Does anyone here live or knows someone in southern Indiana who is or was on T-mobile that i can get feed back from? Nobody i know is on this network so i dont know how good they are around here. Im thinking of switching to them purely for a phone they have, but i have some concerns about the network itself.. I cant trust the coverage network map they have cause... well networks are known to exaggerate their actual coverage.
Any thoughts or input would be great..

Does anyone know of T-Mobile plans to expand cell coverage in the near future?
I love this phone, but I get almost no service at home, and only edge in town. I am approaching the end of my 14 day trial and need to make a decision soon. If they are planning on expanding in the near future, I will probably stick it out.
ummmm you can call T-Mobile and ask them or check the coverage map on their site.

ummmm. I did the obvious things, and got the obvious answers. I just thought maybe someone here could give some insight to the situation. T-Mobile engineers are working on a service request now, have been for several days.
The coverage map, as you probably know, only shows existing coverage.

They are expanding 3g coverage in existing markets, but I have not heard anything about voice.
Well I finally spoke to T-Mobile again. My area has been flagged for needing service improvements. It should be completed in 120 days.
I don't want to return my phone, but I need service at home.
Is anyone working on a true voip solution?
I would probably just go with a Blackberry Curve for right now, since you dont have coverage at home. Get the Unlimited Hotspot calling, and you will be able to have coverage at home, too (assuming you have wifi at home).
Apparently I was down in Brooklyn the other day to visit someone, attempting to make a call I found out my normal "EDGE" icon turns to "3G", so I ran a mobile speed test and turns out I was getting 800~Kb/s. So is it possible that AT&T can actually have different frequency in some areas? I didn't have a video camera to film this atm. But if anyone want to verify it who lives near the area.. 8th Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11220
Anyway just some interesting find =) for those who can't survive without 3G speed on AT&T network for the G1, maybe you can live there
Yep Data Roaming was def on, I paid for that service! and it's not a bug, after I left that area speed returned to EDGE and I started to get like...200Kb/s to 100Kb/s again =\
Are you sure roaming was off?
hmmm.... very interesting

This has been documented before in San Francisco too. I'm guessing it's due to some roaming setup that incidentally resulted in 3G nodes also being activated for att users. It's probably not something att or tmo would advertise, as att doesn't officially have 1700AWS handsets and tmo really has no reason to push its users to att. That's just my uneducated guess.
Okay so i'm in an area where T-mobile only has edge coverage and I'm hating my life right now without 3G, but AT&T has 3G coverage here, so why won't it let me roam on to the faster network? I can pull it up under network services but it just won't let me actually roam on to the network. Is this an issue of the phone simply not having the VPN's and such? Cuz if T-mobile won't charge me for roaming I damn well wanna use it! I'm using Cyanogen's Mod and the Hero 1.3.5 theme. All I want for my birthday is 3G!!!
They use different frequency's for the 3G signal.. thats why unlocked G1's can't use att 3g even if they have a AT&T sim
Hmm... seems strange the G1 would still be able to see the network being that it's using a different signal. Is there any way around this? Cuz they just stationed me in Quantico, VA for the rest of the summer and I'm ready to shoot myself on this Edge crap! And sadly 2 months is just too short of a time to actually get internet installed lol
hum.. I doubt it will help any but thier are som VPN settings floating around the board here that haykuro made. most ROMS come with it, I doubt it'll help though.
if that doesn't help take 2 Motrin and drink plenty of water. /end navy joke
Haha, yeah I'm a corpsman, we're working down here at the Marine Corps officer candidate school, so my mantra has been "Take Motrin, hydrate, and change your socks." These past couple weeks. Yet they somehow still mess those things up lol.

Im sorry to say but you cant use 3G on AT&T. Tmobile didnt want to wait for any bands in the 1700mhz or 1900mhz band to become available, so there 3G runs in the 2100/1700mhz band and that is the only band the G1 can use to get 3G. You can see AT&T service but that is voice, not 3G. AT&T 3G runs over the 1700/1900mhz band. here is a artical about this.

mods needs to move this.

Wasn't complaining just wondering if there was a tech reason it wasn't working with these builds and if there was a way around it

please post in the correct thread please
thank you
You must be barely outside of their coverage area. The map shows 3g coverage on both sides of where you are. The schedule that is floating around says they are supposed to expand coverage to Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Richmond, and Virginia Beach this summer so you might get lucky and get it before you leave.
Quantico's huge, T-Mobile has no 3G service there, and WiFi is out as NMCI doesn't permit wireless APs.
You're stuck with EDGE on T-Mobile, or EDGE on AT&T if you roam, but you won't get a speed increase if you use it, just a roaming charge. The problem is the frequency, as others have mentioned. AT&T uses 850/1900 where as T-Mobile uses 1700/2100. There's no known way (yet *crosses fingers) to use a T-Mobile G1 with AT&T's 3G service, so sadly, you're going to be stuck for 2 months out there with what you have.
I have my Dream working on AT&T's 3G service, and it works quite well, but it's not a G1. I specifically bought a Rogers Canadian HTC Dream (which is band-compatible with AT&T) for this purpose. So if you're *that* desperate for 3G service, you could spring for a Rogers Dream or Magic phone, but they aren't cheap. Additionally, they don't run custom ROMs yet (we just got root on the Rogers Dream this morning, and the Rogers Magic was only last week). So... There is no perfect solution for you yet if you want 3G and root. I've been living on my ADP1 with EDGE for 5 months now, and it isn't *that* bad, I guess.
On the more "bleeding edge" frontier, there's speculation that if one were to flash the Rogers dream radio to the T-Mobile G1, that it would do 3G on AT&T instead of T-Mo, but nobody's been able to get it done yet. A few people say it's the same chipset, it'll work, a few others say it won't, but till somebody tries it, we'll never know for sure. Either way, it's not currently possible as we don't have a Rogers Dream radio image.
So, there's your options I'm afraid. And something else to consider - even though AT&T says they have 3G, check with somebody else who has their service to see if they're actually getting it first. Quantico is a huge base, and there's no cell towers on it to my knowledge. So it's possible that nobody is getting 3G signal there, on either network.
I'm planning on ditching verizon and going prepaid with the nexus 4. My question is regarding att and tmobile coverage in this area. Anyone have experience on either of those networks here? Thanks.

I'm not familiar with your area but T-Mobile's coverage map is more detailed than those provided by other carriers. You should at least be able to tell whether you'll get HSPA+ or EDGE speeds in your location.

Thanks, that's good to know. Verizon's isn't nearly as accurate as it says.

I live in SLO county and switched from Verizon to AT&T about a year ago. I live in Cayucos and the Verizon coverage was not good. A couple of years ago, AT&T bought the local Cell One provider. Cell One used to have the best local coverage...and now AT&T has their towers. I find the AT&T coverage to be very good around the county. I will say that when I travel to bigger cities (Orange County, Vegas, etc) the AT&T data network seems slower. But, on a day to day basis around here, I've been very happy with the switch. Most people are like "What? You left Verizon for AT&T?!" But as many people will tell you - coverage varies a lot carrier to carrier, location to location. For me, AT&T is working very well in SLO County. As for T-Mobile, the only experience I have with it is that a friend of mine who visits periodically has T-Mobile. Her coverage is not as good as the AT&T coverage, at least in my house in Cayucos.
So I have no coverage at home. I am 0.1 miles from coverage. The coverage map shows my whole area as full 2G coverage. However from appx my location to the end of the road (not to mention many more areas) I have zero reception. Again, these are all areas that show good coverage.
I have talked at length with AT&T and StraightTalk and made no progress towards a positive resolution. I have even installed an app that is supposed to boost signal in hopes to squeeze out just enough juice to bust through the small dead area between myself and signal range with no success.
I have also purchased a MicroCell after AT&T said my ST phone should be able to ride off the MicroCell. The catch is I have to activate it on an AT&T post paid account. I have no friends who have AT&T as Verizon has pretty much cornered the market in my area.
I do, however, remember a friend whom I've since lost contact with being able to access the Internet at my house. I am almost certain they had an AT&T phone.
Does anyone have any experience with similar StraightTalk issues and have suggestions? I am not the expert so I will not bother with speculation. I am using CM 10.1 however I had the same issue on stock OS. I am using a StraightTalk SIM in case anyone might want to travel down that road. I have tinkered with the APN settings however I do not think that path will work because I went to detect networks and I see nothing, not even foreign networks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
If you don't have a signal you don't have a signal, no app or software tweak is going to get you access.
If it was no internet or MMS the APN might be the issue, signal is very basic it either works or it doesn't and it's not the straight talk Sim if you get access down the street.
Getting your microcell activated is your best bet, maybe an at&t store could help?

Are there hills around you? Lots of trees? How far away are the towers? Those coverage maps are always estimates. YMMV.

I'm in the mountains. I know that begs the response "well duh!" I was just hoping something I could try...
As far as the MicroCell goes: been there, done that. I would need someone who has AT&T to log into their account, add my MicroCell serial number and add my cell phone to the access list. If someone wants to work with me on that by all means let me know. I will thank you warmly and up your thanks meter if you post something to the ring of "I'm on it" as a reply.
Thanks guys 'n' gals.
Truthfully, activating your microcell on someone else's account would only cause problems in the long run. As a tech support rep of ATT myself, if you don't have the coverage your best bet is to just go with Verizon if you do have coverage with them. Would save you a headache, hours of phonecalls potentially troubleshooting the failure that is a microcell, and probably lots of wasted money you could've put forth towards something that does work.
