Has anyone tried the APN settings for AT&T that were used for the SGS2? Its the same as our AT&T US HSDPA but it doesn't have any of the APN type settings. I gave it a try and am downloading at a constant 2Mbps faster (during regular traffic hours was getting 3.xxMbps now getting 5.xxMbps). Here's the link give it a try see if it works for all of us.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109983
To clear up some of the confusion this APN is for the faster AT&T H+ speeds if you don't have the backhaul in your area yet this will probably make no difference.
Now as far as what I did, I did not delete all my APN's like the link I posted said (since our APN's work) I just added a new one named it whatever I wanted then under APN put phone that's it. Since our phones don't have the "internet only" in a drop down you leave that blank and since we have an mms APN already you leave that part of the instructions out as well. Hope this helps with the confusion a bit.

I just tried it and actually saw a 1-3 Mbps improvement with his recommendations. (ran 2 tests using phone son and 3 tests using default wap.Cingular son)

That was the problem, thanks.
Doesn't work, It caps me at 4Mbps, the default gets me around 5-6Mbps.
edit: I just deleted the VPN type. I'm now getting 7Mbps at 3:30 am NY
Eh, I noticed a little jump. Not to the point that it's monumental, but around .8mbps.
to a total of 1.6mbps hahaha
It pretty unstable, I think someone in the GS2 topic said this.
I'll get 1Mbps in one test, and 10Mbps the next.

Since you are on the OTA, could you list each field verbatim?
I have tested this time and time again with this APN I am hitting anywhere from 1-3Mbps (more like a consistent 2Mbps) faster and this is same test ran at the same time back to back with my phone im the exact same position every time. Now this APN is for faster AT&T H+ speeds if you don't have the backhaul in your area yet this will probably make no difference.

For those of you that are using the true unbranded/unlocked Galaxy S from the UK here in the states, here are the MMS/Internet settings.
Go to Settings/Wireless and network/Mobile Networks/Access Point Names
Hit the menu button, then "new APN". The settings are as follows:
Name: AT&T (or whatever name you like)
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank (Will read: <not set>)
Port: leave blank (Will read: <not set>)
User name: [email protected] (Not sure if it's case sensitive, but I left it all capital letters)
Password: CINGULAR1 (Not sure if it's case sensitive, but I left it all capital letters)
Sever: leave blank (Will read: <not set>)
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: none
APN type: internet+mms
I initially started researching this after I wasn't able to send or receive MMS. I could send regular text messages just fine though. I read posts all over the place and none of them were really defnitive in regards to the Galaxy S' settings. I tried some configurations that would allow me to send and receive MMS, but then the Internet wouldn't work. In other cases I would get the Internet but no MMS.
So after putting it all together, and trying a bunch of different configurations, the above is what I've confirmed as working. Just wanted to share so others don't have to spend the time I did.
Hope it helps.

Yes I do get 3G on mine. My display pretty much constantly has an "H" near the signal indicator. I'm assuming that's for HSPDA.
Have you tested by sending a MMS to yourself?
hmm....let me try that next, but i did receive a few earlier today (dunno if that makes a difference). Just did my first battery drain so i'm letting it heal while i read up some more. As my first android device, i'm loving it!

Here would have an updated map with the band u need ...
http://gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml
I just noticed that I'm still kinda' hit and miss with receiving MMS. A friend of mine just tried to send me a short video from Verizon and it just says "downloading". It will probably remain like that for a while.
This MMS thing is getting frustrated. I also noticed this morning that I couldn't send an MMS to my friend that is on AT&T also. I knew I just sent an MMS earlier though and it worked. I sent one to myself and it worked. So what I did was look at the "To" field. I noticed that the one that worked had "1+" in front of the area code then number. One more frickin' thing to figure out!
@BuddyLee Thanks for the map. It looks like they have the 850/1900 combined into one color so I can't really differentiate if i'm only getting 850 here.
@TMW597 so i forced the phone to only connect using 3G..sure enough it came up. With the "H" as well but i get 1 measly bar of it so i must be on the outskirts of that 1900 broadcast. time to take a drive and see how it fares.
Glad to hear it! One bar is still 3G baby!!!
Cool app by the way. http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.sensorly.viewer
I probably shouldn't have darted out the door as soon as i finished typing my last post.
Found out that there's 1900 broadcasting to my NE only..went there and was brimming with 3G. http://twitpic.com/249wau (i should probably get a screenshot app)
of course this pic is after i got home and relegated back to edge and wifi thus the icon
On your Speed Test app, go to the settings tab at the top and change your display to display speeds in Mbps.
I use this for my screen grab app. You just shake the phone to capture the screen. I only turn it on when I need to use it though. I don't leave it on all of the time.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.bw.picme.local
done...link updated
That looks to me like it's on WiFi. I see the WiFi indicator on at the top of your screen shot. Turn the WiFi off and run it again.
Edge http://twitpic.com/24a5m3
3G http://twitpic.com/24a5ri
WiFi http://twitpic.com/249ywi
now...onto rooting and more!
Damn your 3G is blazin'!!!
EDIT: Oops, it seems I had to enable data roaming....
Thanks for posting this information! What type of data plan do you have on your at&t account?
I have the old mediamax 200 plan and I was wondering if I could get a Captivate from at&t and change the settings accordingly without changing my data plan.
Anyone with any helpful info please feel free to respond. Thanks!

Hi. TMW597. The "H" means you are on your "Home" network. If you were roaming, you would get a "R" for "Roaming".

Actually the 'H' to the left of your signal strength bars is for HSDPA not home. It designates that you are on 3.5G, if you were on UMTS you would see 3G instead of the letter H.

+1 for MN data outage. Good news is, I have a fresh install of Nero V5...
Just flashed Nero v5 last night and data worked great, but none this morning. In Minneapolis, MN.
I'm in the Dallas area too. My wife's Vibe is running KA5 and is having no data issues with the old epc.tmobile.com settings. More than likely a t-mo problem that's sporadic.
--Edit--
Just for the hell of it, I switched back to epc and data is still working. Tmo must be having issues.
Was just about to try the other APN and my data started working again.

All,
I've read several instances and/or rumors of bandwidth capping with the 1.8.3 update. I even had the experience of losing my network data altogether until I figured out why.
As such I thought it may be helpful to start a thread for those on 1.8.3 that can provide: 1) radio version; 2) APN settings; and 3) download / upload speeds (on average). You can get the radio version via Settings >> About phone >> "Baseband version"; APN settings via Settings >> Wireless & networks >> Mobile networks >> Access point names; download / upload speeds via the speedtest.net application.
My information is as follows:

Same and I never lose data and the speeds in Seattle are about 4.6 mbps DOWN and 1.x mbps UP.
I'm not sure I understand......but showing speeds isn't going to do much in the way of giving us a feel on what is going on. What I mean is download and upload speeds can vary by a very large standard, because it all depends on how many bars, what servers you're hitting, how many people are also using that node, etc.

Of course their different. You guys are looking at two different apn. The first person apn settings are from the regular att network setting. And the second person apn is from the att us hspda setting. And the speeds may be different because you need to have the 4g internet data plan on ur account in order in have the att us hspda apn.

I had no APN after SBFing, factory resetting, etc. so I had to make up an APN based on what I had seen in some places. I'll try the other APN in the thread and see if it makes a difference (better or worse).
Point of the thread really was to assess whether there was consistent limiting going on and if people suddenly lost data connectivity (as I did) they could fix via created one of these APNs.

I know I had to hunt forever to find these so I thought I would post them to make it easier for anyone flashing custom firmware. Every time I reflash or do a factory reset it deletes my APN settings and apparently AT&T's technical support doesn't know how to set them up. They actually referred me to Motorola. Anyways, here they are.
You can also use the attached zip along with APN Manager from the market. I don't recall who posted the original zip so thanks anonymous internet savior.

Thanks a ton !! This saved me bigtime !! Alien V4 only gave me 1 apn (AT&T 310 410), and this restored all of the stock ones.
Only question is, should I select 'att us' or 'att us hsdpa' ?
Thanks !
I default to hsdpa, but both should work fine in theory
Tune it to the HSDPA I have seen better results with this setting but yes either one can be ok.. I just prefer knowing that I do have HSDPA so assume you have the same thing Cheers..
has anyone run speed tests to confirm better speeds? I have att and att tethering apns, does the hsdpa have better download or is it already intergrated into the one I have?
It should be the same. You can got to speedtest.net to confirm. When you enter the URL from your phone it will redirect you to the Android market. At that point you will be able to download the speedtest app. You may also be able to just search for it in the market.

I run the speed test on mine I was getting about 1.5mbps down and 1.0 up with wap.Cingular, and with hsdpa I got 3.2 down and up. That fairly comparable to what others are seeing? Havent tried it while connected to wifi yet...
Does this mean I will not use HSDPA when I tether?
What is the purpose of the tether APN?
reactivating data
since yesterday when i was trying to refresh my contacts, i managed to mess up my wireless data connection. i am unable to reconnect. i have reflashed and reinstalled all apns...rebooted phone etc, but cant get wireless data back. any thoughts on why?

The ATT-Tether APN wil flag the traffic as requiring a tethering plan. If the phone is un-hacked this is how ATT blocks the tethering for those who have not bought it.
The key is
APN Boadband.
which can only be used if you bought the tethering plan.
While the generally available option
APN PHONE
Is what everybody can use.

Exactly, the tether is specifically for tethering. From what I saw when I had the tethering plan was that it still had the same speed but it connects to a different system that is designed for tethering. I think the main difference is so that it doesn't route your computer to WAP sites. It uses isp.cingular instead of wap.cingular.

Sorry if I asked a very noobish question...it's my first time using T-Mobile and owning a Nexus 4. I lived here in Houston area. My question is how do I set the APN for T-MOBILE HSPA+? I bought a activation sim kit at walmart and cut it into micro simcard size...then install it into my Nexus 4...setup the account for $30/month . 100min, unli txt, unli 4G data. Also it only shows 3G or H sometimes... in my signal bar. When I downloaded the Speedtest.net ...data speed results are quite disappointing just about 0.23mbs download and 1.36mbs upload . ,I checked the APN settings....it was already preset i guess. I saw t-mobile apn in there already. Did I miss something? I checked T-Mobile 4G coverage map...and it says my neighborhood is covered. hmmmm...Help pls. I ordered a replacement micro sim. maybe that helps? for $0.99
It's on by default, 42 is theoretical. It doesn't mean that you'll get those speeds.

In busy areas, those speeds are normal. In NYC around Times Sq, I'll get the same exact results.

My speedtests far about averaging 6-8mbps but reached up to 14mbps at work. Pretty neat IMO.

Its the exchange you get trading data speed for better battery life and not having Verizon delaying updates on a Nexus device
The most I got was 13Mb today. Could get more but haven't done a speed test everywhere

thanks for sharing... Mr. nice guy., but it has the same results ...with the one I'm using at first; the apn setting that came along with the simcard.
The speeds on HSPA+ are really not that bad. It might appear bad when coming from LTE. I've never used lte before so I can't really comment but it's enough to satisfy my needs. Download some roms here and there in a speedy manner

Go get a real microsim from T-Mobile and your speeds should be better.

Well I don't , do u live in downtown ? I'm in baytown part. It sucks... My micro simcard will be shipped this coming wed. Maybe that will fix my slow data speed. Since I just bought the regular Sim and cut it to micro Sim size. Lol
I just got 19 MB download speed. You should be getting much better than 0.25 MB in houston on T-Mobile

I feel your pain ,. lol. well. maybe T-Mobile should advertise & update their 4G network coverage area. As of now I;m just gonna use my home wifi Verizon fios... 70mbps will suit my needs. Also Nexus 4 can run on 5ghz wifi band. . I will go to the mall to morrow and try the speed test...If i see some improvement.
