So yesterday I was recording my friend's graduation, and I was using my Epic. I never had a problem with recording before, and I had taken several videos earlier in the day. Finally after she walks across the stage and sits back down, I'm ready to stop recording. But somebody said something to me and I got distracted and instead of pressing the Stop or Pause buttons on the screen, I pressed the Back button below the screen. Oh well, no problem, I thought. Surely it would still save the video. NOPE!
The video was not in the gallery and I could not find a temporary file anywhere with the right size and timestamp using the file manager. The temporary cached file had to be on the SD card somewhere, because there was not enough RAM or internal flash memory in the phone to store the recording. So I pulled the battery to prevent any further writes to the SD card so I could do some more forensics when I got home.
At home, I found the deleted file on the SD card using TestDisk. It was named temp_video and was in the folder /DCIM/Camera. The timestamp was right, and the file size was 48mb. Sure enough, the headers showed it was a 3gpp encoded video in an mp4 container, just like the rest of the videos recorded on the phone. But no player would play it and no video fixer program would fix it. Apparently the phone has to write a very critical header to END of the file (guess that makes it a footer) when it finishes recording. The MP4 container is extremely sensitive to any missing data and the entire video is basically unrecoverable if the footer data is not written. I did try hacking up the file with a hex editor and copying headers from a good file. I learned all about MP4 file structure but I could still never get anything useful out of it.
So I learned a couple of lessons from this little incident. In conclusion:
Don't EVER EVER EVER press Back instead of Stop when recording a video. The software will helpfully delete the video you have been recording.
Mp4 files are trash. Why do they have to be so ridiculously sensitive to missing data? (put the critical headers at the BEGINNING of the file, for %^&'s sake!!) Why can't the phone record in any other format? I might run out of battery suddenly, or an app might crash, and the same thing would happen.
I believe the app that does the actual recording on the Epic is called CoolIris. I'm not sure if this app is specific to Samsung phones, or if all Android phones use it. I will be looking for alternatives now that can record .mpg or .avi or anything else.
Thanks for the very informative post. Only recently did I have a generic recording failure issue from different conditions, but this will be a good one to remember also. Really the camera app should have some kind of failsafe dialogue box to help prevent this issue at the very least.
Thanks for the heads up I don't use the recording feature regularly, but definitely will avoid this. Sorry your couldn't recover your friend's graduation :*(
Pausing without stoping won't save either. Found that out the hard way

I did do some recordings in 1280x720 yesterday. The first couple of videos worked OK, but when I tried to do a longer recording it would go about 10 seconds and then a message would pop up saying "The recording failed". Maybe the write speed to the SD card is too slow and can't keep up?

It's OK, my wife was sitting beside me recording with her EVO 3D. Unfortunately it was blurry because the lens cover on her otterbox was smudged, and she was not holding it very steadily. I know I had a great video and I was mad at myself the rest of the day b/c I lost it. I guess we will end up paying the professional photographer for the "official" stuff anyway..

I'm trying to figure out if thats a rom issue or if it happens on stock as well.
I use to have the recording failed message all the damn time on stock ec05, since moving to srf 1.2 no issues recording. I'm running clean kernel at stock speed /voltage.

Stock eg22. It has happened from time to time since the eclair days. Tried reformatting sd card. I think the one that comes with the phone just sucks.

Hey guys I need your help,
Up until today I had this app was working fine, the only thing that I installed today and also uninstalled is coreplayer. Now the pic for the vids will not show up when I search for vids or have vids saved. Here's a screen shot...
Does anyone know how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hmmm.. Having the same problem, but didn't know if Coreplayer was the problem. Anyone have any ideas?
Same Problem to me!
Yesterday i noticed that i have the same Problem.
(Only installed SPB3, but don't think that's the Problem)
yes i installed spb3 also and removed it i just did hard reset and did full back up and still have the same problem
Im having the same isue. Seems rather sudden. Also, im getting the feeling that the app isnt enabling all videos to be displayed. For instance when im looking for a certain music video that i would easily find on the youtube website isnt found on the app.
Videos will still play but the thumbnail pics wont show up, but in my saved videos tab pics show up prior to 2 days ago. Meaning the videos I saved a while ago shows up but if i try to save a new video the pic wont show up. How odd huh?
Same thing here.
I think this happened after i installed core player, not sure thought...
I'm thinking that this is actually a Youtube issue as I certainly didn't have this issue previously. Especially if it's happening after HR.

I just thought after Iinstalled coreplayer and sbp 3.0 it change some registry and couldnt change it even after hard reset. But I found something when searching for vids the thumbnail pics will not show up but if I click on the "i" icon to the right the picture will show up. There must be a fix and are you having the same problem?
I think its about time we get together to make our own youtube app. Im also kind of upset that im not recieveing the full video list. It seems like the videos i look for and know are on youtube arnt displayed on the app for some reason.
So anyone find a fix for this?
I believe that YouTube App shows only the videos which are available in High Quality and not Standard Quality as our PC does. That's why video lags too...
nobody has a fix for this?

I read somewhere it's cause by changes in youtube side and it affect HTC Youtube App v3. Older version (v2?) does work but you lose landscape view of the apps.
we're supposed to have the top of the line google phone, yet my gallery takes foreever to open and lags all the time. its so damn frustrating to have to wait for like 20 seconds just to view a picture i just took. it worked just fine before the 3.2.2 update. it seems like the phone is getting worse with each update instead of better. GOOGLE fix the **** that we need to work instead of other stupid things that no one can use right now
i switched to quickpic https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder and never looked back. superfast and displays the picture with more detail whenyou zoom in.
I agree with quickpic. I made the mistake of removing gallery, only to find out later other programs needed it for some function other than displaying pictures.
yeah the 3d gallery is a fail imo. luckily there is quickpic. havent had any problems yet w/o gallery3d.apk

I think I had some error when trying to send a pic or video or sound recording with stock messaging. I'm guessing it uses it to convert SMS to mms.
I don't know if it can be done but it would be nice to have a setting to change file associations with. More than what can be done now.
What a fail this has happened plenty of time on plenty of awesome recorded videos. I hate this problem

Motorola needs to fix it , it's a big problem what if my child was being born in would never have that moment back or video of such a great moment I thought they would have fixed this by now

Agreed. It's happened to me a couple times.
Just make sure you don't exit the video application until you have STOPPED the video.
The problem is the header isn't written until the recording process is stopped.
And thus...corrupts the video.
I've tried multiple techniques to get an especially important video recovered (phone died while recording).
One was to swap the header with a hex edit from a working video...
Another technique was to split the video into pieces with some program and again use a working video and swap the header piece...
And I remember trying something else too...idk.
Either way, nothing worked.

The temp video files must be saved somewhere does anyone know where?
nobodyAtall's MiniCM7 2.2.0
Using the native Camera app...
The video recording crashes then it will show blank white when the recording reaches EXACTLY at 10 minutes making the whole recording corrupted.
Is there any fix in this issue? Or recommend other ROM...
I also need confirmation about this.
Thanks in advance.

Igcamera has the same error too.
PrimeHD 8.0 camera doesn't work either. Probably CM7 bug.
Is there any way to tweak Media Profiles?

Well, you can tweak media profiles, but with lgCamera you can change various settings right in the app. I remember having white screen and error, while I was on PrimeHD 6.0 and using h.264 encoder. But the white screen was there right from the begining of recording. So it is not a general cm7 bug, with h.263 there wasn't an error, there is maybe some problem with your phone. Try lgCamera with h.263 and see what happens.
If there is still the error, try fullwipe. BTW, what kernel are you on?
Oh, and what about sd card? 10 minutes is quite a lot, maybe it is running out of capacity?

IgCamera with h263 doesn't work at all... I have done Full Wipe too, SD card is not running out but pretty slow Class 2.
Isn't it weird that the camera crashes exactly at 10 minutes?
I can't still report to the developers...

The SD card is pretty slow, in my opinion, but it is strange, that the error appears after 10 minutes...dunno. I recorded a longer video, cca 12 minutes, there were few glitches and sync problems, but no white screen. I have class 6 card.
Try to revert to stock rom, stock kernel...I can't figure out, how to help you anymore, sorry
i suggest PetrukDroid v3....install rom then flash Gapps-PetrukDroid set up your account and then flash another gapps cuz with PetrukDroid gapps video recording will be LAGGY...
Anyone? Is there any fix for this?
... Please confirm the error.

Questions should be posted in Q&A section.
I've noticed an issue lately and I'm not sure what is causing it....
But when I go to start recording video, I press the Record button and it doesn't record right away... it takes anywhere from 3-5 seconds before the 00:00 timer starts moving up and actually recording. Does anyone know what could be causing this delay in recording? I have tons of free space on the memory card(that it's set to record to) and can't think of anything that would be causing this. Thoughts?

Open camera and go into settings and make sure timer is off. If it is off all you can really do is go into settings/apps and clear all the camera settings to default and reboot.

Yeah timer is off. It's not similar to a timer issue as much as it is like an "accessing hard drive, please wait" sort of issue. The screen lags before starting and when it finally unlags, it starts recording. I've rebooted numerous times, no help.

Class 10 200GB Samsung SD Card. Video set to FHD. I just checked settings and didn't realize there were so many better resolution options than what I was recording... where the heck did all of these come from? Lol

I believe all those settings came with MM camera software lol. Aside from clearing the apps settings and data I'm not really sure what the deal is, factory reset would probably take care of it but nobody really wants to do that unless they really have to.

You might try unmounting the SD card, then remounting it. If it started after the nougat update it could be a squirly setting...
Maybe reformat it also?
