Hi,
I want to give something back to developers doing great jobs for smartphones. So I decided to mirror/host any roms, files, sources, scripts, projects.
I'm also not a friend of free hosting services with pop-ups, speed limitations, captchas or waiting time.
What you get:
- space... a lot of (~ 14TB, upgradeable)
- speed... 1000 Mbit up/down
- traffic... no limit
- uploading files via ftp account or web-script
- own subdomain with your (project)name (e.g myrom.xda-hosting)
- counter (so you can check out your hits)
What I want:
- Nothing, but you can hit the thanks-button
Requirements:
- no illegal stuff
- no abuse
- only project related files (size doesn't matter)
If you are interessted just drop me a PM, that's all.
cheers,
FabseN
P.S.: It seems not the right subforum, but I wanted to start in a section of my device.
Very noble gesture indeed. You deserve a "Thanks" at least for this
I'd suggest you start mirroring all the popular ROMs (do ask the devs first). I'm sure a lot of users would appreciate your services
sure, that was my first thought. but on the other hand... who will keep the releases up-to-date then? that's why I would like the devs to manage the mirrors by themselves so they can keep the links up-to-date.

NOTES:
The projects if developed will become a generic code baseline for each and every developer seeking codes.
This means projects in this thread is just to give everyone a basic working conceptual code which can be used anywhere in similar projects.
Just think people has great ideas to work on, but they dont have baseline code from where to start as most of them might be learning.
So this thread should help them out giving a working base code..
Any1 interested in building couple of OpenSource Projects for PPC? Ill post concepts.
Lets built next generations of applications together as open source which people can use to learn things as well.
The reason open source is so that everyone can contribute code for a project, and work together to built the best.
Anyone Interested???

Project 1: File Indexer for PPC [FIndexer]
Not Sure if it exists or already available.
Added:
01 Feb 2008
Description:
To index each and every file on PPC with custom options on indexing.
Purpose:
In todays world where 1gb,2gb,4gb cards are available, we store tons of file on our PPC like ebooks, songs, music, videos.
Many times it is not possible to search using a search utility as it may consume battery and we need to wait till file is being search.
This is the place where this FIndexer comes in to picture, where we index our file either manualy or scheduled.
And then searching a file will just take 1 second to return the results.
Language:
C++ is best language for this kind of project because of speed.
Database:
Not sure, but either SQL or Access DB.

Not Sure if it exists or already available.
Added:
04 Feb 2008
Description:
There are several backup tools which takes backup of PPC as a whole and can be restored easily, but:
How many times you feel that you had installed tones of applications and had taken a backup of those, and now when you get a new PDA, you feel like you dont want to again install all the applications installed previously due to certain reasons. By restoring the backup you end up again with all unrequired applications again.
This tool will help you to eliminate those problems by taking backup of each and every application configurations seperately with version informations. Yes now you can backup configurations of your games, your theme managers, your music player configurations and everything and have choice to restore them back again seperately as required.
Yes people who develope tools with configurations involved may have to coporate to tell us where they save the data of their application so we coders can add a plugin code to backup that particular application.
You can say that this tool has a builtin database information of most of the application to backup the configs.

zbop has done something similar to what you are looking for in number 4. You place info in reg. keys and then update that info via Mortscript (or however you want) and then it gets scrolled on a today screen line. I wonder how does open source developers meets and work together
I decided to give this initiative a fighting chance so I am going to 'sticky' this thread for one week.
If there are no takers I will 'unsticky' it.
Unfortunately, I do not currently have time to take part in this project my self as I am learning to program for Linux and OpenMoko specifically.

They don't, they start by making something, small, runnable, interresting, then share it, with the source.
This is more than i could expect from this forum. Thanks a lot.
This is a try to bring many great people in this forum and to develop something great for the forum.
Projects mentioned in this thread is just for start.
People can give their own new ideas so all work together and make something great for all the forum users.
i have no other intentions to start this thread other then bringing all together.
Starting this thread i thought i will also put my skills to help new guys.
Thanks again, and i hope this works out.
Here's a project idea that came up in the herald forums - use your touchscreen as a psudo-wacom tablet while tethered. Yes it would only be on/off and wouldn't sense pressure differences, but would still make for a cool project.
Heared of Android?
I guess you have heared about android,an all open-source linux based platform. And about the total of 10M bounty by Google as an award for the top 50 applications tha will be developed for the platform. So I'm guessing any developers with the skills to do such projects will have their hands full.
After all it sould be reasonably easyer to programm for an all opensource platform than for WM,a closed source platform.
Just my 2 cents.

Count the number of applications developed in this forum by everyone for so called 'closed source platform of wm6'
I do agree with your thoughts and dont say you are wrong, but hey thats a whole different ball game.
Always remember
When a company runs out of concepts, then company organises a competition with great prices. At the end company gets thousands of new concepts. winner gets the price, company gets new product.
same thing happens in open source world as well as close sourced.
If all think in this direction then i can bet, xda will run out of members.
not trying to defend, but this is something which simply cannot be debated or this is not a right place.

It was very dificult to find this kind of groups, thats the reason internet became so famouse, where we can find different people with great skills from different country and make things possible.
Hi there!
I've started this project to make an application to track myself when i'm out walking with my lovely touch pro.
Now i would like to make it open source and free for all trekking amateurs, and i'm posting this here to get some advice and to see if someone is interested.
I would like to make a simple and beautiful application, that doesen't drain the battery and that allow to record and repeat trails, store waypoints, integrate some mappings and exchange data with google earth or others apps. It might include some geocaching features and online sharing stuffs as well...
The project is hosted on http://code.google.com/p/trailcompanion/
and i've set up a development blog here: trailcompanion.wordpress.com
I'm not releasing any cabs soon, just some source code to start and see what we can get...
however, if someone would like to be involved just show up here!
*Edit 2009-08-30:
I've posted some updates and sample screenshots on the devel blog:
http://trailcompanion.wordpress.com/2009/08/30/post-holydays-update/
You could take a look at TrackME.
They also have a web interface.
It's all good, except for the sql requirement.
For my part, for small data, I prefer flat files.

Hi,
I would like to offer SVN hosting for ROM developers and their ROMs. This service is for HD2 ROM chefs totally free, without any charge in the future.
The only reason for this is that downloading from many web-based multiloads is very slow.
If you're interested, please, contact me through personal message.
I will write there SVN address, when first person upload his work: )
Note: If your ISP blocks SVN port (3690), it's okay, there is a choice of port redirection through port 80.
/* How to checkout repository */
Address of repository is svn://svn.dacesilianas.cz/xda-roms.
(If you have troubles with default port, you can use svn://212.80.85.51:80/xda-roms.)
If you're using Windows, you can download TortoiseSVN.
Great

Great idea! thanks for that
Great idea - i would love it - BUT - i think we already tried this with zzattack's mirror and I think there was difficulty in keeping it updates with all the latest releases.
You're right, but this can be caused only by ROMs authors.
Me, as ROM author, I would release my new ROM, so I upload it to SVN and everyone can download it, because our ROM repository is global for all ROMs.
Versions of ROMs will be written in SVN log and "by folder" I can show only versions of "my favourite" rom.
I think, this should work.

I would love a collaboration of sort to get a mirror interface setup (much like cloud) with nodes in US, EU and APAC. So Chefs upload to mirror nearest to them and the other nodes replicate automatically. And of course people download from node nearest to them.
Seems doable and makes more sense to me
I only want to make some possibility for ROM downloading. I hope, this should work and it's up to you, if you use it. If not, nothing is wrong.
Since ROMs are downloaded by only few people at once, this is okay. Try it and we see.
Dear chefs,
Everybody knows how slow some online share-site's are. It's frustrating for you, that every time you just finished your new ROM, you have to wait so long
The users are frustrated by the same site's because of all the restrictions: wait 1 or 2 minutes, it's to busy right now, slow connection, you reached your max. data quota for today, and all the terrible add's & pop-ups!
But, there is a solution! It is an application for your computer (win & mac) that will put a special folder on your desktop. It is a special folder because everything that you put in that folder, automatically synchronizes with your ON-LINE storage space! If You have more than 1 machine like me, you are glad with the next feature: synchronizing between desktops. I've installed the application on my Win7 desktop, and on my MacBook. So stop mailing yourself, end throw away that USB stick that's always lost
But, why you MUST use it, is the Public Folder in your synchronizing folder! When you have finished your new ROM, just put it in your folder (zip/rar is not necessary!) en right-click > provide public link!
This link, you post on XDA and every user can download your new ROM in peace! To test it, here is a link from the Mikenificent 13.3 ROM, I put in my public folder> LINK
See a short youtube video with all the possibilities
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFb0NaeRmdg
So, have I convinced all Chef's to use dropbox for your ROMS?
Use this LINK to get started whit dropbox. Why that link? It's a referral link, and when you use that we both get hooked up whit 250MB extra, besides the 2GB standard storage!
Thank you, and keep cooking!
https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTM5MzQ0MTE5
sometimes we use the online storage hosters (not me) to gain money cause sometimes( like me) buy a premium account to store everything, as many ppl do. and sometimes some storage dont erase our files...
So... whats the benefit in this cases to us? wich is the fastest Upload download rates you have? does it erase files when nobodys download them? you will get money for it? does we?
Mediafire dont erase my files... and dont have waiting time dunno if ppl is happy with it... and ppl do its own mirros in fact.

Maybe if you didnt post your own refferal link at the bottom of that post, you would have been more.. believable.
Dropbox is nice for small files. However the speed, sucks sometimes. In order to make files available publically you have to put them in the Public folder, where they will get erased 30 days later. So there's some drawbacks, but for a cook that only cooks for one or two devices and plans on updating the ROM at least once a month, it's not a bad choice
@OP:
Two items;
1) Here is a review that I did on the various file hosting services:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5492841&postcount=6
2) You have posted this in several forums. It's borderline spam, any more instances and your account will be suspended.
Thread closed.
Hi all devs for our fantastic phones...
I've got a site (xdafiles.net) with over 700 GB of space and 7,5 TB of bandwith/month.
Me, and many others with me, have been very frustrated over the random file sharing places that the devs use, and I've also seen many devs asking to get their files mirrored. I'll firstly make the files available through ftp/direct link download (available just after upload like any other server), and after files get added I'll make a ftp-browser for people to browse throught the files with a browser at xdafiles.net.
This server has very good speeds up/down, so no need to d/l with 100kb/s any longer!
DEVs, or other individuals wishing to contribute with some files related to xda, should leave a comment or PM me. I'll give you a user/pass for FTP. The adress for your files will be e.g. "http://xdafiles.net/novek/xxxxxxx.zip".
So, this is one of my possibilities to contribute, and hope that rapidshare etc. will no longer be used
I can also mirror stuff if need be. 100mbit, unlimited bw a month
