[Q] Which one: TouchNooter or nookDevs root? (NookTouch 2nd) - Nook Touch General

Not sure which one will be better for my device.

Both root the device and enable ADB over wifi.
But TouchNooter is easier and installs some useful things, so you should root your device with it (unless you just need to root it)

hi,
can you explain me how to make ADB over USB working?
I used NookDev root method, and it works correctly, but i just have ADB over WiFi.
Thanks

My mistake, I wanted to say ADB over wifi

Do both!
I say both Touchnooter first, and then read through the nookDevs one (and Xboxexpert's method too) to learn what you just did.
In xboxexpert's script there's some goodies, such as changing the left hand buttons on the Nook to be the Menu and Back buttons

To me, the issue with touchnooter is that it installs many things that are not very battery concious, and it ends up draining the battery too quickly... Like in a couple of days even w/o using it too much.

TouchNooter uses NookDev's noogie.img and modified RAM disk. It then enables and installs a bunch of things (e.g. install Android Market) that you'd otherwise need do manually. That's it.
They're not 2 different things; TouchNooter is an "easy" version of NookDev's hack.

Nook STR update 1.0.1

Fellows,
I've seen this one on Mobileread forum.
There is an update for Nook STR, namely 1.0.1, to be delivered during the week.
Nook 1.0.1 update
As per B&N site:
"The All-New NOOK Ver1.0.1 is a minor update based on early customer feedback that includes:
Connect more easily to Wi-Fi hotspots
Improved touchscreen responsiveness
Enhanced accuracy of battery meter"
I hope this one in root friendly.
Is there a way to block it?
Well I hope it's working, cause I had to go to root my nook at my friends house, since my computer is currently broken. I don't have the guts to try it first and then spend the whole afternoon fixing it and bothering my friend again if it won't work. Is there anyone with a backup who would give it a try?
I've downloaded it. It's 103 Mb in size.
But I still don't have the guts to install it and most likely lose my root...
Whoever tried the update please let us know whether it is root friendly...
I did the update but I have never rooted. Waiting for a more specialized ROM optimized for the eink display. My only reason to root would be a better pdf app, but I am getting along fine without that for the time being.
The update does noticably improve the accuracy and response of touch functions. It seems a little snappier to bring up some of the menus and navigating to bookmarks also.
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA App
edit...I did some tests and found that an epub stored on an 8gb class 6 Transcend microSD has improved seek time than when stored in the built in memory. Makes me eager to see what an ext4 file system/kernel/rom could do for this device.
Apeine have you tried the update yet? I've read a blog entry out in net land and it does not sound like the update would work with a rooted nook.
Someone posted a way to do the upgrade, that is supposed to run on a "cleaned" Nook (8 boot failures). But I don't want to lose the root either...
Anyway, all my files are in the SD, so I'd just have to do the boot failure. Maybe I'll try later on.
My Nook STR autoinstalled the update over wifi - I didn't even know there was an update coming down the line. Anyway, it definitely undid my root access. I noticed it when my custom front button mapping had stopped working. I still had access to ADWLauncher and any apps I had installed except for the back and menu button in Button Savior no longer worked.
HOWEVER, Z4Root seemed to work perfectly in getting the root back. Just install Z4Root, click permanent root and let it reboot and you should be fine. Wireless ADB isn't working but I don't mind too much at the moment. I used Terminal Emulator and Root Explorer to push my custom button mapping back on the device so now I'm up and running back to where I was.
Well, so I rooted it again, and now I managed to download astro, new market again, and everything is going back to its former place. So, no major problems during update, and I get to call that tiny arrow for button saviour much faster now!
Next step, ad-hoc hack!!! Still wish there could be a way to make it automatically...

How did you end up rooting it please?
nickveldrin, I used the touchnooter 1.6.24 again, and it went straight to the homescreen, no redoing the youtube-gmail login part, and it started working again...
I compared the v1.0.1 update's ramdisk.img and the uRamdisk used for rooting the Nook Touch.
They're the same, other than the modifications to start ADBd.
Looking at META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script, other than some firmware flashes (for WiFi), there doesn't appear to be anything that otherwise disables root?
Applied v1.0.1 to my Nook, and re-did the manual rooting process (replacing uRamdisk via noogie.img boot). Worked fine—I've a v1.0.1 Nook and am still able to ADB into the device, run Debian, etc.
So if I apply the upgrade will it return my nook to original status or will the effects of Touchnooter still be there? I didn't know about making a copy of the original root incase I ever needed to return my Nook and am now trying to back track. Or is there another way to totally remove the effects of Touchnooter?
Let's hear about the advantages the advantages of the update from those who have installed it. Anything that stands out?

Stuff I've noticed:
Better battery life w/ WiFi enabled (lasts an extra day or 2?)
Touchscreen feels more "responsive"
Screen refreshing is supposed to be better (as mentioned by B&N), but I haven't noticed it.
So it should be safe to update? Do you just update, boot on sd with the rooted forever screen and then you have your old apps and settings again?

ravn1,
Mine didn't got that way, but I didn't wait to see how others fared on their update. I had to unroot, reboot, update and root again. Everything was lost (data was on SD, so only apps were really lost).
But I see that some others managed to update without losing everything. Look carefully on which way is better for you.
I'm going to give it a shot. I have a "control" nook STR and a rooted nook STR, so I'll be able to compare.
I noticed (in logcat) that the BN service has started to acknowledge there's an OTA update, but it immediately warns, and does not start the download/update.
com.bn.devicemanager.ACTION_ALARM_WAKEUP
SoftwareUpdateManager( 1014): Cannot prepare download directory

This suggests that the OTA update can be blocked at this stage by making the Downloads directory inaccessible, although I'm not sure currently what path it's checking.
Where can I download the 1.0.1 update now that the 1.1.0 update is the only one available on bn.com?

[Q] New Nook N2E with 1.1.0, want to root

I recently bought a new Nook N2E. It actually came with firmware 1.0.0 strangely enough. I did slap 1.1.0 on there.
I want to root this baby. My question is should I revert to 1.0.0, upgrade to 1.0.1, root with touchnooter and proceed with everyone else, or just manually root it noogie style? Or I could stay at 1.1.0 and rip out of touchnooter the things that are not working. I'm just looking for opinions.

There's no simple answer to that.
In regards to Market things are a little messy on 1.1.0 right now, but we're working on it.
Some people claim they got Market working on 1.1.0, but GabrialDestruir is having trouble with finding a reliable solution for that and so do I.
If you absolutely want Market right now, then save you the trouble and go back to 1.0.1 + TouchNooter 1.6.24
If root is all you need atm, then just check out the updated uRamdisk thread.

ros87:
If he does go back to 1.0.1/TouchNooter 1.6.2.4, won't the B&N update eventually download automatically and force the unit to update?
there is a way how to (successfully?) block OTA updates, just google it out. It is simple sqlite3 db update.
Thanks for the replies. I decided that since Ive never seen the N2E running android, I would go 1.0.1 and Touchnooter and it worked like a charm. Only thing I cant figure out how to do is change Google Sync from Push to Manual
Updated my rooted Nook touch to Ver 1.1.0, after reverting to factory version as received. Used the two modified files in the SD image, and after the third boot it worked. I get Youtube, Gmail, and Market successfully. Now I cannot install any non-market apps. Somewhere I saw a menu and accepted permissions which I thought would allow installation of many non-market APK's. Guess I need some help, but close to success.
Jim
"Install blocked" message appears "for security, your phone is set to block... Android Market", I had earlier checked accept non-market apps.

NookColorTools, even if non market apps is checked, uncheck and check it gain.
I've had success three times rooting it with full Market and search.
Here's what I did:
1) Backed up with noogie.img on SD and Roadkil's DiskImage.
2) Used nookRestore on SD to restore /system.
3) Erased and Deregistered to wipe /data.
4) Skipped B&N registration (I don't need/want it).
5) Applied 1.1 firmware update.
6) Used TouchNooter 1.6.24 on SD, modified with 1.1 uRamdisk and framework.jar.
7) Triple booted TouchNooter (gave it five minutes each time), removed card, rebooted, skipped Google registration.
8) Youtube --> GMail --> Market. Downloaded a program in Market.
9) Installed SearchMarket and ADB Wireless Widget. Enabled non-market apps with NookColorTools. Uninstalled YouTube (someone said this helps).
10) Used ADB over wireless to push Vending.apk from here. SearchMarket is no longer needed.
My original thread (with links and other details) is on MobileRead in the nook sections. As ros87 noted, GabrialDestruir hasn't got it to work, but I see no reason why it shouldn't if I've done it successfully on different devices. My guess is that some part of the process is being done differently.
TouchNooter's three boots went like this for me:
1st) Infinite loop of nook dots. I reset after about five minutes.
2nd) Complete freeze either on "Rooted Forever" or nook dots screen.
3rd) Success! and boot to Android Welcome. From here I removed the SD and rebooted.

[Q] Best way to root NST No glowlight

This forum is confusing and when I tryed to root my nst with the TOUCHNOOTER,it came out buggy. What is the best way to root the nst on 1.1.2 and does tinynoot work with the nst 1.1.2?
Same question here. After I came home with it and tried to root it with TouchNooter, I made a brick out of it. Successfully unbricked it, but willing to be more carefull nexttime.
It would be nice to make a step by step guide how to root it, possibly with photos/video of these steps. I would like to root mine with support of the gApps, then install Launcher 7, and enable multitouch and NoRefresh. If anybody with time on his hands would do such guide for me, I would be very gratefull.
Tinynoot will work on the NST as well as the Glowworm.
BUT tinynoot does not support the Google app market - it is an extremely minimal approach intended only to get root and install a bare minimum of apps. One of the apps is the Amazon appstore, which may be enough for some folks.
If you want access to the full Google market or to gmail or google maps, you need to use one of the root methods that can make those happen. (Even Tasker was a big PITA to install on my tinynooted device because I had to go hunt down some supporting files that normally come from Google maps to get it to run.)

I successfully rooted it on 1.1.2. I used beta5-2XUFullTouch-PART-1-START and beta5-1 XWUMFTouch-PART-2-END. Opera Mini doesn't not work, but Opera Mobile does. Also Market Search function doesn't work, but you can use AppBrain, or SearchMarket application from Android market.

Cause GB probably won't work.
Try this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1723376
Make sure you have the drivers installed, USB Debugging to On.
After, use root explorer or file manager to set system To RW.
MD
There are other methods like Blackthund3r's root. But this works for me.
Thanks I will try that out

Yeah...I was wondering the same thing...I haven't tried blackthund3rs method yet, but the Simple version didn't work.
Odd thing was it completed, and said it was done...but when I installed Titanium BU, it said no root access. I installed Term Emulator as well, and this confirmed no Root access...yet
I'll give it a try later, but am still searching for a method that works on OTA ICS build # 1.033.00_PA_CUS1
Blackthunder3r's tools are excellent with very good support.. Automated and easy.
I tried the Blackthunder3r's root and it works fine.. now that im rooted im trying to move apps2sd.. anyone able to do this

[Q] Root Nook Simple Touch GlowLight

Hello,
I would like to root a Nook Simple Touch GlowLight. The only reason for doing this is to install Kindle for Android. I have found three particularly popular threads for achieving this:
NookManager
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351
TouchNooter
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343143
GlowNooter
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706
Can you please advise which of these I would be best to follow? Can you also recommend anything else that I must (or should) do following the recommended procedure - Any particular apps or configurations for either optimal enjoyment of Kindle for Android or the usability of the device (regarding refresh, etc).
Thank you.

I have only used two of above for 4 x NST not a NSTG so far.
Now I've literally got two NSTG arrived today waiting at home for me to play with (Just been reduced to £49 in UK so I expect a lot more visitors to this forum asking such questions).
If your new to Nook simple touch devices then please be aware of firmwares. A lot of older more mature stuff for NST relies on the v1.1 firmware base. All new NST and NSTG in UK and other places will already be on v1.2 from factory.
NookManager is newer and supports v2. It has a backup feature. Before anything else boot off it. Backup your NSTG. Connect usb cable to PC while using Nookmanager and copy the backup to a PC.
I would also use Noogie and make another backup a different way.
That way if you screw anything up and or don't like root method you can go back.
Before rooting I strongly recommend registering your stock nook and if your going to stick with version 2 update to latest one following instructions on B&N website.
Touchnooter is a lot older and I tend to use that when I am using a v1 base (you lose some features but can gain a very quick lag free multitouch norefresh NST).
I have never used glownooter. Obviously it sounds more NSTG specific which is a good thing.
Personally I don't know how much the NST and NSTG differ internally. Certainly if you start messing around with different kernels make sure they support NSTG or you may lose the glow ability.
I will be trying the NookManager route first. Highly recommend coolreader app as alternative to BnN reader.
I'll let you know how it goes with mine. I will be using it stock for little while first though.
Oh the kindle app did not work that great when I tried it. If you really want kindle that much is it worth buying one..... Certainly if its not up to your standard then use your backup return nook to stock. Only then de-register device and return it.
If running v2 firmware then rather than norefresh (works best on v1) you would be after fastmode. I would not recommend that for reading ebooks. Scrolling PDFs maybe.
Crispy
Noogie guide for backing up
You can use winimage mention in above guide to stick Nookmanager on a sdcard too.
When booting off Nookmanager say no to wifi, Rescue->Backup, Use rest of space on SD card, create backup.
Obviously make sure your device is well charged and choose a big enough sd card to hold the backup. Its about 300MB compressed. As the backup is stored on a second partiton on the sd card windows won't easily be able to access it. To copy to PC once complete plug a usb cable in while running nookmanager and it will appear as mass storage device. Some of my nook's usb cables were charge only ones (very handy) so if cable is thin and long use a different cable.
Also for others reading the NSTG also comes with the most compact usb charger I've ever seen. Its actually smaller than my samsung one. NST comes with no charger.
Based on this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961835 avoid using glownooter
To get fastmode working I've confirmed v166 kernel works with glowlight.
Thank you for your reply
Perhaps you might be able to help here, too?

The nook glow-light I am trying to root has 1.1.5 firmware. The device got rooted but the market app doesn't work properly in order to download the opera browser (the other one doesn't work either), and the amazon app store keeps telling me: "Please enter a valid email and password" and doesn't let me log in with the same credentials that I use to log in from my pc. The opera app isn't even listed among the handful of apps listed on the Market app. What can the problem be? How can it be fixed? If I can't properly use this old nook model as an e-ink android I will have to return it. The only reason I purchased it was to root it.
If anyone know the fix please explain it to me in simple terms as I am not a great tech savvy.
Thx.

You should definitely return to stock firmware and update to 1.2.1 before anything else. Then, you can re-root and enjoy.
Restoring to stock and re-rooting can be done with the NookManager rooting tool. Updating your software version can be done by following the instructions at B&N.
