WP7 Day to Day Usage - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Just wondering with all the reported issues with WP7 on the Leo, how do you find it for your day to day usage? Is it tolerable. Are aspects totally unusable or are the issues mostly what you consider minor?
All in all the real question is... Is it worth it?
Ephumuris

In terms of functionality, i think that wm6.5 energy rom has been my ffavourite since youve got maps and facebook and applications load up without any issues.
For simplicity and ease of use i would definately say WP7 is better. Much better applications (when they work). and games are very good. Overall experience is veery smooth and sleek compared to wm6.5. I definately think it was worth upgrading.

Any issues though? You don't have issues with sound or touchscreen etc?
Ephumuris

i use mango update on my hd2.its fast smoth and very cool, but batery life is very poor(12h with push mail).
Only sound quality is very poor, poor is also a ringing.everything else is good.

Multitouch is not great. Only registers fingertips placed on the screen exactly the same time. Sometimes pinch to zoom can be very frustrating.

I'd think sound quality being poor would be a deal breaker?

HD2 Video camera lagging

Does any of you experience lag, when capturing video and panning around .. The stream is lagging a short moment.
It can also be seen when playback the film.
I have at Sandisk class 6 and have tested it in a cardreader to 18/24 mb/sec, but in the phone to 4/4 mb/sec.
Lagging would be not that bad, but there is strong 'jello' effect. Camera is definitely a let-down, compared to my previous X1. On the other hand, camera was about only thing done right on X1

I hated the X1 like hell, and the camera was simply crap. BRRRRR, my worst phone ever.
Most of the problems dealing with lag is most probably due to how many programs you have running in the background. If you're RAM is clogged up running apps which you don't need running then make sure you clear them in the task manager.
I'm using my HD2 typing this message and the keyboard is brilliant. I really don't know what people are complaining about. I'm finding it as good if not better than the one on the iPhone. Just one thing, if you allow the screen to get greasey then no doubt you will struggle, so keep that screen clean!

Jep, I think it's better than the one on Iphone, but I think that it's a cam driver problem...but i don't know..!
It was not a complaint, it was at question to other and maybe a way to remove the lag..!I have no grease on the screen

[Q] what are the limits of the wildfire?

im trying to decide between the wildfire and desire.
without going too into things, the wildfire has it's drawbacks (screensize, processing power), but it alot more affordable than the desire. that said, desire has the big screen and more raw power.
so to help me decide which i should go for, could you guys clarify some usability questions i have:
- a key feature (one of many!) on my current touchHD WM handset is the ability for handwriting notes. alot quicker to write down letters/number combinations (useful being in IT!). is the wildfire capable of reasonably handing fingerwriting?
- does anyone use igo/tomtom - i presume the wildfire is more than capable, i just want to be 100% sure.
- does wildfire lag/pause/freeze? one of the biggest issues i have with my TouchHD is wm6.1 lags, and wm6.5 is just a touch slow in general. this is one of the main factors of considering desire over wildfire.
- aside from the physical/hardware attributes of the wildfire, i cant see any real advantage of the desire over a wildfire.
- keyboard. is the wildfire capable of full QWERTY keyboard accurate typing, or is it a 'compressed' keyboard where QW is on 1 button, ER on the next, TY on the next and so on...
i'm sure i've missed something, but i can always ask that when i remember it
thanks for info guys!
It is quite slow mate. I am not using custom roms and with Android 2,1 its a bit slow.
Every now and then you have to deal with freezes.
Furthermore depending on your fingers handwriting in portrait mode can be a pain ...
This is the big trade off, what u sacrifice for the attractive price. If u can afford desire, and if a cell phone is more to u than a simple phone ,then u should go for desire.
Finally the arrival of desire hd with push down original desire's price

thanks for that.
freezing and battery life are the 2 concerns i have.
freezing seems an issue on the wildfire (my concerns, and your experience), although appears to have slightly better battery life.
desire will no doubt need charging every other day but shouldnt suffer from freezing.
ebay has a few at a reasonable price, so i'm very tempted to go grab the desire sim-free.
edit: i might hold out actually, see what peoples experiences are with 2.2. i know 2.2 have a load of speed improvements so may fix the freezing on wildfire. decent handwriting would be a nice feature, but certainly not worth the premium... if handwriting isnt good enough on wildfire then i'll just use voice/keyboard entry.

My 5 copper: Freezing , none. It happens very rarely and when it does , it's me messing it up with custom frameworks and other crap.
Battery time. Right now i have 36hours uptime , about an hour calltime , about 2 hours surfing/marketbrowsing. Half an hour Angry birds and an hour or two of Spotify (offline). When i am not at home i have Wifi off and while on work , i only have 2g enabled.
Speedwise , you can't compare the speed with a Desire ofcourse. but it's much better in 2.2 , and with OC and the tweaks in CM6 it's very tolerable in my opinion. IS the desire worth it's money? , probably. I can only imagine how much better a Desire would be with a tweaked and OC'd rom. Only tried a Desire with original Rom.
I think Tomtom doesn't have version for android and I know igo works on wildfire, but there is no fully working version for 320x240. Version for 320x240 has some problems with icons and text placing out of screen etc.
Use Navigon or Sygic mobile maps for navigation on Wildfire.
Co pilot live works mint on my wildfire, not had any freezes using openfire 2.3, text imput, i use better keyboard and dont have any problems, i have quite big hands too, speed is not a problem and seeing as argos has wildfires for £130, very good price

Why does the Evo have screen lag?

I noticed that the Evo has a touch sensitive lag that is more apparent than any other device. A lot of noobs here thought it was due to the FPS but obviously it wasn't. I can figure it out myself because logically, screen size does not change how heat is transfered between the screen. I'm really curious what exactly it is.... notice how on the iPhone/iPad/iTouch there is zero to no lag in touch display and movement which is what makes gaming on Apple so wicked. The Evo is by far the worst device for this.... Its not a deal breaker by any means, but it is very noticeable when switching between an Apple product and the Evo.
Anyone got any theories as to what it may be? The lag is definitely there but nobody is really talking about it. There MUST be a fix - and NO its not putting custom rom like CM6 on it... its not a rom issue.
I really hope that in future devices Android phone makers will focus on reducing lag times. If there is any apparent gap between iOS and Android besides that app market it would be the lag issue. The reason I even thought of this was when reading a gaming thread earlier today - made me curious...
Oh I totally agree! Just spent 30 mins on 1 level of angry birds trying to be precise and ugh....I'm still trying to calm down.....damn frustration. I've never really spent more than 5 mins with an apple phone so I can't compare. But I could totally tell the lag. But really I've only actually noticed it a couple of times so I dunno what's up

Well of course you're right...
Though I have seen the lag disappear with the addition of Kingx BFS11 kernel. So technically it's not a rom, but a kernel has fixed it for me.

Well, my EVO is pretty responsive, scrolling and pressing things is super responsive.
Kinda weird, but I open the App menu and just scroll through the apps list up and down, kinda weird but it's just fascinates me sometimes .
Maybe you have too much processes going on?
I'm using EvIo Caulkin ROM
Yeah, this problem was a big letdown for me... like you said, not a deal breaker, but very annoying. It just seems to be tiny things that they overlooked. But it appears not so tiny when a lot of other people notice the issue as well.

Weird. I'm using 100% stock Evo and I also have used an iPhone extensively, and I don't notice any difference to be totally honest... the complete opposite in fact. I've always concluded the Evo was one of the best.
I'm just an average user, maybe I'm not trained enough to notice lol.

I only notice it with Sense UI... Other phones like the Epic or whatever, seem to have less of a lag with touch. The minute I install an AOSP ROM, it's butter smooth and more responsive.
And it's not a ROM issue, just a Sense issue.
DC 3.6 and net's 4.2.1 bfs. Responsive as hell. Though, before the fps fixes, lag and studder were very apparent.

That's not what the OP is talking about. You're thinking of "visual smoothness", the OP is talking about touch accuracy.
Here's a article that goes into it and shows how much better the iPhone is. It's from earlier this year, so no EVO or iPhone 4 comparisons, but it should be a similar case for both.
never had any issues with screen lag/responsiveness.
On a side note though, and very weird, I went to do a test in Angry Birds like someone had mentioned and Angry Birds was mysteriously no longer installed on my phone...bizarre....
Well, guess I misunderstood the OP as well. Mine is very responsive. Sorry.

I'm using MIUI and Zen kernel and have no noticeable lag, even when playing games. I will say, however, that the glass screen of the iPhone does give it a performance boost on touchscreen response.
i had some lag issues with fresh 3.4 with the stock kernel switched to kings bfs 11 touch lag gone don't know why but it was switched to net's and lag was back left that kernel on and recalibrated the touch screen by calibrateing the keyboard and lag disapeared again but that was me don't know if it will work for anyone else

Actually, the touch panel on the evo is simply the best on the market. Look up Atmel MaXTouch... This might simply be a driver issue or even a design decision.
Atmel maXtouch: http://www.atmel.com/products/touchscreens/default.asp
Unlimited touches
Low power consumption
Fast response — completely redraws screen every 4/1000 of a second (4ms) to
eliminate recalibration issues
Excellent signal-to-noise ratio for superior precision — 3x better than competitive
products
Superior performance for first-touch response — 3x better than competitive
products
Unambiguous, unlimited touch support
Responsive user interface: > 250 Hz report rate for a single touch
Extremely low current consumption: < 1.8 mW in "touch-ready" state
Two touch adjacency of less than 10 mm on a 4.3 inch (10.9 cm) touchscreen
Small footprint with few external components
Supports stylus, fingernails, and gloves
Grip and face suppression functionality: avoids false touches
Size and angle of touch supported
Screen sizes up to 10.2 inches (25.9 cm) are supported by a single chip
Proximity channel support

It even supports gloved hands if the OEM wants that enabled.
The only lag I have is when the phone is plugged in/charging. Other than that there is absolutely no other lag on my Evo. Those that are experiencing lag make sure it's not during charging.
On a side note the OP is truly an iPhone bias according to his previous post. Thought It's pretty funny.

If you're up-to-date and you have a significant amount of free space on your internal storage and your phone is still laggy... return it because it's obviously defective.
Try a factory reset and/or a new kernel. Then kill off some of the sprint and htc bloatware.
Going from HTC Kernel #11 to #17 there was a noticeable difference in performance for me.
Going from there to AOSP was a complete improvement.
The stock rom is unbearable once you use a tweaked rom.
If none of that works I would bet your phone is defective and you should go back to your iphone.
Want to supply us with a software version and kernel version of your phone?
Or atleast something more than "The Evo sucks and the iphone is great"

[Q] What is the biggest advantage of WP7?

Hi,
I'm WinMo 6,5 daily user, I'm thinking about upgrade to WP7, but I'm not sure it would be better for me, because I won't be able to
- scan by photos (due to auto focus problem)
- transfer my data by card adapter
But, why should I turn into WP7? What is the biggest advantage?
Definitely speed. It's probably fastest mobile OS available.
only speed. there is no other advantages about WP7
720p vid recording, internet browser speed, and the overall os is just soooo fast and i know that u didnt ask for the disadvantages, but i just thought i'd let u know that there's no multitasking :/
720p recording..
ok i don't do much camcorder myself...but some may find it big +ve
720p was the only reason I bought HD2 5 months ago. LOL. I knew it had to have happpened someday. Now Im relieved........Lol. Also like the registry hacks for wifi N, better gaming performance, like TWO FINGER TOUCH IN FRUIT NINJA WORKS PERFECTLAAAYYYY(in android HD2 has fake multitouch, it lags basically). But no multitouch in Assassin, or any other GAME> WHYYYYYY.
I know what your saying about multitasking but as long as i can listen to some
music and do other stuff what does it matter.
WP7 has the best farting app, bar none. Yes, you can include the whole iOS App Store and Android Market in this comparison.

Yeah, any of the ones I found are no where near as good as the ones on the iphone?
you better stay with 6.5 ...
HD2 WP7 over everything else????
The best thing about WP7 is it's on your HD2. What more could you ask for.
If you want you can still keep 6.5 for the more business like stuff (on your SD), but that will all soon be WP7 aswell.
WP7 is better than all other OS for quality of Apps (XBoxLive for instance) theres just not as many.
Plus when you show people how great your phone is and how good it looks compared with their i-Phones you can be all smug on the inside while pretending you're not really that bothered.
Just don't let them take any pictures with it!!!!
Picture quality and aurofocus is not a problem with the alternative camera app found here:

Switching from Vibrant to HD2

Got a bit tired of Vibrant.....not that its bad, its a great phone and TouchWiz has been great too, GPS worked fine as well.....but the lack of ROMs made me switch. I tried going back to Nexus One.....no go, screen is crap, cant type anything without mistakes after Vibrants SAMOLED.....so HD2 came into my mind. Ironically, this Windows 6.5 phone has more Android support then Vibrant. It runs anything you want, Win6.5, Win7.0, CM7, Miui, HTC Sense, and even Linux......thats why I decided to give it a shot, at least until Pyramid comes out.
I've used both...
The screen size of the HD2 is nice, but the Vibrant display is superior in every other way IMO. And while the HD2 has some excellent ROMs, I wouldn't expect everything to work out of the box. It may run all those OSes you just mentioned, but the only one it officially runs is WinMo 6.5. Expect to compromise on features and do some tinkering otherwise. (If you require HD video recording, for example, don't even consider the HD2.)
It sounds like you've had pretty good luck with your Vibrant (compared to other Vibrant owners). Especially considering the fact that you don't mind TouchWiz, not sure I'd recommend the switch...that's just my opinion from several weeks experience. Your mileage may vary of course.
Good luck though. The HD2 has the best build of any phone I've ever used.

well, since today, Miui Gingerbread is officially supported on hd2. this is one of the reasons for switch. Miui work great on my Nexus 1
I have both the vibrant and hd2, the hd2 is my back up/ fun phone. I gotten tired of touch wiz and wanted to try aosp android. So after months of having the hd2 I flashed everything under the sun and loved it. There is always something new to do on the hd2.
But as for battery life, stability and speed i still use the vibrant for my main phone.

After using the HD7 so much, I cannot fathom going back to using only a 4" screen as my main phone. I still use my Vibrant daily - I think some of the Official Apps on WP7 like Twitter and FB still need a bit more work. But with just 0.3" less screen size it feels too small already. I can barely type on it anymore.
The screen is really good but once you start using the other phones (even using them side by side) I don't think I ever really think about which screen is better, TBQH.
And yea, the build quality of the HD2 is great outside of the dust-attracting speaker grilles
However, the Vibrant makes a superior phone to the HD2/HD7. Reception is a lot better. The Vibrant's speakers are also a lot better than the HD2/HD7s. Less tinny and twice as loud. Even the earpiece volume for talking on the phone on an HD2/HD7 is almost 50% thinner and lower in volume than the Vibrant.
Just makes me think how much of a shame it was for Samsung to put such terrible software on the Vibrant (not in function or aesthetics, but in performance and robustness).

Stay away from the SGS2, you'll never be able to go back to a 4.3 inch.
Nothing against the vibrant but I jsut bought an dell streak. Vibrant is the champion being the longest phone in my possession. Im just bored with it and the dell streak is about the only phone I havent had besides the nexus s. Just waiting until the sgs2 comes out.
So far 4.3'' is pretty impressive, dont miss SAMOLED at all. Both speakers suck in HD2 compared to Galaxy, built quality is much better then Galaxy, Android actually runs faster (maybe the same), battery life dont know yet..... I hear mixed reports that Gingerbread is draining more battery......but the good thing is that Miui updates are comming out each week and no wipe is needed. Might try Gingerbread Sense UI later on since its still "new" to HD2

Not sure about the latest releases, but pongster's GBX ROM has a great reputation battery-wise. And yeah, those GB Sense builds will be sick if they get the camera working.

I got mine with Android ROM so it was easy. with original windows, you have to flash radio, spl, and bootloader. after that its easy, and pretty much the same as Vibrant, flash the same clockwork recovery and flash Rom of your choice.

I will glady help you flash roms on the Hd2.
It may seem complicated, but most of it is done through the computer. DFT's executables are very simple to operate. And unless you flash the wrong radio or mess up the bootloader, the phone is impossible to brick, partly thanks to the ability to flash through the computer (kind of like odin).
battery lasted 9 hours of pretty heavy use in 3g area with brightness set to auto....mostly playing and browsing the net, not much talk time or gps. also right now and at least in Miui, I can't change settings for light sensor (its a bug or something) and stock brightness is pretty high. Ones thats fixed, I bet it will greatly help the battery.

I came from an HD2 to a Vibrant. Gave the HD2 to my brother (android virgin). I love the screen size and the ease of running multiple roms on it but speaker and camera annoys the heck out of me. Funny though because I don't even use GPS that much and barely take picture but those are some things I NEED to have in a phone.
ANyway, good luck with your new phone. I am a bit jealous of not being able to run GB w/ gps my vibrant but it makes up in other area.
