Ya it will, we may use country specific or zone servers, either will work. You can browse the link provided above, it tells how many satellites each server has, so for coutries with very few satellites, a higher level server is advisable for faster location.

Hello, can you tell me what is the difference between these entries in gps.conf:
ntp_server=europe.pool.ntp.org
and
ntp_server=0.europe.pool.ntp.org
ntp_server=1.europe.pool.ntp.org
ntp_server=2.europe.pool.ntp.org
ntp_server=3.europe.pool.ntp.org
Which one do i use?

You are mistaken buddy! The above are only NTP servers, and not GPS servers. NTP servers are used to synchronize time, nothing else.
Using correct NTP servers helps the device to have the same time as on the GPS satellites which in turn helps for a faster fix.

The 0, 1 and 2.pool.ntp.org etc names point to a random set of servers that will change every hour.
Use your country's server and it would do.

If I live in Belgium, what is the best thing to to?

you can check with both as which one is getting faster fix, be.pool.ntp.org preferred.

Great post, dude!

Hey,
My experience is after changing the server to my specific location, indoor gps accuracy improved... Or maybe I just feel that way.

It does help with better connection with the time servers configuration.
You can try using the pool zone values.
like for Istanbul you can try these values (turkey):
server 2.tr.pool.ntp.org
server 3.asia.pool.ntp.org
server 2.asia.pool.ntp.org
Happy if it helped you

Hi everyone!
I have an issue with gps.conf file. It simply does not exist on my system. When i tried to copy it from my SD, it gave me an error saying "unable to write".
The application i used is "File Manager" that's free and available on the market.
Any ideas how to get the file there? I have galaxy 5500 as my handheld.
I really wish i could get my GPS working.
Johannes.

You have to use a file explorer with root access to paste a file in your system. That's because the system partition is mounted as read only. You have to mount the system as read/write to paste a file in. Root explorer is the one I use, it is paid though. Also, you can use the adb to push the file into the system using a pc. Hope it helps.

install SuperUser app which is freely available from market. Try running the file manager then. X-plore is much recommended.

I changed NTP_SERVER=ro.pool.ntp.org

is correct?

Nice post thanks +1

I am happy to have helped.
For GPS to work you need your GPS on and internet is not needed...but this would be basic.
If you have internet services on and AGPS enabled, then the fix should be ideally faster and more accurate based on data received from your network provider and not only GPS satellites. Additionally Data services are required to download the map.
That is my understanding of this topic, hope others will add or correct with more if required

download and install HideIP...
I installed it. It wasn't easy to install it on my jam.
Cause it needs at least 6mb free RAM to run it. Because my jam is allready full with applications, I needed to uninstall a lots off progs first.
Ok finally I managed to get it running.
My first impression, it's not as userfriendly as TomTom. For example if you want to drive to a city, you have to choose change city first, cause it takes standard the last city you have choosen. You can't just type in the city and go.
But the first look isn't bad. It got some potential, but it needs a lots of work to make as good as TomTom. Also too bad on the site you can't find lots of info. I haven't found on the site the min 6mb issue. And on the site they say Dutch language supported, but I can't find it
I haven't test it a lot yet... I give it a try a few days before I make any conclusion or before I re-install TomTom.

[APP][UPDATED Oct 9 2008] XChange R8 currency convertor

Hi guys,
I must admit that I didn’t write software for a few years, and this is my first attempt after a long break – so please be gentle…
Xchange R8 is a simple currency convertor. You can choose 3 currencies to be displayed and for the time being you have two WebServices available: Bank of Romania (for my Romanian friends) and Bank of England (for my other friends). Bank of England currency are accessed via the Export Technologies WebService.
You need of course an Internet connection.
For Bank of Romania you can choose to see the currencies as they were at a certain date. Before you ask, chosing a date in the future will alas not work. The Export Technologies service does not have this function though, and when working with the Bank of England this choice will be unavailable.
The program remembers the last downloaded values for each service.
Please note that the Export Technologies service (for Bank of England) is slow – an update can take up to a minute. There’s nothing I can do about that.
I wrote this program initially for myself, as I often needed to know the currency rates and this is much faster than navigating from the browser. Then I saw somebody on this forum asking about such a program. While I’m sure better solutions can be found, I had a lot of fun writing this. Besides, it’s free!
I’m totally willing to add other WebServices to the list if you can provide me with their address.
Please note that I can only work on this during weekends: I have a company to run and it takes almost all my time.
Another note: .NET 3.5 framework is required.
UPDATE: v 1.1:
Added Bank of Hungary web service
Corrected a bug in the calendar: when first opened it always went to a day in July. Now it defaults to today.
Notes: Bank of Hungary does not update the service daily. Therefore, after you press Download, you may see a different date than today appearing at the top: this is the date of the last update. Furthermore, because of this, when you use the calendar to choose a date, you may get the message "No data available for the chosen date!". Simply choose another date. Hint: they don't update during weekends.
UPDATE 21/08/08 v 1.2
Added Invert function for those who prefer to see the exchange course mirrored. For example, if before you saw 1 GBP = 2 USD, after Invert you'll see 1 USD = 0.5 GBP.
Added calculator. For pic see next post.
UPDATE Oct 9 2008 v 2.0
You can now convert from EUR to USD and actually whatever you want from a list of 150 currencies. Choose Webservicex from Options -> Currencies.
Please note that this service is updating all the time, so values taken at a few minutes apart can vary slightly. This may actually be a good thing if you want to feel the pulse of the market in these stressed times.
One problem with Webservicex (affecting only Romanians as far as I can tell): it only contains the old currency (ROL) and it always returns zero. I don't see this as real trouble, as you can always use the Bank of Romania service.
Pic for the calculator:

I definitely would. However, I need what is called a WebService, like http://www.exporttechnologies.com/webservices/currencyservice/currencyservice.asmx?WSDL.
That is usually an XML file defining the access to the service. A site simply giving a list of currencies is not a web service.
I looked at the Czech National Bank site (the english version) and could not find any link to a service. Perhaps you can help me there?

Sorry, unless I'm very wrong this is just a method to set the date (and info) on their site. I can't use this to retrieve the data in the application.
A webservice link always ends with WSDL.
This can tell you if I can use it or not. By the way, WSDL = Web Services Description Language, in case you wondered

LTE SUPL servers

Dear All,
I'm trying to answer a question for a colleague and wondered if anyone can help….
I need to understand what LTE SUPL server the majority of manufacturers devices in the EU are likely to use, or indeed are already are using, in Germany etc for their LTE devices
As I understand it (which could be wrong), Google SUPL servers, which may be the first choice for many, only currently support SUPL1.0 which isn’t LTE compatible and I dont know of any plans for migration to 2.0 - so whose servers will everyone use if the Operators aren’t providing them?
Maybe the answer is ‘their own’, but will that work for smaller OEM’s?
Any help much appreciated
Um, if you want to learn how the SUPL I recommend Google to find the article entitled "Location Based Services Part II: LBS Network Architectures," by Neil Shah.
If you ask what the protocol will be used if the LTE standard is not compatible with the SUPL V1.0 it seems to me that this is the protocol LPP (3GPP has defined it for LTE Networks in the Control Plane Protocol).

Thank you for the reply, I found the article - much appreciated
I dont think it's really answering my question though... I want to know if LTE devices will move away from SUPL and only use a C-Plane based solution (3GPP defined) or if a U-Plane based solution (OMA defined), SUPL2.0 (LTE compatible) is still required?
So are the devices to be positioned via a SUPL Location Platform or a E-SMLC (enhanced-serving mobile location centre)?
If SUPL Location Platforms are still to be used then who will host them?
thanks

At least one major US operator plans SUPL 2.0 support for LTE and there are vendors like Ericsson who provide this capability. Wider deployment, particularly outside of the US is uncertain. Google may support it one day but there has been no confirmation. In the meantime, many OEMs are using alternative services that are equivalent depending on your use-case. These include products like Rx Networks' XYBRID RT (multiconstellation AGPS/AGNSS plus Wi-Fi and Cell-ID postioning) and GPStream PGPS (extended ephemeris for AGPS). You can try XYBRID RT under their free developers' program.
