I have a lot of apps installed, and while Go Launcher does indeed allow me to add more icons than the MotoBlur launcher, sometimes I need that odd app that I haven't pinned to the home screen.
Google Search -- the app itself, that launches through the search button when you're at the home screen -- allows searching for installed apps and launching them directly, as long as you type the first few letters of the program.
I got used to this on my old Nexus One, especially with CM7, which allowed me to long press the Search button and it would launch GSearch no matter where I was. After finding a way to do this via a third party helper utility on the Atri, I can launch Search via a long press, but the app search itself works about 1/3 of the time. Most of the time it returns nothing.
I may be in the minority of users who use search to launch apps, but when I have around 150 installed apps, it's a pain to have to look through the launcher every time you need a particular app.
On Froyo, the app search feature was also buggy, and was hoping they would fix it by now, but on GB it's the same story.
Anyone experience this as well?
Click the search button then the top left icon and on the top right click on the preference button ..make sure app search is checked.
Works fine for me. Give me an app that doesn't work for you and I'll be glad to try it.
Xda app via atrix
I've enabled it, disabled web and contacts search, so app search results should be the only thing coming up.
What I mean is not that a particular app doesn't come up, but rather that the search functionality stops working all together. As in, no matter what I type, nothing is returned in the search results. I can't figure what triggers this. I just rebooted the phone and it's working fine, and as I continue using the phone, it will stop working.
At the end of the day, it's just a nuisance that can be worked around, but it was a neat little shortcut I got used to.
i have about 75 or so apps installed, so i kinda know your pain. but, the search feature has always worked for me in the past, currently using ninja speed freak 0.4.5 with Faux's kernel.
do you have any mods/roms installed on your Atrix?
Deblured by freezing some Motorola processes and of course rooted. Nothing else, and like I said, it works, but only some of the time.
I would suggest checking it after it's been a while since last reboot to see if you can reproduce the problem.
This happened in Froyo as well, and on my previous Atrix, so it's definitely reproducible between phones and different OS versions.
Well. At least you can use the app groupings!

I also had such issue till now. just now i tried going to the setting of search and unselected selected apps and google search. it now work.. may be the setting got refreshed.. u may try this..
Works completely fine for me. Could be something your freezing that makes it buggy? Or maybe GoLauncher?
ive always had the same issue, on stock, roms, whatever i'm running. I would search for an app, and the only thing that would show up is the term i typed in with a magnifying glass (signifying searching the web). I'd go into search settings and make sure APPs are checked... then i search again, and the apps show up!
I find I have to constantly go into search settings and then press back for applications to show up. it's annoying. It ends up working though, but why can't it work the first time?
Seems to me that something so basic should not be so buggy by version 2.3.4 of an OS. Maybe once we get CM7 it won't be a problem anymore, based on my experience with it on my n1.

Hem, that does work, thank you. It's still annoying that searching "all" doesn't work, but the "apps" sub category does, but I'll just have to get used to it till they get it working correctly.
Works just fine for me, 4.5.91 installed ota (rooted w/ preinstall, no bl unlock)

Anyone actually use the Genius button on a regular basis ?
Anyone else find it to be a stupid useless waste of space like I do ?
Discuss/your thoughts on it.
we have a Genius Button??? i havent even touch it once! USELESS for me, would love to find a way to remove the function and put something else that is usefull.
There is a thread in the dev section IIRC on how to remap it. I've tried it a few times, but it does not seem entirely useful or time saving.
I used it in the car when running stock. At the moment I'm using cm7 and it's mapped to Google Voice Search, which is similar in capability.
HTC Glacier running CM7 #28
Never used it while I was stock. In CM I have it remaped.

There are plenty of ways to remove it and you can actually use that button to open any app you want. Interested in how? Check out the button mod thread in my signature.

If you are having a problem with it verifying your contact list often try this:
When it activates and asks you to speak push the menu button. It will pull up the Settings and from there you can turn off the contact verification by going into Phonebook Updates and selecting manual. Or make some other adjustments to help speed it up a little.
I tried it and it worked well, but it takes 20 seconds for it to startup initially, and isn't very fast even after that.
So I remapped the keys so a press gives me search and a press-hold gives me voice search instead of the Genius Button app. Now I use it and find it useful. I'm tempted to see if I can turn it into a dialer button so I can always get to the phone app, since this is a phone....
using it to activate google voice search is better for me.

Dude, what are you talking about? It dont take more than one second to open. I press the button and it opens just as fast as google voice search would. You need to go into Settings/Phonebook Updates and set it to manual. Then it wont try to update your contacts every few times you use it.

When we mentioned it taking forever to open, we weren't talking about the contact list updates. Mine has been on manual since I bought the phone. The app opens right away, but it doesn't actually start listening for commands, for at least 30 seconds, if not sometimes more. It isn't scanning or doing anything else you can turn off, it's just VERY laggy to start listening.

Hmmm...wierd, I dont have that problem at all. It starts listening as soon as I hit the button and the app opens. I even just tested it again and timed it with my stop watch.. From the time I longpress my button and it vibrates to open Genius it took 3.7 seconds for it to open and say "listening", me say "open rom manager" and it repeated it back to me and opened it. That is total time from the button press to when Rom Manager was actually open.
I am not sure what rom you guys are running or if you are rooted or not but if it is taking 5, 10, or 20 seconds for it to accept a command from you, then u got something going on. I am on CM7.
I am not here to argue with anyone over the opinion of a app. To each his own. But what I dont like to see is someone calling a app a useless waste of space, when it isn't. It is just like any other app, some people use and like it and some dont.

Mine took:
20 seconds the first time, 4 seconds the second time (I found the shorter time didn't last all that long in actual use). Yes, I had it on the default setting of updating contacts automatically. I don't see why I should have to change a default and give up the functionality for it to work. Still, I changed the setting, since I don't care about it, and rebooted my phone. 2 seconds to prompt me. I tried to open "Timer" and it kept opening "Camera" but that's a different topic. Nice to know it can be reasonably fast (thank you for the tip!), but the Google voice search is faster still and lets me call all contacts, even new ones.

No, *I* don't have something going on, the phone does. It did this from stock, it did this on several phones (I kept trying til I got a good screen), it does this rooted.
If the automatic update of contacts is so tough for it, it was a poorly chosen default, but it hardly constitutes my having something going on.

You are getting way too worked up over this. He didn't say it is a "useless waste of space", he asked if anyone else found it to be a "useless waste of space like I do", which is quite different. Even so, it would clearly be his opinion.
I generally find the Genius Button app to be accurate, not withstanding the above, but the Google voice search does nearly as much and works out of the box. It isn't worth my time to re-edit the keys to bring the app back.
Please note, I said "my time", not "your time" or "everyone's time"
Anyone, I don't suppose there is a way to make the physical "genius" button a general 'Find' like it is on my wife's Droid X?
Google voice search seems too be more intuitive, less intrusive, and launches much faster in my opinion. I've remapped genius button to launch google voice search.

hey excarnate,
1st...thanks for correcting my spelling
2nd...dont assume that I am worked up over something so trivial as if you or anyone else likes, wants to use or doesn't want to use a app. I could really care less and was only trying to let people know there are settings that can be adjusted to make it faster.
3rd...While I think that Google voice search works great I don't think it has all of the capabilities that Genius does but Genius has all of the ones that Voice search does. So to compare the two is a little harder than just saying that Google voice search is better because it is faster. Genius wins hands down when it comes to the amount of things it does in comparison to Google Voice search. Try telling Google voice search to "turn on wifi", "Open Settings", "turn of GPS"
4th...I am not sure what the "find" feature is on the droid phone but since you have taken the time to remap your genius button you can use the app called Button Shortcut (free in market) or Launchkey (free on xda) to open any other app with the long press of Genius/Search button.

Originally I used Button Shortcut to launch the Genius Button app, but after rooting my current phone (with a good screen!) I gave up on Genius Button. If I knew I could have turned off one of the defaults to make it perform acceptably, I would have made it the long press default. Maybe I still will, if I remap the button for any other reason.
Find, is simply find within the current app. If I'm in contacts, the find button lets you find something in contacts. If I'm in a webpage, I believe it lets one search in the webpage (I don't use her phone much so I'm not sure about this).
[mini rant about the contacts app on the MT4G deleted]
So my new take on the Genius Button is: it is worthless out-of-the-box. If your contacts are stable, disable automatic updates and only remap the long press (if desired). If your contacts aren't stable and are important, dump it for the Google search & voice search.
[New information: Even with manual updates of contacts it is very slow to start when on hands free (hands free mode or not). I plan to freeze it in Titanium Pro.]
When browsing the marketplace, installing an app and then going back my scrolled position in the marketplace is lost. This is very frstrating and makes browsing and installing from the marketplace a pain.
Am I missing something?
Cheers, John
Same here. Another issue: I can search and find apps to install (for instance "Root Explorer" that I wanted to use to replace wpa_supplicant) but when I click the link to view the details and install it, I get a dialog that says the detailed view can't be found. If I click OK, it goes back to the search results. If I instead click back, I can read the detailed view, but clicking "Install" results in it telling me the application can't be found. Looks like Google is blocking the app.
+1 same problem here! (Using the tablet outdoors and I must say the feeling is great but....the screen is awful!!!! I can see my every detail reflected in the screen ...lol)
By the way is there no way to comment or rate an app from the market app???
Is there perhaps a way of installing the gingerbread marketplace app?

I've been having the same problem today. Lots of Apps in the market seem to be giving this response but if you try and see the details of and install a featured app then there's no problem. I think the Android Market may be having a few issues today. Try using the Android Market website instead, worked for me.

I'll give that a go, thanks
yeah I noticed the same thing
I would also like to know where to rate and comment on apps
I hate it loses position on back. I like to browse through the app list to what is available for us honeycomb users but the fact that it goes back to the start makes this a pain in the *ss.
i agree, this is horrible, especially when browsing a long list. The marketplace is pretty average all round really.
Would it be too much to ask for a dedicated tablet section?
Just chiming in agreeing that this is a real pita.
Another +1 for the position loss on back being a pain in the ass, especially if you've just scrolled through 400 or so apps only to have to scroll through them again.
+1 here as well. I'd also love to see a section in the market just for the newest apps. I still can't figure out how to comment or rate anything there either. Some of the stuff I have tried and had to just uninstall I would love to be able to comment on. Any suggestions?
I use the online site
Regarding rating apps, here's what I've found:
Menu + Purchase History
Click the name - pick to open with browser
Rate it from the browser.
Yeah, it sucks. Honeycomb fail.
+1 on losing position in the marketplace when going back to it from an app page - very frustrating. I've also had numerous occasions when an app wouldn't properly download or install - the animated bar would continue but no notifications would show up and/or the install would fail leading to the animated bar on the app page continuing to animate but no progress. Going back then finding the app again then going into the app page and clicking install again seems to be the only way to kick start it.
I really don't know how this happened, but a couple of days ago, my Xoom stopped asking me which app I want to use to open a file after say... downloading it.
Whenever I go to the downloads app / file manager app and try to open a file (eg. jpg / doc / xls) it doesn't ask me which app I want to use to open it. The screen just goes dim, and the selection box doesn't appear.
It stays like that indefinitely, till I press the back button.
Even clicking on a youtube/android market link in the browser gives the same results. (It doesn't ask me whether I want to open it using the browser or youtube app)
The only ones that work properly are the ones for which defaults have been set.
Any help will be appreciated.

There's a bug in HC three.two that makes you have to occasionally change the xoom's orientation--with auto-rotate enabled, change the Xoom from landscape to portrait orientation. You should then get a dialog box asking which app you want to use. Once you have done this once for an offending app you usually don't need to do it again.
I really can't thank you enough for that.
I find the auto-rotate pretty annoying, so it's turned off pretty much all the time.... Which is why (I guess) I didn't notice this simple thing.

I'm glad to have helped...pass it on!
The original Navigation (The blue arrow) app was awesome. It had live traffic updates and would re-route automatically and never dropped signal!
Now Google forced this new app on us, Navigation is no more but has now merged into Google Maps (it's a good thing but it's in beta)
Why the hell would I want to use a beta app?
BUGS ENCOUNTERED:
- If you manually press the power button to turn off the screen (whilst using the navigation), the route guidance will reset back to 'Select Destination' when you turn the screen back on!
That's so annoying and dangerous for me especially when you're on the motorway doing 70mph!!!
- Once you enter your destination and select 'Start' on the bottom right, there's a 50% chance the app will force the shutdown of the app.
This has happened often to me 50/50. Worst thing about it is, you can't just re-open the app or disable/enable GPS to fix this bug, you have to reboot your bloody phone!
- Map Orientation view messes up
Even though the original Navigation app had this bug, it was not as common as it is now. Also, there's a bigger delay in automated view change (when you turn direction, etc) This causes problems which forces you to zoom out of the route guide just to see ahead because the app is so stupidly slow to change direction at your pace.
- Stupid places of interest that you don't give a @~!* about!
Why can't I choose what I want to see on my map! I don't care about the best bars and shops in town when I'm on a mission!
Orientation bug is the worst and most annoying for me. Its never the constant behind the back POV... which is ANNOYING!
However, when I press the power button (while in navigation) so I can turn off the screen, and subsequently turn back on the screen, Maps FCs. Always. Once again, ANNOYING.
I felt like Google took 2 steps forward and 3 steps back with this one (while trying to hard to compete with Apple Maps).
Powering off the screen whilst navigating doesn't FC for me, but when I turn the screen back on, I have to click on maps to get navigation back, annoying

But Slappy, do you really think someone who gave this as feedback on how to improve the app has the intelligence to know that?
Also the app will have passed Google's in house testing, they however don't have every single Android device, and every single stock and custom rom in existence therefore there could be device specific problems, have you asked people using other devices if they see the same problems?
After a large scale update most apps have teething problems, but they will fix them very soon.

Yea sorry, stock no special add ons and minimal app, facebook, instagram, ect very simple i have other phones and tablets to play i keep this guy stock for now
i have this problem too occasionally. a reboot fixes.
as someone else already mentioned, i suspect some other program is taking over the mic but i haven't figured out which one yet.
what's weird is that only okay google and the home screen search bar mic is busted when this happens. i can still use the mic to search in chrome and to do anything else (like write a text or whatever).
anyway, keeping an eye on this thread in case anyone figures out what the guilty app is.
May try going to app settings for the Google app (press and hold on it in the app drawer and drag it to app info is the fastest way)
And then go to permissions. Mic should be on. If it's not turn it on. If it is on, try turning it off then back on?

Same Issue
I also have this issue. My phone is non rooted. Only broken through the search widget. I was using nova launcher. Now using google launcher to see if that cures the issue. So far so good. Will now download my common used apps and see if anything breaks it. I really hope it was'nt Nova. I'll cry. I did speak to Google and they will replace the phone under warranty but I am going to test first anyways. I won't be returning my phone to google anytime soon as they want to pre authorize another charge on my credit card to ship me the device well behold I don't have enough available credit for a pre auth. Said they have no other options. So if your phone is under warranty and needs to be replaced make sure you have a good credit limit. I even offered to send them my phone before they sent me the new one but they said I cannot do that. So upset with google right now and their returns.
I had the same issue as OP, as recent as this past weekend. I was stock/normal rooted, no special launcher, no cortana. Microphone worked fine for speakerphone, but i could not use voice search on Google now on my phone, my moto watch, or android auto in my car. Weird how one issue spans three devices.
google searches yielded nothing. i deleted tons of apps and nothing. i went ahead and just flashed the whole stock rom, and it works normal now.
Check the permissions settings.
I am having the same problem as the OP. Glad to know I'm not alone.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Reading the thread, had anyone solved this problem? I took the advice on checking the permission settings and found that all permissions are allowed except for storage and camera (or was it contacts? I don't remember exactly, both of them are lcoated closely). Anyhow, I decided to just allow all permissions, walla it seemed to have solved the problem, I pressed my finger on the microphone at the back of the phone and said "ok google" and it responded. Can anyone else try to see if this works?
This new permission structure has its fair share of problems, I have plenty apps crashing because of only partial permission allowed, Skype being one of them
