i bought a brand new acer iconia a500 with honeycomb 3.2 i was trying to add the arabic support for the device so i found an update but i didnt know that it was for an older version that is honeycomb 3.0 so the whole thing got massed up but i managed to erase the 3.2 and keep the 3.0 ,,
here is my problem ...
i tried to do an update for 3.2 because its much faster and the device downloaded the update of 360 mb but it wasn't applicable and an error message appeared , so ive downloaded a honeycomb rom from the developers here and i coped it to the external sd and when i try to flash it i get this image that am attaching which shows the message that am getting , i think its saying that the system is still not fully packed or something , any way how can solve this issue , please help me guys
thank u for reading my message
you don't appear to have clockwork recovery loaded....
I would download a legit acer rom (no beta, etc) and copy that to your sd card and get that loaded. Once you load that.. root and install acer recovery so you can flash clockwork recovery. That will allow you to flash custom 3.2 roms regardless of what os you have.
also, you'll likely end up with a locked thread here as the mods will tell you to post threads like this in the Q&A section.
good luck..
You iconia was shipped with 3.2?

hi there..
yes im new to this forum but i spend the last week...reading through many threads here...finally i made my mind up registering to this forum
its the first time i tried to root my tablet on my own but during the root process...sth went wrong..
so i tried almost everything to unbrick my a501 tab...but nothing works really..
i dont think there is a thread especially for the a501 tab
soo i should ask in general..is there a way to unbrick a a501 tab using update.zip which are supposed to be used for the a500 tab?
i also tried to use those decrypted files...but there is no reliable acer update decrypter... -.-
no chance for me..but then i found this...
Acer_A501_4.017.03_EMEA_CUS7.zip (System Dump of official Acer 3.2)
if i download this...is there a possible chance then to boot my a501 i repeat "A501" tab...?
is there a "ready made decrypted .zip file" in this forum..?
EDIT: no reason to post replies to this thread...
i solved the prob. on my own...my a501 tab is now on honeycomb 3.1
but are there reliable root threads for a501 3.1honeycomb..??
thx for ur help...^^
Hi Muztaki i think i did the same thing as you do you have any steps to solve the problem / can you point me to where you found how to solve it thanks

how did you solve your brick phone problem..i have acer a501 that just got stuck on android logo...i've been searching for solution but couldnt find it..i tried full package flashing but it does not work with vol- +power it wont go to flash mode...any suggestion?
i have the same problem, please HELP!
Root on the 500/501 under HC 3.1 can be rooted by installing Iconiaroot.apk. You can search this in the 500 forum and find it quite easily. Note, stay away from the megaupload links
Once rooted, download AcerRecovery from the market. It will install a CWM/RA recovery for your tab. I understand there are more choices now.
If you wish to go to ICS, I would highly advise you check and READ Civato's guide for ICS Bootloader and Recovery. Read it several times. If you want to run ICS, I advise you upgrade your bootloader to ver4+. Procedures are in Civato's thread.
If you have a 500, you have a choice of roms. Civato, Smaury, Taboonay, and EZTerry.
If you have a 501, well, you have mine. And it's a beta release from Acer.

You can use IconiaRoot, apk if you are on HC 3.1. Do a search of the forum and you should be able to find it.
Keep in mind, if you updated to HC 3.2, it's a bit more difficult.
The 500/501 use the exact same procedures. The only difference would be if you installed an a500 ROM. It will install, but you will have no Wifi&GPS.
So when it comes to procedures, they are the same. It's just there are a ton more 500 users, than 501 users, so most of the threads state for the 500.
Any issues, just post a question.

I just rec'd the new A500 8Gb version that already has 3.2 installed. So this is not the normal 3.2 OTA, which maybe the same. Don't know how to confirm.
I have read so many posts that appears to be rooting instructions for 3.0 and not for 3.2. I see one Thread that had instructions on how to root a OTA 3.2 but the instructions even says will take 1.5hrs. I have rooted tablets/phones before and i know it doesn't take that long and don't want to lose data.
I don't want to install a custom rom just so i can be rooted. I just want to root this tablet and i don't want to downgrade the bootloader.
Can anyone please point me to the correct thread or simply let me know if rooting is currently out of the question for this scenerio.
im on the same page, just picked up the 3.2 from costco.. A little common sense points me and you in the direction of downgrading to the 3.0.1.. Then bumping up to the rooted 3.2.. its not a one click solution but it makes complete sense..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
im doing it as i write this let you know my success..
Yeah I have read that an option is to downgrade to 3.0, root then go to 3.2. Guess i'm waiting on a short version that will root stock 3.2 and it doesn't make sense to me to go back only to go up versions of rom for this alternative route.
lol its data, not like your trading in your new car for a 87 nova.. Downgrade is for exploit access only as soon as root --> update recovery ---> flash rom you will be right back to 3.2..
:-/
anyways method 2 works.. did it in 15 minutes cause i got distracted..
good luck waiting for ur 1 click
cool, so i guess this is the best solution for now....i'll do the same.

I found out the hard way too, got the OTA update of 3.2 installed, then got the acer recovery installer downloaded. Was a colossal waste of time...
Thought I'd let others know, easier than having to stuff around yourself and hoping you can recover...
Thx for the heads up guys, i did install the acer recovery. Now i know why you need it since that 3.0 downgrade is very unstable. I did manage to root, install CWM and flashed a 3.2 rom.
I used this... straight root no downgrade required.

I don't have enough posts to add to the thread in the Dev forums, so I will ask here.
My Iconia A500 is not rooted, I don't feel that I needed it to be rooted most of the time. Now that is out of the way, I have questions.
Is there a version of this Dev leak that I can flash if I don't care about rooting or recovery? I believe the version he leaked is a CWM or RA recovery flashable only, so I would need the original untouched release.
If I do flash this, I should be able to flash future versions correct, or possibly the final version of the ICS release?
Essentially I would like to use this release on my tablet without caring about root or recovery, but I also don't want to screw myself for future releases.
Is it possible to reflash back to an old Honeycomb release?
You might not be able to post in the dev thread, but you can read it. All your answers are in there, most are even in the OP!

If you don't care about root or recovery, than it is best you stay stock, and wait for OTA updates. This will keep you relatively safe.
Take a deep Breath this could turn out to have issues and not be complete.. There is only reports that it is flash-able.This does not guarantee that is will Run properly. As its a Acer development rom leaked to the public..
I will try it after there are 2 or 3 more days of comments. If it seems to be working well.I must have Root. Hope the post above mine has helped.
JUST Think if it does not pan out you can be one that said IM SMART I WAITED..
GOOD LUCK . DONT CROSS THE STREET WITHOUT LOOKING BOTH WAYS.
This rom is very easy to be flashed on the a500, dear erica_renee. I've done it tonight and I did come, like you, from the latest version of the unrooted Acer stock ROM.
In order to do this, you must:
- flash from your PC, a rooted rom version 3.2 on your tablet with the little app "DotNetDetecter". You can download it from somewhere on XDA Iconia A500's developers threads but I don't remember in which thread I found it.
- install the app "Acer Recovery" (free on the market)
- download the zip of RA recovery (You'll find the link in the Vache's thread) and install this recovery from your CMW recovery you've installed with the rooted rom 3.2 in the first step
- download and install from the RA recovery the ROM ICS that you can download on the website of Vache... Choose the "RA recovery" version of this ROM.
Very pleasant version, this ICS ROM ... but the low volume defect when I record sounds is still present...
Again and again I'm more and more convinced that this problem comes from the LOW QUALITY of these microphones !!!

are you saying that you flashed the cwm version of this on a a500.or do you have a501 Or are you using the non rooted full rom version.. And yes the mic issue i agree with . Considering going to Black box and buying upgraded mics and install . but i dont use it that much.
I have an Iconia A500, renee and I flashed the leaked Acer ICS stock ROM that Vache proposes on his website.
The link is on the first page of his thread.

ok .
now can you go to the root for a200 thread and follow that procedure and see if it will ROOT For you..
this could be the solution if so..
Thanks in advance...
I'd try it myself, but I don't want to lose my current bootloader and the ability to flash custom roms, so I'll just wait.

Why do you fear not being able to go back to honeycomb ?
ICS a real improvement, for me. Google chrome is a great browser too.
These are my first impressions anyway. Very good, very pleasant.
But, if you're not in a hurry, you can wait one more month, of course.

I MUST have root access. that is all..
may i ask if you have checked the fallow..
GPS.
Can you tether to a android ad-hoc network
does Ti Backup work.
Does email exchange work.
I could go on but i will not .. THANKS IN Advance
No root on ICS (yet?).
I guess that you will loose it as well when you will install this Rom as an update by OTA...
I don't really need a root on my tablet, personaly, except when I want to test a custom Rom.
There is maybe a solution to keep the root anyway. Check in the thread of Vache.
Apart from that, everything works better than ever for me (gps, tether through my htc Desire, caméra, etc ... except the recurrent prob with the microphones ).
I don't use Titanium backup (that needs root, isn't it?) but MyBackup pro.
Email exchange? Do you mean the app working with Outlook on Windows? I don't use it neither. I use gmail and I import my other accounts on gmail. Sorry. But my email accounts (pop) work perfectly well.
Everything works very well actually with this Rom. I didn't notice any problem till now. No way to go back to HC...
I wonder if Thor has this yet. He is probably the best a500 ICS dev right now.

Just to let you know. I have flashed with the full 4.0.3 (not CWM/rooted one), and then used the first method here to restore back to 3.0.1, then installed CWM to install a ROM without any problems. I have since updated to 4.0.3 full again as it's by far the best ROM for me.
Ny the way, I noticed this morning that the ability to disable bloatware has been added to the stock ics rom via app section of settings, so one less reason for me to need root.

Thanks Antarell,
This is good to know for people who would be nostalgic of Honeycomb
By the way, there is a simplier way to go back to HC with a root. That's the one I've used several times with no bad issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539
This leak flies. Its awesome. Actually makes me not care about losing recovery. I really couldn't ask for more from this. At least we know there's a way back if we really need it.

Over the air to ics, use for a week to see how it runs for you. Then make your mods, that way you can compare and know what messed it up.

Rooting/custom recovery ICS is the easy bit...icsRoot will do the job, and Acer Recovery Installer from the market to install a recovery....
flashing the bootloader (needed for some custom roms) seems to get a few people confuddled, there are plenty of guides to help you there...and plenty of 'help, I'm bricked threads' too so have all your ducks in row before you go down that road
You need the acer drivers from acer and also the google USB drivers, once you have the drivers set and a custom recovery then do a backup, it will generate a "uid.txt" file in the backup folder...copy this file and guard it with your life!!!!! This is the infamous CPUID...from which you get your tabs "secure boot key" IF anything goes wrong then this cpuid is the only thing that will un-unbrick you!!! Make sure you get this before you say goodbye to HC as ICS reports your serial no. which aint gonna work, its by far the easiest way to get yr cpuid, so do yourself a big favour!!!
Honeycomb cannot be rooted...., but there are pre-rooted HC roms around, ezterry has one and also has a nice stock based ICS with a custom kernel. timmydean also has one - the good thing about his one is that its one of only 2 ways to downgrade back to HC, needed if you bork the bootloader flash or are unlucky enough to get a tab that gets 'stuck formatting/partitioning' in nvFlash
As far as actually getting ICS, as shaun said, wait for yr tab to update itself - you'll need to d/l the acer enhancement something-or-other from the market. OR just flash an ICS stock or custom rom - there are normally 2 different kernels for the custom roms "one for the patched bootloader 3.12+ and one for BL 3.01" acer recovery installer will tell you which one you have but if you havent flashed the patched BL then you'll be on the 3.01.
think thats about it for now!!! happy flashing
Hi folks. new Iconia 500 owner here. Mine is rooted and is currently on HC3.1 I'm going to guess it's the HC bootloader. Is there a way to check? If it is the HC bootloader, is this thread the best one to follow coming up to an ICS bootloader for use with ICS and JB ROMS? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425 I saw the dual bootloader thread from Skril but wondered if that might be a little too much for somebody just wanting to run a normal ICS or JB setup.
I guess your good to go on jellybean if you update your bootloader , remember put the rom and gapps on PRIOR to updating the bootloader , you can check your bootloader by using acer recovery installer on the home screen it'll say bootloader version or something , then after that it'll either say 3.11 or 3.12 , those are honeycomb bootloaders , the ics bootloaders say 3.14 multi or something of that sort, goodluck
Sent from my A501 using xda app-developers app
The thread you linked to just explains how to get the hacked bootloader working on your tab... There's only one. A word of warning though: If you're on Linux, only the manual process works and it can be a bit fiddly... It seems that it doesn't work at all on some newer kernels and the script given in the thread is outdated. On windows, just use Blackthund3r's tool as suggested in civato's howto.
Thanks folks. Waiting on a 16gig SD card to come in before trying it. Looking forward to really using this tab since it's got that great HDMI out.
By the way when i said put gapps and rom prior to bootloader i mean save them to your sd card , don't flash it before the bootloader or else you'll need to reinstall a hc rom
Sent from my A500 using xda app-developers app
It is not necessery upgrading the boot loader to run an ICS or JB ROM!!!
The HC 3.0.1 boot loader is open, so it allows you to install what ever ROM you want.
And you can return every time you wish to your original HC ROM (backup) without the necessity of downgraiding again
