Hi all,
I am with Rogers and just upgraded to R2BA020. I notice previously from tapping a contact number contacts, it can dial out directly. But now it is extremely annoying that I tap the contact number, it puts the number into the dialer (screen with dialing pad), then I hit the call to dialout.
Does anybody find the dial from contacts behaviour changed?
Is there a dialer that can completely replace the stock one?
Thanks
i haven't received any updates for my phone yet, but that sounds more hassle to make a call now. maybe this change is for people who complained about accidentally tapping on the number and it calls out when they did not intend to do so. mind as well just tap and hold on the contact's name and select make a call to mobile/home/office
Meh, that doesn't seem too bad, but it is annoying nonetheless. I think if you dial, and put the phone by your ear, it should use the proximity sensor to realize it should start calling.
Android Variations: Check em out!
Yes, i too noticed this ! Funny instead of making the call process easier its now actually longer !
The workaround is to go to ur phonebook & long press the contact to call.
yup, long press can skip the dialpad but it brings up another box to click through before calling....
I have never came across a phonebook with any phone that is 2 clicks before it dials. It is just pure annoying. They got it right the first time, I don't know why SE messed it up now.
yeah, i have a rooted x10a to the 23 firmware, and its taking me to the dailer after i hit my contact's number. this is rather annoying, we gotta find a fix for it!!
Yes I noticed that too. I find it annoying. Is there a work around to this?
I use another dialler called aTAKEphONE, it will dial directly.
There is a trial available at shsh.com
Hi guys, I've just moved over from iphone so still finding my feet with android.
For the most part android is far superior but the contact side of things is still bugging me. This is what I want to be able to do:
1. Have my call log as calls only, not texts. I know you can change this to view calls received, dialled etc, but it soons defaults back and shows everything. I just want my log to have dialled and received and nothing else? I'm sure i've read somewhere on the net that this was possible on the SGS through a hack??
2. I want to set up a favourites list of say best mate, gf, work etc and just be able to press their name and it dials there number, not opens another window that shows history, text option, dial option video call option, i.e. just direct dial. I also would like this to be the first screen that opens when I press my phone icon on the dock??
I've set my gf up on my desktop as a direct dial shortcut, but I don't want to be doing that for everyone. I've got a load of contacts but maybe only dial 10 at most on a regular basis.
are there any hacks or thrid party dialers that do this??
Cheers

I can help you with #2. Just swipe right on your favorite and you call that favorite immediately. Swipe left to immediately send a message.

hmmm, can't say i can see a way around No.1, other than using a new dialer/contacts app such as Go Contacts or Dialer One etc..
must say, i actually quite like the comprehensive log, coming from Sense and Stock roms with calls only, i like having it all in one place...
Dialer One would be my choice, but only as i used it on CM7 on my Hero for its smart dial feature... can't comment on Go Contacts
hope this helps
Dickie
I use loads off texts a day so within 10 mins of dialling someone their details are long gone
I'll check out Go Contacts and Dialer One though, thanks for the recommendations
This is a Samsung thing, regular android does not put texts with the call log. I don't think I'd like them to be combined like that.
it is the right thing to do

I like them combined. There again, there could be an option to control it.
Go Contacts is just the ticket
Thanks guys, much better now
Ok so I orginally thought the idea of GV integration with sprint was awesome...after fiddling with it. I was very disappointed.
The problems I had with it were...I dont want to use my GV number as my primary. I dont want to change my GV number to my cell number. Each option had issues that I felt needed to be addressed. Changing my GV number to my cell made it to where txt would be comming into my phone via gv app. Yes there is a work around but ita annoying and I dont want my text stored on line. I also didnt want to change my gv number, this to me sounds like it could be a bad idea at some point in time, and cause other issues. So I set out how to get classic google voice back with the new app that will not let you just use it for vm heres how i did it, now I know this affects the Nexus S 4G with the version of GV they include...however the market version does seem to be different.
Option 1 (For Rooted Phones)
1) Use Titanium backup or some other root explorer to delete the stock voice apk, then reboot recovery and wipe dalvik
2) Once back inside the rom download voice from the market as that version doesnt seem to suffer from the ****ty options that are stock on the phone
Option 2 (The proper way for rooted and non rooted phones)
1) Launch GV app on phone, and sign in, when it ask choose to change your gv number to your cell number.
2) Get annoyed and go get a shot of vodka, and wait about 15 minutes (honestly because you wont be able to change it back for at least 15 minutes.)
3) Login to gv on the web (voice.google.com)
4) once in there click the gear, and pick voice settings. Under the phone area choose to disable the sprint port number (your google voice number). It will disable and revert back to your old gv number
5) Where you mobile number is at you should see enable google voice mail for this line. Click that, and follow the instructions.
6) Click on voice mail and text uncheck email message and send sms.
7) on your phone open gv, goto more then settings make sure it says. Making calls do not use gv to make calls. make sure this phones number is your actual mobile number adjust sync options as you wish and make sure My gv number is indeed your gv number.
8) DO NOT SIGN OUT OF THE APP (Im not sure what will happen but my guess is it will break)
9) Edit your voice mail settings under call settings and change your vm settings to GV from "My Carrier" and make sure your GV number is in there.
Options: Now if you dont want to use the gv app at all you can have gv send you an sms or an email instead or manually check your voice mail by phone.
Enjoy
I kinda did this a different way but not as elegant. I used root manager to remove google voice. I might have used root manager to remove the data too but I can't recall. I rebooted. Then I tried downloading google voice again. I think it installed. I tried running it and there was a problem. I uninstalled it. Then installed it again. That must have flushed out all the references to the program that I missed. Ran the program, signed in, chose let me choose to use google voice for every call. Then I clicked the link for conditional call forwarding and hit send. It's *28(google voice number with area code) then send. After that I hit back until I got back to the gv setup. I chose skip then next then I think I was done. It's working now the old way. Separate numbers and google voice for voicemail.

Can you explain what this workaround is? I'm not too thrilled with how the GV app handles SMS either.
The most annoying thing about this is the app options seems useless for configuration purposes. You really have to configure this through the web to work right.
After I first set it up and tested a voice mail I got
An email, an MMS, and a notification bar alert from GVM app itself even though in the app I had the first two disabled.. Finally got it down to just a notification bar alert from the GVM app only after configuring through the web. It's stupid that by default it lets you know THREE different ways you have a damn voice mail.
I love it!
My texts come to my phone just as they are supposed to and since I turned off notifications in GV app I don't get notifications in the app. I get emails and texts telling me of voice messages just like before. Yes the app still receives text messages and stores them online, but I see this as a plus since txt is mainly how I communicate and my job has me working in a lot of places with internet access but no cell coverage. win win in my book.
To get texts sent to your phone you have to check the little box in your settings that says "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)"
It took me a while to messing around to get everything set up, but I'm liking it now.
I use option 2 (GV number in place of cell number). It works flawlessly. I have had no issues. For me this was easy because I made people use my GV # as my primary number years ago. It just takes a little time an patience getting all your friends and family to use the GV #, but once its done its the best move you'll ever make.

It doesn't have to handle sms. Check that little checkbox and the sms will be delivered to your phone like they were before. Then go into GV app and turn off notifications.
Nice guide. Well since my Nexus is stock and I couldn't stand how broken gv and sprint are together I wanted it to go back to go it was.
That is to say, texts and voicemails come through notifications by the Google voice app and texts sent to my mobile number come through the default messaging app. That's how its supposed to be.
It's quite easy to do, in settings for Google voice in your phone turn off all notifications and inbox synchronization. Basically nothing should be checked. Then in the web go to your Google voice settings and under phones next to your mobile number click on "disable Google voice on your sprint phone".
That should make everything normal again. Hope that helps. I don't see the point of what sprint and Google were trying to do here. The Google voice app works just fine the way it is. Don't mess with a good thing.

I think the folks asking, like myself, are looking for slightly more detail.
After rooting around for the setting mentioned I found it.
1. Log in to Google Voice online
2. Click on the little gear in the upper right hand corner to access Options
3. Click on Voice Settings
4. On the Phones tab under "Forward calls to" click on the Edit button for your Google Voice enabled mobile phone
5. Where it says "Text Settings" check the box for "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)"
This should send texts to your phones SMS app rather than through the Google Voice app.
Hope this saves others some time searching.
My biggest pet peeves were:
1. Incoming messages from the same sender would sometimes create multiple threads inside of Google Voice.
2. SMS messages received from contacts that were not stored in Google account (i.e. corporate account) would commonly show up from a telephone number versus a name.
3. SMS messages initiated from Google Voice would not show up as threads until they were responded to.
4. Messaging application was rendered useless bloatware.
5. I don't want/need Google Voice to archive 300 - 500 text messages a day.
The entire thing is a cluster____.... I've never quite seen something so utterly stupidly organized and launched like this..
How long does it take it so when someone calls my number they hear my Sprint voicemail message instead? I just called my number and it's still going to the Google voice system. It's not activated just checked as my mobile phone but NOT intergrated anymore.

Brotha -I was about to go insane out of my mind -and then I read this. Thanks. I thought I looked at every possible setting -but there is always a button that eludes you.
Then I had to stop the double notifications bc I was getting my text message on my phone and my text in google voice. So on my phone in GV settings I Un-checked "Inbox notifications"
I was really excited about GV integration - now I wish that Sprint would have left it alone. It really is a big mess to get it to do what you want.

Thanks for the info, this is exactly what I was looking for.
I hope Sprint and Google work something out with this.. If XDA members are scratching their heads how to make this work like they want imagine how a regular novice user must feel.
The Sprint/Google intergration and its current method of "configuring" (ie dice rolling) reminds of some half assed business solution some unknown outside firm was paid to write.
I didn't have to root or uninstall. Just download google voice from the market and let it overwrite the existing installation.

Yeah I just plain old updated and the settings went back to the old ones.
Hi everyone.
I have a major problem trying to use Google Voice on my LG Nexus 4 phone.
I have my Google Voice number for over 2 years and it has worked fine on other phones, also it currently works on my laptop using the web browser - I receive and make (dial out) phone calls from the browser.
But on my phone - I can't dial out!
Any of you had the same problem and knows what the solution is?
I am searching online for a solution but can't find an answer.
It doesn't even seem that anyone else have the exact same problem that I have...
Here are some details:
I am on T-Mobile. Regular plan - post paid (not pre-paid), on a contract. I have even activated international dialing, as I call some people overseas once or twice a month. I have unlimited minutes (in the US), texts and internet (although after 2GB it gets slower).
My GV account seems to work OK - with Hangouts - in the browser on my laptop (Acer PC).
I can make phone calls and receive them - in both cases Hangouts handles the calls. I see now that if I receive a phone call it directs to Google Hangouts - but it works there just fine. It seems that Google have integrated Voice and Hangouts.
May be that's causing a problem in my phone...keep reading, please.
By the way - when I am in Google Voice's menu - and try to dial a number from there - I have 2 options:
1. dial a number using "Googe Talk" - nothing happens - it can't dial out that way. (You have to go to Hangouts and dial from there)
2. dial a number using xxx-xxx-xxxx (your phone number shows here - that's my T-Mobile number attached to this GV account) - when I choose that option and dial a number - this happens - GV dials my phone first, my phone starts ringing and I have to answer it - I answer it, then it connects to the number which I dialed on the laptop. That works.
When I go to the settings of GV in the browser - first menu that says "Phone settings" - there currently I have checked both options for "Forward calls to": 1. Google Chat & 2. Mobile number (My T-Mobile number). If I uncheck "Google Chat" as a forwarding option - when someone dials my GV number it will only dial my phone, and it won't dial my GV account on my laptop (Hangouts). I have tried either leaving both checked, or just dial my T-Mobile number - but both ways Google Voice does not work properly on my phone.
Now - lastly - on my phone (Nexus 4) - I receive phone calls when someone dials my GV number.
But I can't dial out (make phone calls)!
I have tried everything from reinstalling Google Voice (the app), clearing cash and data, restarting the phone, Sign Out and Sign In again.
I have tried changing the calling option: "Always dial with Google Voice", "Ask Every Time You make a phone call", etc. neither works - it never dials... What happens is - it changes the screen for a second and tries to dial, but then goes black, then goes back to the GV app. It can't dial!
Any idia why this is happening?
Some other thoughts:
I also have Google Hangouts on my phone - can this cause a problem? Do I need to do a certain setting in the Hangouts app?
I have had this GVaccount attached to a different number once also. Then I unattached it from itand attached it to my current T-Mobile number. I went through confirming it - I received a phone call and input a PIN which was provided (in the browser), afterwards I got the message - "You have successfully added your number".... Can that have caused a problem?
Please, help me!
I need to be able to use GV on my Nexus 4. Mostly I need it for when posting adds on CraigsList - I want to give away my google number and be able to receive a call and make calls with that google number. Also I need it for giving away to strangers and such... But I need to be able to dial out, return missed calls, etc.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Try using the native dialer on the phone while the option "Use Google Voice to make all calls" is checked in the Voice app. Make sure you've started the Voice app and it's running in the background. Also, in the Voice settings you see on a computer, try only forwarding calls to your phone, and nowhere else, and see if that makes any difference.

I tried all that you said before, and I tried it just now again - a couple of times I reset the phone too, uninstalled the GV app, and reinstalled.
Still doesn't Dial Out!
Other things to point Out - I am also using Go Launcher. I tried going to the regular launcher and dial from there. Still doesn't dial out....
Also - I have chosen in the settings to Sync Everything!, and background data is enabled.
The only one thing I haven't done is to switch the Voice Mail Service. I skipped that setting when prompted.
I want to be able to use my own Voice Mail provided by T-Mobile when someone calls my T-Mo number,
and if someone calles me on my GV number and I miss the call - then that should go to the GV Voice Mail, which I can check by dialing the GV number from my cell or by going to the Google Voice web page in the browser. I want the 2 Voice Mails to be separate!
Can this Voice Mail setting be a reason to cause problems for me when I Dial Out?
Any suggestions, please, HELP!

Hm. Are you rooted? Have a custom ROM? If so, which ROM?
I ask because I know I was having troubles similar to yours when I used MIUI. I could receive calls via Google Voice, but it would use my actual number, instead of my Google Voice number, to dial out. It would work, but Voice could not intercept the call before my real number dialed out. I never messed with it too much, as I flashed back to PA after a few days. All that shows is maybe some ROMs have troubles letting the Voice app integrate with the native dialer. If you have the time, try flashing a new ROM and testing it. It won't be a fix, but it might help prove that theory.

I have NOT rooted my phone (and never had). It is a regular Unlocked Nexus 4 which I bought from the Google Play Store.
It is very frustrating that I can't make the Google Voice to work on it.
I also have the Advanced Task Killer installed on it. I checked it and GV shows as running. I have not killed it (I leave it unchecked).
It is not being killed by a task killer... Anyway the GV works when I revceive calls, but I can't dial out.... very weird.
It seems that no one knows what the problem is.
It seems like you could have some kind of troublesome loop going on by having your GV number tied to Hangouts and having it confirmed on two devices. Your statement about when dialing with Hangouts on the laptop, the laptop dials your phone and then the call goes thru to the number leads me to believe this. The problem with confirming to Hangouts on your laptop is that your laptop does not have it's own phone number to share with Hangouts like your phone would. Perhaps your laptop is set as default with GV to Hangouts and this is preventing you from making calls on your phone with GV. It should work. I just tried it. Have you tried removing your GV number from Hangouts on your laptop to see if it will allow it to function properly on your phone?

Hi again.
First - THANK YOU for all the responses.
My statement about dialing from my laptop was actually that when dialing from Hangouts - it dials out (without dialing my phone at all), but when I dial out from the google voice web site (this is different from Hangouts) - www.google.com/voice - when I dial out from this web site - then it dials my phone first, I have to answer it, and then it dials the number which I typed on the laptop... This is very strange. Try it and see what I mean. When I dial Out from the new Hangouts (which is tied to Google +) then it dials out directly - without dialing my cell phone first - then I just talk through the laptop microphone, just like when using skype, for example.
My understanding is that Google are going to replace Google Voice entirely with Hangouts. At the moment they are in "Transition" mode or something.... and that's what's causing these weird things. When Google close down Google Voice and move on to just offering Hangouts - then may be it should all get fixed.
I started digging deaper for questions online. Some people have similar problems and they all happened after introducing Hangouts.
Another thing - I have Hangouts on my phone, and I cannot erase it - cause it is the Nexus 4, and comes installed.
I saw some people have similar problem when Hangouts is installed on your cell phone.
Here is one suggestion from another user:
On Android (phone) you can try these steps:
Go to the account Settings in Hangouts
There should be a section that says "Phone number confirmed" and will show the confirmed #
Click that
It will say "Google will now confirm # is your mobile number with a one-time SMS....
Below that message, you can click "Edit" to edit your number and I believe you can delete it there.
Here is the link I got this from (and edited it a little bit): http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/hangouts/VkjUHFWcbeM
I tried that - and guess what - there are listed actually 2 phone numbers in this Hangouts Setting: my personal phone number, and the GV number. And I cannot delete any of them! I tried edit, and it just asks me about adding a new number, but I can't delete an old one.
So I think this is causing the problem - Hangouts overtook my GV number, when it should only use my cell number - or the opposite - I am not sure. Anyway- it's using both numbers right now. So when I choose in the GV app to "Dial all numbers" with GV - nothing happens - cause I think Hangouts overtook these numbers.
Has any of you tried both Hangouts and GV installed on the same cell phone and have the GV number listed in the Hangouts menu?
Please, check and let me know.
Any suggestions?
Yes. I have both my AT&T cell number and GV number loaded into Hangouts and I have no issue dialing out with my GV number. It auto does that. When you confirm your cell number, it auto loads the GV number also.

And when you go to your Hangouts app - under settings/phone number confirmed - does it show you 2 phne numbers or 1 phone number and which one (your GV number/cell phone number) ???
In my case - Hangouts shows both my cell and my GV numbers - listed there as confirmed.
I tried erasing any of them, but I can't. At this moment Google has not made it possible to erase a number from this settings menu.
I think that is causing the problem for me.
What do you think?
I am so frustrated I can;t use Google Voice on my Nexus 4... I started using Viber.... as almost everyone I know already started using Viber...
It's a shame Google ruined Google Voice and it seems they are going to fully replace it with Hangouts in the upcoming months...
There are so many complaints by other users, I am reading...even the messaging doesn't work that well any more....
But, thanks, to anyone who is reading this post and trying to help me!

That is what I was stating. Under settings in Hangouts, both numbers are listed. When I confirmed my cell number in Hangouts, it detected I have a Google Voice number and automatically added the number with my cell number. Despite this, I am able to dial out with my Google Voice number.

GV with MIUI

Hi,
I have the same issue described above. I am using MIUI rom and GV is not working. I am able to receive calls, but not able to make calls. I use Mi4c phone with MIUI 6 rom. When i flash CM12.1, GV works flawlessly. Any solution will be helpful.

Using G975F Exynos, every now and then I am getting Call Not Sent error when I am trying to make a call. I can't pin point specifics that happen right before that, other than I think that the phone is playing something in the background (stream) or something like that. I try to dial from an address book and immediately the call drops and the above error shows up at the bottom. I may see (again - not scientific, but I think I noticed that occasionally) a difference between dialing from favorite contact - that is pressing the green phone icon in a favorite contact right at the top when you open the contact - vs dialing from the contact when you scroll down to see all the contact's numbers (does it make sense?!).
I would like to emphasize:
1. I don't always get this error, hence why I can't really put a finger as to what transpires right before that.
2.. It happens also when I manually dial, not just from address book.
As spoon as this happens, I see a white icon on the top that says something to the extent of "Voice is working in the background". It lasts a few seconds then disappears. Sometimes I am able to dial right after it disappears, other times I need to wait a few minutes until the phone is "ready" to make the call (no indication of when this happens, it's just a simply trial and error).
Anyone else experience this?
Thanks.
No one else has this issue?!
This is what I see in Voice when I get Call Not Sent. It can lasts from seconds to over a minute where I cannot make any call.
No one?!

Looks like it's a new issue nobody had before i'll put in my 10 cents and say that your app is somehow tied to something else and hence (Busy) and unable to dial i think you're on the right track. I would go into your list of apps i find out which app has the ability to make calls like Viber, fb messenger, skype and disable one by one to find out which one is doing it. Look for that icon you see in that screenshot you posted it doesn't look like a default dialer app icon to me.

It looks to me as the Google Voice app, but I don't necessarily call using GV when I am getting this error (meaning - the last call before starting getting Call Not Sent is not necessarily made using GV but rather the standard, mobile dialer).

Some voice dialers do have the option to set as default it might be causing a conflict disable it or uninstall it and see if the issue persists.
So it has been determined that this issue is happening when I try to dial when a BT headset is connected to the phone. It happens with two different BT headsets (different manufacturer and different types), and it may happen in the first call after turning the BT on or in a repeat call, either to the same number or a different number.
No one else with G975F or other S10+ is experiencing this issue?
Anyone? Is no one else having this issue of CALL NOT SENT when re-dialing with a BT headset connected?
Bump
Still looking for solution. I can't my phone is the only one that refuses to dial/redial when a BT is connected. Anyone?
