Battery drain caused by Gallery application - Acer Iconia A500

Hi everyone,
I'm on rooted stock rom A500_4.010.45_COM_GEN1.
I've noticed battery drain caused by gallery 3d ( GalleryNew3DGoogle.apk) .
I've installed battery monitor widget and below are the results.
Night with gallery frozen in Titanium Backup (5% in 10 hours):

I have the Xiaomi.eu version (which has the updated weather app I've been waiting for, so it's based off this release) with Xmister's CPU handling app and there were no surprises with this update, battery-wise or performance.
Through OTA i got 940MB update for this 6.1.8. It is not incremental update size, more like full rom size. How about you guys? I still didn't update it yet.

If you have the xiaomi.eu rom it's normal. Xiaomi.eu release only full roms as OTA updates, even if nothing has changed

Beta ROM does get full ROM update. Incremental updates are available with Stable ROM only as of now.

Can you please tell which Stable version are you using and what is your Screen on Time and with what kind of usage. I was only getting 2 hours of Screen on time with MIUI7 7.0.12.0, so I installed Custom ROM Angel's and Demons and it gives me nearly 4-5 hours SOT.

Global Roms don't have root access because they contain google services..

Mate 8 NXT-AL10 B592 Clean Stock & Custom ROM TWRP Backups / Battery Life Comparison

Mate 8 NXT-AL10 B592 Clean Stock & Custom ROM TWRP Backups / Battery Life Comparison
Hey guys!
So i finished uploading the clean install TWRP backups of B592 Stock and the three currently available custom roms for our beloved Mate 8 phones!
TWRP Backup Details:
- Clean installation of B592 Stock ROM
- No Apps removed, only settings changed are: Display set to 10 min / Developer Options enabled / USB Debugging enabled
- Custom ROM clean install: Clean B592 Stock as base install, followed by TWRP flash of respective custom ROM on top
- TWRP backups cover ALL available partitions
HowTo Installation:
- Make sure you are on the latest Nougat Stock ROM of your respective Model and Cust
- Install the latest TWRP 3.1.1 via fastboot or your currently installed TWRP (download available further down)
- Important: BACKUP! BACKUP! BACKUP! Make a full backup of ALL partitions of your current ROM, just in case something goes wrong
- Check the location youve saved the ROM backup to: You will see that inside the TWRP/Backups folder there is now a folder with a custom name connected to your phone. Inside THAT folder the actual backup folder resides. Example in my case: Ive saved my TWRP backups to the external SD --> /TWRP/Backups/CJL5T15C180xxx/NXT-AL10 B592 Stock/
Thus, the actual backup files for the partitions reside in the Backup folder "NXT-AL10 B592 Stock", which I have named during the Backup Process in TWRP
- Download the TWRP Clean Install Backup of your choice from the Download link provided below
- Unpack the downloaded zip (THIS IS NOT A FLASHABLE ZIP! IT WILL NOT WORK BY JUST FLASHING IN TWRP!)
- Copy the unpacked folder into /TWRP/Backups/(Folder with custom name specific to your phone)/ as mentioned above
- Do a manual wipe of ALL partitions EXCEPT internal storage and sd card (this is NOT the standard complete wipe, you have to MANUALLY select all partitions yourself!)
- After the wipe, DO NOT REBOOT
- Go back to Main menu, go to restore and select the backup you have previously copied into the TWRP/Backups/"Custom name" folder
- Reboot and profit
Note: Since I have made all of the TWRP Backups with a NXT-AL10 phone and cust I cannot guarantee that all backups will work on all phone models and cust regions! So try for yourself and please report back
Edit: Reported to work on L09 phones! I still need confirmation for L29 guys

Battery Life Comparison
Since I now have easy access to Stock and custom clean installs of B592 I wanted to include a battery life comparison. So I did the following:
- PCMark Work 2.0 Test as base for battery life testing
- Measurement of time it takes for battery to go from 100% to 20%
- Settings: Wifi+BT+GPS off, Mobile Data on 3G, Display screen on full brightness, CPU/GPU Stock
- Aside from PCMark, no other Apps have been installed or removed from respective Clean Install State of each ROM
NOTE: I set display to maximum brightness to have a specific point to compare to on all roms (due to lack of a brightness meter). Plus, it doesnt take so long for the test to finish compared to minimum brightness
Be aware that all Benchmark comparisons found online are based on a display brightness of 200 nits, so you CANNOT compare these results with others!
For fun and comparison´s sake, I also included my current ROM, which is based on the DL00 B592 Stock TWRP Backup provided elsewhere in the Mate 8 section, with B592 Kangvip v2 flashed on top. Be aware that this is my daily driver, so a lot of tweaks, app changes, setting changes, etc have been applied! Short Rundown: CPU on Powersaver Governor, Mobile Data on 3G, Wifi+BT off, GPS on battery saving, tweaked App permissions and battery options, etc.
Results so far:
Daily Driver DL00 B592 with B592 Kangvip v2

ha, its just in my own self interest
only for LA10?
Thank you very much for this great work. It's nice to see that we can revive the community here. The mate 8 isn't that old yet. I wish you that many users here participate.

I ran the test at night. After three hours it was over. Battery to 0%. Then I had the battery checked by a technician. He's not okay. I'm gonna order a new one. As soon as it arrives, I will repeat the test. In the meantime I look at the other roms.

lucky us battery replacement in the mate 8 is not as complicated as in other phones i bet my battery is not at 100% anymore either, but its still going strong for everyday usage
next up is your rom tonight, curious to see the result

yes and no! Not sure, to be honest. The stock B592 could have problems on other custs, but the custom roms should be compatible with all custs. You can always change your cust to AL10 or try one of the custom roms in any case: backup your current rom first, then u can easily try all four roms and report back to us which ones do work on your model and cust
The v5 works on all custs. It only exchanges the kernel and the system. Everything else remains unaffected

but that goes only if one flashes the V5 from your thread. my TWRP backups contain all partitions of the phone. so it could be that only chinese models would be able to crossflash them. still, it would be nice if someone tried and reported back on L29 / L09 models
Okay, I didn't know.

@paulcl that was only a single run right? the scores in the OP are averages of all the runs during the 5+ hours the battery life tests ran
I know that my battery is bad, but since the test the battery consumes 1% per minute.

omg *lol* sounds like you killed your battery with PCMark? when are you getting the replacement?
finished testing your rom btw, will update the OP shortly
I ordered the battery from amazon. It'll take a few days. In the meantime I use my Honor 6x premium. The battery lasts for two days.
Thanks for the test. Just as I expected. It's got the stock kernel and I haven't set anything on the cpu settings to save battery life. I'm satisfied.

at the same time though, its got the best scores so far once im through with all roms im planning to debloat them and apply some battery tweaks, then do another test run, this time with display brightness minimized
im aware this will take a lot longer, but the influence of system related settings will be vastly greater. with the display brightness at maximum, the display energy consumption overtakes everything else.

Yes, this was after 2 runs.
Here after battery life tests (some hours), no big difference.

Hi "jbmc83" and thank you for your work :good:
I test that :
in kang tool in tune CPU GPU when choosing "power save 4 code" give fantastic battery life specially with deep sleep :good: and It doesn't affect much on the phone performance.
Started revising and renewing my v5.

interesting! i hadnt tried that before, because i thought it would impact the performance too much with that setting, youre deactivating the four performance cores, so turning your mate 8 from an octa- into a quadcore basically.
@ChinHon looking forward to your changes
didnt come around to more testing, but next up is kangvip v3

Facing similar issue, can open 'Home screen & Recents' setting, it's important for me, but I need Google Camera too, so cannot switch to MIUI 10 for now, thinking about going back to 9.5.11
