Could use some help - Droid 2 General

Hello, new to the Droid 2 but not Android phones (currently have a Droid Charge). So, I ordered the D2 for my mom. I've been trying to root it using the one click method I found here. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but it keeps failing to root. I have it in debugging mode. PC recognizes phone and starts doing its thing. It always errors out around su part saying it can't find su or something like that. Bottom line is that it's erroring out and not completing the root process. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try using Z4Root (in the market). It's what I used.

For some reason, it's not showing up in the market for me.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk

Then try finding the apk online somewhere. Or try clearing the cache for the market and look again.

Thanks. Found it. Tried it. The phone is still not rooted. Z4 didn't work either. I click on permanent root. It looks like it's doing its thing and then just closes. The program closes on its own. Don't get it. This phone is being stubborn.

You sure you are not rooted, because it sounds like Z4 did it's job. Do you have SDK and ADB set up? You can use that to check if you are rooted. Also see if you have Clockworkmod installed. That's a good indicator that you are rooted.
If all else fails, you might have to sbf it, then try again.

Yeah, not rooted still. Z4 and Easy method continue to fail. Not sure what the issue is. It's never been this difficult for me to root a phone before. Perplexed here.

That's interesting seeing as I rooted mine real quick using Z4 and ADB. Then used Droid 2 Bootstrap to install CWM. Then used ROM Manager to update CWM. It's really not that hard to root the D2. I really do't know why you are having problems. Like I said, SBF it and try to root again.

Whew! Finally got it done...had to do it the old fashioned way through adb.

Lol SBF means to get the SBF file for your phone and flash it. It would reset your system back to stock settings. Then you can redo what you were trying to do, but from a clean, stable set up.
Glad to hear it. ADB is a life saver and should be a required knowledge when rooting/ROMing. Good luck!

Thanks, hadn't heard that terminology before. It's called something else with Samsung Androids so used to that terminology.
Thanks for the help. I agree, ADB is quite useful and should be used by all.

Lol It's called RUUing with HTC androids. The companies have to make it hard for us.
No problem. And just so you know, when I rerooted my spare D2 using Z4root, the app and the phone turned off toward the end of the process and it was indeed rooted. It's just how Z4root does things (it did the same with my main D2 also). I checked with ADB to be sure. For future reference.

Interesting. My phone never turned off though. Z4 just quit. I know it didn't work because Rom Manager, Superuser app, and Busybox installer didn't work. It wasn't until I pushed them to system/bin and installed Busybox through adb that the phone would root. Go figure!

Ah.....I'm guessing if the phone turns off that means it worked.
That is weird. Lol at least you got to shake the ADB cobwebs off.

Cant root after Flashing New SBF...

I installed the new 2.2.320 sbf from TBH, just to start fresh. I have now tried 6 different programs to root my phone. None of them are working...Is anyone else having this issue? And if you got it working, what steps did you take to fix it? Thanks in advance
Use z4root. Had The same problem. This is a one click root application.
Yup, same problem here too. I was actually going to ask if anyone has the z4 root app because it disappeared from the market. It was the only thing that worked the first time I flashed the new SBF.
ya, after flashing the new SBF, had to manually install Z4 as it wasnt in the market. Also it seems as if the D2 method wasnt working properly.
Thanks for the help everyone...

YEs it works. That was the point of this thread. lol
I had to wipe data to get z4 to work. I don't know why but if I downloaded all my apps again and set everything up it wouldn't work.
Put your phone in airplane mode, reboot, run z4root, let it reboot you phone. Once it powers on take it out of airplane mode and you should be rooted.

Rooting through ADB works... z4root is much easier of course.
The .340 OTA installed on my phone today. Lost root.
I tried the DarkOnion batch file (DoRootWin_2.1.4) several times and could not get it to run to completion.
As mentioned, Z4 (in airplane mode) worked fine.
I tried this...my phone is telling me it cannot down the file because the file type is not suported by my phone. What am I missing? Thank you!!!
I too am having issues with rooting after the ota update. I initally was rooted using the rootmyx2 one click gui from sli3ntki11 and did the update, now nothing will give me root access, I tried z4, rootmyx2 (again), and tried the doroot.bat method through the android sdk install. Kinda at a loss. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

So I believe I figured it out. I have two existing superuser.apk in my system/app folder. This from what I read in some other posts is confusing z4 ( go figure smart enough to root but not to overwrite, lol) but the directory is read only. The other post gave a link to the steps to access it but the page was not found. Can anyone give me the steps to take to gain access to the directly and make it read/write so I can remove those two rogue files and get rooted?

z4root not supported on my droid X
hi,
i updated my Droid X to the latest version. 2.3.340. and downloaded the z4root through my phone from the link here and i get an error message that the file is not supported on this phone. please help i am new to this and still don't fully understand all of the terms. i tried to download the z4root 1.2 from 4shared.com but the phone hangs and nothing happens. any type of help will be appreciated, thanks.
did you sucessfully install it or did you get the error while trying to install it. you will have to download the apps installer from the market and use it to install the z4root.apk from your sd card.

Just use the one click root for droid 2 and be done with it.
ive tried rerooting but i just cant get fix_permissions to run on terminal emulator im only able to run fix permissions via rom manager
With a new device (especially a bootloader locked one like the Droid 2, Droid 2 Global and Droid X.) It's always best to learn how things are done with the new device because they've changed a lot of stuff when they put these out and because of those changes we've had to do a lot of little work arounds to get what we want out of this device. In the beginning we didn't even think we'd get root!

Right. You're not going to be able to root your D2 in the same way as you did the G1. Just check the stickies and follow the directions specific to the D2.
Tried every single method of rooting still no luck Fix_Permissions isnt able to run on terminal dont know if its just me can someone please help

rooting can be finicky sometimes. Back when we only had one way of doing it (manually) you just had to keep running the exploit until it kicked back to the terminal. Try running consecutively two or three times in a row then reboot then try it two or three times again. It just takes a little time. And the best way to fix permissions is to get koush's bootstrap (after root of course) and go into recovery and it's in the advanced menu. Hope this helps.
Still no luck, does it matter that im stll on stock and not a custom rom?

Search for z4root in the market. Easiest way to root IMO.

You can't get to a custom ROM until you get root access so it doesn't matter.
Here's a link to the post about the z4root program: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
What is fix_permissions? I have rooted and unrooted my D2 a hundred times and never used/heard of it. The closest thing I can relate it to is the "chmod" command.

That's bacisally it it's just the fix permissons does it automitically to what the permissions should be in each folder I think.
If you go into to clockwork and into the advanced menu you'll find it.

z4root not working

i have been reading the noob root guide and have a problem. with 2.10 hboot installed, when i log in to shell, command for super user i get permission denied.the phone never showed anything on the screen. titanium backup shows not rooted.so at this point i think z4 root is not working.any ideas?
Did you take the 3.70 OTA update?
Last I checked, z4 doesn't work on the evo. There are other methods that work for the evo.

i hav been fallowing the noob root guide.
Well there you have it. It seems 3.70 patches the exploit that z4root was using to get access to root. AFAIK, there are no new exploits that can be used for root access on 3.70 so you'll have to wait.
you need to hit TEMPORARY root on z4root. make sure you are using the 1.3.0 version of z4root, because none of the earlier ones have temporary root. the temp root feature definitely works on evo. it is just a few simple lines of coding. not too difficult for an app.

did you ever figure out your radios? I figured out my issues with bad 4g.. I had to deroot my phone then reroot. So from day one I had 4g, I rooted and didnt check on sprint lovers rom if I had 4g. then I flashed fresh and didnt check until later and noticed no 4g... so then I flashed myns and nope.. but Istill had my RSAs and MACs...
so then I derooted and then rerooted. 4g from stock, 4g after root, 4g on sprint lovers and 4g on myns.

ruu is a program for pc that flashes over most partitions with the stock sprint unrooted rom. it is ALMOST the whole process of unrooting and is considered 'starting over'. google is your friend on these sort of things.

I am on 3.70, and like the Hulk have had issues getting z4root to work. After about 15 attempts, reinstalling the program, clearing data, etc. I got the program to work one time and did a Titanium backup of a few apps. Since then, I have been unable to get it to work again. Something in the process also rendered several of the apps that I moved to the SD card inoperable. I imagine a factory reset or RUU might do the trick, but I haven't taken those steps yet.

Droid 2 bootstrap not working

HI, just rooted yesterday for first time. Bought koucsh bootstrap. When I hit bootstrap recovery it says failure. What am I doing wrong. Does any setting need to be enabled? Thanks
Your sure the root worked? Do you have the superuser app and did the bootstrap ask for su permission?

Having the same issue. I did a 1 click root a LONG time ago and I am now trying to load a custom rom, but after I downloaded bootstrap, it doesn't launch into recovery. SU is on the phone but does not ask for permission when I click bootstrap recovery. I've tried to steps to re-root the phone, unroot the phone, and nothing is successful. Did a hard reset, still nothing. Anyone know what could be wrong? Thanks

Atrix shows Superuser app but is not rooted

I have an AT&T Atrix on the 1.5.7 firmware. I do have all drivers installed, USB debugging enabled, and am using Windows 7 (dual booted on a macbook 2011).
I believe my problem is that I originally rooted it on the old firmware and then i installed the 1.5.7 OTA update. I now have the Superuser app on my phone but it does not give anything root permission. I've attempted to root again via Superoneclick but it gets hung right after pushing pneuter or gingerbreak to the phone. I have also tried unrooting but that gets hung up as well.
Can anyone give me some things to try or even walk me through something?
Thanks so much!
search the dev forum for gladroot as to why it doesn't work...
and you can try to re-root using gingerbreak, which is also in the dev forum.
basically updating without following the proper steps will not keep your root. and also.
NEVER USE SUPERONECLICK!
spend some time in the dev forums. you'll learn a lot.
Thanks! I'll look into the gladroot issue.
I have tried Gingerbreak but when I run the program with my phone connected, the spinning loading cursor displays for a second then nothing happens. I've ran as administrator but that doesn't do anything different.
It's worth noting, on 1.8.4 Gingerbreak 1.2 worked fine. I know recovery wasn't playing nice unless plugged in. That could also help. Obviously it won't hurt.

Update to 1.83 and use gingerbreak. You'll need an external SD card though. It works great.
Not sure if this is the place to put this, but I'm having a similar problem, even if I got here differently.
I tried superoneclick, and I tried gladroot. In each case, the program seemed to run successfully, did everything I expected from the directions, no error messages. Claimed success at the end of the run. The superuser app is installed, but no apps are listed. When I try to run an app that needs root, like Root Explorer, it just complains that my phone isn't rooted.
I used the directions and downloads here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016060
Build number was OLYLA_U4_0.37.4
My phone is on Bell, so I used the Bell directions. Anyone else have or overcome this problem?
i am rooted, all root apps work.
my problem is android commander says am not rooted (windows xp)
and adb dont work
any solution?
Use gingerbreak and report back
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
So I tried doing the webtop hack anyway, and when I got to this step:
Code:
adb shell
su
my phone prompted me to allow root access. Finished the process and it's working fine. Ran Root Explorer, it asked for permission, and now it works fine, too.
Maybe doing something as explicit as 'su' in adp shell was the kick in the pants it needed. Either way it's working now...
I thought maybe I'd added superuser to auto-end list, for whatever reason, but when I checked it wasn't there...
