Any way to edit build.prop while running from SD CM7? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Runnning CM7 on a Nook color "OFF THE SD" card and cannot edit my build.prop file. Is this because the system is running off of that card ? I have tried to use the ES File Explorer but cannot "mount" the system when I go in the settings.
I don't want to load this OS in to the internal memory just yet and thought it would be great to make the changes needed for the app store and netflix.
All the threads I see relate to if the OS is running on internal memory not the SD.
Thanks in advance,
housej55

Try root explorer yes it costs money but it is one of the most useful apps you can buy.

Hope I can learn something new today, I've seen a lot of threads/posts indicate about changing the build.prop. Why is that? What's that for? and in what case, we need to modify it?

I edit it to set the LCD density to 187 (defaults to 161); that's pretty much the screen resolution, so if buttons are too small to hit, you can make everything bigger.
Other things in there tell Android what platform is running, so that if an app (market, netflix, etc) cares, it can check.
And you can modify it when running from SD, use Root Explorer, navigate to /system, then tap the "mount R/W" button to enable writing, long-press the file, pick "open in text editor", make your changes, menu/save&exit, reboot.

bloatware

how do i remove blockbuster? etc? do i have to root?
sorry for asking dumb question. i am new to android and a new verzion customer
IF you've rooted your phone, then the easiest way is to buy Root Explorer (trust me it's worth the couple bucks) and navigate to /system/app and find blockbuster.apk or whatever it's called. Click mount r/w and longpress, then delete it. Or rename it to .bak instead of .apk
There is another way to do it using ADB, but if you're new to Android it's probably a bit more complicated than buying the app. If you wanna know how to do it on adb just let me know.
edit: Also, welcome to the Android side.
lol thanks....
i think i already rooted. im using DroidXRoot to rooted the driod x. i just install root explorer and its not working.
blockbuster.apk cannot be renamed because the file system is read-only.
Do you guys know where the files for the bloatware 3G Hotspot are? I would prefer to use wifi tether vs the included app.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Hide it then. You don't HAVE to use it.
Also when you get the read only message, as was previously stated, you have to mount it as r/w rather than read only.

Just watch out what you delete...I wasn't able to update to froyo because it was missing system apps. I ended up having to reinstall the system apps and resetting all of the permissions.
Now I just use LauncherPro to hide stuff. If you are dead set on removing them though, I am sure most of us would recommend only renaming the apk files instead of deleting. While you can definitely reinstall them, it tends to be a pain. Also, I heard that removing some apps would cause a boot loop. Haven't experienced it myself, but something to watch out for I guess.
Use launcher pro to hide as well

I accidentally deleted the Conversations.apk... for future reference how do you reinstall system apps and reset permissions?
Thanks in advance,
Brandon
Instead of renaming or deleting apps/bloatware, just use "Titanium Backup" donate version and you can freeze apps/bloatware so they don't load up. This way if you want to update the phone later, you don't have to worry about things you deleted that need to be on the phone for the update to work.

Are you rooted? If not, you cannot do it, because you need root access to do changes in /system directory. If, you can do it with e.g. one of the following apps:
Root explorer (paid)
Super Manager (free)
File Expert (free)
After starting, you need to mount (switch) r/w. Additionally, in both free apps, you need to enable root option in their settings before. Now can you can overwrite.
Yessss !! it works (yes, I'm rooted)
Thank you, MatDrOiD ! I used File Expert. Just 2 questions:
in file expert, when i go into options - mount - and choose "read and write" should I be already positioned browsing the "system" folder ??
I've done this way, but I suspect that "mount read and write" is a global option referring to system folders and can be enabled just when entering File expert ?

I don't like to say it, but pressing thanks-button would be awesome!
You can also mount r/w while in root folder, does not matter. After closing file expert, you always have to enable root explorer function and mounting r/w again, when you start file expert the next time. At least i cannot find an option to enable it permantly. Which is understandable for me, because superuser rights can damage your phone (so this enable action works metaphorically as a little warning, imho).

Help using Ninjamorph to change icon!!!

I am trying to change the Icon using Ninja Morph. I did exactly what the tread on "how to NinjaMorph" but it does not work.
It seems like I can change the color on the Icon's but it will not let me change out the Icon.
Here is what I did.
I start with New Project
go System than App
than I go the the app that I want to change the Icon
open Res, than Drawable-hdpi, tap the icon I want to change.
Than it opens a folders
I go to the folder with the Icon that I want to replace it with
I click on the Icon that I want use.
After that I exit
than I go to Finish Project,
It as me to confirm Action and couple of other question after.
I reboot the phone and the icon is not change.
What am I missing?
Note: I already did review the tread "how to ninjamorph" and it seem like I am doing everything correctly. The only thing is that the tread says that phone should reboot automatically and mine doesn't. I reboot manually.
When I change the icon color on "edit icon", it works fine.
By the way, I already have busybox installed.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

When I edit the icon, it would disappear but when I reboot the phone, app will reappear. The only thing is that I have to mount the app in the system. Once I edit the app it was not reinstall with app manager. In other words I have to mount the application directly into the zip folder for the system then reinstall the theme or the rom.

I've had some experience with ninja morph not always accepting my changes. After you open your project, use astro to go to sd/androidthemes/workspace. Copy paste the files using astro and then go to ninjamorph and finish the project. Then I use root explorer to paste the app in system/app. Install it (sometimes says fail but it works) then change the permissions and reboot. Just match the permissions list with any other app in system/app as they're all the same. Then reboot. Hope this helps.

What do you mean by changing the permission? Also, can you be little bit more specific with instructions? I am fairly new to all this.
Also, is there a way I can try to change the icons with my computer? Is there a program or an app out there that works like a Ninja Morph for the desktop?

I actually use picsay on the phone to make small edits to the icons. I then pull them from my sd to my pc to convert the jpeg back to png and insert them. But you can also use photoshop to edit images/create your own. Theg have to be the correct size.
I gave up. I just decided to use Better Cut. I never knew/realized you can customize icons on your phone with icon.

Screen after 2.3.4 Update

Hey Guys, I updated and rooted my phone to 2.3.4 HK...
Anyways, I remember seeing a post about an app that lets you enable the whole screen.
It appears that I have some dead space on the main home screen and I can not place any widgets in it (Its in the bottom)...
Any way I can fix that ? I cant remember the app name for the life of me.
thank you,
Alex
Hey, just use root explorer or shell in order to edit the build.prop in your system folder (or just use CWM and mount your /system folder to your computer). in the build.prop, there is a section that describes the ppi and for some reason, it's set as default to 240. Change it to 275 and it should fix all screen issues.
thanks for your response!! I checked thru Root Explorer, and only found
dpi... not PPI.. is that what you meant? Cause I see that listed as 240.
Also, do I need to reset after the edit?
Thanks a lot!!
The stock launcher seems to be messed up, get a different launcher.

Some people have complained about the resulting effects of changing the build.prop file with this fix. Better to just use a different launcher than stock as was said.
LCD density for root I believe it is the 270 setting you need to select.

Honestly I would recommend nand install but I understand not everyone wants that. I would have to at least try reinstalling it and possibly a different rom...

Edit the lcd_density=167 to lcd_density=160

Browse to Internal storage /system/
Long click on "build.prop" and change permissions to get full access to the file.
Long click on "build.prop" and Open as.. text (Using TED text editor)

Select "Details/Clear cache/Force stop"
Click "Force stop" & "OK"

Hopefully this works! If not, try changing density to 240 (instead of 160) as many advise this is better. However a 240 density, makes display larger, while 160 is very much similar to what you now have.

I run NAND builds and this is something that I have noticed. For example an app would work just fine with typhoon CM7, but when running Hyperdroid CM7 it would give me the compatibility error like you're getting. My guess is it has something to with how the ROM is cooked, but I could be wrong; I'm still kinda NEWB

First of all, the guideline works on SD ROM installation. I never tried NAND cause I need to have dual boot option
As for the "File not saved" warning, before editing the boot.prop remember to change permissions (you've missed a step)! After all changes are done, save and close. Then restore permissions...

Thats probally my issue, the other tut like this i used didnt have the change permission thing.How do I change permission on such file?
After changing density to 160, you also have to change the phone model infos (search for adjusting build.prop to htc vision, but I'm not sure of this can be done in SD builds.
Also, you have to (after changing density) reboot and then force srop market and clear market data and cache.
Altogether, this should do it.
Edit: to be able to rewrite build.prop, get ES task explorer (it's free) and you have settings there, at their bottom is make system writable. Check that.
When I long click build.prop.. theres no option to change permissions.

What file manager do u use?
I use 'File Expert' as file manager and by long press on the file, a pop-up menu appears. It has 'Permissions' at the mid-lower part of the menu. Open it and just enable all-you will fix permissioms at the end..
I don't know how other file managers handle this, but I'm sure they do it somehow!

Here's how my part of my build.prop looks, maybe it will help, you should change it exactly to these:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=tmobile
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision
(then few lines lower)
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
(Few more lines lower)
ro.build.product=vision
Plus of course the density to 160.
Save, reboot, clear market data and cache.
I have just checked my market and for me words with friends free is available for download.
So if THIS doesn't work, I give up.
