Black screen of death re : 3.2 update - Eee Pad Transformer General

Man, the problems just keep coming.
In addition to constant force closes and very poor performance, I'm now getting the black screen of death after the Honeycomb 3.2 update. Basically, an app will crash and trying to return to the home screen or any other app, simply produces a black screen with the button bar on the bottom. I can use the multitasking button, but any app I go to gives a black screen. Sometimes hitting the power button and unlocking the device brings back a working app, but usually I have to wait for "android system" or something else to force close before I can use the tablet.
All this after a factory reset and minimal installation of my previous apps.
I'm so frustrated at Asus right now. Maybe i should go back to the original firmware at this point!

Not rooted and installing from the Android Market - most of my apps are paid, so not installing them or using something else isn't an option -they worked fine before the update and doubt that's what's causing these problems.
I'm also seeing a bug when you try to share something, sometimes the screen dims and you get nothing unless you rotate the screen (which is not a good option if you are docked!). This has been discussed in another thread.
This update has been by FAR the worst I've experienced with any of my devices

I hate to say it, but here's a theory: if 3.2 really did implement more hardware acceleration throughout the system, then perhaps you have a faulty GPU that's only now being stressed enough to cause issues. Certainly, you're experiencing more problems than anyone else seems to be, and so it does point at your unit as defective in some fashion.

I hope 3.2 didn't break my device - I had already sent it in once before. But if a faulty GPU is the culprit, it shouldn't crash when it's idle doing nothing right? It might crash during a game or something, but not while looking at my wifi settings or reading an email.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk

sell it and get a new one, definitely shouldn't be acting this way especially if you did a full reset. I have never seen this happen before or after 3.2

I think these issues are limited to a few systems since it appears most people are not having issues It would be good to see if the units showing issues have some related hardware or software configurations. The people with errors should send their HW configuration and serial # beginning (ex 30, 40, 50, 60, 70). Also, rooted/not rooted, live wall papers (uses acceleration) or static, apps installed.

If this is the 2nd update, then yes I am noticing some lag. Especially when doing things like you mention which totally frustrates me 'cause it was these types of activities that got so much better with the 3.1 upgrade... at least for me. Smoother swipes between home screen, moving widgets and a few others... sigh
Oh well, just hoping 3.2 will fix these. Asus is getting it this week, please Acer keep up with the Jones on this stuff!
Mine got it a few days ago. During the 2nd reboot, it was stuck with the screen backlight on, but nothing showing up. I had to force it off, then back on. I did get the "update was successful" message after unlocking it. Since then, it seems to be a little slower, especially with screen draws. It still plays videos fine, but the more apps I have open, the slower it changes screens, for example.
I noticed mine was laggy after the update... I thought maybe I installed something that was eating up the CPU, but I think it was probably the update that did it.
It's not horrible, just annoying.
Me too I have been some FC with launcher in addition to the laggyness.

I've had some lagginess, but only after I installed several apps. Skype was one that kept running, so I uninstalled it. Not sure what happened, but I only noticed lag after a few days of running and installing several apps, so I'm having trouble pinning it down.
I just went and backed up my apps with TB and factory reset and restored my apps back and no more lag

ICS : everything is slow, force closing, frustrating

So I waiting a long time to wipe this device as I wanted to wait until ICS was up. I had major issues with honeycomb. Stuff would just stop working, like going into settings would give me a black screen with the word settings in the top left, but no data would populate the screen. I was getting this with other apps as well. I basically had to wait several minutes for things to sort itself out and then it would run fine for a few more minutes before giving me the same problem.
Now with ICS and two factory resets later, I'm getting similar problems and major system hesitation ... for example, selecting a new ringtone takes about 5 seconds to actually play the ringtone. Creating this new post in tapatalk took about 5-10 seconds to load... things delay so much that almost every app gives me a popup stating 7gst the app is not responding and I can either wait or close it.
Has anyone else been experiencing this? These issues make my tablet useless as I use it for work and these constant system delays and hesitations are making it impossible to work with.
On a side note, ICS works amazingly fast on my Galaxy Nexus and HP Touchpad.

Sounds like operator error to me..try to do a full wipe or everything, and start all over with a fresh version of 8.6.5.21, if you are having problems before flashing you will likely have similar problems afterwards..IMO
I would go download the full ICS ROM (I think 317 MB), wipe EVERYTHING, and install that. Everything working fine for me.

I had the same problem. Do a factory reset after upgrading. My market was crashing. I couldn't open any apps. The launcher kept crashing. Once I did a factory reset, everything is smooth and fast.
I did two factory resets (full wipes) already... Do you guys really think that a third one will fix this?

I was having some of these issues when I first upgraded, but a simple hard reboot fixed all the issues perfectly and now my TF101 is smoother than ever.
Android.process.media could be the source of my problems.

I'll try that if this problem comes back, so far I force closed the DRM service based on advice on another forum and the Android.process.media service stopped cranking out cpu cycles immediately.
I've enabled "show cpu usage" in the developers options and the Android.process.media service is gone...
Things finally seem better.

I didn't do anything and it seems fine. I might do a factory reset if it starts showing issues though. I do the same on my Windows PC - once it gets too slow it's time for a new start!
For those with speed issues, dont forget to check hardware acceleration in dev options. It was like night and day for me.

Chrome/AndChat black screen issues

Anyone else having the issue of Chrome going completely black screen? YOu have to hit home and swipe the app away, then it will force close and you can re-open it. I've tried everything, wiping all data and caches, installing new ROMs, and it continues to have the same problem. When I open logcat, it shows me a bunch of errors along the lines of "OpenGLRenderer is out of memory!".
The same problem occurs on AndChat, only worse. On AndChat, I have to reboot the tablet to get it to open again. Force closing it doesn't fix it.
I also get problems running games for extended periods of time. Vendetta Online will just start crashing untili I reboot my tablet.
I've seen a few people with the Chrome problem, but is this issue really so small that no one else is having problems with it? If you have this problem, PLEASE post in this thread so I know I'm not alone and my TF isn't just ****ed up. I'm suspecting it is a memleak in the GPU driver, but it should effect more people than just a few of us...

I'm doubtful that it's a bug with Chrome. It only seems to affect Tegra ICS devices. The exact same issue ("OpenGLRenderer is out of memory!") occurs with other applications. I really think it is a problem with the Tegra ICS GPU driver. It also affects both Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 chipsets.

Performance issues on new Tf300 running build. 26

I just received a brand new Tf300 a few days ago. It is the first tablet I have ever owned and don't know if the performance issues I am experiencing are actually common among other tablets. Whenever I quickly switch from one app to another, the device slows down and then I get a pop up message telling me to wait for the app or force close it. The problem gets worse when I am downloading stuff in the background. I have never had this problem before with any of the 4 android phones I have owned. Does anyone know if there is a solution to this?

Trying doing a cold boot. It also depends on what apps you are using, some might not be complete compatible. A lot of people are having problems with google chrome, also the stock browser is kind wonky. Suggest using Dolphin or Opera.
I havent seen the issue you mentioned personally yet on my TF300, however it has been mentioned a few times on other sites & reviews.
It seems to have something to do with the I/O communication to the memory while downloading/installing multiple things at once through Google Play. Its been said to have an impact on OS performace and that the "wait or FC" message is common. Just hit wait and it will be fine.
If its happening when you are idle...Id say something is running in the background you dont know about and using memory.

I did try a cold boot once and it sisnt so anything, really. I also never actually tried running the stock browser. Immediately after turning on the device, I downloaded Quick ICS Browser. Also, I'm not are if the browser is the main problem affecting the performance, as I seem to be having this issue even when downloading from the market or switching through apps.

I actually have been doing this, but honestly I don't think this is something we should have to do after paying $400 for a brand new tablet that I would assume would be in perfect working condition right out of the box :-/

I have not had any problems switching from apps, even while updating several apps at once on the market. I guess since your Pad is practically brand new, just give it a a day or two of use and see if that helps settle down the system (with a couple of reboots in between). In worst case scenario, I would say exchange it for a new one.

Im not exactly sure that one would consider it a defect. I think its just an example with how the OS performance is affected while installing multiple apps at one time.
Id say you could avoid the problem by installing only a couple things at one time. I have an HTC phone and the same thing happens when I try to install from Google Play and tinker with other stuff at the same time.

You're probably right. Maybe it is the fact that most apps on the market are primarily made for Android phones, not android tablets. I will uninstall all apps and see if I can install one by one to see if I can find out which ones are the ones giving me problems.

I've been having exact same problems on prime (tf201) ... and on top of than random reboots, shut-offs, battery discharging, and non working gps (hardware problem)...
I came to a conclusion that asus sucks... here is why: i have two phones running ICS, and neither has this issues, and both are MUCH faster than prime / tf300 - so it is purely a bunch of software bugs, and asus had SO much time to fix them, and still people across the board have these same problems with transformers
long story short - i retuned prime, and was/am considering tf300... but it looks like i will pass..., although i really like the dock

I DONT Have those issues with my prime. not everyone has them across the board. while some do, slot don't. GPS works great with the dongle Asus sent out for free. alot of the reported issues on both prime and 300 have been reported by various other tablets and phones running ICS. doesn't matter if your two phones don't. its still widely documented ICS issues across the board on most devices running ICS. this is more of a Google issue THST needs addressing. Google is the one who created ICS. these problems are limited to only Asus tablets. just Google ICS issues and tons of hits will pop up across several different devices. Google is the one who needs to step it up and address this.
Asus is a manufacturing company. they make hardware, not software. they still try to do the best they can to solve software issues. Even Asus getting frustrated because they having to try to fix stuff THST Google should be addressing, software wise.
OK, I just had to come back after a week of using and tinkering with my TF300 and after having it factory reseted and doing a cold boot reset it now works FLAWLESSLY. I love this tablet and I have downloaded tons of games that look beautiful on it. The only thing I wish were present were a bigger selection of tablet-friendly apps on the market. I also wish Google would allow us to search apps that are designed for tablets only. I have tried using the Tablified Market app and it is just too slow in my opinion and it has no option to sort by most popular or highest rated.

Nexus 10 freezing and rebooting

Anyone else experiencing this? In the 24 hours I've been using my nexus 10, this has happened at least 10 times. All of a sudden the device becomes unresponsiv, the screen dims until it turns off, and the only way to get the device back on is holding down the power key multiple times until it boots back up. Needless to say, quite frustrating. Otherwise, love this device.

Not quite sure how one loves a device that forces you to reboot ten times in the last 24 hrs. It's like buying a new Honda and loving it even though it stalls ten times a day.
Too many people apparently buy their device to adoringly stare at like a trophy or a collectors item than actually use.
Those all seem like pretty legitimate apps to me. This would suck but I would suggest deleting one app and using the tablet till it happens then rinse repeat till you find the offending program.
Try the secret magic spell: a full wipe

Add me to the list of people with random freezes and reboots. It's happened to me 3 times since I've gotten the tablet a few days ago, and I was using a different app each time. I suspect it's an OS bug rather than an app that's causing it. It's a little disheartening that Google let their new flagship 10" device get released with such a bug. Hopefully they release an OTA update sooner rather than later.
For the record, I rooted using the flashable CWM SuperSU file - I did not use the toolkit.
I have had my 16gb 10 now for almost a week - currently stock and non rooted. No problems whatsoever and I have been working it pretty hard.
Mine has frozen 2-3 times in the past few days. No idea why either. Audio continues to play, and the device responds to button use, but the display stops altogether.

Happened to me several times as well. Last time the screen went black (not off) and the tablet was extremely hot, to the point of burning my hand when I touched it! Seems it was stuck that way for several hours and didn't reboot itself.
I've been having random rebooting and freezes since getting this tablet i've replaced it three times already so i'm tired of calling google about it don't even think they have a solution because we've been waiting since November for them to fix this problem so i decide to turn off location and took HD widgets out and so far my tablet has not frozen or rebooted in two weeks it been working really well hope it continues to perform this way.
Chrome has major stability issues as far as I can tell. It crashes very frequently and causes a complete system lock-up when it does. I've resorted to Firefox. To me, this is absurd on a core first party app. Google: get your act together on Chrome.
I recently noticed this issue and have been reading what a lot of others here have had to say and so far it seems to be related to wifi. I would bet it's a software / kernel / driver issue because others have reported not having the problem before the latest update.
If I think about it, I probably had the lockup/reboot happen once before now and I can't really tell you what I was doing at the time. But I thought nothing of it. I have however found a way to force it to happen. All it takes is a large download (1gig'ish) in uTorrent, the download works fine for about 10 minutes and then the tablet either just restarts, or it first becomes unresponsive to input (screen or buttons) but is still functioning, followed by a hard lock up that can only be fixed with a forced power off.
It may be a buffer issue, or memory leak, I've been able to prolong the lockup by throttling the uTorrent download speed and minimizing the number of active apps running. As suggested in other threads I've disabled location discovery and it may have bought me a little more time but if so it's not much. I can't tell if it's because of the amount of constant data flow coming in, or the number of active connections to different seeders, or more likely a combination of the 2. I can also say that if I attempt to browse the web with either chrome or Dolphin while downloading in uTorrent the freeze or reset happens much quicker.
So for now I'm hoping that in the next update they resolve the issue and will just use my pc for torrent downloading.
T.D.K,
It may help Google resolve this issue if you reported your obvervations in this bug report thread:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39879
I think the wording you used in your post would be sufficent. Nothing helps identify where a bug is more than a repeatable instance of the issue.
Turning off the location services and uninstalling HD widgets sorta worked for me... I still get random reboots though but mostly when I'm using Chrome. Google should have just left the stock android browser and made Chrome optional.

Nope, the problem was submitted to Google months ago and is listed to only receive medium priority. A total system failure that affects every single Nexus device is only given medium priority. Makes me ponder what in glory be would be considered high priority. Maybe if the tablet reached out and kicked you in the balls whenever you looked away from it
