Need some troubleshooting help - Acer Iconia A500

After flashing, bricking, re-flashing my a500 it has developed a bug that I need some help in tracking down.
It will not connect to any wifi network, it just keeps going from:
Obtaining IP Address from xxx
Disconnected...
Scanning...
Connecting...
Obtaining IP Address from xxx
(wash, rinse, repeat)
(i've tried several different wifi networks, including tethering to my phone, no joy)
I know there must be logs somewhere that I can look at to find out what is happening but where??

nm, google search ftw.
this thread had the solution Thread
Basically, use the reset button next to the USB port, took me three resets to get it working...

PC, WiFi, PPC, IP solution?

OK so after having problems connecting my XDA2s to my laptop via wifi to use it's ADSL connection, I began to realise it was a major issue for a lot of users.
Having covered almost all the threads here regarding PPC WiFi issues, I still am perplexed as to how the whole thing is successfully set up.
I concluded that it was virtually impossible; that the PC would not provide the PPC with an IP address so I would have to use some sort of application to manage the connection. However, yesterday for some reason only the omnipotent holy deities of the grandiose gods of WiFi would know, I had it working perfectly. For about 10 minutes, until I decided to disconnect to see if I could readily re-connect. My hopes were of course, dashed, and I have not had it working again since.
I have tried every combination of settings on both the laptop and the XDA to no avail, and have followed more threads and links than I can count on my fingers and toes. I've tried all the same settings I had when it was working (briefly) but still have no real success.
So basically, what's the deal with getting this damn thing working? Maybe what I need is a step by step idiot's guide on how to initially set up the wireless network on the laptop first, to make sure it has all the right settings? I'm using a Vaio running XP home (built in WiFi).
Has anyone completely resolved this problem yet? I would really like a solid, clean method of setting up the connection rather than stumbling through a million different combinations of settings and ending up with something hashed and unstable.
Many thanks for any help on this, I'm sure it's a tiresome subject for many.
......And as is always the case, as soon as you post about it you figure it out!
If anyone is still having trouble using their XDA2 to connect to a PC's ADSL via WiFi, ive got it figured!
RE: ive got it figured!
PLEASE HOW? I HAVE ALSO THE SAME PROBLEM HERE
THANKS
Me too. I have a XDA mini S.
I don't know what settings to put into the thing. I had it connected for a short while but when I went into internet explorer it started connecting to GPRS instead of WIFI to internet.
Clearly I haven't got a clue. The book is of no help either.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Think i'm connected to the internet. It doesm't seem to want a password although one is listed listed in the router. Just can't stop it going over GPRS instead of the wifi for intenet????
problem solved

Then soft reboot
change from use ip adress to "server assigned ip address"
soft reboot

[Q] Nook Color - Wi-Fi connected but can't add google account or browse web.

I just loaded phiremod 6.3 onto my Nook Color. When I attempt to add my google acount, I get "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server." When I click on the market app, I get "Could not launch the requested activity." When I open the internet browser, I get "Web page not available."
I have a strong wi-fi signal that my computer, cell phone, and another Nook Color are able to use without problems. The tablet says that I am connected, the signal is strong, and I'm not in airplane mode. I can't seem to find any posts that address the problem of not being able to add a google account AND not being able to browse the web with a solid wi-fi connection.
This is my first post so let me know if I put this in the right category and if I need to add any additional information.
Thanks in advance.
I thought this might be a problem with the newly released phiremod 6.3 because my device was working just fine on 6.2. However, I just flashed back to 6.2 and experienced the same problems. I can't make sense of this especially since the device is successfully connecting to the wi-fi.
Have you verified that if you reboot a PC on the same wireless network it works properly? Could your router have run out of available IP addresses? Possibly not handing out DHCP properly? Maybe your DNS servers you have listed in the Router were down temporarily and your computer was using cached information previously. Several scenarios that could be valid here. I'd like to find out first if a PC on the same wireless, connected wirelessly, is working.
Also do you have MAC address filtering on the network? So you're connecting w/ no issues but not able to surf because it's blocked.
If you go to the admin GUI of the router do you see the NC in the DHCP client table after you are successfully connected to the WiFi network?
Good Luck, I'll try to think of any other things.

Thanks for your reply Deltabear.
I share a wireless connection with my apartment landlord so I don't have access to the actual router. However, I can tell you that his computer is the only other one that uses it, and only for a few hours during the day. I rebooted my pc, and it's having no problems with the wireless connection. I rebooted my other Nook Color, and it too has no problem with the wireless connection.
I just remembered that when I loaded phiremod 6.2 it connected to the wi-fi. Then I experienced a boot loop when I tried to flash 6.3. I still have no idea what went wrong when I flashed 6.3, but everything went downhill from there. I ended up trying to revert back to stock, but instead of a bootloop at "Touch the future of reading" I got stuck in a bootloop at the N. I performed the 8x method and received an OTA update, but remained in the bootloop. At this point I decided to just go back to trying to flash phiremod 6.3, and this time it worked...except for the wacky wi-fi problem.
When you go into settings>Wi-Fi settings Is the router listed with connected underneath it? Or does it keep saying 'connecting'?
If it says connected press the router name and it should bring up a box in the middle of the screen with
Status
Security
Signal Strength
Link speed
IP address
What does it say under each?
Well the problem seems to be resolved but I don't know how or why. I turned the Nook's wi-fi off, and when I turned it back on I was able to add my google account, browse the web, and open the market. I know turned the wi-fi off and on several times yesterday so I am still perplexed as to why it seems to be working now.
To answer your question DreamingWolf, the router always said it was connected. I don't remember what the info was for it when I was having the problem, but I know I looked at it a few times and nothing seemed unusual there...I am however a noob.

problem connecting to wireless

I have a network with a hidden SSID. today, I changed my google account password due to google telling me mt accounts was accessed from malaysia (....), so when I got home and turned on my tablet, it prompted me to re-sign in. except I forgot the new password. so I hit home and pulled up the browser, at which point it disconnects from wifi. and I couldnt get it to reconnect or see my network. I reboot, nothing. So I changed the password on my macbook, which works fine on the same wifi.
then i tried to connect on the tablet again, nothing. so i deleted the network from the tablet, then re entered it. nothing. so i changed the configuration on the router so it wasnt hidden. it does now appear in my tablet's list of visible networks, starts to connect, says obtaining ip address, then disconnects and tries again.
any ideas? fyi my android phone is working fine.
It's a well known issue, though with all the 3.1 update threads lately, it's been pushed off the front page.

thanks for that, one of the people in those topics said using the reset button worked so i tried that and it did. got the newest OTA too, hopefully that has a fix for this. if not, i also downloaded superuser, TB and Android terminal emulator, so i'll have those as options for a fix if it happens again.
of course, i'll need to be rooted to use them, so is there any way to root on 3.1 yet? gingerbreak is broken, I know that cause I just tried.
Yes, there's a thread on it in the dev section. It was rooted about 20 minutes after it was released.
Well it looks like the OTA didn't fix it because it just happened again. So I tried the reset and that worked this time too. Come on Acer, you can do better.
The OTA patch didn't work fully for me either...
Every once in a while when changing WiFi's (work to home, home to a friend's house, etc...) it'll not find the Access point name and disable that connection. I have to turn off Wifi and then turn it back on before anything will connect or search...
I still have the path where to delete the .lease file so I continue to check for that.
The .lease file has not been there the last two times, but connecting is still an issue.
Fortunately, it's a simple thing to turn off WiFi and then Turn it on again and then Ask the connection to do it's thing...
..but yeah. Acer? A little help over here...
I'm stuck.
I soft reset my A500 four times in a row with no luck, so I went ahead and rooted the thing to delete the lease file as mentioned in other posts, and as it turns out I didn't even have a dhcpd_wlan0.lease file in /data/misc/dhcp -- I had no files in that directory at all.
I don't want to deal with a factory reset, but if I do, I'm still sunk because I have no lease file to delete to fix my problem in the future, since that seems to be not my problem.
Running 4.010.13_com_gen2, updated yesterday I think to this version, went to work, everything was great, got home, nothing is great.
Any other ideas besides a factory reset?
Static IP's FIX this issue.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Returning to work has fixed my issue temporarily anyway -- I am connected once again on my work network. I will shut down before I leave for home and see if that allows me to connect to my home network again.
After which, static IP is the way for me, I s'pose.
Thanks!
setting the static IP worked immediately for me as well. I found a great guide for any users who are unfamiliar with how to do this.
Step 1 is to know your lan network topography: ipconfig /all at a command prompt will give you your computer's IP address, as well as your host/gateway (usually a router). It also helps to know how to log into your router (usually the first octet in your IP range, eg. 192.168.1.1 is a router running DHCP, while your computer might be 192.168.1.4). Examine the IP range that the DHCP is assigning..often it is limited to a certain number of clients already, or you can do so yourself (I have mine set to hand out 10 IP's only via DHCP, while my actual LAN is manually assigned throughout).
Step 2 on the Acer is to open wifi connection properties and select your own network. The Properties Dialog will pop up, and right below Signal Strength, is says 'Network Setup, with a little marker for a dropdown. Select the marker/dropdown and click 'Manual'. Scroll down in the dialog, to IP settings, click the dropdown marker and select 'Static'. Plug in an IP address, subnet and Gateway (router) IP addresses..I left network prefix alone at 24. I also use custom DNS addys (OpenDNS) but you can also simply point them to your Gatewat/Router IP with no problems. Scroll back up and enter your Network Key for the level of encryption you're using on your WLAN, and you should connect right away, since we are no longer relying on the router's DHCP server (and the DHCP/IP assignment bug on the Acer), and once this is done, it will stay that way indefinitely.

I had issues pulling an IP connecting mine to my old router, so excluded part of the routers subnet from its dhcp scope and entered a static IP into the A500 for that connection and it has been working fine since.

San Francisco Wifi Problem - Obtaining IP Address

Hi Everyone,
really need some help. Made the step up to Froyo from Eclair and now I cannot connect to my BT Home Hub2.
It just keeps saying "Obtaining IP Address". I have tried resetting, static IP and random IP, airplane mode on and off again.
I just cannot get it working - even tried to the 2 apps that help fix ZTE Blade wifi.
Any suggestions?
Really need help. Thanks
Try change the security on your router to WEP from WAP
BT Home Hub 2 known issue, apparently:

BT Homehub/Android 2.2 Wifi solution
Hi all
Ive been searching for a solution for a fix for my HTC Desire on 2.2 which suddenly stopped connecting to my homehub wifi a few days ago. It would find the hub and recognise it..but would get stuck at obtaining the IP address...time out...and repeat the process without connecting.
It appears that BT have been rolling out a firmware update to their boxes that nobody was aware off! The bones of it is that your PC still connects fine but your smartphone doesnt. This leads you to think its an issue with the phone. It is not!
2.1 seems unaffected, but a percentage of 2.2 phones have had the issue. Ive spent three days on every android/htc forum under the sun and found no solution til i found a BT forum.
The new firmware needs a full system reset of your box to allow your Android 2.2 phone to reconnect to the internet. You simply locate the pinhole reset button and push. A normal hub reset doesnt do anything and neither does turning the box on and off at the plug
Its such a simple fix, but its not down on any of the forums. BT have been giving their usual 'service' to many and have not alerted anyone to this firmware issue. The same firmware issue is being rolled out the last six weeks and more people are having this frustrating issue.
Spread the word
Thanks

Wifi fails after being disabled

I used to think it was my WiFi would fail after enabling the hotspot feature. I now realize it fails simply by turning WiFi on and off. This happens 9 out of 10 times. When I re-enable Wifi, it connects to the SSID, and gets an IP address. It will not pass any traffic. No Internet apps work at all. The only fix I have found is to reboot the phone. I have tried various 'Wifi fix" apps, but nothing helped. They seem to renew the IP and disable/re-enable Wifi. This is a very annoying problem. Anyone else experience it? My phone is rooted running stock ROM with the debloat script that removed a bunch of junk. It has happened through all updates and Android versions as far as I can remember. I'm currently running the latest 5.0 courtesy of muniz_ri (thanks!)
Here is a little more info. It happened tonight. I was able to verify that it was actually online by pinging the S5 IP from my laptop. To make it even more confusing, it has some level of internet connectivity. I went to the Play store on my laptop, and initiated an install for a DNS troubleshooting app. My S5 apparently is able to get the instruction to download it, but it failed to actually download it. I was surprised it was even able to get the instruction.
I tried this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wahtod.wififixer&hl=en
I has verbose logging. It was trying everything you could possibly think of to 'repair' my wifif connection, but it failed as well. Rebooting always fixes it.
Any ideas?
