SD Slot - Thrive General

Was really looking into buying one of these but had a question regarding the full size SD slot. Is it SDHC or SDXC? Because Engadget says it's SDXC but Toshiba & other places just say SD. Asking because if SDXC I could just grab the 8GB version & buy a 64GB SDXC card & still come out cheaper than buying the 16 or 32GB models & when they come down in price maybe go up to a 128GB card.

I wouls still buy the 16GB version due to the inability to move apps to the SD on tablets, but as for cards, it has been verified that you can use all the way up to 128GB. Hope that answers you question.

Oh A2SD doesn't work? I thought that was a function built into the Android OS. So is that something inherent to the Honeycomb OS or just this tablet? Oh well 8GB should be more than enough. How much is usable after the OS? I mean I have like 50 apps installed on my Evo 3D & at one point had almost 70 on my Evo 4G and that was without A2SD.

When Honeycomb was created, they changed the mount points of the external memory. That is why A2SD does not work. The developers could fix this, but my guess they will wait until Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) comes out. This will unify the OSs on phones and tablets meaning ony one port to make it work on both.
If you have that many apps loaded on your phones and have no issue, you should be fine with the tablet, but there are specials going on that offer the 16GB for $409.00. Not much more then the 8GB version. Have fun.

Well I finally took the plunge and got a Thrive! Couldn't be happier. Bought a 16GB version at Best Buy for $479.99 then 2 days later they were advertising it for $429.99. So I called them up and they said all I had to do was bring in reciept to get the difference because it was within 14 days. So I got my $50 back & used it to buy the Multi Dock! This thing rocks! Smooth as butter, no lags anywhere. And with the my 32GB Class 10 I have plenty of room. Maybe when the 64GB or 128GB comes down in price I'll hop on one of them. But I couldn't be happier. Be even better when the dev community starts jumping off.

A friend of mine just got one off eBay and it was actually a 2gb with a 3 stamped on it. The card read as a 32 then only held 2. The seller played dumb and my friend got a refund less shipping and handling.

Wow, at least he got a refund. So they are stamping 3's on 2 gb cards and calling them 32? What's the point of that when there's a huge difference in storage? Most people get 32 cards because they need the space. Ill be testing mines as soon as it gets here.

I can attest to this. I stupidly did the same thing, fully aware that scamming was going on but thought I might get lucky. Anyway, I managed to get a full refund including postage but it'll be the last time I buy a card from an unknown seller.

Why don't you wait until the SD card slot is enabled on the Xoom before buying it since the price will probably go down by then.
I recently got a 16GB Class 6 from Ebay for my phone and it turned out it was corrupt and then when I looked at the Kingston site, they didn't manufacture any class 6 cards, only 4 and 10...
from memory when reading around the site I've seen recommendations for SanDisk/ADATA cards...
any more recommendations on good manufacturers?
The only time I got screwed was when I bought a 2GB SD card on eBay but it turned out to be only 1GB. They even fake the labels so from now on it's only amazon or NewEgg for me! I have ADATA, SanDisk, and Transcend microSD cards and they work just fine with the Nook Color.
Through my channels the only decent 32 GB cards I found were through Lexar, class 10. I should receive a pair of them today, they were $97 via CDW.
There were other 32 gig cards, but class 2/4 and nearly the same price.
New Lexar card is working in my EVO, loaded it up with all the data off of the previous 16 GB card I had before. Looking forward to using the SD card slot in the Xoom as soon as it is enabled.

Lexar? I'll look into that, I have a good one now from Memorette. It's been awesome this past week.
Why don't we use sandisk since all manufacturers seem to supply our phones with sandisk card. I mean, it's better than risking and waiting. The they're roughly the same price anyways

i only use Sandisk. Lexar is not a brand i would use personally.
i plan to get it direct from verizon with my 25% discount. they are more expensive at VZW but they are guaranteed the real deal and no issues. plus verizon have local stores so i can get support locally should anything go wrong.

Check Craigslist in your area - friend of mine was able to pick one up for $75 recently.
I'm an Audio Visual Technician and always have to purchase SD cards for clients when doing digital recording...A while ago I had purchase 3 Sandisk 32GB Micro SDs for cost price ($85 w/free shipping) along with 3 Sandisk CF 16GB Extreme IVs for my Canon 5D Mark2 at $150 a piece...
never had any problems with any Sandisk products so I tend to stick to them...but it always comes down to personal preference in the end...that's why we all got the XOOM instead of the [email protected]

Why not? I have personally used Sandisk, Kingston, Lexar, and I'm sure a few other major brands, and have not noticed a difference between them during use.
I have found them to be equally reliable, assuming you are purchasing them from a reputable supplier.

The Dilemma: 32GB vs 16GB

I just got my second 32GB TF (first one stopped responding to touch, even after hard reset) and this one has dust under the screen and light bleed...(I was a naysayer..but the problems are REAL and not just some over exaggeration).
Anyway...I'm going to return the 32GB to BHPhoto...and managed to order a 16GB from Amazon today.
I still have some time to cancel and was debating...is the 16GB the right call? I've had the 32GB until now (since it was easier to get) and it was kind of nice knowing I had that space if I ever needed it...but do I NEED it? I realize the 16GB is expandable due to MicroSD, but onboard is always better.
How do you guys feel about the storage space?
I honestly think 16gb is a better choice as you're very unlikely to install so many apps to eat up that much space.. and you can the $100 ultra to get a decent 32gb micro sd card!
I do wish you would make up your mind with your 'stories', because over on another thread you had already bought a tab 10'1 in NY and there's no mention of also ordering another AT from Amazon.
I wish people would just piss-off and stop blatantly inventing ways to post BS stories on this forum about this freaking awesome device

That's not true.
If you ever want to move files from device to device all you have to do is pop out the card on one device and into another.
I would hate to wait for 16GB worth of data to be moved through USB.
The biggest files are media files so if you plan on keeping a lot of movies on your tablet at one time, then the bigger storage is probably best.
Though, the way we are headed, everything will be streamed/downloaded through cloud anyway.

I personally bought the 16 GB because the 32 GB was sold out @ BB. I figured that I could always expand my memory via micro SD.
to me it doesn't make a ton of sense to add more onboard memory when expansion is possible, cheaper and more convenient
16GB unless you really have tons of music/movies that you want to carry with you all the time. I already have a 32gb iPhone4 so I have no reason to store my music on the tablet. 16GB more than enough.
I personally went for the 32. Unlike a phone, the microSD and SD cards are accessible. I plan to use those like floppy drives of today. It's much faster to copy media directly to the cards from a computer and stick them into the pad than to try to sync or copy them via the pad. At one point, I was thinking that I can just upgrade. However, there will always be some apps that cannot be moved to the microSD.
Also, Amazon currently has the 32 for $499 and 16 for $449. $50 difference for onboard 16 is a no brainer.
I just bought a 16gb with the same mentality as some of the previous replies. I went with the cheaper alternative knowing that I could easily upgrade the storage with a Micro SD card if I started running out of space.

Does not follow that it is better. 48 may be more then 32 but it is less then 64. You don't think that people that buy the 32 gb model are then going to say "Aw I don't need a 32 gb Micro SD card, I have more then enough internal already". No they are going to say "I wish they had 64gb Micro SD card I can put in this thing".

I see you've edited your post how errrrr predictable! but then i see you edit a lot of your posts
Given Google music, and rentable movies that either stream or delete themselves after you watch them, I think Steve Jobs is on the right track. I have WiFi 95% of the places I go. 100% of the time on work days. With the Google music beta I have no music ON my tablet, but access to my entire collection with a network connection. The 16gb tablet has room for several movies, but once netflix and android market movies are fully functional I don't see the point of even bothering to rip a DVD into a format that will play. My conclusion? 16gb saved me $50 or more over the 32gb version. That pays for netflix for 6 months or so.
Got the 16gb, and got a 32GB microsd at 90$ (patriot 32gb class 10) looks great
If you really (x10) need memory, go for the 32GB model, otherwise, the 16GB model will do just fine.

I even included the reason I edited it. If you look at the post I linked to...it was NOT edited.
Let's think about what you accused me of (starting a post about getting a tab 10.1). Was that me? No.
I decided to keep the 16gb from Amazon. External storage is all I need. Do any of the current folio cases have pockets to hold micro SD cards?
Problem with going low and using cards is it's a pain to maintain a desktop like atmosphere if I have some on board and some on a card and swap cards for something else and need access to what was on the other card. I have a mydocs folder under mysugarsync folder and sync it with my home computer. Considering a majority of my files are media/Office based, and mt TF replaced my laptop, I have a more complete setup without having to swap cards. I also had a bunch of gift cards and paid about $300 for the 32gb after returning the 16gb one so it wasn't a tough choice. I like card access, but swapping cards more often is not really my idea of efficient. Plus the slots are always open for use. Still wish the tablet had full size SD. Hate the trend towards micro on devices that have no justification for it. Considering the TF is wider than any other 10.1 with nothing else really under the hood in comparison, a full size SD should have been a no brainer.

According to other members, Sandisk class 2 is one of the best for NOOK, 4GB seems to be low (the ROM itself - /system - doesn't take that much) for storage but you actually have at least 1GB on eMMC or potential 5GB (if v1.1 or re-partition)
uSD = µ for microSD
Extensive testing, many MicroSD purchases later, and near a dozen SanDisk MicroSD cards says that this link:

Sweet! Thank you, mine is already on it's way.
I know you'll like it - it's great to be able to take the guesswork out of finding something that works so well.
These cards were originally found by user busyworked, and he put quite a bit of research into tracking down model numbers to locate these specific cards.
The original post is Here.
One of the things that makes this community so fantastically great, is the amount of work that people put into this stuff on their spare time. By keeping the record straight for who found (or did) what, we can keep building on that knowledge without crossing the same ground. It's also great to make sure the right people get credit for what they've done.
I'd hate to take credit for anothers discovery, just want to make sure others know how much effort he put into finding that gem of a card. I didn't have enough time earlier to link the post, but the shopping link was a shortcut on my desktop and quick to call up.

I got this card but it came "oem" No packaging and couldn't tell if it was new. It wasn't described as oem in packaging from Etech, very annoyed by this.
Keep your fingers crossed that it isn't a counterfeit.
Yeah, I hope it works when mine arrives too.
Sent from my NookColor using XDA Premium App
I have one of these, it outperforms every other card i've been able to get my hands on.
Forget what the packaging was like when it came in, but shipping was quick.
It's marked in the same fashion as another SanDisk (8 gig class 4) card I bought at Radio Shack.
My 8 gb sandisk from etech was in new retail packaging.
My 16 gb sandisk from etech was OEM (no package, no nothing for that matter).
The 16 gb sandisk seems to work just fine, I've had it for about a week and a half on my nook color as it's primary sd card with emmc with cm7.
After thinking about it more deeply, my 16gig card came in just the small plastic case with a full sized sdcard adapter, no original packaging.
I run my OS from the card, not emmc, and it is fantastically better then other microsd cards i've used.
It doesn't bother me that it wasn't advertised about the packaging, but I can certainly see how some(probably most) people would be ticked about it. I concede without question the legitimacy of the argument.
I defray the idea that the card may have been previously used by the amount of business the company does. I think they pump more volume out then they could keep track of an 'employee loaner program' or whatever.
At least this thread has borne out this fact, so we can say buyer beware of the packaging issue.
That said, it's still the best MicroSD card we know of - unless some of the people researching the "operating system from MicroSD" situation have some hidden gem they aren't talking about.
(I sincerely doubt this, it's like the complete opposite of the spirit of the place we are in...tantamount to committing sacriledge in a church or something)
Sorry, I didn't think to mention this.
Both 16gig cards I ordered from there came in OEM packaging, didn't seem like a big deal to me at the time.
I never considered any of the thoughts surrounding that revelation, or I would have made it known up front.
My apologies.
(still a rockin' card though)
I'm happy with mine. Can't beat the $17 Amazon/etech charged. Aside from the shipping envelope it came in, packaging looks just like I'd see it on the shelf at walmart...
Works great too!

I called BB in my area to see if they had gotten in any 32gb ones. No luck yet. She said they get in shipments every Tuesday and Thursday. No way to know if its on the truck KR not. So ill check back Tues. If they get the 32gb in, ill go up there and swap out my 16gb for it. I'd rather pay only $50 for double the memory vs. Apple charging $100 for double the memory. I can tell I need at meat 32gb. Regardless of memory card slot. Games and apps don't store data on memory cards anymore. So extra space is needed for my type of usage.

32GB/64GB Note 2 in UK?

Hi guys,
I currently have an S3 and I have a buyer for it, I will be buying the Grey Note II very soon. However, due to the large number of games I have and the increasing file sizes for game data (in particular gameloft games) I would like to go for the 32GB or 64GB version. It is very inconvenient to always run out of space and have to move game data to the SD card. With the size of phone games these days, 32GB really should be the new standard imo.
I already have a 64GB memory card so please don't tell me where I can purchase one of these. I want the Note 2 in Grey with 32GB or 64GB internal memory. Do they exist? Will they ever appear or am I likely to be waiting indefinitely?
Now the buyer for my S3 is getting impatient and he wants it ASAP. I could sell it and buy the 16GB grey Note 2 now, but if there is any news regarding the 32 or 64GB version I will hold out for a bit longer.
Any information would be most helpful.

~i have almost the same case here...but as far as i have heard...the 64 and 32 GIG versions are not gonna be out till after 2012 ends...
Samsung are just about to start releasing an S3 64gb. Doesn't bode well for seeing a Note II anytime soon.
They seem to use the extra memory to even out their sales further into the phone's life, rather than maximize them at launch. Bloody annoying really.

I have iPhone 5 and the N7100. The second is the best
Same boat except in Aus do I'll no doubt be waiting longer! so tempted to get 16gb but know I'll hate it later! Also don't you need a 'micro SD' card? Might do a search and see if there is a 'confirmed to work' 64gb card thread...

I ordered this: KINGSTON SECURE DIGITAL CLASS 10 SDXC 64 GB
I will update this thread once I pick it up at the post office today
I was in the same boat. I wanted the 64GB with 64GB microSD, but it is really unnecessary. To use that space you would need A LOT of movies on the phone. Movies etc can be streamed from your home computer via the Emit app. You can also use dropbox, so even 16+64GB is moooooooore then enough space.
Im one hoping for the release of the 64gb variant soon.
I think samsung have dropped the ball here.
Least the fruity phone manufacturer makes all memory size variants available from zero day

You guys confirmed what I already thought, I can see it being quite a wait until we see the 32GB and 64GB versions.
I've gone ahead and ordered the 16GB Grey Note II today. For those interested in the UK, this is the deal I got:
Grey Note II (FREE HANDSET)
300 Minutes
Unlimited Texts
1.5GB Internet
£27 Cashback.
£31 per month (T-Mobile)
24 Month Contract.
I ordered it today, it should be with me tomorrow.
Will it work one ee 4g network ?

I think we'll see 128GB microsdxc cards before 64GB Note II's...

No, the one I ordered is 3G.
Thing is, I do not intend to use 4G at all yet especially since we can be sure it will cost a fair bit on top of our contracts. I have also heard reports that the battery life takes quite a hit on 4G. By the time 4G is standard across the UK and we have coverage everywhere, I reckon I may have the Note 3 by then...
farfromovin - I agree with you, I think 128GB micro sd cards are literally just a few weeks away now.
If your thinking for waiting before buying the consensus is that is too long to wait for most. We are greedy. But it might still be a good idea as next week ee launch the lte version, this may affect the prices but come November network prices will definitely be affected. Combined you might save £50 in 30 days. This is all skeptical I know so let's say the EV is around £25 allowing for a fall in hype too.

It's funny you say that. I was thinking the same thing. I sure hope so. If this is the case I'd be willing to go that route. Not only is it more storage it's a more future proof solution. In fact the difference between a 16GB and 64GB note will probably be roughly equal to the difference between a 64GB card and a 128 GB card.
... here's hoping.
Got my Note II today, what a beast of a phone. Takes the best things from the Note I and the S3 and combines them, and improves it some. :good:
not sure note 2 would take 128gb sdcard as specs state upto 64gb?
Luckily those specs are often understated.

It can and will. My phone stated 32gb, but currently has a 64gb. Just format it in the phone.

The XC standard is supposed to be fixed regardless of memory size (up to a limit I forget) where the HC standard was different for each capacity. Wouldn't guarantee it but if 64 works then 128 (256, 512...) should be fine.

well you learn stuff all the time in here
ill be on the look out then as i wouldnt mind a large card for my hd films (and no its not porn ).
64gb doesnt seem to cut it for me
side note...the way these sdxc are increasing in size and cheapness on price i can see them maybe killing off usb sticks the way its going...boy are 64gb micro card small cant wait for 128gb ones.
