Samsung Epic Durability - Epic 4G General

So I have owned my Epic for just over 10 months. I flash, tweak, etc about as much as the average xDa user. I drop it infrequently; maybe once every week or two, mostly because I also have a toddler who loves taking my phone and doing god-knows-what to it. I never placed a case or screen protector on it. Save for one small nick near the battery opening piece, my phone still looks and operates as if it were brand new. This was my first Sammy phone. Previously, I had the HTC Touch/Vogue and HTC PPC6700. It seemed that I took those phones to the shop at least once every two months for some sort of problem but I have never taken my Epic to the store once.
I have heard about the superior quality that Samsung brings to the table compared to other manufacturers, but I must say that I am very impressed.

I agree. This is the best phone I've ever owned. I did put an Otterbox on it with the screen protector because I am a little clumsy at times. But it runs great and never let's me down. I flash roms, tweeks and themes and have never had any problems. Kudos Samsung. In my opinion the Epic lives up to it's name.

In my opinion, dropping your phone "once every week or two" is frequent... not infrequent as you said
I have probably dropped my phone twice the entire time i've had it.

Excellent Quality
I couldn't agree more.
The Epic is my first "smartphone" and first experience with Android.
My phone before the Epic was actually a smaller, less-powerful version: the Samsung Rogue for Verizon Wireless. That was the first phone of its kind (in the USA) to sport Samsung's AMOLED screen tech. I was really happy with that phone, so when I upgraded to the Epic, I was over the moon. It was new, yet familiar.
I constantly flash ROMs and root and tweak the phone. I've had it since March and its still looking and running like new. Samsung really stepped their game up!

I have never dropped my phone, but when I'm charging my phone, my dog runs in the house and jumps on me and pulls the cable around the house with my phone connected to the cable. Not a single scratch on the screen with no screen cover. My girlfriend has occasionally dropped it from tables, my bed, her hand, and still no scratches. This phone is high quality. The screens on these phones have a coat of something that should be on every phone. I had a palm pro, and that screen would get scratches from anything.

Lol I take that back. It isn't that often. Maybe once every two weeks, which I guess may still be frequent to some ;-)

My epic got accidently punted out of my hand into a brick pillar then crashed to the concrete ground.
Battery cover popped off, and only minor scratches on the casing. Phone still works perfect and everything held up fine.
It may "feel" light and cheap but this phone is a beast
I'm completely satisfied
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

My friends see first hand how durable the epic is lol
I'm ALWAYS drpping it. Same with my hero before this.
My epic has a scratch on the screen in the middle that it got like a week after I got it somehow so my saying became "gorilla glass my ass" and my phone flies out my lap and stuff and never got a dent or any other scratch anywhere...not even the chrome ring.
I'm very satisfied with the build quality, sans that damn gorilla glass. I woulda put a screen protector if I knew it'd get a scratch outta no where.

My 2 complaints:
1: The top half of the phone scrapes the keyboard, scratching the hell out of it. My old HTC Touch Pro 2 never ever showed scratches on the keys
2: Over time (a few months) the hinge gets sloppy, so the top half of the phone wobbles. This is the 2nd Epic I've had that did it. The only one that didn't (I'm on my 3rd), I only had for a few days, so it never got the chance.
And yes, I open & close the phone a lot, which would cause both issues.
EDIT: And yeah, I have a scratch on the screen that I have NO CLUE where it came from. I must have gotten the dying gorilla.

Carry your keys in the same pocket as your phone, and your screen will have "don't know where it came from scratches". I learned the hard way with my past phones and the screen remains blemish-free. I did drop the phone several times at least, including on concrete - several marks on chrome bezel but works just as it did new. Not a scratch on my keys either and hinge working perfectly.

had the phone since the first day. i work in construction and stopped using a case after a month. i have 2 tiny scratches on my screen (i mean REALLY tiny) and a slightly dinged up case. durability has not been an issue

I had my first epic run over by a car, screen up and the screen was perfect. Amazing. Much other abuse, this thing is a tank.
Second epic I dropped for the first time outside on the sidewalk and it cracked my screen the first drop.
Far better built than it seems at first, and scratch resistant. However all it takes it one drop at the wrong angle, and it's toast.
All in all, very happy with it!
Oh and I love best buys "black tie protection plan"

Dropped mine from about 4.5 feet it landed perfectly flat on the screen with no case and had a screen protector on.(not that I think a screen protector does anything for drops) The screen got all busted up but other than that have had really good luck with my phone.

This things a beast... Dropped my old one on tar and it was fine... And it flung down... But ive never dropped the one i have now... I baby this thing lol.
Edit-hope the gs2 is the same way

Yea it does feel cheap compared to HTC phones but it is tough. I have dropped mine hard a few times on concrete and pavement but it is still working fine.

I remember before the evo, htc was considered garbage and having crap build quality. I always disagreed because my hero lasted for so long. I dropped it in the train tracks while in the subway, and that was atleast an 8 foot drop, and all it had on it was a scratch under the endcall button. The screen was perfect, and didn't even have gorilla glass! After the year, the call and end buttons lost their covering and I had a big green button and a big red button and the screen had no markings at all...
This phone has gorill glass and gets a random ass scratch 2 weeks into owning it. And I don't even carry my keys in my pants! I always put my phone in its own pocket. Its like a blunt, if you don't give it its own pocket,it'll get all messed up.
But other than that I'm satisfied, like I said in my previous post

Any sand, even a single grain can scratch the screen because it's silica which is harder then the glass. I got two teeny scratches from residue of sandy dirt that got in my pocket with my phone.
But this phone is tough, it took my gf 8 months to mess hers up. She drops her phone CONSTANTLY, pretty much any phone she buys is usually destroyed in a couple months. After dropping hers on hard floors, sidewalks, tile, having it skid across parking lots for a long time the screen cracked but still worked fine.

The "I dropped my phone" Thread

So I have had my phone for about 5 days now but yet I have yet to drop it. I was wondering who all here has dropped there phone. Please share your experience. I feel like the screen would snap of the z hindge if you drop it
Whoops, hit submit too early.
I've yet to drop mine, but I have a sturdy hinge so I'm not concerned about that. But I do keep a firm grip so it doesn't fall. I like how heavy it feels but I'm afraid that weight will hurt it if and when it drops.

Y do people always have phones over sinks or tubes full of water? If u need to cook or wash dishes use a headset. And using a headset will stop wet hands from touching the phone. I dont even touch my phone if my hands r wet or dirty(i work on cars so car dirt, old, grese is what I mean)
But I havnt dropped mines. I treat it like a grande if I drop it or dont hanlde it right itll blow

dropped mine on the sidewalk - it literallly tried to spear itself into the sidewalk on one of the top corners w/most of the impact on the screen half of the phone.
luckily i had just gotten my body glove case cover a few days before - it left a flat spot on the corner of the case but the impact was severe enough i was concerned about damage to the screen or hinges - none found

I think the people that keep advertising sturdy hinges just have lower standards or are in denial lol. Pics or it didn't happen.. It may be slightly STURDIER than other G2 phones... but even the weakest G1 hinge is sturdier than the sturdiest G2 hinge.
I have had mine for a couple of weeks now, and dropped it for the first time a few days ago onto a blacktop parking lot. I have a cast on my right hand from surgery and cant use it all for the time being. So i was getting out of my car and trying to get my keys in my pocket and phone in the correct hand and just dropped it. Instinctively i tried to catch it with my casted hand to no avail. It landed face down. I was able to wipe/scratch off the small black pavement scratches on two corners, but i do have a tiny nick in the coating on the glass that is small but noticeable. Any way to buff that out?
Phone was in the hands of a friend with the charger plugged into the wall, I put my leg down and inadvertently yanked the the cord which sent the phone flying from her hand onto the tile floor. I didn't notice any damage at the time, but as I inspected my phone after reading this thread I noticed a few small gashes in the rubberized coating on the bottom left corner.
Will post a pic later for the bloodthirsty deviants here seeking carnage.
Dropped it twice the same day 2 weeks after I got mines, since I was using an Ipod touch belt holder case at first (Worked good the first day I tried it). Got worried but at both drops I had no problems. I did notice a very tiny scratch on the bottom right corner of the phone (Hardly noticeable).
A third drop was this past Sunday at the Theaters (While Watching a Movie), no problems either.
Today I got my G2 Case so even better protection. And besides I have a 2 year warranty that covers drops/Spills.
Overall the phone is pretty solid when it comes to small drops.

Had it a couple of weeks before I got out of my car and forgot the phone was still in my lap. By the time I did remember, it was too late. Couldn't catch it in time. Now I have nicks on the side, smh. Real deep, ugly marks.
First day I had it, sept. 29, my friend I was showing it to dropped it from about 5 feet straight onto concrete. The top right had a rough scratch, both the front bottom rubberized corners had some damage, and the lower edge under both of the shift keys felt rough. Oh and the battery cover got scratched too. Needless to say I called and complained about my hinge and they sent me a new one free of charge. No pics though sorry

my little cousin dropped my g2 while it was in its nexus one case.. all it left was a little nick on the upper right hand corner of the metal. the worse part for me now is the fact that tmobile screwed up my bill by charging me full price for my 2nd replacement phone plus my old installment of my first g2 instead of canceling the 1st g2 payment plan and putting me on a new one so now they are sending me a new phone (which is good i guess) but i have to send back this phone. do you guys think they will notice? should i tell them?
btw ive had 4 g2's due to random restarts so this is my 4th g2 (not including the new one they have to send) and so my battery cover has some scratches nothing too noticeable though.

Nexus S Build Quality

I love my Nexus s. While it isn't covered with glass or aluminum this phone can stand a beating. For a year and a half I've had my nexus while my friends around me have dropped and cracked iPhone screens left and right.
People might not like it because of the plastic-y feel, but if my phone can shake off a direct face fall off of the top bunk onto hardwood flooring I am a very happy guy. Congrats Samsung! Thanks for making an amazing phone still going strong today! Any stories of endurance you guys care to share?
Can't count the number of times I forgot the phone was on my lap, stood up and heard that THUD that stops your heart, only to see that it's perfectly fine
Mines fell more than once. Most damage is on the battery cover(scratches), with a new back cover my phone might be close to mint. Using a case mostly now with no screen cover.

I also dropped my phone quite a few times, yet no dents were found.
Only small scratches on the back cover, which were probably caused by me getting my phone in & out of my pocket.
Yes, it's plastic, but it's quite durable in my opinion.
After having my Nexus S for over an year, it's still as good as new. It only has a few almost invisible scratches on the back cover.
I haven't dropped the phone yet, but the PO dropped it a few times, as there are dents on the body, but nothing out of the ordinary. EVERY person I know with an iPhone has a cracked screen. Hahaha. I like my NS, but I still say HTCs builds are a bit more rugged. It was just weird coming from a G2, which is much heavier, to a thinner and much lighter phone.
i'd say samsung makes phones with the highest build quality but design/premium feel goes to htc.

1 time. Luckily the bumper protected my device, then wasn't damaged
10+ times. Not a scratch on it. I only have screen protector, no bumper or anything.
It has fallen onte wooden floors, concrete floors, tarmac etc..
Really good quality I'd say.

1 time in my holiday in Thailand. Fell down exactly on a sharp edge of a small stone. Crack'n Cry
But: Samsung service center in Udon Thani repaired the display and even put in a new motherboard within three days. Great service and unbeatable price.
one time on the carpet from 2 feet, almost had a heart attack! no problems at all
Twice. Once on the concrete and once on asphalt. Got a couple of tiny marks on the bezel, so nothing special.
Bought on 20th Jan, ZERO drops.
Probably because I quit alcohol.
Probably once or twice a day, thats nearly 180 falls, I'm really clumsy and distracted, but with TPU case and screen shield it's intact...
I should count my throws, when drunk I throwed it twice already at someone who made fun of his size, no problems yet thankfully, really nokia build quality comparable.

Three or four times. In all of them, but one, my Note was protected by bumper. Not a single scratch, so far
I've dropped mine a few times and all has been fine as it's in a Tridea case and the phone is fully covered, but one time last month I took it out if the case to change the battery and dropped it on to concrete.... the one time it's out of the case and I drop it!

SGS3 not so fragile

Just wanted to say that I've noticed a lot of posts saying how fragile the SGS3 is, now I don't know if I'm lucky or if those who's s3s have broken are just unlucky but I've had an awful lot of accidents with mine the past few weeks, including dropping it on hard concrete from my ear (about 5 foot 9 inches) a few times, dropping it down the stairs, dropping it onto a bedside lamp that I'd places in the floor during a sort out (my S3 actually smashed the lamp stand lol).
The only problem with my S3 is 2 small scratches on the bezel.
So is the S3 so fragile afterall or am I just lucky?

I agree, this thing is hardcore. I went to sit in my friends car, as I was sitting I was closing the door and my phone fell out of my pocket and shut the phone in the door. I was wtf just happened. Then the phone fell to the ground when I opened the door. The stock battery got twisted and battery cover was scratched. I turned it on everything worked, no scratches on the screen. Two hours later my case came in the mail. I ended up buying two qcell batteries from Amazon.com. I was able to straighten the battery out a bit. That thing still works...
I don't think you're lucky, just a really nice device...

I have never thought a mobile phone may survive from several feet falling, but I would not expect my phone cover material crack after several months usage. I have noticed that these posts have been started a month ago, and not seen so much post complaint the same issue. Just hope it is only some sort of manufacture defect batch, otherwise this is major headache for Samsung according to the production size of Galaxy S3.
Well I am liable for a direct exchange via courier anytime I want as long as I only do it once, so I'm waiting until I find the right case and screen protector for me then I'll do the exchange and have a scratch-free phone.
I also have a few small scratches on the screen that were caused by sand when I was on holiday.

why am I seeing so many cracked screens on ebay and among friends?
I'm just curious, because I am considering getting a GS3 and I have seen firsthand quite a few with cracked up screens, not quite as bad and the iphone folks, but I don't want to get another phone that is going to break on me without even dropping it.
I was walking out to roll up my windows and went to put my phone, without the case on it, in my shirt pocket and I missed the pocket and there it went.. smacked the concrete landing on I believe the top right corner and mostly the back side.. The back battery cover is all scratched up but no big deal.. I immediately put my otterbox commuter case on it like I should have had on anyways.. now believe it or not, I used it the rest of that day and till about 3pm the next day and I was just scrolling down my Facebook news feed when I felt my phone click.. I started looking at it like whaattt? Well, whataya know? My screen I guess finally gave in and a crack formed across the upper right quarter of the screen. From the LED Indicator to the Power Button.. The Digitiser and LED seem ok though. Just seemed odd to crack like that kind of outta nowhere like it did. Maybe my case caused some pressure on my weakened screen after dropping it and the screen just gave up? I've seen things like that happen before but not like this.

I've dropped mine 4 times from my pocket onto concrete and can't count the times I've fell asleep and dropped it out my hand and all I've got is a few scratches on the $4 TPU case.
I'm not sure if anyone else does this, but if you're agile enough, try to get your foot under the phone before it hits the ground to cushion the blow... I know I've saved the phone on quite a few occasions by doing this!

Times you dropped your phone (possibly in water) and it was totally ok

So,
I've dropped my NS4G countless times, and twice into water fully submerged. I freaked out every time, and when it was in water I wiped it dry and checked the battery water-indicator. Nothing, no change, no damage. This phone is a beast when it comes to physical trauma at least for me.
Anyone wanna share their stories? Or maybe horror stories of how easily it broke.
I'd say that was pure luck. My Sony Xperia Play digitizer stopped working after I applied wet screen protector (never going to use those again).
But the Galaxy S and its variants are one of the most durable phones by Samsung, it has gone downhill since. I would not recommending dropping an S3.

I'll keep that in mind my dad just picked up the S3, he's lookin at Otter cases though .
My phone fall from around 1 meter into concrete, the top left corner was the first to hit the ground.. I got some marks on the plastic but that's it. Fortunately nothing major happened, although my heart stopped for a second when I saw it falling xD

I've only dropped my NS4G once. Standing up in the restroom it fell out of my pocket onto the tile floor. No damage, but probably due to the TPU case I was using that day.
However, being in the consumer electronics retail workforce, I can honestly say that I've installed over 200 invisible shields on phones and tablets. Out of those, only one damaged the product. Wouldn't you know it, it was a friend's phone, but it was also about 2 years old at the time and had been dropped, therefore the edges of the screen were no longer sealed. Since she paid for the service the store replaced her phone.

I went swimming with my Nexus S back in July. I was is the water 10-15 minutes before I realized it was in my pocket.
Once I realized my stupidity, I went in and laid my Nexus S on a towel with the cover off and the battery out. I let it bake in the sun for about 4 hours then put it back together. It has worked great ever since.
I was actually a little disappointed. I thought this would be my excuse to get a Galaxy Nexus. Nope, can't find any excuses to get rid of my Nexus S Great phone!

I dropped mine in the toilet XD I was doing number one and was playing music. I was really into the song and didn't wanna pause it and put it in my pocket so I just held it between my shoulder and my cheek but then I dropped it lol. I quickly put my hand in the toilet to get it out, washed it THOROUGHLY and put it in a cup with rice. Everything was fine except for the speaker. 24 hrs later it fixed itself though
Survived a torrential downpour.
Day 1: it charged but didn't indicate it was charging with charger, no USB functionality.
Day 2 indicated it was charging with charger - no USB functionality After 3 days it was fully functional.

had my nexus s 4g drop from... oh Id say 35 feet onto a metal nob. no- it did not survive. But I gotta say the glass is super thick, so thought the screen might have made it, but nope. $190 ebay bucks later and Im back with my NS4G
I dropped my Nexus S a couple of times from jeans pocket height unto rough garage floors. Aside from minor nicks and scratches in the bezel, phone still functions normally.
Oh yeah and I'm disappointed as well for not getting my excuse to get a GNex.

Dropped twice into water
Dropped once and then took it out of water, very scared, and then pulled off the battery. Use a cold hair dryer for 30 minutes to dry it. Turned it on. Some weird functionality. No Speaker phone, no phone speaker phone.
Left the phone hopeless but tomorrow it was ok!
Nexus S is a beast!
