[Q] Sudden battery drain - Acer Iconia A500

Has anyone else experience sudden battery drain on their A500?
I have three instances -- one I forget which ROM, one with Taboonay, one with stock ROM (3.1); all with HV kernels (2.2 x 1 and 2.5 x 1) -- where I leave my A500 and return some hours later (not more than 12) with the tablet off and the battery at zero. The battery stats show a slow drain for a few hours, and then a line straight down to zero. The breakdown doesn't show any suspicious app usage (majority is tablet idle), no "mobile data drain" or anything like that.
Anyone else run into this. I've tried a search without any luck.

I am having the same problem on a stock tab.
I have rooted and used Titanium to freeze unwanted apps - bit otherwise it is a standard tab. I suspect that wifi is not turning off even though I have it set to turn off with the screen (airplane mode is always on). I am trying to confirm that wifi staying on is causing this....

In the wifi settings you can choose to
1) leave wifi always on (default) or
2) only leave on while charging or
3) auto off, when display goes off
I'm using the 3rd one, and battery consumption improved!
But you have to wait some seconds after switching on again, until wifi is available.

This isn't slow wi-fi type drain that I'm seeing. It's rapid, from something to zero, straight line down on the battery use graph type drain.
Hopefully, with a change of kernel and slightly less OC'ing, it will disappear...

Repeatable fix for galaxy s battery drain

Firstly, this is in relation to the battery drain issue concerning the 'time without signal' bug.
Okay, I've done three repeated tests, all leading to the same results. Basically, it seems that when I restart/reboot my phone, a number of applications etc. show up in the 'battery use' menu, including 'Android OS' and 'Android Operating System', 'Dialer', etc. Battery drain at this stage is quite bad at around 8-10 (Battery ETA) percent per hour with barely any use. Now, when I plug my phone briefly into the computer letting it charge a few percent, and then unplug it (under usb setting, without detecting sd cards), these applications reduce down to only four in the 'battery use' menu (Display, Cell standby, phone idle and android system).
More importantly, the 'time without signal' info mysteriously disappears from the 'cell standby menu', and battery drain reduces to 3.4 (Battery ETA) percent per hour with me playing around with the settings/apps etc.
This seems like a temporary fix to what seems to be a phone radio searching/standby issue. Can others try what I did and report back? I have little knowledge in application development, etc. so I'm hoping someone can deduce the source of the problem from this information.
Also, my phone is a stock galaxy s i9000 from virgin mobile Australia.
Update: same effect also with wall plug. Phone must be on, and only after cable is unplugged, the aformentioned occurs.
Hi.
I also notice the issue.
For example, after 4 hours and 18 m, I'm with 70% of battery left.
And I didn't do ANYTHING. Just navigate through the menu.
I tried many ROMS and the issue remains. Now I'm running on the Darky's ROM, and it is really good. Someone says that reduces battery consumption. I didn't noticed that.
Anyway, I always do the recharge with the device ON but I don't see battery save. ~10% consumption per hour.
I tried everything to reduce the battery drain!
Now I'm testing SuperPower from XDA (you can find it on the market), it's amazing, it allows you to configure profiles in each states of the phone: awake, lockscreen, sleep. It can slowdown CPU speed, disable WiFi and Mobile Data, disable autosync, and more.
Sounds good each of these features, but remember that it is still a beta.
I'm using it right now, but as you can se, the battery drain continues....

Wifi battery usage while screen off

I noticed a huge battery usage with currentwidget (~70mA) while WiFi was on, but only about 4 mA when wifi was off.. So I think something must use very much the wifi, while the screen is OFF. I can also see in PowerTutor the usage of the wifi system... Can you help me with some ideas?
PS. I just flashed a new Radio Radio_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_SF but the problem still stands....
Yeah, I have a similiar problem.
Had my phone rooted, new Radio (Since Dec.) running latest LeeDroid.
Had my phone just the way i like everything, been very impressed with battery life over the past month with brilliant ROM updates.
Then randomly last week Wi-Fi usage shot up to the 60-90 mA level. No new Rom had been installed for 2 weeks, so it wasn't that.
Wi-Fi off was 1-4 mA.
- I thought maybe its the applications I updated; Uninstalled all of them
Didn't work
- Maybe its fiddly settings like SYnc etc that have changed since App updates etc...
No settings had been altered.
- Maybe its a cache stats thing, I'll do a full wipe (Via CWM in Recovery Mode, select "Wipe Data/FactoryReset" option) and re-installed an even newer version of LeeDroid.
Still the battery drained 7-9 percent an hour on Standby(Screen Off).
1) Is it my router?
2) Is it a faulty WiFi part in the phone
3) What else besides the other two could it be?
P.S. - After the new fullw wipe/ clean Modded Rom install, the wi-fi stats show that it never went to "Sleep" when I look at SpareParts stats....
i.e. - Battery was 60 percent -- Phone put into what appeared to be "Sleep Mode" (Pressing the power button once.)
-- 8 hours later battery was 15 percent!
Spare Parts showed "Time since Phone was in sleep" 8H
"Time since Wi-fi was in sleep" 8H.
Help greatly appreciated.

Question about sleep in Iconia Tab

Hello all,
Trying to find some info about some behaviour my Iconia has.
I love my device. Way more capable than my wife's Ipad and all that. There's only one thing that irks me: battery drain while the device is idle.
I also have a B&N Nook 1st gen (for books) and an EVO 4G. I leave and use the Iconia mostly at home, close to the WiFi. I'll take it out for long trips and such, but it stays close. I have it set up so that the WiFi antenna turns off when the screen does. Low brightness on the screen, will only charge the battery when it's low enough to charge, etc. It stills drains close to 6-8% if I leave it alone a couple of hours.
Earlier today I rooted the device and use Bloatware Freeze to freeze some stuff. Eventually I'll get rid of some of the gunk the tablet has installed. I want to figure out how to shorten that gap. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me that the tablet left alone consumes 8% of battery charge! I mean, if nothing can be done then so be it, I'll learn to live with it.
For my money I would bet that there is something hidden in the Iconia's OS build that thinks it is a 3G/4G device. Now, I'm wondering what would happen if I were to take the next (logical) step and put another ROM in it. Would this make a difference? If I can make the battery drain stop at 5% or less, that would make this perfect.
Thx!

I leave my device with airplane mode checked, and then re-check wifi (as airplane mode will initially turn off your wifi). I get no strange programs showing up in battery usage now.
Will certainly try...
I'll try this next time I head out. Will leave her in Airplane Mode and will check the battery level when I come back.
I did disable the GPS and all location settings. I do not need it to know where I am, since I have the EVO for that.

Right on, let us know if that helps ya out
Well I'm glad I came across this. I didn't even think about leaving the GPS on and consuming battery. Also, where did you adjust for your wifi to turn off when the screen goes off?
EDIT: Nevermind, I found it.
I am developing an app that uses bluetooth and I noticed that if I leave bt on my tab will go dead in 2 days, if I turn it off it can stay idle for several days before needing a charge. I leave the wifi on all the time.

Wow I don't even have 8% drain with Wifi on all the time. There maybe something else in the mix. Most of my drain is the screen as I set it to auto and in my home it ramps up brightness most of the time. Is it possible you have a rogue app? Have you tested the tablet 'fresh', ie: after a factory reset with 1 google profile set up?

This is interesting, on 3.01 & 3.1 I've had zero drain with screen off w/up to 16 hrs. Settings : Wi-Fi disconnect policy never when plugged in, location & security use wireless networks on & gps on. Airplane mode , always off. I can't understand why you folks are having these problems. Hope we find out. Oh & by the way that's not charging.
Forgot to mention I use Juice Defender.
Update
Well, after much tweaking I think I'm somewhere where I feel comfortable. As a disclaimer I don't take the Iconia with me on my daily commute. Again I take my EVO and my Nook with me. The tablet spends the entire time I'm out in the office at home, unused.
I disabled all screen animations and I'm using the tablet on the lowest brightness setting.
I disabled the GPS and all location-related settings.
I rooted the tablet and am using Bloat Freeze to freeze/disable some of the Acer 'junk'.
I put the table in Airplane mode before heading out.
Last night when I went to bed I didn't use it (I was reading a very good book and I did not use the tablet to watch any of my shows). So I put it in airplane mode after I played with the new Google Music app (Impressive!). I went to bed around 11:00 and woke up at 5:00. In this span of time, battery went down by 1%.
Used it this morning to tweet, check a couple of websites, email. Was @ 71% at 7:00AM. Came back close to 7:00PM. Battery was at 67%. Right now (8:50 EDT) it's at 1d 19h 55m on battery @ 59% charge. Heavy usage of TweetCaster, TuneIn Radio, Browser, Market, &c.
Mind you, it was not used for close to 8-9 hours or more. If I were to take it with me the consumption would be more, but then I would probably use Airplane mode when it was not in use. Besides, I can't use it at work b/c the wireless is not compatible.
I'll keep doing some research, but I'm comfortable. I accept the fact that it will drain regardless, since the OS is up. The previous consumption was too much, and I think I can live within the 2% - 4% consumption rate. If it can go down to 1%, though, that would be even better.
Any other ideas welcome.
beautiful Widgets comes with a widget to disable/enable wifi like we're all used to on our phones.
I loaded prime 9.3 today because I wanted to try a 3.2 rom (for GPS and sd-card reasons). On that rom I noticed the 3g settings were visible until I added the line "ro.carrier=wifi-only" to build prop. I was able to see cell standby show up in batt usage.
Not sure if you guys knew it or not but under battery usage you can click on the graph to see a graphical depiction of what hardware used the battery when. If GPS was active when it shouldn't have been you'll see it there.
Interesting...
Are you suggesting that the 3g apk is active on the 3.1 image? I posted this question to a developer in Market that has an app that kills this on the Iconia. Maybe that's the other 2% - 4% I can kill.
Prime is a 3.2 rom. You could try adding that line and rebooting though.
To the stock 3.1 image? Interesting. Any instructions?
You'll need an app like root explorer that will let you mount the /system partition as read/writeable. In the /system directory there will be a build.prop file that you can open with a text editor (root explorer has this feature built in). You'll see many "ro.xxx" lines. At the end of the first group you'll just need to add the line "ro.carrier=wifi-only" without the quotes. Save and exit the file. Reboot tablet. On reboot, it will read the values in build.prop.
On the prime 3.2 rom, the settings for mobile networks are visible without that line added to build prop. I was actually seeing cell standby in the battery usage list. I never saw that on the stock rom. I use a toggle button for the wifi to quickly turn it on/off from the home screen and that keeps wifi from using any battery while sleeping..
I really doubt that GPS is the culprit in your case. Did you click on the battery usage graph to see what hardware was using the battery during the period of sleep?
Also remember
The % charge that the system reports is not always a very accurate indication of how much charge your system actually has - what matters is up time and how long you can go between charges.
Airplane mode is your friend - no real need to disable animation (has nothing to do with idle charge) - the only thing I do is enable airplane mode when away from charger and not using my tab - some of the drain you are reporting could be due to your system scanning for open hotspots.
Also remember all it takes is one poorly coded app to totally screw your battery over - as you are rooted, quite easy to check for apps that relaunch themselves even after closed, apps that want to phone home every 60 seconds - etc.
Would highly recommend you take a close look at any non-stock apps that you have installed.

[Q] Battery Usage Page.. Spurious Info?

Ok, so I've noticed odd battery drain when the tablet isn't docked but in standby with WiFi off when screen off..
There are other threads/posts detailing how we can use CPU Spy and Titanium to "freeze" apps that may be cause battery drain in this scenario however the question I want to ask is.. just how accurate is the info in the Settings -> About -> Battery page? It lists apps/processes/services that have been using power but I often get things listed there that I never knowingly started, and certainly they don't always appear..
An example was recently I've been seeing entries for IM+ (which I installed but rarely use) and Media Server (I'm assuming this to be the Asus MyNet? Again, never used).
After a recharge and reboot.. the battery stats page seems to reset to some starting condition, usually listing Wifi, Screen and tablet idle as the main things. Then, after some time in standby (say overnight) those other items mysteriously appear (and for some reason the battery graph shows activity against WiFi and Awake even though I'm using that WiFi power saving mode AND when I wake the tablet up, the WiFi is indeed disconnected and CPU spy shows Deep Sleep)
..So last night I uninstalled IM+ and this morning I have Widgetsoid listed in the Battery Usage page.. something that's never listed there before... what gives? Its completely inconsistent.. sometimes overnight I'll get virtually no battery drain, and sometimes I do.. there's no pattern to it and no app/widget/process I can pin it down to, to freeze (not that I should have to but I appreciate that many have found this to be the only sure solution)

Terrible battery life? What gives?

Hey guys...
Just here to say that I unplugged this phone at around 5 in the morning, and around 5 hours later its already down to 74%.
What did I do? Only about 10 minutes of mobile hotspot, a 2 minute phone call, and three text messages. The rest just idling...
1/4th of my battery life for just that?
What the heck?
Everything is disabled and the screen brightness is low... Whats the matter with this phone?
Looks like something is keeping your device awake.
Can you please add some screenshots of your battery graph?
In addition, you can try to boot into safe mode. If your problem is gone in safe mode, a third party app is interfering.
If you're rooted, try installing Wakelock detector or BBS (Better Battery Stats) and check out what is waking up your device.
If you use Gas Buddy, it was known to be causing massive bluetooth wakelocks. Either uninstall it or update it to the latest version.
Set your wifi to 2.4 ghz only. On 6.0 and 6.0.1, the 5 ghz band has been causing abnormal battery drain and keeping phones from entering doze mode. Here's the issue being reported: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=197460
If neither of these make a big improvement, you'll have to use your battery stats (and if rooted, use Better Battery Stats or Wakelock Detector) to specifically see what's keeping the phone awake. In either of these apps, filter the view by "Alarms" or "wakeup triggers" and you'll see what the heavy hitters are.
Be sure to go into Location>Settings and turn off wifi and bluetooth scanning.
Hi.the maps app isvuding WiFi and gps even though both are disabled and I'm not using it... Any ideas?
