I am trying to help my friend. I was going to root his Nexus S 4G for him (I have Nexus S myself and unlocked/rooted a long time ago). Well when I plug his phone in to the computer, nothing happens except for charging. No USB mount, no USB debugging notification, nothing. No response other than the phone starts charging.
Using another computer and another USB cable, I eliminated those as variables. The problem lies in his phone. Is there way anyone knows that I can help him fix this?
If your friend didn't install USB drivers the first time, it may not pop up again.

No, there is no indication the computer sees the phone at all. Tried with phone booted and with phone in bootloader mode.
I would assume his USB connection on the phone was faulty, but it does charge....
Try looking in Settings > About phone > Status
If Battery status says "Charging (AC)" instead of "Charging (USB)" then there might be a problem with the USB connection/cable.
I have a belkin USB cable that does this. I plug in the supplied one and the issue is gone

The cable is not the problem. Thanks though.

Had the same issue.
New cable worked.
The same cable works with other phones!
Well I'd do a "Factory data reset" first. If that still doesn't help then there are 4 things I can think of right now:
Uninstall the USB driver in Windows and try to connect the phone again.
Try to plug the phone in an Ubuntu machine.
If wifi is working then I'll try to put the OTA package on the SD card, and flash that via stock recovery.
The last resort is to boot the phone in Download mode and use Odin to flash the stock ROM image.

Seconded. I bought a cheap charging kit and the cable would charge but would not allow file transfer. Took it back, bought another cable and it's fine.
Either the phone is finicky about cables, or it might just require a particular type (probably USB 2.0).
I had this issue also last week. I tried another cable and it worked fine.
But now I am having issues with my usb ports in general. Now they just stop working every once in a while and I am required to restart my laptop.
Don't know if the two problems are related.
Try different USB ports. Like the ones on the back on your computer.
I've been having the same issue. I went out to Radio Shack and bought a new data cable. So far all ports on my laptop, winXP pro 32bit, and my win7 64bit desktop have not had problems.
I'm thinking that the USB cable supplied by Samsung is crap. I tested them both out on the same machine, same port; the new one worked fine, while the stock cable only gave me adb access.
I had this same exact problem. I kept thinking the phone was going bad or something. I tried the cable that came with my Epic & the one that came with my Moment, both didn't work... for some reason it worked find on a Mac though. So when I gave my mom my Moment when I got the Epic she bought an extra micro-USB cable and I decided to try that one, for some odd reason, that one worked.
Still don't know exactly what was going on but a third-party cable fixed the problem for me.
Hope this helps.

If you have an unlocked bootloader use this tool to lock it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.segv11.bootunlocker
To unroot use the permanent unroot feature in SuperSU.
Order is important since the Bootloader tool requires root.

thanks. i installed the android sdk and java jdk but still have the problem. i believe the problem is with the phone 100%
my nexus always shows that it's charging on AC whenever plugged in. doesn't matter if it even is to AC or USB. the phone shows up as unrecognized device with a bang in the USB section of the device manager. on some computers it doesn't even show up.
i tried on my macbook pro and it doesn't even show up there but in every case, the phone charges.
wondering if there's a switch or toggle somewhere that will turn it on and get it working
i'm going to install a windows xp VM as a last ditch resort and see if it at least shows up there.

That is strange, it should work with the Windows Virtual Machine.
Maybe it is to do with the standalone machine using it in the same time.

Same problem here. USB is not recognized using my Nexus 4 ( it used to be recognized on two PCs, but no longer), but another Nexus 4 connects perfectly. I can only charge a USB rate on chargers that used to charge at ac rate. I've tried everything, and more than mentioned in this thread.

Hi guys,
Seems that I've got the same trouble. Got my N4 (stock ROM, 4.2.2) a couple of weeks ago and everything was ok - connection as MTP, connection for debug and so on. But yesterday I connected it to my PC and found that the device indicates charging but not USB connexion. So I've tried to reboot PC and N4, tried other cables and 2 other PCs (my with Win8, and those with Win7 and Linux Mint if matters). Other devices are ok (Huawei Honor, N7, Milestone2).
The phone just doesn't detect USB connection - in both MTP and PTP. Then I tried to plug in wall charger and connect back again to USB. AND IT WORKED! The phone detected the connection so I was able to mount it and detect with adb. I thought that the problem was solved but when I connected it next time - same ****. This time nothing helps (most likely that there wasn't any casual relationship between wall charger connection and temporary fix...)
What options I've got now? Try to root the device and look into syslog to detect if it's a software issue or disassemble the device and try to find any defects on USB port?
Thank you,
Alex

I got mine to work by using a 2 into 1 usb plug. The kind that comes with portable CD writers. Once I got it working I reflashed stock 422 and the problem is gone. Turns out it was a bad flash from the previous owner.

Thanks for advice. During this day it worked properly twice - the phone just started detecting connection. No obvious reasons for that... I got a new device with stock 422 from amazon and haven't flashed or event rooted it. How do you think, should I try to flash it with official 4.2.2? Now I can say that it's most likely a software issue.

Tried it out - the result is the same. Now I can not even unlock the bootloader to reflash 422... Btw I didn't managed to find a 2into1 cable but checked if the same trick would work with USB hub with external power - it works really better. The device can detect the connection almost all the times and I can see it listed in adb devices and as a mounted storage. Though in fastboot mode this doesn't help. Device remains unrecognized.

well if you're getting a connection to the computer but not in fastboot, your drivers might just need removal/reinstallation.
once you get it going, reflash the stock 4.2.2 from google and see how it goes.
if that doesn't work and you can get it going, get it replaced by Google.
if you can, try it on a mac.. they don't need the drivers installed. just run it all from terminal.
Okay, I've managed to track down the issue...
Once I got it available for fastboot I've unlocked bootloader and then flashed with Cyanogen. The problem remained but I could get dmesg output for plug-in event. I've managed to get logs for problematic case (doesn't detect USB data connexion) and for correct behavior case (when Android detects USB data connection).
No sense to put the whole log pieces here just a brief quotes.
For correct case:
Code:
Avail curr from USB = 500
For incorrect case:
Code:
Avail curr from USB = 1500
USB module firmware tells the system that it has detected data-connection and enabled low-power mode (500mA). In this case Android initiates mtp and adb:
Code:
<6>[62539.001178] adb_open
<6>[62539.001269] mtp_bind_config
<6>[62539.001422] adb_bind_config
And in problematic case USB module firmware incorrectly indicates for the OS that there are only power-connection (5V/ground). I cant say exactly where the issue is but there are only two options - bug in USB module firmware or physical fault of connection (pins, bus or whatever else). Anyway I've to replace USB module or just go with it and use adb over network (the matter is that sending the device back to Amazon seller from my country would cost me 1/3 of the purchase total so I consider that just unreasonable).
Thanks to LG - for my money I got not only a box with device but also whole lotta fun =)

It so sounds like a cheap cable..or a defective one.
I'd try a different cable/USB Port or uninstalling the drivers then plugging the phone back in and let it re-install upon reconnecting.

Yes and both try with MTP PTP nothing, even the phone does not recognize when you connect the cable from the pc, but works as a charger.
Where did you get the part? It's probably a copy or defective.

no, the original broke and stopped working
Finally solved
Finally after searching and researching I found that it was a software compatibility problem, so I found the Franco kernel (ziddey-otg-R193-JSS-CM-10262031) having the all drivers that needs for the phone to recognize the USB, now works properly with the PC and everything else.
So we know what is the problem with those new USB flex cables
I hope this will help others with same issue.
Hello sir,
I have a nexus 4 stock unlocked and android 4.4.2 KOT4H i have a issue that my phone is connected for charging on pc but doesn't show up as mtp adb or even fastboot , however it connected for sometime during the day and when i rebooted it ..!! It was just charging and again no adb fastboot or mtp! Please help me solve the issue
Most likely issues would be either drivers, USB cable or USB port. Try a different PC, try to reinstall drivers, try another cable, check to see if any physical damage to USB. Maybe test to see if adb over WiFi works ad well to help narrow down the issue

I have the same problem often too. What I do to fix it ranges from so many things. Some times a simple reboot helps (PC and phone) sometimes a different PC helps. Sometimes switching to PTP instead of MTP helps adb. Sometimes its the driver. Use a universal adb driver. Or use nexus 4 drivers. Or sometimes it's the SDK. Redownload the SDK and install the Google USB driver things. I have never got wireless adb working so you can try it. Sometime switching to USB 2.0 or 3.0 helps. Or switching to the ones on the front of my case helps, Even though I have a good motherboard. Try using adb in recovery.
Oh and last thing. It might be your custom kernel/rom (if your running one). Or USB fast charge is on. Just a possibility. Hope this helps.

I doubt it, could be though. Thank god the USB port on the nexus 4 is easily replaceable. In this situation, go download a toolkit (I know, they are bad), and install the adb drivers from there. And try doing some adb/fastboot commands in he toolkit. Also try relocking/unlocking the Bootloader/rooting because that involves fast boot and adb commands. Last thing I would do is try a different PC. Even if all your phones work on the PC your using right now.
