Currently my favorite ROM is MIUI. It's so much different than any other ROM and there's a ton of customization.
Looks: easy 10
Speed: not the fastest ROM but quick. I'll give it an 8
Battery life: easy 10. I get the better battery life than any other ROM
Stability: 8 - depends on the build but all in all pretty stable.

man its all really personal opinion but ill give it my best review seeing as how ive used all of the ones that are available for the shift "i think"
AOSP ROMS: CM7 (Cyanogenmod 7) and Shift Deck
AOSP DEFINITION:Stock Pure Google Android. doesnt get much simpler than that.
Shift Deck: This is about as AOSP as it gets its pure stock android (think of a nexus S) Shift Deck like most AOSP roms gives great battery life. I find making it a little over a day not very hard with quite some usuage. The speed is very slick too.
My rating
Looks:7 (an opinated question)
Speed:10
Battery Life:9
Stability: 10
Features: 6
CM7: This is AOSP with a lot of different features inside of it that are hard to go through all of them. but basically if you like the look of AOSP but want more customization options and features CM7 is a great way to go
My Rating
Looks: 7
Speed 10
Battery Life:9
Stability: 8.5(only because its still in nightly builds and there are a few problems)
Features:8 (more than stock AOSP and some good ones at that)
Evervolv: Think of Shift Deck with a different stock launcher. Its codenamed Creo and has a couple different features. for that purpose to me it recieves the same score as Shift Deck
SENSE ROMS
Sense in general is what the shift comes stock with. An overlay on android made by HTC to bring further customization for the purpose of length i will not include Stock Sense 2.1
Sense 3.0 Kingdom Port: This is a full Sense 3.0 port for the evo shift its elegant and sexy and jam packed with customization. Now HTC did state Sense 3.0 would only work on NEWER devices and it does show in the port. on a stock kernel it does get really laggy with memory issues.
MY rating
Looks:9.5( i dont give looks a 10 because it sort of opiniated)
Speed:5 (it works but to me unusable)
Battery Life:7 (the port defeinently takes a toll on the battery
Features: 10
Stability: 4
MikShift-G Sense 2.1+3.0: This is based off Sense 2.1 with 3.0 features added into it. Personally this is one of my favorites. Its got a great mix of 3.0 features so you dont feel left behind and out of date and with aamikams optimizing it runs beautifully. I dont notice lag per say but there are a couple times things take just a tad bit longer to load. Added Sense 3.0 Features Include -Lockscreen,Weather,Messaging, Task Manager, and probably a couple others im forgetting
Looks:9.1 (lol)
Speed.9.5
Battery Life:9 (As good or sometimes better than AOSP)
Features:9
Stability: 9.9 (even the beta was fantastic only one KB light problem that is still in the official build)
SupremeSense 2.1+3.0. So you like the sound of Mikshift-G but you miss that 3D rosie and 3D widgets from Sense 3.0? Well here you go. SupremeSense is based off Mikshift-G but with a couple nice features Including 3D Sense 3.0 Launcher, and Darktremmors A2SD. This is a little bit more memory heavy so there is some lag but definently still usable
Looks:9.4
Speed:8.5
Battery Life:9 (same as Mikshift-G)
Features: 9.2
Stability:9
MIUI ROMS
We have a few miui ports and there basically the same just newer versions so im just going to review miui in general
MIUI (I think its said like "MY-U-I") is very umm "different" or in alot of ways its not different. if you have ever used or seen an iphone then you have a sense (no pun intended) of what the MIUI launcher is like. Its based of of AOSP but it doesnt look like it. It has an iOS type feel to it. It has no app drawer all your icons are on the homescreens and you scroll left and right through them. you have the ability to make folders like in iOS which seems to be an essential part in MIUI. You have a lockscreen sort of like Sense 1.0-2.1.
Its got a different way of handling text messages. and menu systems and the whole UI of the phone has its own unique feel that you have to try out to completley understand. MIUI currently does not support 4G so if you use it your SOL. but it is definently worth checking out
It does run across MMS issues sometimes too. Miui has its own personal theme manager that will theme anything from sounds to design asthetics to bootanimations, and lockscreens including options for sense 3.0 type lockscreens. its a very complete theming process. Think of it as HTC Hub on Steroids.
My Rating:
Look:8.9(once again opiniated question)
Speed:9 (generally very slick)
Battery Life:9 (AOSP like Battery Life)
Stability: 7.5 (this is miui's lowest point)
Features. 9 (its very unique in features)

Its an outstanding ROM. but if you just dont like the design asthetics of sense then no you wont like it.
but all the problems people say they have with sense is eliminated in the rom
I am running Supreme Sense which is based of Mikshift-G (as i said in the review lol) and at 72% battery life i am going 8 hours and 8 min (reading it off my phone as i type) with wifi going the whole time, gps, lots of texts a few voice calls and LOTS of web browsing.
The lag people expierence with sense is compltley gone it runs great and smooth just as fast as AOSP. Some apps may take half a second more to load tho
and you gotta love the sense 3 lockscreen haha
Thanks notsointeresting, I just got this phone and have been wondering what way I wanted to go on it in terms of what rom to put on it. I am coming from a Samsung Transform so almost any rom is going to run faster and smoother then the best rom and kernal package could give me on the transform. Based on your review I am trying the MikShift-G Sense 1.4 so far so good really enjoy the sense feel and look. Thinking of trying Supreme Sense but would like to find a video of it before going through the trouble of downloading it and setting it up.
Not to hijack the thread but could you tell me even in a PM your review of kernals available?

Believe me I would love to haha. But unless your on an AOSP rom your SOL (sadly out of luck haha) because HTC has not provided the source code for the evo shift yet so developers can not make kernels. It's a serious GPL violation an people (including me) have been sending tweets and posting on twitters face book wall saying something like ( @HTC We still need you to release the source code for the EVO Shift 4G #GPL #Android) they will have to release it soon though and I'm thinking when that time comes I might make a dedicated thread for kernel and roms and put my reviews and information on them and let people leave reviews or what not. But that would depend on if people where interested.
Also check out my EpicBlue theme for Milshift-G it finally supports 1.4

I did not know the later versions had a sense 3 lockscreen? Is it a remake of it or is it a port of the exact one. I just ask so I can put it on my post.
And yes your right I did leave out theme manager for miui it does have a very simple way to download and use complete themes to change everything from sounds to looks to bootanimations.
Edit: I added that information in the first post I made. Thanks very much Rooster85 and Crump84

The post has been updated with more accurate information
I have not flashed miui since 1.7.5 I think? And then went to mikshift-G and haven't tried anything since then but looks like I need to take a look at miui again
I would highly suggest it, it was 7.something where a lot of cool changes were made. I believe the sense lockscreen its a exact port or at least it looks EXACTLY the same as the mikshift [email protected]

MIUI is great and all I really like it. But until MIUI starts supporting 4G I can't use it for more than a couple hours to figure out all the features and what ill miss when I flash back.
I live in texas so its the one of the most heavily covered 4G areas (if not THE most heavily covered area) in the U.S so I need it

Yeah, i hear ya on that... Without 4G I wouldn't have a cell phone... Where I live my 4G is sometimes worse than 3G speeds... My 3G is usually at 1x speeds and my talk varies... For all that I've tried Evervolv and it messed up my phone. Hated it. I currently use the Cyanogen Nightlies. They for me offer the best of everything. Speed, customization, battery life... With the theme chooser they can look basically how ever you want. With beautiful widgets you can get some sense like widgets and others. Many launcher options. I use ADW and its a perfect blend of stability and customization. I've heard very good things about Shift deck. In my opinion sense is super slow compared to AOSP. People have said that the Mikshift G runs like AOSP. But to me, i can see the difference. So I'm gonna vote for plain and simple cyanogen

Firstly, I want to say that I am doing this just to get everyone's own personal view on which EVO ROM is the best. Before I get all kinds of hateful posts just hear me out. I want to know what you think from your own personal point of view and why you think it's the best. For those who switch ROMs daily, post and tell some pros and cons of each maybe. Tell me why you like it, what you like about it, which of your needs it meets, which it doesn't. And so on!!! I think this could be a good thread for the noobs to learn different things about different kinds of ROMs and what the different ones have to offer. Thank you XDA community!!!!!
Edit: "Frequent flaher" I like that term and I'm sure it applies to a lot of people posting in this thread.
Destroyer is awesome. Very fast and awesome theming. VaelPak is also really good b/c it's so unique and customizable. IMHO, if you're new to flashing, you need to try, CM or variant of, Miui, VaelPak, and a Z ROM (MikZ or Warm Z).
For sense ROMs, Unleashed is really good. Very fast/smooth and awesome theme options. Best sense ROM IMHO. MikFroyo is also very fast. I can get good battery life out of almost any ROM, but EViO 2 stands out in that area.
ive flashed alot of sense and about all of the gingerbread roms. the gingerbreads are fast, but too high maintenance for me. sure some will say that its stable for them but 8 out of 10 in the cm threads are trying to work out bugs.
theres also a lot of fast and fully functional sense roms highly themed. depends on what the end user whants out of their rom, functionality, look, batt, etc..
i like a bare bones stock sleek looking optimized preferably lightly themed rom. thats why im currently running Miks 4.6b2 ODEXED themed by Chogardjr. i removed all of the useless stuff, its faast, rock solid stable, great battery life and everything works. IMHO!
I have used almost every setup there is, and most are pretty good, except they all have an issue or 2 that makes me feel incomplete when it comes to my phone.
Sense Roms: King's Ultra Froyo and Ultra Froyo 2, Koni's Elite 1 and Elite 2. ALL of those are pretty equal. Very fast, smooth, beautiful looking, but no matter what kernel I tried, battery life was garbage. One thing about my phone is I tried almost every NetArchy Kernel there is, I bet, and never got a good battery on a Sense ROM.
Miui: I can see why people like it, but I just don't like having all my apps on the desktop and switching to LPP takes away part of the allure of havng Miui. The theme changer wouldn't install any of the themes I downloaded. Plus, I had issues with screen flicker, but I understand I did the update wrong, so that may be where that came from. Also, I spent over an hour alphabetizing my apps... damn OCD!
CM7: By FAR the best battery life, with the kernel I use, SavagedZen 009, but the GPS navigation thing is an issue. I take my phone off the charger at 6AM, and by 11PM, after moderate to heavy use, I'm never below 50%. Still, I want those Sense Widgets. LPP has them, but in People, for instance, you don't get the user pics from Facebook, and all the entries are just the stock Android image. One other thing on CM7, that is intolerable, is that it takes a coon's age to copy anything to my SDCard. I did a back up, and reformat the other night and it took an hour and a half to copy my music back (just under a gig), for example
Right now, I'm running Destroyer, and the battery isn't as good as with nightly 14, but it's pretty good. BEtter than with any of the others I've tried. And whatever issues people have with this, I'm not having them. Everything is working good. Very fast, too.
For me, the best, most complete ROM there is, is VaelPak 3.2. It has everything you want. Almost like all the different Mods were combined to make one insane ROM. More custumization options than CM/Sense and MiUi put together, puls packs of goodies that come with the ROM installed on the SDCard. I can't remember why I took it off now, but I think it was the battery life, again, was horrible. Dropped 15% in less than 2 hours with the stock kernel. Although, I didn't keep it on long enough to really test other kernels with it, and there are a few that people using it say give them fanatastic battery life.
I love my CM7 nightlies. Nuff said!!!!!! <3

i like warm z.. but it dont have hdmi and 4G. ffc can be worked around.
what dont you give your thoughts???
Well I just started flashing ROMs about 9 months ago and started a basically sense roms. I didn't really like them bc of limited customization and they were a little slow and battery was horrible. From there I stuck with an AOSP rom for about the past 6 months until a few weeks ago and read up a little on MIUI and tried that out for a whole 6 hours and hated it. I couldn't stand all my apps on the screen and no drawer. Really got on my nerves. Then tried out that Unleashed and was happy with that for about a week til I really started doing some reading up on CM and decided to try it out, loved it and everything about it. So now I'm a supporter of them, but am super stoked to try out this new SZ ROM. Think that might be the new rom of choice for me.
Edit: That good Dan?

^^^ that will work...
Not sure why anyone hasn't said this yet but Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 5 is the best in my opinion. Might not have been updated in a while, but in my experience is the fastest Sense rom with lots of eye candy while still looking sleek/professional without going overboard, the best battery life (16 hours heavy use 30 with light use/good signal), and everything works. I know that AOSP roms have wimax now but gps has been hit and miss with every one of them (for gingerbread at least, I don't care for any 2.2 AOSP roms). Navigation definitely did not work.
I loved Evervolv and Savage but again, not everything works the way it should. Myn's is just the best daily driver. Battery life is phenomenal, I haven't been able to get more than 16-20 hours out of an aosp rom.
IMO (never h):
All the Sense ROMs are the same. They are just the same stock ROM with some heavy theming and maybe a custom tweak here and there ... but IMO if you're going to flash sense you're better off just checking the themes section and getting the look you want... because that's what they are.
Also keep in mind that Sense is likely a dead end as it is. I have doubts 2.3 will ever land on EVO .from HTC/Sprint... meaning it will never come to fruition in any Sense ROM. So it's a dead-end thing to support anyway.
AOSP is a different story. These are truly custom, already ahead of Sense if you're a version buff (2.3.3) and tend to run faster, smoother, and with A LOT less bloat. That said they aren't all flowers and rainbows either. Because they are actually scratch written they tend to not be feature complete (though team WIN is quickly changing that) so make sure you know what feature is missing and if that's a big deal to you.
That said, CM is the AOSP leader. It has the dev support, and most AOSP ROMs you'll notice are based on CM because they are nice enough to release under GPL rather than the default Apache agreement most others use. I like it for what it is, and it's the "best" if you like vanilla Android and want to follow what Google is doing with thier OS.
The other "best" IMO MIUI. It's behind CM in terms of the latest Android base (though GB is finally in the works), and it's closed source so it is missing things available in other AOSP ROMS ... but what it does bring to the table is amazing. It's better in battery, faster, the built in apps are worth paying for if they ever make it to market ... its an amazing ROM.
I secretly have wet dreams of MIUI and CM having an Android love child and bringing me my dream ROM ... until then I flip back and forth between the two.
I'm running a special rom called "dirk diggler rom" and if you want to use it deposit 500 bucks in my PayPal . P.S its better than any rom YOU will ever run on your evo lol.

The answer depends on your needs. For instance, I don't like the look of Sense but I also need 4G, GPS, Bluetooth and Camera working everyday. That limits me to a Sense based rom until CM7 stabilizes those things. For now, I'm getting by pretty well with Nonsense. It's not been updated recently and has minor flaws but the important things work for me everyday.
No one ROM does everything well. It's all about trade-offs. When you know your own needs, the filtering the choices should be a lot easier.

Just wondering what your thoughts are. I like them both, so hopefully you can all help me make a decision.
Notes:
*if option to customize lock screen exists, HUGE plus
*I'll probably overclock / use SetCPU, so good balance of performance / battery is huge for me.
Duke it out!
I've had experience with both, virtuous is nice but CM is so much faster. It is also nice to have Android the way it was meant to be and not some companies highly modded version.
Sense uses quite a lot of memory whereas CM does not and this makes a big difference with how responsive your phone can be.
I've been using CM 7.0 Nightlies for quite a while now and the speed is awesome, plus I also like the fact that it's Android the way it should be. Battery is great for me with Cyanogen as well, about 26-30 hours with average usage (stock battery).
Having had experience with Cyanogen-based ROMs on my previous Hero and Virtuous on my current DZ, i am actually torn. For me, personally, I would have to give the edge to Virtuous. Having the wide customizability of CM was great and having LauncherPRO was so flexible. That being said, however, I like how HTC's Sense just gets you and assumes many of the things you would like to do instead of you doing it yourself.
One example would be facebook linking to your contacts. I hate seeing a generic photo when I get calls and would rather see the picture of the person calling. Having this kind of assumed integration is great. Other features like the dialer, working GPS and rmk's other small tweaks (see: Virtuous advanced kernel for use with SetCPU) make the Sense experience that much better.
On the otherhand, AOSP or CM versions of android are much lighter as they dont have the kind of assumptions and integrations of a Sense-based rom. Being highly customizable, you can implement different launchers, skins, lock screens, docks, etc.. but I did find myself cursing at some points because I am just a Sense kind of guy deep inside.
It really comes down to personal preference. Try them both for a week and see how you feel about them. Alot of people have been saying Virtuous is laggy, but I have not seen any of that lag. As with all flashes, clear data, cache, battery and davlik through recovery! Have fun and i hope you find the rom that fits you.

Sense is definitely nice, and it's something that easily sets HTC devices apart from the pack. That being said, I'm much more of an AOSP kind of guy, because as nice and pretty as Sense is, it just takes up too much RAM for my liking, and the launcher is just not customizable enough for me. Having only 3 buttons at the bottom absolutely drives me nuts; I've got to have the scrolling bottom row like Go Launcher and Launcher Pro provide. Obviously you can use these on a Sense rom, but what's the point in having a Sense rom when you don't use the Sense launcher? For me it boils down to this, and I'm sure the many other features that Cyanogenmod has that I use on a daily basis. I haven't used Virtuous since I got the phone in October, so I'm sure there's more stuff on it now than before, but I'm definitely a Cyanogenmod kind of guy. Plus there are roms based off Cyanogen, like Mexdroid, that add all kinds of pretty and additional functionality that I like.

The HTC camera app is far better than on CM, and the camera button does not lag like it does on CM. And I'm not completely sure about this (and haven't really seen it discussed here much), but it seems the Sense based ROMs have more/better hardware codecs for playback of a wider variety of videos without lag or sync issues. Also, the Sense fastboot feature is pretty nice if you have to turn off/on your phone frequently (which I do, due to frequent air travel).
I haven't given the latest and greatest CM7 versions a test drive yet, but I tried RC1 and RC2, and there were still enough bugs (GPS, video camera playback) to turn me off. I might wait until Gingerbread is officially released for our hardware before trying a GB ROM again.
For a daily, I would pick CM7 since it's quick and I'm pretty much guaranteed a full day of usage no matter what.
Virtuous, Sense, is nice and all, but the lag is a deal breaker for me. The only perks I see from Sense is the refined UI and better FaceBook integration, other than that, I don't really need it. And the battery life on Sense roms seems to be half of what I get on CM7.
CM7, stock android, is catching up though, with Gingerbread the UI has been given a cleaner look and my contacts do sync with FaceBook, but every now and then I'll have a duplicate contact, which in Sense it would allow me to link the two together. The only problem I would see with CM7 would be all of the customization options. I'd say that I'm an above average Android user, but all of the options I have available to me to customize the phone look is a bit overwhelming, in my opinion. It takes me a good hour or two to get the phone set up in a way I prefer, whereas Sense kind of has it's settings put in such a way that creates a better user experience.
So as I said before, CM7 would be my preferred ROM since when I do get it set up the way I want, the phone is easy to use and everything is quickly accessible to me. Virtuous, as nice as it is, is just a bit too slow and too much of a battery drainer for me to use it every day.

So what about using CM6? Isn't that a Froyo build?
If so, is it just lacking in features compared to the Gingerbread builds?
As a side note, can anyone tell me if CM has some sort of Facebook-to-Contact link like Sense? And if so, is it actually nice and doesn't load my entire phone app full of people I will never ever call? LoL

There is an app called contapps or something like that on market that has similar facebook to contact integration.
Speed = CM or CM based (GingerVillian)
Ease of use = Sense based (Virtuous)
It is really boiling down to personal preference. I did find myself jumping between AOSP and Sense before but could never really shake my love for Sense. The slight bloat and 0.001% lag that i experience is a good price to pay . I hope you find the rom that fits you, whatever that may be

Yep, pretty much. CM6 is very stable. But for me, if you're going to go Froyo, you may as well go Sense. I like the extra features, and you can use an alternative launcher, since the lag on the Sense ROMs is mostly when using the stock launcher, IMO. And I didn't seem to experience any worse battery life with Sense ROMs versus CM7, like a previous user mentioned. But I didn't stay on CM6 long enough to compare battery life. Plus, the theming aesthetics of the Sense ROM and Gingerbread are nicer than Froyo, in my personal taste.
Actually there is also a sense gingerbread out accurately named 'senseginger' made by teamvillain aswell. It is very good. It is the middleground of froyo sense and stock gingerbread.

CM is a lot smoother and simple.
The sense part on Virtuous takes up toooo much memory and slows the phone down, but the widgets are nice.
Android always comes down to user preference. You want a suggestion? Try both. And give it a good week. Even if you HATE it at first, give it a good while before deciding against it. You may find that once little aspect that will keep you from ever changing.
Me personally, I like CM7 over any sense based rom hands down. With the new gingerbread based cm7 I can easily link all of my facebook contacts with the ones in my contact list. If at first the picture doesn't show up, make sure you have the facebook app to sync all and then just long press your contact and join it to the facebook one. Boom, instant gratification. I personally rely on my ram being free, and the ability to overclock smoothly for playing ps one emulators. SetCpu has been known to cause glitches in cm7 for underclocking or overclocking too much, but as long as you do a minimal amount of research for your setup, it is easily avoided. As some others previously stated, it's all dependant on your preference and what you use your phone for. Try them both for a week at least, then decide, that's the best advice I could give

My first experience with a ROM was CM7 RC1-4 and a few days ago I was bored and installed Virtuous and it's not bad but I definitely prefer CM7, it's way faster and smoother. The main reason I got the G2 was because it's Vanilla Android and CM7 has it all!

Main question: do you like Sense or no? I've tried miui, virtuous, gb sense, etc. I always go back to cm7. Just smoother.
Virtuous (and all sense roms I've tried) send blurry MMSs as well.

On Camcorder, taking a video landscape, then trying to playback in portrait mode results in the screen showing white and blue lines. Same with taking the video in portrait and trying to playback while in landscape mode.
Also, there is a Gmail margin problem. And there is a decent amount of people with non-GPS (although probably most CM users are fine on this).
But similar to the previous response, I have not tried the more recent CM releases, to see if these were fixed.
As others have said, it comes down to personal preferences. I've come to like Sense recently and am really liking the amazing standby times I've been getting with Virtuous, so I'm sticking with that for a bit. After a couple releases I may look into CM7 again, though, since I miss the customizable automatic brightness levels it has (a little feature that is a big deal to me).
Ok ive been doing all this rooting and customization for about 3 months now and i have what i think is a big noob Question!
Q. What is the purpuse of other roms, other then stock or cyanogen?
-Do they offer different things that i dont know about, i mean i know some allow you to get netflix and better batterylife but isnt the batterylife thing really lie in the kernel?
But other then that why get a different Rom if im going to customize it the same way i have now?
And im totally sorry if this sounds dumb...still trying to really get into all this modding thing.

Well you bring an interesting spin on a simple thought. With all the options out there you can make a Sense ROM look AOSP or make a AOSP ROM look like sense... 8
Some of the ROMs are just personal preference. I use Cyanogen(mod) because that is what i've used for my entire "android life", it's what i know, it's what i like. I know what going to be included, i know where to find stuff... . I know eViL Dee has some follower in the same case, as well as TeamRoyal. It's a comfort level i guess. I mean with so many Sense Based ROMs, so many AOSP ROMs and some other, it's all about minor tweaks. Like Cyanogen(mod) and Faux123 both offer amazing AOSP ROMs. But Faux is a little more "pure" when it comes from an AOSP end point.

#1 what is AOSP lol
#2 so really the other roms are the same thing with sort of a different look but in reality you can basically achieve that look by modding it ..
#3 so there really isnt a difference in roms is basically wat your saying..
Don't forget miui, used to hate the ios_esk ui, but there is alot of customizability without having to go through adw or lp. Super smooth super fast. You can change everything from boot ani to fonts/custom lock screen in their there manager.
Use to be a big aosp user, but got a little plain and boring. If I was still on my mt3g I would be using aosp, but with our hardware we can afford a little more eye candy and convenience without performance sacrifice.
I usually rock between evil's vf3 and royal miui. Both get about 2 days of battery life with absolutely no lag

AOSP: android open source project. More of pure vanilla android without all the extra framework and great for performance. I've gotten up to 3500 in quadrant score on aosp and 3 days of battery life.
Sense roms: built off htc sense framework. Tons of pretty interactive widgets but sacrifice battery and performance. Your stock mt4g came with sense stuff like facebook and weather clock animated widgets. And yes you can get sense looking widgets in an aosp, but htc offers much more than you can find on the market.
Miui: kind of like ios meets android. Not everybody likes it,
You can technically make any rom type look like any other rom type. But in the core and functionality, they are world apart

The thing is you can replicate the UIs of other phones but you never never perfectly mimic the functionality gained from a specific UI, you cant get certain MIUI features in CM, or get all the integration of Sense into others rom. You can also make you phone look like a Droid, Sony, LG, Sammy, etc... I like MIUI now since it seems to be much quicker than other roms, I've used android since like late 09, and I must say MIUI is so different even though it's android at the core.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong on any of this
Cm was developed to work on most android phones. Most of the AOSP roms that you see in the glacier development section are based off of CM but customized to work better for our phone.
Now looking at other roms for instance take Royal Ginger.
"Is built and compiled from CM7 source code with lots of the CM7 extras and other assorted bloatery removed + a custom kernel & numerous tweaks and optimizations added in. It's sleak, it's mean, and it's fast"

So it came from CM, lets look at the 2.0 channel log to see exactly what the Developer did to it and then after trying CM if the changes look better it may be worth trying
- entire ROM completely rebuilt and compiled from scratch using latest 2.3.4 CM7 source code. i don't just take in all of the updates/code/commits willy nilly. i check them all out and cherry pick the ones i want .. test some out, decide whether or not to keep them in, etc. (more on that later)
- bundled with my first kernel build: ckisgen-smartass-CM7-v1.0 . this is compiled using a base of zinx's latest CM7 stock source but i've added in the smartass governor (with a little inspiration from dumbfuqs source code, thanks df!) and then tweaked a couple of addt'l settings. i've bumped the default max clock to 1.1ghz. this kernel will overclock to 1.8ghz. i've got LOTS of plans for this in the future. i'm going to be working hard on it. i went with something like this for maximum compatibility with this latest 2.3.4 and all the changes that it's brought about. I def gotta give a big THANKS to FauxMoney for the colorful late night conversations and inspiration to make my own kernel...thanks man.
- FULLY working google Talk with video and audio working BOTH ways (ok maybe not 100% .. switching to rear camera FC's but we're working on that..still really solid)
- moved basically all of the remaining 'extra' CM apps and a couple of others to user storage so that they can be easily removed using the traditional uninstall method via the manage applications menu (settings/applications). i call this one the "E-Z AOSP-ify" update. these apps are:
* terminal
* xda
* DSP manager (this is the new one with the EQ presets .. very nice)
* FM
* ROM Manager
* Spare Parts
* stk
* Swype
* Torch
* YouTube
- TONS and TONS of other stuff .. optimizations everywhere .. GPS, radio, data, ETC!!!!!

After using CM for a while this may look good so read all the comments to see if anyone was having issues and whether they liked it, was it a battery hog to slow to fast etc. Any new rom will have some minor bugs but if all the new pro's outweigh the couple cons try it.
I also saw that it was on version 2.1, so I read that channel log (I won't post here) to see what fixes or changes were made. Maybe a new theme, kernal, some new app's.
It becomes fun, get involved, learn as you go try new stuff and see what works for you. Always ask if you have a question, everyone around here is really helpful.
I just used Royal Ginger as an example to show you the difference between CM and another AOSP rom that is based of CM
Edit: Also look at the pictures that they add, most everything can be changed but a rom's pics may just look really cool that you just have to try it.
Bottom line, try it all and settle with the one you like. It'll keep you busy and entertained for months

I NEED to find the best ROM out there for the G2/Desire Z! let me know what you think it is!!
-Post what rom it is.. INCLUDING Build Number
-Explain why it is the best!
-Post a screenshot of your favorite screen i.e wallpaper..favorite widget etc..
If you could, let me know how good battery life is and stability!
-Looking for an everyday rom.. if possible
-Thanks!
I've tested several ROMs on my DZ and now I use Vision Unity.
It's basicly a 2.1/3.0 Sense hybrid ROM giving you real eye-candy.
In the latest version (1.29.0) I found some bugs/disadvantages:
- the homescreen does not rotate on keyboard open
- sometimes it lags a bit
- it takes about 300 MB ram after start, leaving you just about 70MB free (other roms are much better in this criteria)
- I experienced already few times sudden phone restart (phone just lying on table, no aggresive apps run like 3d games etc, and after few hours I take the phone and it asks for PIN) = pretty critical if you wait for an important call.
but among the roms I've tried, this seems far the best if you decide to have HTC Sense. If you can miss sense, stick to CM7, there are really cool features like finetuning the display auto brightness intensity levels (really killer feature to battery life!)
I enjoy Virtuous Sense 2.0.0 because I find it to be consistently fast and responsive, everything works for me all the time, and I still have enough ram to run a couple of apps in the background, unlike every sense 3.0 rom/hybrid I've tried.
Highly highly recommended.

LMFAO.
Cyanogen MOD 7 RC 1 or if your so inclined, nightly build #156.
- So far after testing a few ROM I've been back to CM7. Why? Once installed and running and even with keep all my favourite apps open and running in the background, I still manage to keep about 80mb of ram and CPU usage is usually between 2% and 82% with an average of 4 or 5 programs running. Ok a bit excessive I know but it still works.
I have custom memory script running that's available here on XDA and various other gadget. Battery life is usually fairly consistent with 1day 9hours of use. I use the device quite a bit in a day.
Power saving options: Brightness is set to 20% only, Juice Defender installed.
Running background application is limited to my email mostly unless I'm doing some work. Most of the time email, exchange, Facebook and twitter are sync.
I'm using Launcher Pro with the license for my main interface. Here are some screen captures for your pleasure.

Personally, my favorite ROM is MIUI.us
The stock Music app in it, is my favorite music app by far, I especially love how it not only gets the lyrics, but also scrolls them karaoke style with the song. It also has a nice theming system, and a great built in theme. Everything overall looks nicer than stock Android.
Another great thing about it is the status bar, you can enable/disable USB Mass Storage using an on/off slider in the notifications, and I love the way the switches work in the status bar.
Then there's the stock Launcher, which is much nicer than the stock Android launcher in my opinion, though I still replace it with Go Launcher, again, my personal favorite.
If you're looking for a responsive, nice looking, and user friendly ROM, MIUI.us would be my suggestion. It also has a nice backup feature with their servers. You just need to make an MIUI account. Not sure if it's still necessary, but back when I did it, I had to go to the chinese MIUI website and use Google Translate to make my account <_<

The best rom is hardest to define because it's really up to personally preference. MIUI? Sure if you're into that whole thing, but frankly I have trust issues with Chinese tech companies for reasons that have been in the news here and there.
Cyanogenmod is a great AOSP rom even though it's not 100% AOSP it's quick, intuitive, and has lots of options that would allow you to customize it as you want.
There are other roms such as OTA roms that have been made that are also very quick, but not quite as intuitive and they are not as easily customized as some other roms.
Now we get into Sense. There are ports of great roms from other devices that may have a minor bug here and there. Unity is a great rom but I know it needs work on it simply because of little bugs here and there, lack of ram of the Vision, and the battery drain of 1.31 is not so appealing. These roms do not perform as well as Sense roms made for the Desire Z, how ever you do not have some sense 3.0 features that make Sense so much more enjoyable to use.
I currently run Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 and it's a very quick rom, but it lacks the eye candy that we all would love with Unity. However what I love about the sense community is that there are many themes and many ways to enhance sense with add-ons here and there which I have done.
I want to clearly state that this is just my opinion and you should try out the roms for your self to get your own opinion and know your personal preference what appeals to one person is not always the same as the next.
Virtuous unity 1.31
Just test it , good for daily use

Actually, I'm now running the "Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 :: Enhanced & Optimized Stock ROM (2.42.405.2)". I miss the Sense 3.0 features, but I can try to flash some available mods. Especially the brightness setting in the quick setting.
But it's a small tax for a stable ROM without restarts.
Hey guys if you dont know me I was a rom dev for the xperia but moved on to the DZ. HAven't yet made a rom for the DZ, yet.
But I have been flashing non-stop since i got this phone. Its just I can't decide what I should stick to, and what will match my needs.
So im a highschool student, calendars reminders are big for me and staying organized. I play basketball and watch it too so video and stuff is needed.
But Im also a dj/producer and i need the best sound. I also like to play games ocassionaly as well.
I really love Sense 3.0 but I cant handle the laggyness even with swap enabled, is there anything else that can be done? I was on virtuous 2.00 (sense 2.1) for 2 weeks it was stable and all, but the battery was pretty drainable fast. BlissBeatMod is promising if some of it can get less laggy. And we'll have to see what Virtuous Tretanique (Affinity) will go.
Aosp is nice and fast but I dont really get the nice looks and features that miui have to offer.
Miui is really nice im running BulletProof right now. But i still dont feel like its the "one". and the quality of music isnt as great on sense even with equalizer options on.
PLEASE TELL ME ANY SUGGESTIONS, ALL WILL BE APPRECIATED

Thanks a lot, once I decide what kind I will produce I will start.
Ok Im running ILWT. It is amazing. I put a theme on. Very fast. But still some reason it just seems "boring". And the sms app on aosp/cm7 isnt as sexy.
yea i know exactly where youre coming from, I always want a newer prettier ROM... I wish someone would release one that just didnt look like it was android almost, and not like iphone, or anything, something with an original GUI.. yes i realize that's a lot to ask btw and not something I would be able to do myself but I think it'd be cool and get a lot of support! In the mean time the one I've found to be the freshest for me is MIUI because of how the themes affect like everything and really the launcher is what catches my eye, im kinda excited for the ROU launcher
i used to use cm7 and miui before. cm7 is lightweight rom, smooth and has excellent battery life. but it is lack of killer feature such as in its sms functionality, the smart dialer and etc. of course you can always download apps from market for that functions but it takes forever to load those apps on startup.
so i moved to miui, which i am currently running with bulletproof miui rom. it is rich with functionality, ridiculously-convenient-built in-features and interfaces, but consume more battery compared to cm7 unless you made certain tweak on its OC/UC. but its interface lacks of originality because it is obviously a mimic of iOS. but so far i m happy using miui.
i want to try sense based rom, but from what i learned, sense based is laggy. i miss sense interface though. look clean.
OK, if you think cm7 is boring (and I agree) I suggest you give MexDroid a spin. It was my DD for quite some time. The only reason it's not anymore is because I found Bulletproof MIUI. but I'm sure you've already tried MIUI. if not. Tun4f1sh's Bulletproof is the ONLY one I recommend.
More options would be most welcome I'm sure. I'm trying to figure out how to port roms from hd forums at the moment. The collective's absolution looks pretty sweet.

MIUI is great, iv been runing Bulletproof, it's definitely unique miui whit its virtuos oc controller witch cough my eye. But now i got ICS fever on me, not for the isc gui but some of the features. I stumbled on Galnet MIUI whit ics framework. runing fine, tried it for couple days, and the batterylife seems fine, maybe. Ill stick to this since it seems to work, and hope for updates whit possibly some new ics features.(its still same MIUI ui and functionality)
after we get somewhat working ICS, i will try that a little, and propably get back to MIUI.
I'm on Bulletproof MIUI at the moment but since the iPhone-esque UI makes my eyes hurt I installed LPP and some icon pack (can't remember the name). That way I still have the looks of Android but can combine with the impressive speed and flow of the Bulletproof MIUI ROM.
CM 7.1 for me lacks a little bit of polish visually (can't wait for CM9!) compared to Sense based ROMs and IMO MIUI offers that. I like Sense but any Sense based ROM I've tried has started to get laggy on me after a while.
Bulletproof MIUI for the win...I also like good old Cyanogen too, but for a nice mix of speed AND looks MIUI is tops for me
Love the look of Sense, but too slow and laggy
Check my thread, i got a bunch of videos of roms and see which one you like the best

in this few days, i have been testing 3 sense 3.5 rom, beatmode, affinity and rcmix.
for someone who has a very sensitive sense like me, i cant stand to wait for the phone to response due to insufficient memory in sense 3.5.
its time to go back to miui bulletproof.
I have tried many of them. CM and MIUI is cool, I just miss too many features from sense. Sense 3.0 is either laggy or will get laggy after a while. So, I always go back to my Virtuous Sense 2.0.0 NAND backup.
But: question here: why is this draining the battery soooo badly? Apart from this, this could be THE perfect ROM.

I have tried muiu, mexdroid, htc clay, g-lite, sense 2.0, unity sense and the affinity sense. I keep finding myself going back to the most stable, configurable and updated ROM ILWT CM7 (268).

Sense is smooth and polished, but every custom Sense ROM that I have ever flashed is a battery hog, even the Sense 2.1 + 3.0 hybrids.
So my current favorite is G-lite 1.05 - it's like stock + overclocking + better than stock battery life (due to deep sleep)
I like sense and am currently running Virtuous Afinity but I can see me switching to an ASOP build of ICS when it's stable enough

Curious to know what you like most about ILWT, especially compared with mexdroid and miui?
