Hello,
Its driving me nuts and I can't find the answer anywhere.
I bought an Ideos X5 and I have been trying every ROM i can get my hands on.
In all of em I find the same issue that I cannot resolve.
The phone is downloading and uploading stuff ALL the time. I do mean all the time.
If Data is enabled then the 3G, or H is up there in the staus connecting all the time.
Recently I tried MIUI and it comes with a firewall which I used to block every app i have but with no result. its still there.
I thought it could be because of the GPS being aided but I disabled that too.
Any idea? My data plan is being consumed by god knows what and its happening in every ROM available.

The fact that the icon is present at the top doesn't mean that it's doing traffic. That is just like the wifi icon, to let you know that you have 3G/HSDPA connection established. If you don't have any applications like sync, email, mms, browsing, games that go online etc, than your data consumption should be something like 100kbytes/day. I've got a 500 mb plan and with emails on and applications downloaded I never go over 70-80mb the whole month... So, I believe that whatever application you've installed on the phone, that is consuming your data plan.
BTW, this is a smartphone, which was designed to stay online...so you may have to look into upgrading the data plan.
Try droidwall at market. It can block selective app connect internet.

that clears it up then! i installed 3g whatchdog in the meanwhile though just to be safe!
edit, but wait a second, my friends at work have androids and its not always up there. the symbol I mean.

Hi.
I have a problem with my X10. I don't know if is android related or only applies to X10.
I posted in another section but i didn't get any answers so, it might be only X10.
Here it is.
A few days ago i installed a network monitor from market and reset the counters to 0 at midnight.
In the morning i had 12Mb traffic.
After, i disabled google sync, facebook and twitter updates, removed the weather widget from screen and i still had constant traffic.
2h ago i did a factory defaults and i only installed NetSentry and a task killer.
I don't have sync configured, no weather, no twitter, etc.
I killed all the apps excepting net sentry (including the task killer), set the counters to 0 and in 15min i have 130k traffic.
I don't have a data plan so, i'm only using wifi.
Can somebody with an X10 to monitor their traffic with net sentry (or other net monitor app)?
But, somebody with 3G or WIFI active all the time (WIFI sleep policy set to Never).
I'm curious if is something with my phone or ...
hey dude, i have the same thing happening here. i think its andriod not the phone. but i do agree with with you, some kind of time-out for the phone to disconnect if its sleeping is necessary not only to conserve battery but for those with limited data plan.

Well, if you are in WIFI area 22h/day you don't need a data plan but you need data active to receive mails, updates, etc so, my WIFI is always active.
I know is not the phone... what i want to figure out if is the Rogers branded firmware which has a problem or is something general and all X10 (or even all androids) are doing the same traffic.
Here in Canada, Rogers has stupid data plans.
25$ for 500Mb, 30$ for 1Gb, 60$ for 3Gb and 80$ for 5Gb.
If my phone is doing 0.5Mb in 1h without any apps running, those plans are a rip off
This means ~350Mb per month without any emails, browsing, etc gone on absolutely nothing.

Cool... I've a 3G data plan so I don't really care for data traffic (I will however do the test and share results), but having 3G attached consumes very quickly the battery (100% at 8:00 AM, 20% at 8:00 PM, with push e-mail on both Moxier and GMail). How long lasts the battery with WiFi always connected?

I'm running the stock firmware and actually I don't find the battery so amazing: consuming 80% of charge in half a day is very bad. And this is achieved by disabling Bluetooth (with my previous Xperia X1 I was used to let BT always turned on) and minimal usage. If I surf a bit, or talk few minutes, I will run out of battery, and this is not acceptable...
Please, this is not about battery or power management, we have another thread for that.
So, nobody wants to do the test for 30min to see if they have traffic when background sync is disabled and all the other apps killed?

It wasn't my intention to go off topic, I just asked you how long lasts your battery with WiFi always connected.
I plan to do the 30 minute test this week end. Which application are you using to count the transferred data?

Well, never more than 12h but i listen music via Bluetooth a few hours and i play a lot with the phone (heh, new toy)
I bought UltimateJuice ... i hope i'll see an improvement.
Nobody else has problems with data?
Or, everyone has unlimited data plans?
the constant data access appears to be a function of Android. i immediately noticed that when i entered my network settings.
the perfect solution i found was to install an app called APNdroid, which you can get for free at the Android market. this allows you to toggle your network data connection on and off and gives you total control over your data consumption.
Well, the idea is: i need my data on most of the time.
But, i don't want unwanted data
And it seems nobody knows which app or service is doing this traffic.
And more than that, it seems that nobody cares
Try to use 3d watchdog to monitor traffic. Best straightforward application
Link
And Install APN Droid and switch on/off 3G when ever you want.
Link
even further you can install profile package to automatically activate wifi or 3g on certain time or location.
@Shiwanta, thank's for the tip of 3G Watchdog ! Will try it soon.

Hi there!
I'm eagerly waiting for SGS to be released in my country (Bulgaria) to take my greedy hands on it. I peronally believe that SGS is most finished Andriod mobile as for now. During waiting, I would like to ask all of happy real users a following question:
[QUESTION] Is it possible to turn all data connection surely off?
I know, there is an option to shut data off, but is it sure? In HD2 even you turned off data connection, the phone decides to turn it on by itself in matter of minutes, whithout asking for permition . Temporarily, I have a very limited data plan, so such an situation can easily get me overcharged.
Your detailed commends will be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance!
it is possible with 3rd party programs like APN ON/OFF, Data On Demand, etc..
Yes, there is an app called APNDroid on the Market that changes the APN settings when you want to turn off data. This way you can be sure it won't use any data as the APNs don't work.
I use APNdroid, a free app, for turning of data traffic. Up until now, a week, it has not been turned on automatically. It pretty much works the way I expect it too.
However no guarantees. Even APNdroid says that some programs might remain active, but my battery certainly improves with turned of 3G.
Thank you for immediate answers. It prety much seems that APNDroid will do the job. However, next question arrose:
[QUESTION] How can you supervise your data traffic, e.g. how many MB you've already spent?
Great forum, tho.
Best.
I use 3G Watchdog. You can set a monthly data limit which is nice. And it works together with APNdroid by shutting off 3G automatically when you for example reach 99% of that monthly quota. It doesn't do this out of the box. You have to enable the feature in the settings of 3G Watchdog after installing APNdroid.
I suggest that you install 3G Watchdog app first.
Yes, I too use 3G Watchdog.
Very nice App and you get to see both Received & Transmitted data for:-
Quota
Today
Week
Month
Thank you very much for the comprehensive answers of yours!
I have no more questions. Waiting for the release date.
Wish you nice day.
Hi Guys,
I am wondering what kinda data usage you can expect from the DZ per month. I plan to use it for occasional web browsing, weaher updates, email and calendar sync.
I would like to download and use different apps - but concerned do a normal app always need to be connected to the internet for it to run or does it run locally and only connects if it needs to download any data?
Any thoughts will be very helpful.
Thanks.

Apps will only access the Internet if/when they need to. So for a standalone app, that might be never.
So no, normally apps don't need to be connected to the Internet, unless that's part of their function (e.g. an online banking app that only works via the Internet to access your bank's servers etc).
Maybe I'm a little offtopic: is there any app that will show daily and monthly data usage for each application, but only data from the mobile network (no WiFi/USB)? It would be useful to know how much each app is using. With WM, I had SPB Wireless Monitor for that - so something similar would be perfect.
Audette: it's always better to get a data plan for a smartphone. Mostly much cheaper then pay-as-you-used.
darthmelk: try Check out "3G Watchdog" in the market.
I use 3G Watchdog, but it doesn't show data usage for each application (or I don't know how to display that?). That's the only thing it's missing.
There is one app that showed individual data usage, however this app itself was a massive drain on the phones CPU and battery so I would not advice using it.
In any event I forgot what it was called
I use about 500mb a month mobile data, but I use wifi whenever I can.
Try TrafficInfo or TrafficStats. They do show per application usage (sent/recieved). I just installed them yesterday and the TrafficInfo seems a bit nicer to me.
I am looking for an application that could show which application is currently downloading/uploading real time, something like netlimiter on the PC.
At traffic stats is what I was on about, watch out with these apps, by their very nature they will be a big drain on resources (and therefore battery life).
I had a quick try of Traffic Info. Maybe I was missing something, but this just seems to show Internet usage per application.
The problem is, it doesn't seem to distinguish between Internet usage via my phone carrier connection (which I'm more concerned about) and Internet usage via wireless (which I'm not concerned about).
Can anyone recommend an app which splits the two ? I would have thought that if something access the information at the correct level then it could differentiate.
I am using Network traffic counter (NetCounter) and quite satisfied. It does not track usage per application (and I don't really care...), but fully separate cell & wifi.
So far reached 735 MB on cell and 3 GB on wifi since got the phone on 9th November.

Hi guys,
Why every time when I try to open android market, there is a notification says this transaction costs me 1 cent?
Now I can only open android market in airplane mode. Do you know how to solve this problem?
WOw that is pretty interesting.
Two things
1. I would email google about it
2. Try to delete the market cache from menu - appliction - manage applications.
Is it something related to your data plan
or it does charge when you connected to wifi too?
This phone has an issue. Even though u select not to use mobile data, it will still try to use it with some apps, market is one of them. Next time u open market, look at the status bar, u'll notice H for a brief moment, that's why u get charged, it's not google, it the phone itself. I called dell and talked to them about this, they though the model I got was.faulty, so they sent me a new one, but the new one acts the same way. I also called at&t and have them fully remove data of my phone, but they said they can't do it. the only sollution I thought of, is to use market through your browser.
or try some antivirus program.
I also see this issue, every time I open android market app - it downloads something (can see the H in notification are for a brief moment). But with amazon market app, it doesn't do this. Seems like AT&T is the problem here; maybe their policies are ok to steal 1 cent from non-data plan users.
I had G2X for a few days and this was not happening on that phone and I used the same sim card. It's not a virus, it happens even after factory reset.
This is nothing, try to factory reset your phone and see how much you get charged at initial android set up. You will lose at least a $1 by skipping set up steps in a hurry just to get to options and disable data. wtf is the phone downloading when you aren't even hooked up to your google account? It just choses to use data for no reason...
I reported this before
I reported this before. I even wrote to the FCC and AT&T looked at it and said in their report it was not them, It has to be Google and the Market Software.
If 3G data is off they shouldn't be turning it on and running up your data cost.
That's my complaint. I have a 2Gig plan. and have only used 200Meg at the most during the a month. It's the principal of the issue. You have Data disabled, and it turns it on. By the way, It adds 1K to data each time you access the market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970826
I turn off the data network when I'm not using it and have never had it turn itself on. When you use the market there will always be some data traffic back and forth as it loads the 'specials' etc. and even when you don't use it there will be activity as the device checks for application updates and emails.
As for the 1 cent charges, do they actually appear on your bank account?
Doesn't your phone need internet access to go on the market? Like to Download what Apps are on the market? Makes sense really
Did they reply your complaint? Were you complaining to ATT or Google?
I think I should send a complaint about this issue too.

I don't use mobile network at all, in the settings, the mobile network for att is not activated. I use wifi all the time.
However, sometimes when I open android market, the mobile network is enabled automatically (yes, I can see an "H" icon in the notifacation bar). I think there is a bug with the android market.
BTW, I'm a prepaid plan user, att did charge 1 cent every time.

I guess android market enables the mobile network automatically, but only for a very short time when it starts up, after that, it starts to use wifi.
This probably is a bug of android market, I will report this to Google. Do you guys know how to report bugs to Google?

Oh I get what you mean, that does suck. Especially when you have it in airplane mode, thought that stopped everything!
This isn't just the market app, I had this happen to me in Skype, so I uninstalled it. I also tried Amazon market yesterday, mobile network is never in use with them, so it's a good idea to use that instead.
I think it's Dell, because like I said before, I had Optimus 2X for a few days and market doesn't do this on that phone. I also talked to At&t several times, they refuse to turn off data access
shouldn't charge just to look at the Apps.....something not right there. I persoannly have not seen this yet.
More Info about Report
I filed a complaint to the FCC naming AT&T, and Google. Only AT&T responded to the complaint. When Filing the complaint online you are limited as the how much you can type so I had to shorten it. Only AT&T contacted me, and stated that it was not them. As I kept checking this, It has to be the Market Place, and Google Software issue. If you have Mobile Data turned off, and operate only on WiFi, Mobile Data is activated when connecting to Market Place, and 1K of data is transmitted and it is added to your data usage.see below.

FCC Complaint
My complaint is that my phone is using data when data is turned off.
Phone = Dell Streak 5
Application = Google Market Place
Carrier = AT&T Mobile
The phone, has an option to turn off 3G data connection so that you won’t be charged data when connected to WiFi. I use the phone most of the time when home on a WiFi network expecting not to incur data usage and the charges associated with using a 3G data connection.
After updating my phone to the latest software on the 23, February, 2011, and installing a program called 3G Watchdog to track 3G data usage, my data use was increasing. I checked this over the next 2 hours and it went from 7 KB to 23 KB of data use. After checking the phone several times making sure the data connection was still turned off, I observed that when using WiFi only that accessing the Google Market Place (an application to download software that came with the phone) that it was turning on the 3G data connection even though it was turned off. I had to go into the settings of the phone and turn the setting on then off to cancel the 3G data connection. Note: after a minuite of so it will shut off by itself.
My complaint is that there is no place that states that Google Market Place will turn on and use 3G data connection when you have it turned off. Dell just released the software update for the phone. After talking to Dell Support tonight for about an hour. They said it just does that.
If you turn off 3G data, so it cannot be used:
Why is Google Market Place turning it on and using the 3G data connection?
Why is Google Market Place or the Dell software update allowing access to your 3G data connection, turning it on and using your data without your authorization when you have your 3G data connection disabled and turned off in the phone settings.
When accessing Google Market Place 3G data connection charges are being incurred.
This unauthorized 3G data use could create an over limit of your data account and cause an increase of your billing for data use of almost double on your data account.
Resolution:
I would like to see the phone or software work as you would expect it to.
1: If I turn off the 3G data connection it would stay off and not be used until it was turned back on.
2: A stop of automatic 3G data usage with out authorization when disabled and turned off.
3: A rewrite of the Dell software update and/or Google Market Place software application or any other software for the Android operating system to not turn on and use a 3G data connection when you have turned off or disabled it.
if you go to accounts& sync setting there is a option call Background data uncheck it, thenyou won't see that happing.
Wouldn't everyone with a streak get the same problem if it was Google that was to blame? Mine stays on wifi, when I load the market app. Maybe its certain streaks or carrier problem.
I got a text from o2 on Sunday saying I'd used 80% of my data allowance—a huge amount since Tuesday!
I've disbaled data for now while I try and figure out what's gone wrong.
I checked the stats on the phone under network usage and it seems that 'Media' has been using the most (nothing else comes close). This has DRM Protected Content Storage, Download Manager, and Media Storage in the package.
I've been on the same ROM for ages (Rod's MIUI) and haven't installed any news apps recently…
Anyone have this problem before or know what's gone wrong??
Have you been using Pandora or another online radio app? Streaming movies?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Use Network Counter by mapeapps to get an idea of what is using data...
I use Google Listen Alot by the end of the month I used 2 GB minimum of data
SPB Mobile Manager will tell you which apps are download/uploading and how much
I've got an app called Monitor (it came with the ROM) that lists the apps and what they've used. Download Manager is listed as having used it all.
I haven't been streaming anything unusual no.
Does anyone know what Download Manager would be used by? I've disbaled it's 3G access and turned my data back on, I'll see how things go...

For me, a single 3 hour podcast ( I <3 listen) is 90+ meg. Add a little bit of twitter and facebook into the mix, 2G is easy to break in one billing cycle.
This is just silly now. I've disabled Download Manager with firewall but it's still using data, apps must be using it and my monitor isn't logging it as the app but that process.
I've had data turned off all day apart from a couple of times to check mail but I've just checked and I've somehow used over 50MB!
Can anyone help?
I think I've figured out what's happened if anyone is interested.
I've had the Android update alert popping up for ages now but I was waiting for Rod to update his ROM before I installed a new one. It's gone now so I'm guessing it's been trying to download the android update in the backgroud whenever I've had a signal.
Serves me right to not updating to a ROM that gets rid of the update alert I guess.
This is gonna be a fun month with no data allowance…
Are O2 that stringent about their data caps or are you a frequent abuser? It pisses me off no end that caps are even in place, especially on 'unlimited' plans, but when they get all pedantic it makes me rage!
FWIW, Vodafone have always been good to me if you're ever thinking of switching. And i abuse the hell out of my data allowance
I've used the full 500MB so I've turned data off, rather not face a large bill...
I've updated ROM from Rod's 2.5 to 2.9 as it had apparently removed the updater. I did this today, in the last few hours Media Storage has used 265MB (on wifi as I still have 3g disabled) even though I've been doing nothing.
Anybody have any clues as to what's going on? I've tried googling with no luck. I did see a couple of similar sounding things and mention of a patch to disable OTA updates... anybody know anything about it?
