They can be used on HTC Android phones using 480x800 pixels screens.
You must have a rooted device with S-OFF.
I have tested this only on HTC Desire.

Theoretically, according to that tutorial to achieve a splash image that was originally a BMP, couldnt one A) resize the image to 480x800, B) convert the BMP into a PNG then C) follow the steps of the tutorial?
Pretty sure that would make the process relatively easy =)

Simply take your chosen image, open it in windows paint, and resize to 480x800 pixels. Make sure you then save it as a 24bit bmp.
Download and use Android Flasher, found here...

Never tried it. Looks like an elegant solution My sole purpose was to share those backgrounds I made. I'm sure there are a lot of ways to put them on your phone, one of which is the one I presented.

I tried to do it with Android Flasher, but somehow it doesnt recognise my phone nor does it find any files. So therefore I wanna give android sdk a try.

thanks for informing us of this procedure to change the splash screen. I had the 'joker' image from AlphaRev and I wanted to change it. The Android Flasher utility was not working for me. I like and am using the boot anim. A couple of q's though.
Does your boot anim use sound. I cant seem to get a boot sound.
Also downanimation.zip. I flashed downanimation but it doesnt do anything. When I reboot, or shutdown no animation is shown. Do I need to set up something else?

On the HTC Dream (G1...) it was possible to get rid of the very first boot image, that white screen with a steady HTC logo, with a flashboot command like the following (changing source img name $3 ):
fastboot flash splash1 splash.raw565
.....now...the obvious question....do we need a special SPL to do something like that on Desire?
I saw something in boot.img that could probably help in the process but my Droid skills are too basic to get an answer by myself.
Any idea on this?

2. To get adb running on the Windows OS platform, for example, download & extract the Android SDK to the following path: %SystemDrive%\android-sdk-windows (e.g. C:\android-sdk-windows)
3. Turn on your phone and connect it to your PC via a USB port.
4. Place the downloaded bootanimation.zip into the same folder as the adb app (in the tools folder of the SDK).
5. Open command prompt and type cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools, hit enter.

That is how to change "second" boot animation, but he wont's to change "first" bootanimation, the one with white background and green htc logo

You need the engineering SPL. Impossible to do otherwise.
So I need the piece of software everybody is waiting for...
HTC must be very proud of their logo if they make it so hard to get rid of it. Even boot messages would look better ;-)

Me too! There are guides and even a 1-click splash screen replacement application which is flippin' awesome. I've made my splash, but now to work on the boot animation so that the whole lot is seamless, right up until loaded.... watch this space.

I actually meant changing the 1st boot screen img, and for your information I read these forums every single day.
I gave up following xda for barked answers like that one... go see a shrink and be polite, or don't bother answer.
For the s-off question, it's a quite straight forward operation, I don't have time right now but I' ll make a step by step how to that I hope will help with doubts.

I was wondering about the very same thing a while ago. This is what I have learned:
TO BEGIN WITH, YOUR PHONE MUST BE S-OFF. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS THREAD IF YOUR PHONE ISN'T S-OFF.
In order to flash your custom splash1 image, prepare a *.BMP image with size corresponding to your device's display size (which in case of the Desire is 480x800). Make sure the image is in 24-bit color space (true colors), 16 or 32-bit images wont work.
When you have the image prepared, download a tool called NBIMG (you'll find it here on XDA). Put your image and nbimg.exe into the same directory, open up command prompt and then navigate to the folder where you've placed the files. I'll use c:\nbimg as an expamle.
To convert the image to the smartphone format, issue the following commands:

nbimg.exe -F mycustomimage.bmp -w 480 -h 800
This will create mycustomimage.bmp.nb file. If you want to be sure everything went alright, convert this file back to *.bmp format by using this command:

nbimg.exe -F mycustomimage.bmp.nb -w 480 -h 800
This will create mycustomimage.bmp.nb.bmp. Open this file and compare it to your original image. If the images match (no artifacts, inverted colors, etc.), you are good to go and you can proceed to flash the image to the phone using fastboot.
Take your converted image (mycustomimage.bmp.nb) and replace the .bmp.nb part with .img suffix so the resulting file is named mycustomimage.img. Now take this *.img file and put it to the tools subdirectory inside your Android SDK installation folder (fastboot.exe must be in said subdirectory, as I will use the path as an example).
Connect the phone to your computer and enable usb debugging.
Navigate to folder inside the Android SDK where adb.exe is located (older revisions of the SDK have it inside tools subdir, latest SDK has it inside platform-tools subdir). Reboot your device to bootloader mode through adb by issuing the following commands:

adb.exe reboot bootloader
When the phone reboots into bootloader, issue the following command to flash the image into the phone:

And if you let me, I'd like to share a few images I have created myself. They're nothing extra, just a quick and noobish work in GIMP, so if you don't like them, please, don't download them and don't troll. I won't react on comments saying "your images are fugly" or anything else alike

4.we need to extract and then move the flash_image and the mtd-eng files on to the sd card. make sure that you do not put the extracted files in any folders. they need to be on the root of the card (very top level)
5.change the setting from disk to charge only, make sure that usb debugging is turned on, settings>apps>development>check usb debugging, and lastly make sure that fastboot is disabled, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot.
6.on your pc hold shift while right clicking on the android folder. select open command window here option.
7. in the command window type:

I've actually been dealing with this most of the day trying to unroot and go back 100% stock and have had no success. It was suggested elsewhere that I need to be on a stock rom? I'm dl'ing one now to try as I am currently on an ics rom.
yes you do need to be on a stock sense rom so download a stock sense rom, and then follow the guide

make sure you are running command prompt as admin. or logged in to an admin account. and all the files are in correct directories

Are you running a rooted ROM? You need to have root access for this to work. Try typing "su" at the prompt and see if it changed to a #.

Hi, I know this is really out of date, but I have to send my phone back because the screen is cracked (inner touch screen) and I wanted the phone to be completely stock. I never rooted the phone. I only unlocked the bootloader. I found this thread hoping I could relock the bootloader to make it look like I never unlocked it in the first place. Of course once I reached Step 7, I don't get the # sign. I get the $ sign and I don't know what to do :/
Ok, so I'm going to make a little write up on how to easily install ADB and fastboot on a Mac. It's actually quite simple, and plus you don't have to worry about drivers like in Windows.
Instructions
First, make a folder named "android" (no quotes of course ) You can place it anywhere on your hard drive, it doesn't really matter. Put it somewhere you'll easily remember, because you're going to be using it a LOT. I placed mine on my desktop.

Next, you'll want to download the android SDK from Here. (you won't need to install Java first like you would on a Windows PC, though I would recommend it anyway)
(As pointed out by Wlmeng11, you could skip this step just download a zip that I will have attached at the bottom of the page containing the adb and fastboot files instead of downloading the whole SDK)
When the SDK finishes downloading, Unzip it and the contents of the "android-sdk-mac_x86" folder into your android folder.
Once you have done that, open your android folder. Go into the tools folder inside of it. Double click on the file called "android" (possibly called android sdk) This file is a UNIX executable and will open within a Terminal window.
When it finishes opening, check the folder called tools. Make sure both "Android SDK Tools" and "Android SDK Platform-tools" are selected within the tools folder. Click install and wait for them to download.
When they finish downloading, go into the platform-tools folder inside your android folder, then copy adb and fastboot and paste them into the root of your android folder.
Now that you have adb and fastboot installed, we're going to want to test them to make sure they work.
Go ahead and plug in your android device at this time. Make sure android debugging is enabled in settings. Go into Settings > Apps > Developer and check it there (for Gingerbread 2.3 and lower) or go into Settings > Developer Options and check it there for Ice Cream Sandwich or Jellybean. As of now, there are two ways to access adb and fastboot.
Open a Terminal window (look in Applications > Utilities if you can't find it). Type "cd" followed by the path you saved your android folder to (I'm going to use the Desktop for this demonstration) it should look like this

cd /Users/<yourusername>/Desktop/android
Press enter.
Now you need to actually execute an adb or fastboot command. To do this, you'll need to type "./adb (or fastboot) <command>" For this tutorial, we will use "ADB devices" since it doesn't actually do anything to the phone. (we won't use fastboot since it requires rebooting to the boot loader which is different for every device)
In the same terminal window as before type the following:

then hit enter. It should turn up your device's serial number. If it does, proceed to the next step, if not recheck your steps, then leave a post in this thread.
(if it says * daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully * that is perfectly normal)
Now, at this moment, ADB and Fastboot are both completely useable. However, it's very annoying to have to CD into the directory and use ./ in front of every terminal command. I'll show you how to add it to your path so you don't have to do any of that.
Open a new Terminal window and type

it will open a window that looks like this:
(Yours will probably be blank, because I've added a lot of stuff to mine over the years)
Add a line to it that contains the path to your android folder. (again, I'm using Desktop) It should look like this

Once you have added that, press CTRL+X to exit, then Y to confirm the save then press enter. It will close the nano editor. You can close the Terminal window now.
Now we need to verify that it works. Open a new Terminal window and type

If it shows the serial number, then you have set it up successfully and are good to go!

To save time, you might want to just have a adb/fastboot combo instead of the entire sdk.

Well since this guide is primarily aimed towards users who only want to root their phone, rather than developers, adb/fastboot is really all you need.
So it would save time to just use an adb/fastboot combo.
I still prefer linux
I still prefer the linux enviroment, although its handy to have the adb on my macbook for when I'm not at home and have bricked my device :S
I had already got this setup, I just didn't know the ~/.bash_profile bit Now I know had to add my own programs as actual programs and not just aliases XD

Indeed, though this method allows you to update your adb and fastboot via Android SDK Manager (ASM). Also, in cases where all you need is adb and fastboot, you can speed up future update checks by going to "Tools"->"Manage Add-on Sites..." in ASM and click on "Disable All" button in "Official Add-on Sites" tab. From there on Android SDK Manager will check only the default repository containing tools and APIs.

It could be done that way, but I personally put other stuff in the android folder on my Mac, and also it's a bit quicker to just drag a file into one folder on your desktop than into a folder within a folder

You won't be able to install the SDK, but you can extract the android.zip to a folder named android on your desktop or wherever and use that in place of the SDK step

Actually, that's a PowerPC Mac, so Intel OSX software will not work.
There is no official support for PowerPC that I know of, but someone on XDA did make binaries for PowerPC.

Ive encountered one problem and its device specific. My nexus 7 tablet works great with adb, but my htc evo 4g lte doesnt. its rooted, and running cm 10 4.1.2. its debugged any idea how to make it see the device?

I won't show you how to make usage of it, there is plenty of How-to's for that purpose all around xda and on the Web.
This is all safe to install on your Windows based computer, and if you can not achieve success with this installation, well obviously, you shouldn't play the hacking game with your device. From now on, I or anyone else on the Internet can not be held responsible if something really bad is happening to you because you didn't read and followed any given instructions letters by letters and you ended with a screwed, pricey and valuable paperweight device. That being said, let's get started.

I have the HTC One for AT&T, I have the drivers installed and everything works fine when the phone is powered on I can transfer stuff back and forth easily. Although as soon as I boot my into the bootloader and select the fastboot and fastboot usb and when I run my adb devices in the CMD it comes up blank under the devices connected with several cables in all 4 usb ports. What is wrong? Help please
this helped me thanks. I followed everything to the tee. I only had a problem with changing the .txt to.bat extension however in notepad choosing save as and adding ".bat" in quotation marks allowed me to change the file extension

Step Two: Setting up a working folder
THERE ARE TOW METHODS FOR THIS -but i will mention only one for now.
1. WHEN YOU HAVE BASE ROM AVAILABLE.
FIRST METHOD -
1.First our folder structure should look like this:

cygwin folder/home/your user name/kitchen
1.Inside the kitchen it should look like this:
1. Now we need a base rom for working on, You can any rom but i don't know if it works with stock roms:silly:
Just Place the original rom zip in the original_update folder inside the kitchen.
2.run the cygwin.exe again type:

./menu(enter)
1.now enter option 1, enter again. You should see your rom listed, choose and enter
you will be asked about changing the working folders name, at this point it makes no difference so just continue.
2.congratulations you have a working folder!!!:victory:
Step Two :change/modify/update rom
YOU CAN MODIFY YOUR ROM IN TWO STEPS:
MODIFY USING ANDROID KITCHEN - for basic modification.
MODIFY MANUALLY. - for advanced modification.

BUILDING KERNELsThis post includes every thing that helps you develop and make a good kernel for your device
Requirements
1. linux box 32 bit with working gcc. you can use real linux machine or virtual machineOr just simply UBUNTU 10.04 64-bit
2. Sourcery G++ Lite 2009q3-68 toolchain for ARM EABI from http://www.codesourcery.com/ (Linux version without installer arm-2009q3-68-arm-none-eabi-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.bz2)
3. mkbootimg with md5support. got it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=241 . credit to harish2704
4. split_bootimg.pl (google it)
5. kernel source from http://opensource.samsung.com . i use GT-P3100_ICS_Opensource_Update.zip
6. stock boot.img (or from your custom kernel).

Setting up the environment & building the kernel for the first time
Ubuntu 10.04 64-Bit (recommended)
Ubuntu 12.04 64-Bit
Note: If you want to use virtualization software, do not use Virtualbox. You can run into networking issues and so on. I suggest using VMWare Player instead, which is available for free on http://www.vmware.com
Steps :
1. make folder "sgy" in your home. the result is folder "/home/<yourname>/sgy". <yourname> is your linux user name, and from now replace <yourname> with your user name. put all file you already download there
2. extract "GT-P3100_Kernel.tar.gz" from "GT-P3100_GB_Opensource_Update.zip". put also in "sgy" folder
3. open terminal emulator and go to your working path with command

cd ~/sgy
4. extract your compiler with

tar -xvf arm-2009q3-68-arm-none-eabi-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.bz2
5. create folder "kernel" and extract kernel source there

mkdir kernel
cd kernel
tar -xvf ../GT-P3100_Kernel.tar.gz
you got 2 folder, "common" and "modules"
6. open folder "common", there is file "Makefile". open with text editor and find line with content "/opt/toolchains/arm-eabi-4.4.3/bin/arm-eabi-". replace with "/home/<yourname>/sgy/arm-2009q3/bin/arm-none-eabi-", don't forget replace <yourname>.
7. in terminal goto folder "common" and load default config for sgy

cd ~/sgy/kernel/common
make bcm21553_totoro_05_defconfig
8. if you want change you config run
Code:
make menuconfig
9. if you ready to build then run
Code:
make
or if you want to make it faster
Code:
make -j3
10. when complete and no error appear, copy your kernel to "sgy" folder

cp arch/arm/boot/zImage ~/sgy
11. extract ramdisk from your boot.img

cd ~/sgy/
perl split_bootimg.pl boot.img
you got "boot.img-kernel" and "boot.img-ramdisk.gz". move "boot.img" and "boot.img-kernel" to other place.
12. repack your new kernel and ramdisk. but first get md5sum of your new kernel

you got something like

you need that "1fd319aa60abc2abae2e5932bcb9fc77" write it or copy to text editor. you need run it every time compile new kernel
13.Repack

chmod +x mkbootimg
./mkbootimg --kernel zImage --ramdisk boot.img-ramdisk.gz --base 0x81600000 --kernelMD5 <your md5sum result> -o boot.img
14.And if you want to make an odin flashble

tar -cf boot-sgy.tar boot.img

UOT Kitchen customizationHello everyone, today I'm creating this thread for newbies who want to learn how to use UOT Kitchen so it can be used by the Galaxy Tab 2.
It allows us to mod everything in the phone! You can even choose which to mod.
Prerequisites:
- You current ROM's SystemUI.apk, framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk
The instructions are as follows:
Step 1: Battery mod
Over here, you can change:
Battery icon
Battery charging animation
Battery style
Battery colour parts
Firstly, just choose a battery bar that you like. (I personally prefer the Honeycomb one)
Secondly, choose the charging animation. (Hybrid looks nice)
Thirdly, you can choose to change the colour parts or leave it as it is.
Fourthly, (optional) you can select Additional options:
Remove % numbers
Remove charging icon
Use gradient colour fill
Well, that's all for battery.
Step 2: Icons
Here you can change:
Smiley icons
Status bar icons
Notification Power icons
This doesn't need much instructions; pick what you like.
Step 3: Status bar
This is probably the most important thing when it comes to theming: the Status Bar!
It allows you to change:
Status bar transparency
Top bar
Add/edit top bar text
Add a header
Add/edit carrier
Add a background on the status bar
Customize notifications' colours
Add/edit footer
Firstly, you need to specify your phone's screen resolution size. (Ours is hdpi.)
Secondly, mix-and-match.
Step 4: Popup (a.k.a Window Animations)
This one is just as important.
It allows you to change:
Add/edit overscroll glow
Edit popup windows
Loading circle
Volume/Download bar
Add/edit list dividers
Same thing, mix-and-match.
Step 5: Lockscreen
This allows you to change:
Lockscreen
Step 6: Window
This allows you to change:
Window animations
It allows us to use the ICS windows animation effect!
Step 7: Fonts
This allows you to change:
System fonts
They have 26 fonts to choose, including the famous Roboto font!
Step 8: Bootanimation
This allows you to change:
System bootanimation
They have loads of bootanimations to choose from. Have fun!
Step 9: File upload
This is where you:
Upload system files for modding
Choosing updater-script type
Apply 9patch autofix
Toggle ThemeChooser preview for ldpi/mdpi/hdpi
Allow to download your settings into a UOT Kitchen-openable format
Just upload your system files.
But remember to choose the updater-script type as Galaxy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Step 10: Summary
This is where you can check the status of your mods.
Once it's okay, you can submit the work to the kitchen.
Once you submit it, you'll be given a number. That's the name where your file will be processed under and be shown for download at the "Pickup" section.
(Note: If it gives an error instead of a download post it at the UOT thread)
