Good article includes the iconia - Acer Iconia A500

This article was wriiten about the new Asus win 7 tablet, but half way through they start comparing it with it's Android cousins. I found it interesting they they didn't include the Asus TF, and how well it stacked up against the ipad2, xoom, and the others.
Again you have to get about half way through the article to see how the A500 stacks up, but it does fairly well!

Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets: a guided video tour of the UI

Engadget has just posted some of the videos on T Mobile G slate showing the awsome Honeycomb ui
Read further here-http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/06/googles-android-3-0-honeycomb-for-tablets-a-guided-tour-of-the/
How is this related to the N1?
I find it frustrating that every time I come in here looking for info, I have to sift through 100 threads that have absolutely nothing to do with the N1. Just because you own an N1 doesn't mean that you should post every thread that has anything even remotely android related.
It is nexus one related dude, I read some speculation that Honeycomb was centered around tablets, but smartphones could receive a smaller version (similar to iPad - iPhone OS) for phones.
Although I also heard somewhere recently that honeycomb will only run on dual-core processors. We will have to see if that's true, and if so; if cooking is possible.

Productivity - Word processor etc.

Hello Xoom owners,
I have been closely following the progress of the Xoom and am excited with what I'm seeing. I plan on purchasing the Wifi version when it releases in April. The reason I am interested in the Xoom is the productivity aspect of it, i.e. typing and web browsing. I'm not too worried about video playback or apps right now. My question to you is, how proficient is the Xoom in these categories? I need this tablet to be as much of a standalone device as it can be (unlike another tablet that needs to be plugged into itunes). I am happy to see usb mounting because this will help file transferring even more. I used pages on the ipad and was moderately impressed. Any opinions? How does the Xoom match up to the ipad in writing and the web?
Thanks in advance!

The Xoom has zzero productivity apps, no word processor no excel. Honeycomb will Bea great os once they get rid of the lag, until that point apple really does win because it just works. Now i have a Xoom and the I pad 2, I love them both and trying to pick which one to return is ggoing to br vvery hard.

Documents to Go is available on android and iOS platform. What makes you claim that Xoom has zero productivity apps?
I have Documents to Go and although it's not optimized for Honeycomb, I haven't had any problems with it. I'm looking forward to a tablet version but for now I don't have any complaints.

What about Google Docs? Is the standard html5 interface accessible?
I also use documents to go on the XOOM. No problems at all making word and excel docs. It also does power point, but i don't.

If it is just for the "I need a word processor NOW" effect then go with the iPad. From what I've heard the Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps are pretty sweet. If you want a great overall experience of a real OS, however, you should stick with the Xoom. I love how I can play around with it. And since I have no urgent need to write a lot or crunch numbers on the Xoom (that's what I have my laptop for for now) I will wait until something really effective comes out. For now I'm stuck with the Documents To Go which is very basic but at least I can open and view documents decently. Yes, it's the paid version.

HAHA! I would say what you get from D2G in regards to PowerPoint is more comparable to a very pathetic "PDF" version of a .ppt(x) file. No animations, picture effects are messed up, etc. BUT, if you have plain and simple presentations you can view them OK.

It doesnt match up at all. You just have to be patient, or go with the ipad. I chose the latter, but I'm impatient.

No netflix thru the browser because Netflix uses silverlight which has no android port.
I have no problem waiting for the word processing to get better on the xoom. I'm not planning on writing papers on this thing, maybe just rough drafts but it needs to have something. Probably going with the xoom, just having second thoughts after seeing the ipad 2.

docs.google.com works for me. i'm not doing anything with word docs and excel docs that cause any problems. i rely on docs.google.com for my cr-48 too. or at least i did. since the xoom arrived the cr-48 isn't getting much lovin'.
Okay i e-mail quickoffice to see if they're offering a honeycomb version of their suite
they made a tablet version specifically for notion ink adam as shown here:
so here what they said
"Hi Kam,
Quickoffice is indeed available on the Motorola XOOM. The app ships preinstalled on the device, and is currently available in view-only mode. Quickoffice for Honeycomb will be available soon, offering editing functionality as well. Please stay tuned!

HC 3.2 coming :D brace yourselves.

Hi there, just been reading about this after I found it on a gadget website this morning . hopefully it'll ship to tablets soon..... or if the devs in here, mdj and dexter are feeling generous they may buy one of the new tablets and port it over perhaps??
http://2dayblog.com/2011/06/23/android-3-2-coming-this-summer/
quick quote if you aren't allowed external site access and youre reading from your xda app.
"Yesterday we saw the launch of the world’s first Android 3.2 tablet, Huawei’s MediaPad. However, it seems it won’t be long until we see more tablets running 3.2, as the build is set for release this summer.
Android 3.2 doesn’t offer much in the way of features. This is my next reports that it does contain some bug fixes and improved hardware acceleration, but the biggest thing is that it will bring support for Qualcomm processors as well as Nvidia’s popular Tegra 2 chipset.
The Motorola Xoom will reportedly get Android 3.2 in the next few weeks, but Qualcomm support could mean that current 7-inchers (like the HTC Flyer) may also get the update. Fingers crossed!"
So seeing as the Xoom is getting it in the next few weeks, lets give support to our devs and maybe the A500 may get it also.
HC 3.2 is just 3.1 optimised for 7" tablets. Of no real relevance to Acer Iconia A500 users. It really should have been called 3.11 but then that might have recalled some scary memories for seasoned Windows users.

Yeah, trying to get a Windows 3.11 PC connected to a novell netware network using thinnet cable, made even Linux administration seem easy.

I got nostalgic for my first Windows PC, so I'm running my old "friend" Windows 3.11 on my Iconia using DOSbox.
In relevance to the thread though:
"Tech site This Is My Next, however, reports that Android 3.2 Honeycomb will be the last in the Android 3.x series and that it has several new features:
- optimized for 7-inch devices,
- expands support for more mobile processors such as NVIDIA Tegra 2 and Qualcomm’s processors,
- fixes some bugs and improves hardware acceleration, and
- provides updates to widgets and apps (e.g., Movies, Movie Studio, Music, etc.)."

[Q] Acer Iconia Tab W4-820 Android/dual-boot?

Hey guys,
I'm considering the Acer Iconia Tab W4-820 tablet (8" / x86 Atom Z3740 / W8 / 2GB RAM) since it's really cheap now. It could replace my netbook which would be sweet, but I also need an Android tablet for some work.
Is there a way to dual-boot this thing with both W8 and droid?
Even better, is there a way to dual-boot this thing with some reasonable Linux distro and droid, without W8? Honestly I weren't even looking into touch-capable Linux distros yet.
I've been looking but information seems very scarce or none for this particular tablet. I found someone dual-booting other Acer tablets, and found some Acer support article about being able to boot their tablets into another OS by using a USB-LAN adapter and booting from LAN, but not sure if either of those would work with W4. Also I don't have a USB-LAN adapter so something simpler would be nice.
Thanks in advance for any info.
Yes and no. It depends on what you want. If it's Windows 8.1 and Android, possible.
Do it with your own risk, I'm not responsible for any damage.
Lets get started...
First Acer W4 820 is Bay Trail based, i.e. Atom z3740 is Bay Trail (confirm by searching in Google and navigate to Intel website details on the processor). The tab has 2GB RAM, which is more than enough. An internal space of 8GB is required (to install Android). Backup the existing OS and valuable data as Android installation is slightly unstable (do not worry, very rarely goes wrong but no idea about camera). A laptop or desktop is optional but a good practise.
Now goto the following website and read the guidelines
01.org/android-ia/guides/quick-start
and read the guidelines, it's not listed for this tab, so read general guidelines.
Next goto the following website
01.org/android-ia/downloads
and download the required version of Android for "Bay Trail". Follow the steps in the quick guidelines website to install, and you're completed installation.
 An advise, Android is for light usage, not at all like Windows tab.
Thanks. I know the process but in the meantime I gave up on it and bought a cheapo droid tablet instead. I need droid for some work (related to mobile Chrome) and thought the win tablet could be a replacement for my old Eee 901.
But I couldn't find any report about anyone having success with installing an alternative OS on the W4 - quite the opposite in fact, someone reported that the method did not work on W4. And since I definitely didn't want to pay any money just to have a W8 machine, I didn't buy it. Every time I want to buy a mobile computer I decide upgrade of the desktop is a better investment. In this case SSD > tablet.
So my nearest project will be to install some proper Linux on that new droid tablet
:good:
