[Q] MPlayer on Android

Has anybody tried a new mplayer for android? Is it worth of giving it a try?

I'm a bit disappointed with the mplayer. I have several clips which I could play with the Toshiba Mediaplayer and these did not work very well in the mplayer.
I should mention that the clips were 720p and 1080p, but when played with the Toshiba Mediaplayer (which use hardware acceleration) the Folio plays them without breaking any sweat.
I think we have to wait for a video player that use the Tegra 2 hardware instead of using the CPU to decode mkv.

Yes, I did some testing myself and I was disappointed with the quality. Normal SD AVIs from web were pixelized. There was no antialias or smoothing. The pixels of video were just magnified.
Rockplayer with HW support produced much better output.
Maybe for some formats not supported with rockplayer. Lets hope that in some future release it would be better. I didn't make any changes into config file maybe if I applied some filters, the result would be different.

Did you use a usb disk to play the clips from or did you try from a UPnP server? I am asking because I haven't been able to play any mkv from wifi connection with clips on my nas as the toshiba player always crashes

It's not possible to play mkv-files with the Toshiba Mediaplayer.
The clips I played are either in MOV or MP4-format.

Rockplayer read all formats. You choise hard or soft decoding.
For me is the best player

I haven't managed to get any player to play HD x264 mkv's properly. Mostly they don't even start or are just really choppy. Some have options for HW/SW decoding, but still nothing.
Tested so far (latest versions): Vitalplayer, Vplayer, Yxplayer, Rockplayer, Act1 player, Default gallery, ES file manager movie player.
Any suggestions? Running Foliomod 1.3d

Mplayer seems to play most .MKV files, but framerate is really poor. Anyone found any working solutions for HD video playback?

No not at the moment, but there are a few which in time could be intresting.
CorePlayer is one that I think will be able to play MKV, this due to the fact that they have their own codecs which are very effective and they use the hardware better. But its awfully quiet in the CoreCodec Forum.
They showed of their Android CorePlayer at CES in January.
Another one is the Video Player for the LG Optimus 2x which should support playing MKV in 1080p using the Tegra hardware. The problem here is to port the application to our Folio which has not been that successful. But this is something that could change over time.
More and more manufacturers are using the Tegra platform so I think it's just a matter of time before we se MKV support i several of them and perhaps they could be ported to our Folio.
As mentioned before you could use the MOV format and play video in 1080p without any problem using the Toshiba Media Player or the video player which comes with the Gallery.
But you would probably need to convert your video-files to the Mov format and that is one thing that I for one find a bit tedious.

Yeah, that's not an option =) I'll just wait or sell the Folio for another Tegra 2 device probably. Thanks!

Using FolioMod 1.4 and the Toshiba Media Player I can play MKV (720p, [email protected]) with almost the right speed. So there must be room for other improvements.
I really don't want to transcode every episode of all series.
Don't have any problems with quick rewrite to another container format (mp4, m4v), because this is fast and I need to get rid of AC3 in favor of ACC, otherwise no sound

NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.4-CM9-HWA No Hardware Acceleration Mx Video

Put the newest build i could find for this guy. Bought him off ebay for a cool 135 free shipping and has turned out to be amazing. Using him with my old Tzones plan running NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.4-CM9-HWA.
Everything runs great except videos. If I am streaming an MP4 its like an 80% chance the file will just be green and blurred like scrambled cable. Sometimes it will play just fine. Even crappy 240p files will be green in both the regular android player and MX Player.
Now I'm trying to see which type of 720p files the phone can play. After a couple of handbrake encodes it will play the 720p in MX Player but it will be frame ratey. The stock player wont even touch the file.
I check the decoding options in MX Video and only software decoding is enabled. Is there an ICS build capable of playing videos with Hardware Decoding.
Your thoughts guys !

Install MX Player and install the Armv7 addon for MX Player (it will be in the related apps or something in the play store) and use software decoding. I have also found 720p playback to be atrociously laggy, but I tried Inception at 480p and it plays great.

Installed and it definitely seems to be working with the green videos but 720p seems like a no go...
Is it the rom or is it the phone ?

Hmm, 720p playback is usually listed as a working thing but I don't see how NexusHD2 is in any way inferior to the other ROMs, it definitely has a comparable performance.

Best Video Player? Which one do you like the best?

I am looking for a good video player and have tried the following -
Mobo Player
MX Player
I have had great luck with Mobo Player on my HTC Droid Inc but it seems to lockup on my Nexus 7. So right now it seems MX Player is working the best on the Nex 7
Has anyone found one any better than the two I have listed?

I tried Mobo, MX, VPlayer and a few others, but BSPlayer is the hands down winner for me. I like the interface, and it has played my vids perfectly. MX player was good I thought, but when I played an mkv I had to set audio to software decode - BS Player seems to handle everything in HW.

BSPlayer for me as well. I love MXPlayer too but this one just plays every damn file I throw at it.

I found that BS Player is the *only* player that can play a video I use to test devices normally (AVC-1 (H264 1080p) and DTS 5.1 audio). VLC can play it fine on my Galaxy Note, but it can't do hardware decoding on the 7. Likewise, it crashes at generating a thumbnail for that same video.

I also like using Rockplayer Lite, I've yet to find something it can't play.

I use Mobo player with the new update they came out with for the Nexus 7 video plays fine.

havent gotten my nexus 7 yet but maybe vlc beta might work on it.

Voting for mx player.
What's the harm is running software mode? I have yet to play a video that causes slow down. Plus you can ramp up the volume more in software mode.

For everyone using BSPlayer, is it necessary to install one of the CPU support addons?

Another vote for bs player. Only concern is incapacity to lock screen rotation.

To be honest I don't remember, I don't think it did, but as I was trying a good few players at the time I forget exactly which did and which didn't. I don't have any codec listed in my applications list, but being totally new to Android I don't know if a codec would show up in this list. There is a free trial version, definitely worth a try imho.

Mx player was the only for me that used subtitles correctly and it works for every video file I use for it!

Mostly i'm using dice player or mx player for files on the device. Like the look of vlc but too buggy at the moment to really be usable for me.
Use plex for streaming but considering switching to bubble upnp as library browsing is faster and it sees my existing plex server.

I'm using MX Player Pro, and as far as I know it uses ffmpeg as a base, so once there is a Tegra3 add-on, I expect more files will work with HW decoding.
A lot of my older files avi/mkv/mpg/mov random bit rates and codecs, still plays them, but HW is usually disabled, or plays video but no sound. The SW decoder has played literally every file I've thrown at it, and does it pretty well, although SW fast mode is fugly.
New files using h264 etc, hardware decoding kicks in, and after watching a dozen or so episodes, it appears when it uses hw, its not as much of a drain on my battery.

ffmpeg tegra2 add-on does not affect MX player's HW accelerations. It is used by SW player.
MX can help SW audio track playback.
But Diceplayer accelerated H.264/MPEG-4 video without container/transport limitations.
If you want to play 1080p/QuickTime movie trailers , MX can not take advantage of HW video decoder, but diceplayer can do it.

I've been experimenting with this. I just want to navigate to a shared video folder on my Windows LAN, and play from there. I don't want to install server software on the PC. I have 2 file managers (ES File Manager, and File Manager HD). With File Manager HD, it wants to download the file first...so I think I will be getting rid of that. ES File Manager works, but when I right click and Open AS>Video, my drop down list only includes BSPlayer, ES Video Player, and the Android stock Video Player...no MXPlayer Pro. How do I get it in the list?
Secondly, BS Player has a network browser built in, which works great. It'll even add all the .vob files in a DVD folder. It won't use hardware decoding for the .vob files though, only software. I tried forcing it in the options by adding "vob," (V-O-B-Comma) to the decoder list, but it still plays in software.
Any idea on how to add MXPlayer Pro to the video players list in ES File Manager, and how to play DVD files in hardware?

Nexus 7 Movie Players w/ Subs

Hi, i've just ran into a bit of a problem. I was planning to watch Avatar (1080p) (.mkv format it is in) on my Nexus 7 to see how well it would cope. I started using mxplayer but it had no sound, dice player would play the movie so i then use BSplayer FREE and it worked. Job done. Until i found that i forgot to enable subtitles for the na'vi speech so i could understand. In BSplayer Free when i press in the top right, then select subtitle, then select active subtitle it doesnt find any, but when i use my computer there are 3 subtitle tracks within the video. I've also tried putting the .srt file in the same place, called the same as the movie, but it still wont find it.
Any ideas?

Moboplayer is laggy and doesnt play the sound. Wont use hardware decoding, attempts to use software decoding and sucks. Bad.
Vplayer Terrible lag.
QQ player Terrible lag.
It seems that only MXplayer and BSplayer play it fine, but MXplayer has no sound. Oh, forgot to mention that Mobo player found the 3 subtitle sets fine so it has to be the apps >.>

did you try SW decoding for MX?
Also, the full version of DICE player was made free last week. There is an option to manually select your sub file.

In MXplayer i get the 2 S/W options S/W and S/W fast. Both laggy and no sound. Going to try another method of coding the subtitles to the film.

MX works perfectly for me, just remember to keep it set to S/W mode and not S/W(Fast mode).

hmm. That sucks. I haven't run into the AC3/Tegra issue yet as SW mode has been able to handle my files, but I've only tested 720p stuff for MKV. 1080 MP4 was fine.
I'll check if I have any 1080p MKVs later tonight. I have a feeling most if not all my 1080 stuff is mp4 though. I really try and avoid MKV since it's a PITA for 360/PS3 and i've never gotten those "on the fly" converting media servers to work. Curse you MKV!

11gb of download son, glad my internet recently got buffed for free though!
At the minute using mkvmerge and Avidemux to see if either will hardcore them into the video itself properly and not softcode.
I spent almost 45minutes today getting the subtitles to match up with my copy of the film. Really frustrating getting that to work properly.

you should use custom plugin and libffmpeg.so on sdcard.

Fixed it, by default subtitles are disabled in BSplayer, for whatever reason that is, and then it worked :/ I had to spend ages altering the timing of subtitles though as the subtitles werent the ones for the copy i had Works fine now.

h265 hardware decode

is the phone capable of hardware decoding h265 videos?

with mxplayer in hw or hw+ mode ( not sw mode)
does it stutter ?
you can also try http://www.libde265.org/hevc-bitstreams/bbb-3840x2160-cfg02.mkv , but it is a 4k maybe too heavy for the phone

I'm unable to play the first file with either mx player or bsplayer.
HW mode black screen, HW+ extreme lag. SW similar (maybe 0.1x speed).

We probably need to download that codec in the description and point MX player to use it.
The first video works in VLC - better than on my Core 2 Windows even - but still get slow down in many scenes.

H265 hardware support will be hit or miss for a while, and sadly may never catch on due to the patent holders starting licencing shenanigans. See the article in the link
