Is there anyway to use the webtop without having to have it setup for WIFI. I have already setup tethering modification. This is the standard over the wire update installed and I do NOT want to install a mod or unlock. (it serves no purpose to me doing so) Any ideas?
Just go into Webtop and turn on the wifi hotspot. Open up Firefox and verify that you have connectivity and then you can turn off the hotspot and still keep the 3G connection.

That only works for custom roms that have entitlement disabled. The op said he doesn't have his bl unlocked, so that wouldn't work for him.
EDIT: or maybe it will. Didn't notice he was rooted. But this only works for 4.5.91.
EDIT2: gosh darnit. I can't read. Carry on, nothing to see here.

That doesn't work for me. I am running unlocked, rooted ATT 2.3.4 (webtop hack). I remember it used to work on 2.2.2.

After rooting my phone I figured i would give the hotspot a shot. But when i try to browse on my ipad it brings me to the VZW self provision broadband page.
I normally use wifi tether, but i would rather be able to use the built in because its an infasture netowork vs the ad-hoc wifi tether gives me.
Not the case

actually your right and your wrong at the same time sadly; your right about the infrastructure network vs ad-hoc, but wrong about the 3g hotspot app vs. tethering & portable hotspot not an app.
The 3g hotspot app is a verizon product not googles in the sense your looking at.
The tethering & portable hotspot should have been activated in wireless & networks section, right between "Bluetooth setting & VPN settings" from a froyo(2.2) google standpoint but in our case its not even there.
Hope this clears up the mistakes about froyo tethering & portable hotspot and verizon 3g mobile hotspot app.
Yes it does thanks! I have a nexus one So i know what your talking about.

he stated in the post that he was rooted, he just wanted to use the native tethering application.
Does this mean that if we can get a vanilla Froyo or a custom ROM compiled from source that we'll have the true Android hotspot?

That's all fine and well except that the wifi tether app runs in adhoc mode not infrastructure.

why do not you just use pdanet from market?
There was a new experimental Wifi Tether build that was released dismorning bringing it up to Pre9. I was unable to find a change log, still adhoc?

If its just the one computer you are logging on with use the BT method very easy and works quite well for free and even on non-rooted phone
Ok so I know that you can "hack" your way into opening 3g hotspot for the DInc but I tried doing the same process on the X and it doesn't work. Does anyone know if it is possible to get the "3g hotspot" for free? No I do not care about wireless tether or anything else that requires root. Yes I do know that I can download an app for wired tether. I just want to be able to unlock 3g hotspot for the DX. Thank you!

Yes you can. Team Black Hat had a flashable .zip that allowed for it to work without paying the fee. You do have to be rooted however, as this flashable file needs to be flashed through bootstrap recovery, which requires root.

Thanks for that but I'm looking for a way that you do not have to be tethered. It may seem silly because yes both my phones are rooted but I would like to see if there is non-rooted way. Thanks again.
Yea if you want to share wifi unrooted... you'll have to use pdanet, or pay Verizon... those are your only options. Sorry.

Hmm... That's another reason I like the DInc more... I can just type in a code on it's 3g hotspot and have internet...

I can't remember if I saw it on Xda, but in re-reading this thread, I think some people found that if they open the Hot-Spot app from Verizon, point a PC or phone to the "wifi hotspot" and then turn on airplane mode, then turn it off and go back and try to connect again that it will work.
Don't know if this has been patched in the 2.3.340 OTA or anything... may want to give it a try...
Rooting isn't hard. Download Z4root. Push a button, it does it all. Then download wireless tether from the market. Boom free wireless tethering. No hacking no cracking hard stuff. Root is easy these days

whats your with using the newest wireless tether? it supports infrastructure mode now so you can use it with literally everything (and free!)
if rooting is your concern, as chad said, z4root will automatically do it from your phone in about 10 minutes. all you have to do is press permanent root.
Ok.... This thread was pointless. Yes I know 3g hotspot is called "tethering" but all I'm trying to find out is if you can unlock the 3g hotspot that comes on the phone from verizon. I do not want to download an app to tether internet or even one that will allow me to use my mobile broadband via usb.
If you do not know an answer to my question "How to unlock or hack the 3g mobile hotspot so that I can use it for free?" then please do not post. Thank you very much.
I'm not trying to be rude or mean, I'm just trying to find an answer.
EDIT: Also if you would, please read the other post's before you try to tell me something I already know. YES my phone is rooted and YES I said that in previous posts. Thanks
Turn 3g hotspot on then toggle airport mode on then back off again. Viola free 3g hotspot no hacking no special apps.

Yes you can. you'll need reprogram your phones parameter using QPST.
Hotspot activation
This works on the Droid X Verizon network:
Go to applications and click on 3G Mobile Hotspot
First check to see the settings by hitting menu and selecting Advanced
Click on Wifi AP mode settings
Security should be set to WPA2
Click on show password: You'll need this when logging on to your hotspot
Click save and arrow back to 3G Mobile Hotspot
Check the box to start application. Once it connects:
Go to your phone dial pad and enter this string:
*#*#4636#*#*
A screen will open: Testing
Press Phone information and scroll down to the button that says:
Turn off radio
Press this and wait for it to turn off
Then press it again to turn it back on. Try to do these steps quickly as the Hotspot will turn off by itself and you'll have to redo these steps.
Your hotspot is now activated as a WIFI and you can log on with your password.
The bad part is:
Keep your phone plugged in whenever possible because the battery will drain quickly and everytime you turn off the 3G Hotspot, you'll have to redo these steps.

it doesn't work on my phone with the update but I think you need root in order for Barnacle to work. someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Damn.. That means we have to use the APN method for tethering.
Correct, no Barnacle without root... I haven't had to tether since the update but I planned on using the alternate APN if I had to.
I am using Barnacle with new update on Atrix and works better than Android Wireless Tether for me.

opposite experience for me, barnacle works but has a weak signal and would disconnect and reconnect on its own often. mobile hotspot gives a strong signal throughout the house and does not disconnect on its own. btw barnacle does need root and you can get root with the update, check the dev section.

Same here. Barnacle was working fine before the update, after rooting with GladRoot, updating, and running AfterUpdate, Barnacle is not working any more.
It connects but is slow and drops in and out.

Correct regarding root..........and I have also done a comparison between Barnacle and WiFi Tether.......................Barnacle gave me a consistent 1mbps more on download than WiFi Tether. Uploads were about the same. Don't ask me why, but that was an extended test the other day.

So what am I doing wrong? Barnacle worked on mine pre update and on my X10 prior to that.
My WiFi tether does work but I would like to use Barnacle.
Please help.

4.4 broke my ability to wifi tether through T-Mobile. I used to use FoxFi and a VPN to encrypt the connection. Since upgrading to 4.4 all encrypted packets are just dropped. Any request to a site via HTTPS just times out. Trying to use an unencrypted connection just gives me the paywall, even on other Android devices which I used to be able to tether for free on.
Anyone else on T-Mobile have their wifi tethering through FoxFi broken with 4.4?

My tethering is broken in general. I'm not even getting the paywall. I'm on a Tmo reseller Solavei but no issues until now.
Fix is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47203432#post47203432
the default tethering option works fine, its 3rd party tether apps that are broken. wait until they get updated for 4.4.

If you'd read the fix link you'd know that's not the case. The default tethering app is now allowing data routing through a secondary carrier APN which is filtered instead of the conventional mobile data APN. That has to be disabled in one of the Android settings database files to get it back to working the same way it did on < 4.4, which is routing tethered data through the same APN as the phone uses.

I also can confirm this fix works on my Nexus 4 stock 4.4. I just did it. :good:
Thank you so much for this. I didn't think I was the only one with this issue
I'm on stock everything using OTA 4.4. I'm on fido and have a plan that includes tethering. on 4.3 it was fine but after 4.4, there's on access to Internet when I'm connected to the hotspot. My mobile data is fine and I've checked that my apn settings are correct.
I'm not rooted so I can't modify system files. Any solution?

The fix is not relevant to our problem since we can not turn on the tether at all.

+1 to confirm I have the same issue. I am not rooted running stock 4.4 on Fido. Tethering was working great on 4.3 but since the upgrade to 4.4, devices can connect to the hotspot but not get access to the internet. Can someone confirm for me what the apn settings should be?

Deleting or renaming /data/misc/wifi solves the problem.
I own XT1060 and I don't live in US. I bought this for the sake of having a world phone and when I found out that wifi tetheing locked by Verizon and bootloader cannot be unlocked I felt doomed.
Tried many things and found a bug/exploit, I do this in order and able to reproduce the result
1. Use Easy Tether root edition, and tried tethering
2. Use Foxfi, and tried wifi tethering, it will complain error, ignore it
3. Use PDA.net and turn on wifi tethering, it will complain error, ignore it, then turn on bluetooth tethering, then turn it off
4. REBOOT, the phone will complain about unknown sim, just press OK
then go to settings, tethering and VPN settings and turn on the wifi tethering and voila it works and no root needed.

Do you need to do this everytime we want to tether? Or do we only need to do it once?
Did it work for you?
Has anyone confirmed that this actually works on the Verizon network?
My XT1060 doesn't do an Entitlement check with other SIM cards. It only checks for a subscription with a Verizon SIM for me. When I use my T-Mobile SIM, I can enable Wifi tethering through the system without a 3rd party app. But once I put my Verizon SIM back in, it checks my account for tethering.
i just use easy tether pro, connected by USB, and it works great for me

I think the title of this thread should be updated to state that this only work for the Verizon model WHEN it's not on Verizon's network.
