Is there an XDA forum browser-type of app for the G1 that anyone's made?
If so, where can I find it?
Just curious because it's a bit taxing to have to open up Browser/Steel and navigate from there... I guess I'm just lazy though.
Mods, if this is in the wrong subforum I apologize, it seemed like it was in the right place to me
umm bookmarks? im happy my g1 has such a nice web browser.
I don't think one has been made yet, but I'll second the need for it. A site like XDA just isn't very readable when you have to pan multiple times to finish a sentence.
really? how do you have such a problem? i use the default browser or sometimes opera and its readable and speedy even on EDGE. do you have bad eyes?
A nice low/zero graphics forum skin would be good. That way it would work for the WM users too.
I'm sure there'll be one already out there for vbulletin.
Probably not for the development section though, this topic.

i have the browser autofit and its ok, but the links on the top i have to pan acrossed, plus clicking search and your notifications has posed issues for me in the past, xdas forum isnt 100% g1 browser friendly at the moment, so some small app to browse xdas threads would be great, especially if it listed the threads kind of like when in the market you see different sections there for different types of apps, have the different android threads, and then in there be able to scroll down and maybe even have the app notify you via the notification bar of a new post rather than via email, just an idea
i definately agree with an app for this
wouldn't the site itself have to make a mobile specific version like many sites do for the iphone (and the G1 sometimes)?

Hey! thats on reason why this is my favorite forum software.
PDA
Post this in the apps and games section. This is the development section.
Anyway we can just expand on the PDA forum view?
PDA View
I've set up a mobile version of AndroidClubhouse. It automatically detects when someone accesses the forums through a mobile device, and defaults them top a special mobile template.....its not perfect, but it works much better than trying to scroll a full forum.. If A mod or Admin from XDA wants to hit me up, I'll link them what they need to make a G1 friendly version.
Once again, sorry mods for making the job more of a hassle and putting it in the wrong subforum
I only have Edge where I live so the browser takes a while to load up, it takes longer to pan around and such and you can't really use the browser very well if you only have one hand available (a lot of my texting/emailing/browsing takes place while I walk) but then again that's just me.
If you're going on the site from the browser though, you have to type it in the address bar or go to bookmarks and click on it. For us lazy people, it would be easier to just click to open an app and you're already there. Lol
I know its kinda weird but I was just wondering does anyone else like "watching" the dev's work, I like going to the custom rom thread and reading the post for fun even tho I hardly know what they're talking about O_O
i often find myself doing the same ... mainly looking for a post saying Custom Roms now possible.
I do the exact same thing
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I do the same, I just wish all the people who did watch the tread, only watched and stop asking Devs silly questions.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
spent about an hour last night reading trhough most of it lol
I like to follow it as well. Did some basic linux scripting so I know some of the commands here and there but it's all beyond me. Still fun to read though
I read it all the time, I actually have a shortcut directly to the dev section on my X10 and watch it once in a while for updates... To be honest, this phone is keeping me quite entertained (As opposed to my iphone 4 which I got tired of within 2 days)
I read it regularly. I'll be honest and admit I don't understand everything they're talking about (I'd like try and help if I did), but it still makes for an interesting read and keeps my hopes of success up.
Although (or rather because) i used one of the most user-friendly linux distribution (Unbuntu) for some time, i don't have a clue about linux at all. in the beginning i didn't understand a thing, but just reading the thread regularly lets me understand a little bit about what they're talking. A VEERY little bit...
Developes thread is one of the best places to just read and see how they work. Specially when there is a dscussion about new findngs.

Hey guys can someone translate the so far progress on the cynogen mod and stuff thanks?
Also your not the only one, I keep a eye on those threads but don;t fully understand what they mean
very first thing i do when i visit XDA is go right there to dev thread and read ... even though i dont understand a bit ..
Lol, its nice to know I'm not the only one. Its also nice to know that most of are waiting patiently for a custom rom while others moan.

I think that the devs are trying to:
(In order of 'best' approach?)
-Create (or complete) an autobootable bootloader to allow us to run custom roms.
-Run another firmware on top of the current one (but a certain file, (build.prop?) has to remain in place (one of SE's checks, i think). At the moment, the devs seem to be fixing problems one by one, and at the moment the phone doesn't reboot anymore, but there are still some other problems.

Is there anyway to screen capture grab on the G2 similar to the iphone????
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
There is an app, I had it on my evo when I was rooted but I got a new evo and I kept it stock, only if I remember what the app was called, try looking in the market
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Temp root ur phone with VISIONary and then download screenshot
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
download the SDK open ddms.bat then select your device then screen capture.
Visionary for root then shootme works great
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yea shoot me is easy and simple. Just open app, shake device when you want to take a screenshot. Needs root though
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
any that don't require shaking the phone? i am really uncomfortable shaking my device just to take a screenshot
Shootme also has a mode where you can yell into your phone instead of shaking.

Wow, talk about resurrecting some old threads...
DDMS was actually mentioned earlier in the thread, but I think the OP said he was looking for a method similar to the iPhone (which can take the screenshot on the phone itself). The average person doesn't usually install the SDK at all (and especially not for taking screenshots). Plus, to use DDMS, you need to be physically connected to a computer. Definitely not as convenient as an app like ShootMe (or iPhone like at all).
And in case anyone is wondering what is meant by Dalvik, he is actually referring to the Dalvik Debug Monitor Server that comes with the Android SDK and not Dalvik itself (the VM used to dynamically compile and run all the apps on your phone).

Dalvik itself, or rather himself, would be a Human. Thanks for the clarification. I understand "searching" and "reading" are essential to streamline this whole process, but there's a lot to read and a lot to search, and it isn't always covered, nor is every search perfect for a number of reasons which I'm sure you can infer on your own. A lot of us have jobs and/or family which takes up more time than you may think!
Do you even know what a VM is? Haha don't answer that, it's all good.
Not that this thread is that long, I just happened to click it and as always was trying to be helpful.
I swear, people take this forum WAY TOO SERIOUSLY. XDA is not a real place people, snap out of it, shake it off, stretch, and go for a jog! Girls are way more interesting than cell phones.

Well, I wasn't trying to judge or reprimand you in anyway. I didn't even say you needed to search or read more, so sorry if you took it as that way. (You can check my post history---I usually come to the defense of people who are being told to search or that they are asking dumb questions instead of actually being helped). It's good to be helpful. I was just saying it was an old thread and the solution you proposed probably wasn't what the OP was looking for.
And I was explaining what Dalvik was in case someone came across the thread and got it confused with the dalvik-cache on their phones or something. Your post just said Dalvik and DDMS with nothing else, which isn't too informative (though I guess they could have gone on to do a search themselves for DDMS.bat to see what you were talking about).
And yeah, when talking about Android-related stuff, Dalvik actually is the name for the VM that does the JIT compiling for all of the apps (so not a human). I'm sure there is a person named Dalvik out there, but the dev of the VM named it after a city in Iceland his family was from...
I thought that Dalvik was named after some guys favorite ancestral fishing hole.

All good, it's not that serious. Thanks.
I cant understand why people are using these YouTube guides for rooting their phones and it seems like they are screwing something up almost everytime. I've looked at them and most seem like there are critical steps missing. Also they give no explanation of what is actually going on. If you do a Google search xda shows up in the first few results. So it seems like it could just be pure laziness because people don't want to read and research what they are doing.

Precisely that: Laziness. People aren't willing to just read the instructions.
Eh, for the most part, you're correct. I do like the video guides ALONGSIDE the text guides on XDA. it's nice to get a real-world reference for what step you're on.
But you are correct. Going only off of the youtube vids is generally a bad plan.
Been to a public school lately? Why read when you can watch a video?
BTW always use common sense, and go through as many guides as possible before actually going ahead.
Yes I also say use common sense but its becoming increasingly harder to find people that have the slightest bit of it.

Stop worrying yourself. Not everyone can figure out su adb etc. The videos help visualize what they are doing.

i one who's almost always hates video reviews and instructions. you have to get past too much jibber jabber sometimes to get to the stuff you really want. at least with written instructions i can skim the bs to get to the info i need.
I use both. Theres nothing wrong with using the videos to see what goes on too.
I am one who prefers video. I don't know why but I hate reading for the most part. I will suggest always looking at multiple videos though.
Sent from my rooted HTC EVO using the xda app!
imo videos are good for folks that want to just be told what to do and not really understand what they're doing. I personally prefer to read the material and understand what i'm doing before i'm doing it so if anything happens i don't have to panic and get someone to help me.
I would sum it up similar to how mechanics shops work: some techs are technically-minded and want to know why exactly they're pulling that transmission and how to do it, some techs are just doing it for the money and wouldn't mind watching a video on how to R&R that tranny without knowing why its being done.
Different strokes for different folks, but it does lead to a lot of confusion when someone sees the wrong video on youtube as opposed to reading about rooting in general and applying the principles to the subtleties of different devices.
This has always been the issue of when non-technical people try to gain entry in to the technical world, inadequate solutions are developed for problems that are seemingly complex on the surface but much more simple if we all spent the time to understand it.
People still read? or know how to?

You guys are forgetting that roughly half the population doesn't learn well by reading. It could easily have little to do with intelligence or laziness and more to do with how their brain absorbs information. Some people aren't good at visualizing what they are reading, thus, being able to SEE each step performed is a huge benefit to them. Personally, I learn equally well either way, but most people do not. Perhaps you folks should do a little indepth thinking before you simply write others off as lazy.
Here is a Leraning Styles test
I'm glad some of you have found a method of learning which works well for you, but maybe you should stop being so judgmental of others who learn differently.

I don't think the problem is only that people are using the videos. It's that people completely forego the written directions in favor of only using the video. I totally understand why some people need to use the videos, but that's no reason to ignore the written instructions. A lot of times, they give details that are missing from the video, but the written word can be hard to follow. However, when you read the instructions, watch the video, then go back and forth for reference, you get all the information plus the visual walkthrough.
For example, one of my coworkers wants to root his 004 evo. I directed him to the exact threads on xda that he should read. He called me up a week or so later saying he found videos on youtube and watched them INSTEAD of reading the threads. He tried to follow along with the video, which, for all I know was for an original Evo, and he couldn't get it to work. He then proceeded to ask me questions that were all answered in the threads and said that he had no idea what he was doing and asked me to give him a step-by-step over the phone. I have an older model, so I don't know the specifics of rooting an 004 off-hand. I told him that the only way for him to get a real answer was to read the threads, and he refused. How am I supposed to help someone who refuses to help himself?
ok here is my input about the whole watching videos. If you watch someone physically do something along with reading what they are doing and why, then you gain a more "hands on" aspect, even if you arent the one doing it. Seeing what your supposed to do is ALOT different than seeing it in words..

this is exactly what bothers me the most, i understand that people learn in different ways. there are also people who should not even be attempting to do something they understand nothing about. i am one of the few people that would rather read directions step by step rather than try to follow along with a video that doesnt move at my speed. you can pause a video all you want but you cant exactly speed it up. i have also screwed up but i have learned from my mistakes and there were plenty of them. im not afraid of screwing something up if i did there is nobody to blame but myself.

Because some people are visual learners?! I don't understand why it's hard to understand this concept?! Why do 99% of manuals have pictures on them? Some written guides are not as thorough or organized as others. At least on video, you can hear and see what is going on so you have a backup as to what you're doing. It also allows you to see the reaction to what you're doing instantly before trying it on your own.
Call me crazy, but these online guides are really useful to me.
For me, knowing WHY something is done really cements the process. Guides that are just step by step without an explanation don't really install full confidence in doing the task.
Hey guy's ive been lurking on the droid incredible forms for a while now, flashing every new rom I saw ive tried every single rom on this form lol. But I would like to give back.
I don't know anything about developing for android only minor stuff when trying to make a app. But I do have skills with photoshop (not sure if devs need graphics :/)
But if any devs need any icons or adjustments to images for whatever their working on fill free to leave me a pm and I would be happy to help.
My portfolio is 372designs.com not sure if im not allowed to share links, if not let me know and I'll remove it. And all the my work on their is web designs, but I'm willing to give anything a try

yea i looked into that too, but couldn't find a good place to start, I actually have some ideas for themes
These guys are pretty good with graphics; maybe they can help you out or point you in the right direction. It's not a full fledged theme, but definitely a start with flashables.
