[Q] I still have S-Off - EVO 4G General

After all the moaning and groaning about loosing root after the OTA I bothered to lauch into boot loader today and check my "S" status, and it is OFF. does this mean that i can flash a custom recovery? If so, where can I find a flashable version of Clockwork or amon?
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Put this file on the root of your sdcard and boot into the bootloader.

thanks I'll try that out when I get home.

If you used unrevoked forever to achieve root, you will not lose s-off from an ota. After receiving an ota you can simply flash a PC36IMG of a custom recovery and then flash the latest superuser.zip from your recovery.

Thanks guys, i got it done but had troubles with superuser not flashing. Had to go to androidsu.com and get the ginger compatible version. Didnt even know there was such a thing. Only issue now is that it kicks an error in rom manager when trying to fix permissions. Any ideas?

I think you need to flash a rom now. I don't think you can add superuser to the recent OTA. Once you flash a rom, you will be rooted, just not on stock (unless you flash the stock GB).

Remove rom manager and reinstall it. when you try to fix permissions this time you'll see the SU prompt to accept.

You need to flash a rooted rom now... Soff does not provide you with SU permissions inside stock rom.

Thats what Im doing next, uninstalling it and reinstalling. It does currently get su permission, but something just may not be right.
You can have su on the OTA, you just have to go to androidsu.com and select the version for gingerbread. Worked for me....

Try downloading titanium backup from the market. when it first loads click on problems at the bottom. this will install the newest version of busybox which may help the rom manager issue.

Sorry, edit...

Could it be from trying to run fix permissions in Rom Manager but having Amon Ra loaded? Or maybe still the wrong version of SU? I believe there's an app in the market by the same guy to fix Superuser version.

sorry if this has been asked but im new to a lot of this stuff and i wanted to put the vibrant6 rom that just came out on my vibrant and i was wandering that if i dont like it are just want to take it off i can do a restore from rom manager. I would of course use rom manager to backup my rom first. Also if i do this and keep it will i still get the OTA updates. It looks like this rom is keeping the stock kernal and that im sure if i changed that then i would not get the updates. I just a little nervouse about this. Thank you

Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing!
I downloaded the vibrant6 zip from the 4shared that I was directed to and it took all of a second to download which I know was way to fast. I went to unzip it and it was unsuccessful I don't know why. So even if I wanted to do this I can't.

Obviously to install Vibrant 6 you need to flash stock rom, then flash vibrant6 with odin.
When I decided to go back to stock rom I flashed stock rom with odin then ran nandroid restore of a point I had made right before trying Vibrant6.
I flashed vibrant6 via clockwork and it worked just fine, you just have to have a stock rom with root for it to work properly
But does it need to be unzip first.

No it doesn't, its an update.zip.
OP just download the file and place it on the root of your internal SDcard. Reboot into recovery and flash it from there.
If you uninstall clockworkmod recovery you might get OTA updates but it depends on the rom you are using. With any alternative recovery you may be able to download the OTA, but it will not flash because of the recovery. I dont know why people worry about OTA updates! If its being sent OTA, I guarantee it will be on XDA months before! If you want OTAs, leave your phone stock.

1) root the device and turn s=off. Threads in the development section
2) visit the Cyanogen mod CM7 thread
[sent via Cyanogen powered Android]
Root your phone via one of the many available methods although the gfree has seemed to have some issues. I'd recommend visionary method. Once you have root and have S-off install Rom manager via the market and flash clockwork (and correct me if I'm wrong as I get confused a lot with recoveries build #'s lol) mod recovery version 2.5.1.2, 3.0.0.5 or 3.0.0.6. 3.0.0.6 is the best available currently. After flashing clockwork in Rom manager (its the first thing that pops up) scroll to download Rom and download cyanogen mod 7 rc4 from that menu. (You will have finished downloading the rom and have booted into recovery by now) MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE PRECEDING. Then Wipe data and cache via recovery and then go to install zip via SD card then choose it again find the .zip file for cm7 and hit install. It WILL take awhile to install. After it finishes reboot. Again this will take awhile. Once it comes up, wait 3 minutes or so then reboot. Then set up and your good to go. Once you've done that its basically rinse repeat for other roms. But remember to read the roms flashing instructions before hand as it may have some wacky process for flashing. Good luck!

Not to nitpick, but 3.0.2.4 is the latest version. It just came out the other day, so that's probably why you're not aware.
EDIT: To the OP, like neidlinger said, your first step is to root. This is the guide I followed and it works great: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021.

Once you're finished with that tutorial, you'll be rooted and have a custom recovery installed. At that point, create a Nandroid backup, and then wipe all three items in the recovery menu and install the custom ROM. There is no direct Nexus S port to the MT4G, but CM7 and RoyalGinger are essentially the same thing, and in fact better, so check those out in the dev section.

ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.0

I haven't seen anything about the updated ClockworkMod Recovery here on XDA, and I'm not sure if many others know about it. =P
Update: ClockworkMod Recovery for the Droid X has been updated to 5.0.2.0. A new blue recovery!
WARNING: This can be used on both 2nd init and blur roms; however, on blur roms you must first use Droid 2 Bootstrapper to bootstrap.
EDIT: Make sure that you're ROM Manager is up-to-date. A new version was just released that fixes bugs with flashing the new recovery.
Open ROM Manager and select 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery'.
When it asks you to confirm your device select 'Droid X (2nd init)' or 'Droid X', respective to your current rom.
It should then download and install ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.0.
Reboot hy holding the power button and selecting Reboot > recovery, or rebooting to recovery from ROM Manager. Enjoy your new blue recovery ^_^
EDIT: In MIUI on the Defy base you must use `CWM Recovery' from the reboot menu to access ClockworkMod Recovery.

Thank you Captain Obvious j/k
I get kind of tired of hearing my wife say "what are you doing to your phone now?" if I reinstall a ROM too much in one week LOL
Yea still no luck
Did the following (based on a suggestion in the Rootzwiki forum):
- Fully removed RM & the Premium license files
- rebooted
- reinstalled RM & Premium license
- Cleared Download cache in RM
- re-installed CWM 2.5.0.8 (chose Droid X)
- Cleared Download Cache
- updated CWM to 4.0.0.5 (choosing DX 2nd-init)
- reboot
- no luck
Gonna try removing RM again & going straight to CWM 4.0.0.5 to see if that works.

I got mine working now An update came out (v4.3.2.3) which mentioned a fix for this exact problem & it updated properly for me too. I did notice that cache partition wiping is not as fast as v2.5.0.8 but who cares...IT'S ORANGE!
I know right, that is some sexy orange. One thing though is I've heard that you can only use backups made with 4.0.0.5, haven't actually run into myself since I cull my backups every once and a while to free up SD card space, and that some update zips won't work anymore because the new clockwork requires another file inside of it, my memory is failing me on what that file exactly is.
How is the 2nd inti different from Koushs recovery? I heard it had something specifically to do with CM7. But why cant they use the normal CWM. Wasn't obsidian able to use the regular CWM it was almost pure AOSP besides the kernel. So why the change? Just curious why it is needed.

MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP ANY USEFUL INFORMATION OR APPS FROM YOUR PHONE, BECAUSE YOUR ROM IS GOING TO BE WIPED.
First download the attachment. Remove the numbers from the name of the file so that it is renamed PC36IMG and place this on the root of your SD card. Power off the phone, then boot into your bootloader by holding the volume down and power buttons at the same time. Accept the update. If everything went OK, that should get rid of that Revolutionary at the top of your bootloader and flash the phone back to S-ON.
Next remove the file from your SD card by either rebooting your phone or going into your RECOVERY. I'm not going to give all the details for this.
Next, download this file.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VSFLE9CD
Rename it PC36IMG, place it on your SD card and follow the same steps as you did with the first PC36IMG file.
Let me know if that worked, because how to unroot the phone has seemed to be forgotten around here. Everyone is just happy to root.

That doesn't work completely for Gingerbread.
You can downgrade the ROM back to Froyo, but the S-ON tool will not work with the new bootloader, and the bootloader will not downgrade by running any of the PC36IMG Froyo files or RUUs if Revolutionary was used to turn S-OFF.
Assuming that you mean to unroot and regain S-OFF on an Evo 4G that was rooted using Revolutionary...
It seems that this has been worked out.

You need to flash an unrooted stock ROM to roll back your HBOOT to an upgradable version. I assume you used the modded 6.17 HBOOT to S-ON, but didn't flash a stock ROM to restore your HBOOT to stock?
Because the modded HBOOT is a higher version number than Revolutionary, most likely it believes you're already rooted.
I used RUU to update my phone to latest stock Rom and flashed the attachment on this thread

You essentially have two options:
- Run the RUU (ROM Update Utility) for the latest stock ROM on your PC
- Flash the latest stock ROM, in PC36IMG.zip format through FastBoot

Lost Root after New ROM install

Ok, so... I'm not new to rooting, but i AM new to rooting a nexus 7.
I had it all rooted and installed Baked's new ROM, and it gave me superuser permission when I booted into the OS the first time.. but then I restarted the nexus and bam. root was gone, superuser no longer worked... had to reload my backup of my original rom, root is back again.
I'm running CWM touch as recovery (latest update) had OTA voodoo rootkeeper (which won't help though because its a fresh install right?)
Can anyone tell me what is going on? I'm a bit lost... usually when you root. You are rooted. period. This is a new game to me.
Use this program to root it again mate:

On the top left corner, it lets you choose your model and ROM.
Just choose custom ROM for any non official ROM's.

update youre superuser or supersu app. i suggest you get the supersu app from the market since superuser is a bit buggy on jelly bean. open the supersu app, itll ask to update the binaries, do it. no need wasting your time "rerooting".
No worries, glad I could help Unfortunately, I've not ventured into the different ROM's yet. Should really....... So I can't recommend any. Sorry Though I do like the look of the ones that have the real tablet UI, might try one of them in a few days.....

if you ever read that you have to reroot, think twice about it. rerooting is what people that dont know better say. as in this case, it was only a bad app.

that's what i was thinking.. I've rooted so many times before and once you're rooted. you're rooted unless an ota takes the root away, but... i was just installing roms... so weird... superuser just doesn't work well with Jelly?

I apologise if I was making it more difficult than it needed to be I've only used Xperia Arc before, it needs to be rooted again after every firmware change. Thanks for posting this too, now I know in the future

I thought I'd lost root, but after installing busy box and updating super user, it was fine

yup. it works, but with minor issues. supersu is working flawlessly. another thing to do is update your busybox, stericsons busybox updater in the play market works well, and is free.

with any nexus device, there really isnt a "rooting". from scratch all you need to do is fastboot oem unlock(bootloader), fastboot flash a custom recovery, and either flash the su binaries or a custom rom in your recovery. no root toolkits needed. thats whats awesome about any nexus.

Looks like I'll be considering a nexus for my next phone. Sony make everything more difficult than it should be......
