Enormeous battery drain.... - Galaxy S II General

Hello to you all!
I'm expiriencig an hudge battery drain since 2 days.
Normaly my battery last for arround 24h. Yesterday I'v unplugged my phone at 6.30AM and till 1PM (I'v made only one call appr. 5min and 3g was on all the time - no othe use!) the battery was gone...
The same in the afternoon and today... I don't remember if the phone ingetting preety warm durrin chargin cos I'm playing or seing tether durring chargeing or sleeping. Now with turned off everything the uper part of the phone (includeing camera and screen) is getting very warm! like durring long playing games with 3G....
I belive it all began with installing the google+ app... I'v just uninstalled it and chargeing the device (every things turned off and still hot...).
Will see if it was that, cos battery stats are ok and battery usage apps arent showeing nothin suspicious...
Any suggestions? I was runnig the sam ROM and config for a longer time without problems...
Ther's another thing I forgot to say - when I'm tryeing to charge the phone while it's on it's not chargeing - the battery get's drained even faster! for egz. when it's 15% charged after 15mins under charger its 4%!!!

To know what's causing the Awake when screen is off, install Better Battery Stats and see under Wakelocks. Confirm if it is G+ or anything else.

Ok, just installed the app. How long do I have to wait to read the stats? and what is it abot the "G"? couldnd find this info

Best thing would have to full charge it, and wait till its like 5% battery, then check the stats.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

Will do that!
Will charge it durring the night and than will wait till it's nearly gone....
It got better i think - without 3G the drain is bearly there but with 3G on it's bad... It wasn't like that before...
Could it be that installing the google+ app it activated kinda sys updates or similar?

Hi oofol!
When you have installed google+ app, have you checked "instant upload"?
It could be the problem.

Yep, done that however I can't imagine it should suck off the battery that much!
FB is working ok

try juice defender

Allready installed
It seems that it was the fould of google+.........

The problem is that when you check this option, your mobile upload all your picture to Picasa and google's server.
At this moment if you're not connect in wifi....
Becareful for those who don't wanna be caught with their bills!

I know about that - and I did want that (I'v got a plan without data limits).
The drain was almost normal today.
However I'm now connected via USB to my laptop and I'm tethering. As I connected the phone it was arround 48% of juice and now it's falling... now its 8% and falling............
Why isn't it chargeing???
I cant understand that...

So, I think I solved the issue.
Yesterday I uninstalled (I was useing ist fo a couple of weeks without any problems...) BitDefender and the phone is chargeing on tethering and the battery life seems to be normal for now
Thanks ithehappy for the tip wit BBS it helped a lot

battery woes :(

ok guys as advised by someone i fully drain my vodafone magic till it dies and then charge it to a 100%.
last night i did the same just before goin to sleep, when i woke up in the morning the battery was at 76% after about 8 hours.I just had 1 missed call,1 sms,1 tweet and 1 email.
How can the battery drain so fast for no work at all???
pls help......
Do you have alot of widgets running? What do you have switched on, Bluetooth,GPS,WiFi? How often do you have the "Data Synch" set for? All of these drain the battery, if they are all working at the same time it goes pretty quick.
Clinton
Woa! For the battery to drain overnight to 76% is crazy. never had this problem with my magic. It actually last very long.
But 76% overnight most likely means your battery is faulty and or you are leaving gps, wifi, and have quite a few things running on the phone like ClintonH stated.
however if you have everything off, as well as the brightness set low. Then contact Vodafone and let them know your issue. they should replace your battery at a free cost.
I suggest people use their battery for a week or 2 to see better results with their battery life. I started having poor battery life with my magic but now I can last about 2 day before I recharge it again.
As other user mentioned, it also depend what you have on or running in the background when your phone is on standby. I suggest you use task manager applications to kill unnecessary applications that might be running.
thanks guys
nope i have gps bluetooth and wifi turned off
i turned the background data off from settings
will try gettin task manager and see if it makes a diff!
thanks once again
also sometimes my trackball keeps flashing white for some reason.....there is no notification....is there any reason for this???

Yes, are you by any chance downloading apps? Sometimes they hang and the download stops / continues lots of times. And when they complete your trackball flashes white.
ok thank mate i'll keep note of that!
I read a quite interesting post in the vodafone forum.
A user complained about the battery life of his HTC Magic. Check the answer from Wayne_Vodafone:
The HTC Magic employs a battery that requires overcharging and topup charging. You must charge it as much and as often as possible. The more you charge the better the battery life becomes. So after a few charges you should see the benefit of this. Letting the charge drain out undoes this so try and charge as often as possible

It actually seems to work. At least for me, try it for yourself.
I have to charge my HT-03A every night if I do not want it to die the next day. I am assuming that is why HTC gives you two batteries, because the battery goes so fast. As long as you are able to carry that second battery around with you, and be able to charge it every night, I don't really see a problem. But for it to go from 100% to 76% overnight means you are running programs that you do not need to. I will add that I have Wi-Fi continuously on, and my Contacts and Calendar are continuously synchronized. With barely any use I am usually at around 50% by the end of the day.

Pretty interesting, and that was an official vodafone response? Why wouldn't HTC say that in the first place? Will give it a go anyway...
Yeah, was a official Vodafone Response.
For me: I've loaded mine over night this morning, now its 19:26 and it's still over 85%. I used it for some SMS, receive a MMS and some WLAN.
ok guys thank u so much for the responses,im gonna give it a go too!
im using taskiller and defi my battery life has improved cause i keep killin the apps im not using
about the flashing trackball.......it still happens...no notifications.....
You never want to drain a Lithium-Ion battery. NiCd batteries have memory, in which it's better to drain them. But not Li-Ion. They will die quicker if you do
ok thanks xantonin.....
i charged my phone to 100%,then made a call for 41 min, battery went to 91%.
went to sleep immediately after that, woke up in morning with 1 missed call and 1 sms, after 8 hours......battery at 70%......thats not right is it?

That could be right.
Depends on what's running.
Where are you checking for 100%?
If you are charging until the green light comes on - that's 90%. The phone takes longer to charge passed 90% than it does to charge up to 90%.
I charged to 99%, and drove around with the GPS on for a few hours (about 2) and came back at about 75%.
However some days, when I charge my phone over night (true 100%), I can listen to music on my way to work (40 mins) on my phone, play with it a bit at work, and 3 hours later it will say 94%.
So, the battery is very touchy it seems...
Try turning off 3G (It's still pretty fast on 2G, try it for a day)
And also make sure GPS is off. Keep your brightness no more than 30%, and make sure WiFi is off. Make sure you don't have any widgets that connect online either.
You should get good standby time
Use apndroid to save battery life
Download apndroid from the Market. Use it to turn off the cellular internet before you go to bed and whenever else you want to save battery life.
There's also an app called Spare Parts in the Market that could help you. As well as giving information about your battery status and battery health, you can also see stastics of your application usage and battery history. A very useful app!
Plus it also enables other features like enabling fancy animations for the keyboard and screen rotation.

Sigh. My Evo's Battery Life is Rediculous (not typical)

Fully charged my phone night before last and went to work in the morning (9am). I didn't touch it all day, didn't even turn it on. On my drive home at 5pm it was dead, off.
I plugged it in with the phone off when I got home and saw that it was fully charged a few hours later around 10pm and I booted it up and left it alone. This morning it was dead, off.
Looking at the apps that take up my battery doesn't work because it doesn't retain information what happened to the phone prior to the last reboot. Not sure what to do. My awake time matches my standby time exactly. It's obviously a 100% awake time problem but what's triggering this?
I'm on Fresh .3 with absolutely no other mods. I don't think I have any apps that ping outside servers. So what the ****!?
EDIT:
lulz, I just realized I haven't been even able to use the phone in 3 days due to this issue

Have you removed the Favorites widget? Doing that stopped all battery drain problems for me. Just delete the widget.
First thing to check is if you have a sufficient cellular signal. If you are getting a weak signal it will cause poor battery life. If cell signal strength is not your problem then it is definitely something you have installed on it eating away at your battery. That said check/do the following:
1) Check how frequently you have your accounts syncing
2) Before the phone dies look in your battery use to see what's eating your battery
3) Install a task manager/killer (I use Advanced Task Killer)
4) You don't have to do this one but it does help. I use a program called Startup Auditor to disable startup on apps I don't need to run when the phone first boots (you'd be surprised how many are in there).

delete it completely or remove it from one of the home panels?
the "time without signal" workarounds seem to prove the most effective for me. in addition, reduce background usage and automatic update frequencies as best as you can.
according to this thread [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709768] (and link within), HTC has acknowledged some issues and is preparing to deploy a few fixes.
You are running someone else's ROM, there could be a problem with the radio, or a problem with the way it was loaded.
If you are in an area where you don't get signal, you are going to drain the battery, and FAST.
Do you have 4g on but not in a 4g area?
I am...
fully rooted and have fresh .3 as well. I am getting over 30hrs with moderate use and the last hour of that I had everything on to purposely run it down to dead. (was doing a toastch recommeded battery meter calibration).
Took my phone off the charger last night at 7:30 pm. It's 2:23pm and I have 31% left. I have Wifi, BT, and Background apps with auto sync turned on.
I would say you might be experiencing the Motorola cell tower problem. HTC has confirmed that the EVO is not playing well with cell towers that have motorola transmitters. It is causing the phone to use more energy to dial in the tower.
To be sure...
1. Set all apps and widgets to manual update or update once a day.
2. Get rid of the people app or widget from any home screen.
3. Go into Gtalk and uncheck auto sign in. Then sign out when you exit the program.
4. charge the phone until the green light comes on. Don't use a battery meter. The second the green light comes on, go into recovery and wipe the battery stats. Reboot the phone and run it until the battery dies and will not longer power the phone. This does nothing for the battery but does recalibrate the internal battery meter.
5. For maximum life...turn off: background data, WiFi, BT, and Mobile networks when not using. keep screen at 1/2 brightness.
If I do the above and manually update mail, weather, social apps, etc... and only turn radios on when I need them, I can get 40 hrs. out of my EVO and this is under moderate to high moderate use.
One other thing....plug your phone in for 10 minutes. Then unplug it and go into immediate stand by for like 30 minutes. Go to settings>about phone>battery>battery use>cell standby. Time without signal should be very low....anything over 10-15% and I'd suspect that if you did everything in 1-5, you have a towers issue robbing your battery.
I was having awake time issues with Fresh .3, so I switched to DamageControl, and everything has been great. Unplugged this morning at 7, and I still have 75% battery remaining. Better battery life than the Hero or BlackBerry Tour!

I seem to be having the same problem as you and it is quite frustrating. I get a steady 10% battery drain every hour even when its idle. I tried juice defender and setcpu and it is still the same. I turned off all my sync accounts and nothing. I also have systempanel and it doesn't seem like theres a rogue app eating my batteries.I'm going to truth to stock tonight to see if something is wrong with my phone. Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your phone?
AVA9 i get 20 hours a charge
but YES something is eating your battery install system pan have and let it run a bit and check the info id bet its
1 your evo spend a lot of tWOS
2 you have a rogue app eating your battery

I do apologize for bumping such an old thread, but I feel like this thread has already asked much of what I also wanted to ask but have not reached a conclusion. Therefore I would like to try and solve the problem or provide as much info as I can to solve the problem.
I indeed have installed systempanel and here are the screenshots for the day.

As you can see besides the internet, there is nothing else thats taking up the battery. Also I took this pic after I put the phone on the charger for a bit, it was at ~ 13% before. The battery usage information says a majority of the battery was used by #1 android system and #2 cell standby, it was neck and neck almost, with #3 being phone idle. My weather app polls every 3 hours, my facebook syncs every 30 mins, my htc sense facebook syncs once a day, and I have not configured any other emails except for two gmail acconts, which received probably 3 emails throughout the whole day.
I just used setcpu today, it made absolutely no difference. Same results as yesterday when I did not have setcpu. Thanks in advance for the help!

Why would anyone use an EVO as a simple phone.
I am beginning to think peoples opinions on moderate use vary tooooo much. The EVO is similar to an unplugged laptop. The more you make the cpu work the faster your battery is going to drain.
It seems some people just dont get that.

battery drained out.....any idea

for some odd reason my battery was drained out very fast, i mean fast....
i thought it was my battery but i guess its my phone....cuz i bought a new battery n it was at 60% n less than 3 min it was down to 6%....
is there a way to fix this or is my phone broken...
any help would be good....
thank you!!!
Enter *#*#4636#*#* in the dialpad, that brings you to a service menu. There, go to Battery History and select Partial wake usage. That shows you if you have some app installed that prevents the phone from sleeping.
Also, the battery needs to go through a couple of full charge-discharge cycles before it reaches it full capacity.
Hope that helps!
Was it hot?
Hi,
To dissipate that amount of energy in that time would make the unit very hot indeed.
Is the unit getting hot?
If not, then the energy wasn’t really there and it’s likely your battery is damaged/faulty and needs replacement.
Regards,
Paul.
The best advice i can give you is to find a widget that disables your data connection.
I used to have major battery drain. ie: Right after a charge, i only got 97%. By 10am, with almost no usage, im on around 68%.
Now, with data disabled (when not in use), i am still on 95% since i took it off charge at about 12am in the morning!

Can I ask you what widget you use for that? I'm facing the same problem: 94% right after recharge and rapid discharge after that.
Try "Data on demand", worked for me.
P.
data on demand is brilliant.. but I don't think that is the problem that the OP has experienced - no amount of data use would cause the battery to drain that quickly.. it's likely to be 1 of 2 things..
1. Faulty battery.
2. faulty app which is battering the processor and using 3g/wifi at the same time..
no the battery is not hot....my phone was working fine this 3 day ago....n now with the new battery is still the same.......
i also turn of everything on my phone n restart everything...with 0% this morning ....with my phone n now im back home im still at 23%.......is it virus?...but i scan my phone with this app from the market n its fine........
Timescape and Mediascape might be the cause
Hi, I had the same problem. I had to charge my phone three or four times a day. I read in a thread here that some people removed Timescape and got amazing improvements. I removed Timescape, Mediascape and other applications I don't need. Your phone must be rooted for removing these applications.
This night my battery dropped 3% in six hours. I now charge once a day and is happy with that.
Helps to mention to them any side effects of removing timescape n so forth..
Sent from my rooted 026 X10i using swype via XDA!!
Yeah, removing timescape and mediascape is a good idea, i also removed the phone dialer, and the browser because it was draining lots of battery, and also removed parts of the Android UI but figured it was still using some battery, so i now use the shell on minimum screen luminosity and always on plane mode !
Yes, you can mock about it, but both Timescape and Mediascape got replacment apps which are actually way more usable and gives me more than just a fancy user interface.
That is one of the good things about Android. I am not locked to any application.
Sorry to take over here but whats a good replacement for timescape? I've tried many phonebook apps and they all look horrible.
I would really like the HTC sense phoonebook any way i can get that?

I don't know about that but theres apps such as acontacts, takephone (something like that) n quickcall!

It happens to me once, from 92% to 36% in just under 6 minutes. Then draining very fast after that. I removed one application I installed (can't remember the exact name) and rebooted and it never happen again...
phone is dead now..........
wont charge!!!!
this suckx!!!!
wast of money!!!!!!
You need to take it back buddy - it's obviously faulty.
Dear all members,
I plug in the phone yesterday for charging and probably due to the charger was not plugged into the socket probably, it is not charging.
To my surprise, when I wake up in the morning, the battery was drained and shut off.
I try to charge the battery up but the charging seems a little slow now, is the battery faulty?
I can feel the back of the phone was hot though.
Definitely something wrong with my battery, I have been charging from morning till now and the battery never charges up to 22%, when it reaches 22%, it will drain out slowly even the socket is still connected.
I will have to bring my phone down for them to check.

Horrible battery life

My Huawei has a horrible battery life. I'm using stock rom (rooted of course) and the battery drains really fast, like 5-10% an hour even in sleep mode. I have used a battery calibration app recommended by someone here in xda, but I don't think it made any difference. My last Android phone used around 1% an hour, even with data and sync on, but with pretty much the same settings, I can hardly make it through the day with my Huawei.
So, what to do? I don't need the battery to last for days, but having to recharge twice a day at worst is just too much.
My battery drops around 7-10% overnight.
Probably a defective cell?
mine after i installed custom rom (b160) and a battery calibartion in flight mode during my sleep after 7 hours that passed and woke up it was 1% dropped and now 7 almost hours afterwards in normal mode it has dropped 7% with very light use of course...
i want to say just that with gsm active it drained 5% more than in flight mode...
so something must be going wrong , like you don't have a good signal and it uses much power to keep your connection alive and have better signal....
i must say that i have a profile with setcpu when the screen is off with min 122 and max 460...
and just for the record i think that with custom rom also mine was dropping more...
i don't know why although...

Noticed this myself. i use spotify alot on the phone, walking, bicycling, at the gym. and it drains a whole lot of power even in offline mode. but if i set it in flight mode the phone last for hours and hours without even dropping 5-10% of power. but when gsm or data traffic is on the battery life just drains out so quickly! so it is definitly something serously wrong in this rom. Im hoping gingerbread is coming soon to this phone, so maybe all these small issues has been fixed.
I've found highly variable battery life. Sometimes it's awful, almost 50% overnight when it's sleeping on my nightstand, other times it's much better and only drops 7-10% under those conditions.
One thing is Google Maps, even when not in use it seems to suck battery like crazy if it's loaded (and it has a habit of getting loaded even when you don't run it or any apps that use it). There's a long thread on this in the Google support forums, but no sign of a fix from Google yet.
I've found doing a 'force stop' on Maps if it's running often helps, another thing is to reboot the phone after you charge it, that seems to fix it for several days sometimes, but then it starts sucking juice again for no apparent reason, so I tend to reboot it after each recharge. There can also be other apps that due to bugs can suck battery, for a while there app killer did this but the author put a fix out pretty quick and it shouldn't be an issue now.
Just noticed that there's an Android update from Huawei now available for download, maybe that'll fix some of the irritations and help with battery life; I'm off to install it!
where can you find that update? through phone's settings->check for update (in my case it says i got the latest version) or online?
My phone has been on for nearly 48 hours.. charging it right now. I played, connected to wifi, browsed the net, facebook, gmail etc.. and I really played hard on it for a few hours.
30mins ago it switched off, dead battery.. I'm quite pleased with the battery life

Exactly the same problem here. I formatted now both the internal and external SD card, let's see if that helps.
edit: No it doesn't. The problem seems to be that my phone doesn't sleep properly. I charged it to full, then turned the screen off for one hour. App called Spart Parts shows that since last unplugged, time spent without sleeping is 36m.
it took mine 2 weeks to get to the full battery life. now i get 36-48 hours from it.

After 5 weeks i get about 12hrs. No GPS, no 3G. About 10min ago i took the charging cable off. Now Battery History in Spare Parts show that "Since last unplugged" time spent without sleeping is 10m 33s (99.9998%), and time spent with screen on is 3m 23s.
im thinking of buying this phone is it available in India ? also can this device be rooted n what about the custom roms ? are they available as there is nthng on XDA :'( . And what about its battery life even being 1500mah is it so awful ?

Now after factory reset it seems that this is fixed. Over night with Wi-Fi and all sync's enabled, it took about 20% which is quite ok.

The problem is back... For some unknown reason the phone doesn't go to sleep and starts to use more battery.
Battery History:
Other usage, since last unplugged:
Running (100%)
Screen on (3,2%)
Partial wake usage, since last unplugged:
Android System: Total time: 13s
Dialer: Total time: 0s
Maps: Total time: 0s
It seems that reboot helps with this every time. After reboot, running-% is 32.9 when screen on is 6.5%. It would still be interesting and helpful to know what causes this.
its an android thing

Do you mean it's a common bug, or is it normal thing for Android to not go to sleep after few hours of using the phone?

That's not true. My battery history shows that correct(as far as I can perceive) running time.

I get most of the time also. But after charging, at one point (after some time) for some reason the time spent without sleeping goes to 99%. The problem is, that the partial wake usage doesn't show that something is wrong. Usually restart helps, but sometimes it can be already late, because 100% running has already taken quite much of the battery.
Also, when the time spent without sleeping is 99% or 100%, the CPU is still NOT in heavy use. So something just prevents the phone to go to sleep mode, and it seems that it is not the CPU that causes it.

I got it through the phone, it was the 2.2.1 B136SP02 update. Not online at Huawei website. It doesn't seem to have improved battery life alas (or the frequent WiFi dropouts I've had since new, particularly while downloading app updates). Main feature of the update is WiFi tethering/hotspot support, at last...
What seems to have worked for me after a couple of weeks++ of REALLY crappy battery life is a battery stats wipe.
FullCharge while the phone was off. First boot in recovery, battery wipe and then i just let it run close to dry before the first charge (almost 48 hours of medium use). Note here that i am now using the charger that came with the phone because i noticed that my generic usb one had an output of 0.7A instead of the full 1A of the factory charger.
Another point arose however. Does anyone else have stability issues when battery drops below 25%? I am talking about some serious crash/reboot/lag/noradio issues.

Post 2.3.3 Upgrade Battery Life TERRIBLE

Upgraded to 2.3.3 on Thursday night, chose not to do a factory wipe so that I didn't have to reinstall apps etc. Since then I have had to charge the battery twice and have lost 50% battery in last 10 hours (whilst not using phone).
Is anyone else experiencing this problem ?
50% in ten hours doesnt seem that bad to me?
i use mine at work listening to music via BT headfones
make calls here n there and on my break times go on net and play games
and when i come home from work im on about 50% batt level
Nope updated in the morning after around 12 hrs I got 38% left

You obviously missed the "whilst not using the phone" bit. 50% after a days use with BT on etc I would be more than happy with.
This was without using the phone at all, no Bluetooth, no GPS, no music playing it was just sitting on a table, untouched.

I have updated and have not noticed this problem. Phone 100% battery went to bed. Got up this morning 8 hours later and battery 98%.
What is in the running apps menu? Do you have a task killer? they have been known to rape batterys when auto killing. The update was supposed to have improved battery usage so this is strange.

No task killers, not found them necessary for a long time.
I agree this update is supposed to improve battery life, which is why I was a bit surprised to see it eating it's battery like my old X10 did on 1.6 when I first got it.
Crispyduckling, I thought it was playing with something else that made you go blind
yes but i dint really want to go into that on here
i usually save that sort of topic for spankers monthly ...ahem
