Factory Reset or Not? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

After listening to people who got the TW update in NYC yesterday, the GT seems to be running really fast and smooth, no more typing lag etc.
Seeing that these updates were side-loaded, therefore essentially wiping all data, would it be wise to do a factory reset before accepting the update OTA tomorrow.... opinions?

I think you should just backup all user data using either titanium backup or some other Apps from market.

I may have confused you, I'm not worried about it wiping my data (as it doesn't), but if having a clean factory reset and starting 'fresh' would be preferrable to get the most benifit from the update (smoothness and speed)?

You can always just factory reset after you get it, if it's not running to your satisfaction.

Titanium backup

So I really like Titanium Backup, but my question is... when you restore backed up apps, is there a way for them to auto install without having to click "install" and "done" for each and every single app you backed up? I have a lotta apps and it gets annoying when I restore. Thanks
Batch options? its under Backup/Restore hit menu soft key..
If I am not mistaken, if you have the paid for version, you can do it in batch mode, which I am assuming doesn't prompt you for each app.
Paid version does that, well worth the money.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I'm pretty sure even the free version does batch mode, how else would you back up all your apps at once? The paid version adds Dropbox sync functionality and is a bit faster, worth the money even without these extra features.
Paid version. Worth the chedder.
SyndicateROM v1.0.2 + Xtreme kernel v1.2.0 + Emotionless beast final = Great functionality, Exceptional performance, and Sweet eye candy.
Just to note: beware Titanium Backup. We've found it causes more problems than it solves, especially when restoring apps and data.

"we've"? Ive never had an issue as long as you don't restore stock apps. Or apps already part of the rom.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
The paid and free apps both do batch mode restores, but in the free app you have to click yes between each app. The paid app allows to start the restore and walk away while it finishes. Absolutely worth the price if you are trying our a lot of different roms every day. I've encountered zero issues with Titanium Backup...zero!

u can import saved data in clockworkmod and that will import your apps from before make sure u do backup first I tested and works every time

I have the paid version and I go to batch and pick restore all user apps plus data and it'll still ask me to hit install/done for each app and @Konane I've never had any problems with Titanium, Mybackup pro has been giving me headaches it freezes my phone when it gets to Beautiful Widgets and SNS app

Sorry for the confusion, when I use the collective "we" I'm speaking for ACS. The bugs usually crop up when one takes a backup from one ROM and restores it on another (dig through the SyndicateROM thread and you'll see several instances), but YMMV. We (ACS) don't recommend it for moving APKs between ROMs.
From my experience I just install the apks manually and then restore data via Titanium..as long as I'm using the Titanium's busy box it never failed once for restoring data.
As for clockworkmod restore method..I had it FC my Touchwiz going from DJ29 to DK17 and I was not using a custom theme or anything...
I think its all in what option you use to restore your apps and data.I find that using restore apps and all system data causes problems when going from rom to rom but if you use restore apps and data there are no problems with restoring your apps this is how I do it and have never had any problems.
Me too, I've never got MBP to complete sucessfully. So I've been using Titanium Backup, so far with no known problems.

just being curious

i dont think that the EB13 update that was posted by samsung on the website is the real thing....to be honest i think that is just another test release from the looks of it because they are pushing an update out via OTA that you have to wait for......i mean i messing with the one that samsung posted up and all of the things that it was suppose to fix is not fixed.......im going to wait for the OTA
I think it's already been confirmed in the OTA status thread that it's the same thing from Samsung's website...
EDIT: I guess it has not been confirmed yet. Anybody with an OTA update care to confirm or deny?
Suite yourself, killer, but you're the only person I've seen who's expressed that opinion ever since Samsung got the correct EB13 files up. Yes, at first they had some EB01 files listed, as well as had some misnamed as KB13, but for ~15 hours now they've had EB13 posted, and many people on XDA, including experienced developers, have downloaded, flashed, and started digging into EB13. I feel pretty sure it's the real deal.
I think that the majority of people's issues are coming from bad upgrades/flashes, and they need to A) clear cache (including Dalvik if they're using CWM) and B) if the issues persist they should do a clean wipe/flash.

Clearing the cache is stuff you do when you don't have the official stuff....you shouldn't have to go through all that trouble if it was the official release.....idk.....im going to wait for the OTA and see if there is any difference.....just to be sure
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
just get it off Samsung's site. it works perfect took 2 minutes to install and have no issues whatsoever
Have anyone even gotten the update via OTA
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
im waiting for the OTA , and not received it yet. im a very patient person
If it's not official, then GalaxySSupport shouldn't be tweeting that it is.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Its the official. The ota is pushed from sprint. Thats the only difference. We may receive small patches and things for other bugs but this is the official froyo for our phones.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I got the ota and I'm having issues no camera,no pics in gallery but they are still on my sd card, no music player I got a player from the market and it works so my music is on my sd card. The music icon is pink also not sure if it is supose to be.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
i know the Syndicate development team is waiting for the OTA version before they dig in and do their thing. it might just be a precaution, i really don't know myself. i'm waiting on the OTA so i can send it to them, but if anyone has it, they could do that first. of course once you install it i think it might be too late.
It has been confirmed in multiple threads, there is just 200 pages to sort through since it's release. The files are the EXACT same.

Yea there appears to be an issue with eb14 reading media files. Apparently formatting you memory card then reloading your files resolves that.

No, clearing cache is stuff you do when you want to eliminate the possibility of a preexisting mess screwing up your experience. The only time an OS upgrade will work 100% perfectly and smoothly is by doing a wipe and clean install. If you just flash overtop of what you already have, expect complications.
This is true of all OSes. A clean Ubuntu install will always be more worryproof than upgrading from, say, 9.10 to 10.10. A clean Windows 7 SP1 install will always be smoother than installing SP1 on top of an existing Windows 7 gold install.
At any rates, wipes and clean installs shouldn't be scary or 'unnecessary' to regulars on this forum. It was a whole terrifying 10 minutes of work to resync my phone and get my apps downloading.

No worries here. Root, then use Titanium Backup to save your apps and data. Flash, crash or trash your phone, but just reroot and use Titanium to restore it. And you get your Birds data back.

Yep - it's keyed off of the build signature. Just wait a few days until the market servers are updated for the new build that was OTA'd. This happens with seemingly every OTA (happened on the Nexus One as well). Mainly protected apps will be missing.
happened to me everything synced up except for apps did a factory reset and everything came back. i was pissed when all that showed were my paid apps but after the reset all apps paid and free appeared and restored on their own.
Instead of doing a total data wipe go through settings_apps_manage apps and wipe data and cache for just the market app. alot less headaches ;p

I wouldnt think so the flashaholics and devs flash more than once in a day sometimes, when i was trying different things with Supreme, i would format system/data/cache and wipe dalvik sometimes 3 times a day and reflash because i had an error
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
its perfectly fine, i do it all the time testing different things on my transform and ive never had a problem from factory resetting it. hoping to be able to be a flashaholic again soon with the shift
I suppose it could over the long run. I think it would take quite a while. Because I've been doing full wipes, and factory resets. Testing stuff, reflashing because of errors, or just dev stuff. For a while now, zero adverse effects.
There have been debates about this in every forum on XDA I'm pretty sure haha. The general consensus from what I've read is this. NAND memory does have a lifespan, that much is a fact. It is most people's opinion, however, that even above average flashaholics will not reach this lifespan in the couple of years they have their phone.

That can be pretty bad, yes . What precisely do each of the various wipe/resets accomplish? I.e., factory, dalek, memory cache, partition reset, etc.
Thanks

Factory wipes you /data and /cache which data is where your apps and random user stuff is stored, your cache is your cache... Your dalvik from what I understand is what makes android android, that's where all your widgets and what not reside, /system wipes your system files and formats it, of you wipe that you need to flash another rom cuz your phone won't boot other wise... If i have anything wrong please correct me, but ya

How long have you been working in ezPDF since you reset it? I'm tempted to do this as well, but backing up, reinstalling and reorganizing all my stuff would be time consuming. I'd hate to go through this only to find that EZPDF is still crashing and slow.

No, I'm ascared to root my Note. I depend on it too much to take any risks and I don't really have the time to look into rooting right now. It is something I'm curious about though.
Rooting isn't a major thing. Changing the ROM is a different story. Nothing to be scared of when it comes to rooting.

The apparent key is to factory reset after the updates. Not had this issue with any previous Android device, so could be a poor firmware design issue by the 2014 Samsung dev team.
If I buy one in the next few weeks, I will update to the current firmware, FR and THEN put my apps on. I will probably avoid updates after that.... :silly:

See though, that's one of the reasons many of us bought this tablet, we want those features and S Pen integration. What we need is way to make those work better, not eliminate them.

I haven't heard of anyone having any issues with root on this tablet, the only way I could see issues cropping up is by flashing a custom ROM.
