Screen Is Black When Booting Sometimes - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else experienced this? After I rooted my wife's phone (used the pinned rooting and s-off guide), the phone will sometimes boot with a black screen. I mean, I can tell the screen is on, but it is black. Eventually, or sometimes not, it will come back on after it goes to sleep, but I just thought this was weird. Could something in the root process or recovery install cause this?

Try putting a boot animation in there, it might have been deleted in the root process.

After perma root phone won't shut down completely.

After getting perma root and installing Bacon bits 0.3, when I want to turn my phone off completely it instead just boots back up into the recovery. Does anyone else have this problem or have any ideas how to resolve it?

I have no idea, but noticed it too...

I am apparently having this problem as well now. I never noticed it before and even after a battery pull my phone seems to boot back into recovery. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
One thing to note is that you need to make sure that you don't have it plugged in and charging. It's known to boot on its own when you do that. I'm not sure if that is a bugged feature or not, but I also have Bacon Bits installed and can shut down fine.
Although, my phone stays on all the time.

Ok just tried to turn off my phone with it unplugged and it did not turn on to recovery. So kind of a boo bug for now but I am sure that it will get worked out.
Heh... I'm guessing you all have Clockwork Recovery installed? That's the problem. At least, when I switched to the test keys recovery, it wouldn't constantly start back up with any power regardless of how I shut down.
hmm..i have baconbits installed and dont have this problem. ill look into it

Problems booting

Since this morning, when I boot it will get stuck on that red eye screen. I've waited several minutes and it won't go on.
So I end up pulling the battery and usually that works. Sometimes I have to do this twice.
Not sure how to even diagnose this.

Are you rooted or completely stock?

Rooted. I just tried restoring a backup from 3 days ago and had the same problem. So I restored back to the latest. When it finally does boot, it seems to run great.
I have a backup from further back, just not sure it will make a difference. Might give that so shot too.
I really think it is booting all the way, and just doesn't stop displaying the boot animation.
The reason I think that is because at some point the power button makes the screen go on and off, and there is haptic feedback in the same places where my lock screen tabs are.
At any rate, and this sounds unbelievable, but I pulled the sd card out and it booted normally. I put the card back in, and now it seems to boot normally. Can't explain it.

My damn phone doesn't want to turn off while charging.

I just finished uninstalling everything on this phone thinking it was an app doing this. Tonight is the first I've noticed this.
Here's the scenario. Phone is on and plugged into charger in car. I have root and recovery. No problems with those installs. I try to shut off the phone and it goes like it did, then a few seconds after the charge light comes on when the phone is off, it boots into recovery by itself. I pulled the battery and no change. I turn the phone off while unplugged and it stays off. Keeping the phone off, I plug it into the charger and recovery boots up. This is the strangest friggin thing I've ever seen!
I'm going to ruu it when I get home shortly. I will see if it does it then. If okay then I will root it and see if it does it. If not then I will install recovery and see if it does it. I don't think it was doing this with root only but I will see when I get home.
If it turns out to be recovery, I can live without it for a while until a newer version comes out. I prefer rooted stock anyways. Anyone seen this? I doubt it.

Others were talking about having this issue, so it could very well be a preliminary issue with root on the shift

This is a known issue with CW recovery. I am thinking about learning how to make a recovery for us, as this really bothers me.

I am working on it, but since I know no java, it will take some time.
Finally got mine rooted today, ran into some weird issues, but haven't experienced this issue. I did run into some issues with it plugged in an booting the phone. It wouldn't boot when power was pressed. Charge light would also stay on after it was unplugged. Battery pull resolved my issue. Not the same I know but kinda quirky

[INFO] Random Reboots aren't True Reboots

I think many of you are misinterpreting the "Random Reboots" you're experiencing. Unless the screen goes completely blank, then it is not a true reboot, if all it does is flash back to boot animation it is just the graphical shell crashing.
Good point, I did notice that it booted up significantly faster than a full reboot when it happened to me before and that it only dropped to the boot animation.
That makes a lot of sense actually

Thanks for the suggestion - that does make some sense. Is there a way to verify this, though? In my case, my DInc will be in a stand on my desk - screen off, so I can't actually see what happens - when I'll hear it vibrate, and I'll notice the white HTC screen followed by the boot animation. It's only done this since I rooted, and it has done it with at least three of the ROMs I've used.

Yeah, same deal. I have learned to do "real" reboots, especially after rooting. What I mean is actually turning it off, counting to like 20 (maybe pull the battery), and then turn it back on.
Recently I had an issue with the capacitive buttons not lighting up at all so I tried a "quick" reboot (the kind that requires root) and it did nothing, then I tried a "real" reboot and they work fine now.
Agreed. I can confirm the Atrix is not doing a full reboot. I had a call on speaker phone then all of a sudden my screen showed the boot animation and I could hear the other person talking for an additional 15-20 sec while the phone finished "booting". Our conversation was not ended until the home screen came back up, at this point my bars/service dropped to no service. Also, I have not rooted or modified the Atrix, its stock.. w/LauncherPro+.

I had those "reboots" twice now. Once while using Maps and once while sitting on my desk not being used. I was also using LauncherPro+. I wonder if that might have been part of it. I stopped using LP+ and haven't had a "reboot" yet (knock on wood)

[Q] Random Restarts?

Over the past few days I have noticed that my D800 will randomly restart. It does it in this way every time...I will go to unlock the phone by double tapping and the front LED will turn white as it is supposed to, then it will just hang there with a black screen until the ATT logo shows again and it boots back into my lock screen. Why is this happening? Has it happened to anyone else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Opps i just started a topic on this. I have sprint g2 and i was suffering the same issues. I dont know what i did to fix it. But it seems fine now.

hello, I experienced the same trouble last week. I remove Gmail (as it was proposed in an other thread) and reinstall it. Since then, no more reboot . It seems that one update of Gmail is creating some trouble.
cross the fingers it does not appear again ;0)
