PHONE!!!!!!!!
This still has the button mapping problem and the auto rotation problem, If you know where a kernel(reoriented for SENSE on this device) is or someone that will make it ask them to do so, and post a link!(PLEASE!!!!!!!!!)
I want to thank Kenia1234, Chiledog, and Dexter_nlb for making this beast ROM, hope to see more progress made!
If already on MIUI or CM7, just reboot into recovery and go to mounts and storages>wipe system, data, datadata, cache> flash GalaxySense.zip and enjoy!!!!!!
Download the following Files-

3. Flash back to stock, if you don't know how- http://www.mediafire.com/?0w2y31maz8mdom4
4. BACKUP EFS FOLDER ONTO SD CARD OR SOMEWHERE ELSE!
5. Flash MIUI/CM7 in recovery, reboot, let it boot ALL THE WAY UP.
6. Reboot into recovery, go to mounts and storages, format system and data and datadata and cache.

b-eock: I just want to get some clarification on the installation process. I believe the installation process for getting to MIUI changed a while ago where you no longer need to flash the cm7-initial kernel, efs backup, etc. You just have to be on 2.1/2.2 bootloaders and have CWM installed then flash the MIUI zip (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
Would this process not be the same for GalaxySense or am I missing something?

Which kernel? When you flash MIUI, it includes it's own kernel correct? So would it be the MIUI stock kernel that you need?
And about backing up EFS, if MIUI no longer requires that step, as in it does this as part of the flash process now, why is it necessary to do it before flashing MIUI? Just trying to get clarification. Seems kind of strange to me.
This states using the new CM7/MIUI flashing procedures as well.
I will try this in the night!

GalaxySense has existed since April for the Galaxy S i9000 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044637). This is simply a port to run it on the Captivate (which has also existed since April or May by following the Escapists instructions).
Projects like this is why an AOSP based kernel is so important. AOSP removes all of Samsung's proprietary issues and allows any other ROM that has been ported to AOSP to be ported to the Captivate. CyanogenMod, MIUI, and GalaxySense are all using the same sources to build from..
so here's the thing. i am plannig to upgrade to official 2.3. i was simply too afraid to do it for now so i would like to ask you guys what do i have to do BEFORE upgrading. first thing i should do is to backup IMEI, right? and how do i do that? anything else?
i know how to upgrade (dload...etc), i just want to do all (safety) preparations

Also remember to revert to the original partition layout, if you changed it using Geno's script. you can revert back later.
bootloader becomes inaccessible after 518 version. read the guide on getting the pink screen after you upgrade.

Then you will have to replace it with the originals
do it carefully , take a backup first .
another way would be replacing the files in the mod zip by original and then flashing it again by cwm .

So all right, I thought that when a newer version of Android came out and I am for example on CM10.1, I can update the android version and ROM by flashing a new bootloader and baseband, then flash the ROM and Gapps you want.
But today I read about someone who didn't accomplish to install a 4.2.2 ROM when he was on 4.2.1 so he installed factory image.
Can someone now please tell me what you need to do, so I am prepared when KLP arrives.
Thanks in advance!

Best advice I can give you is to learn fastboot. You can download images from Google once released and manually flash each thing that you want to update. You just unzip the files and fastboot flash them to your phone.

I think I am misunderstood.
I meant how to upgrade android version if going from a custom rom to another custom rom.
So for example CM10.1 Android 4.2.2 and going to Xenon HD Android 5.0
Thats possible right?

Most developers list instruction on how to install from different custom roms in the install method if they differ (example post#2 in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075444). If not, you could post in the thread of the custom rom to see if there are any special steps for that rom. I would advise reading through the first few posts of the custom rom to make double sure they didn't explain how to first.

Why do you prefer that even of you install the same file? But the answer on my question is that I can install a 5.0 ROM if I just flash the new bootloader and baseband?
Thank you for helping me!
Yes, as I answered that earlier
As for why I prefer fastboot - I always like to do everything manually. I then know I'VE done things right as an updater-script in a CWM ZIP file could be wrong/corrupt. It's a safety thing. Plus, once it's done it's done so I wouldn't have to do it again unless I wanted to downgrade Android to 4.x

But with CWM you also have to flash once I think? Because you dont flash it on a ROM, but before a ROM so the baseband and bootloader will last untill you install another I think?

Fastboot flashing is permanent - once flashed you don't have to do it again. A CWM ZIP can do the same but I, personally, DO NOT LIKE DOING IT THAT WAY. I don't know what else you want me to say?
Do what YOU want to do
