I'm having this problem for awhile, tried different things all end up when tethering my phone shuts off about 45min to 1h of tethering.
Currently on EC05, stock rom and wifi tether 3.0 pre 12 but tried them all and going down in version for more stable one.

Settings, choose device build and select the Epic.
Also, make sure 4G radio is OFF before starting it.
I have all that selected still no luck.

this happened to me on ef02 it only worked when plugged in to a power source.
I'd suggest uninstalling that one and switching to Barnacle Tether. I recall the WiFi Tether app having technical issues that the dev couldn't get around.

Geez that made my phone unbootable (had back up) but made me more searching around that post so thank u. Since I'm on EC05 that didn't work but found patch that modified framework and now pure hot spot working without wifi tether, thanks again. Worked fine!
Update (about 3 days late)
After flashing my GPAD to Vegan, I did get ad-hoc to work through the tether app installed on the continuum (for the newbies like myself: Android has adhoc connecting disabled by default, so you have to use -- from what I can tell -- a custom ROM to connect to an adhoc wireless connection).
The Continuum only needed to be rooted so tethering could be installed.
Trying to root my Continuum. Tried the one click but it just locked up my phone. Pulled battery, do I do it again?
I'm totally new on the androids.
suggestions?

As of right now, you cannot root... I was previously rooted, but the update made it go away T_T. Bubby323 is getting a continuum for a little bit and should have it updated soon
I bought my Continuum yesterday, the 22nd. An update was immediately applied. Spent hours trying to root. Z4root (my go-to) wouldn't work after countless attempts. Gave up on an update.zip recovery. SUPERONECLICK is exactly how I was finally able to root...

anyone get wifi tether to work with froyo update?
ive been using wireless tether 3.0 beta without a problem just select sasmsung fascinate then enable softap mode.
works thanks
I'm currently using Open Garden. It seems to be working great so far. I actually paid for the full version of EasyTether, and there's problems with the Continuum and EasyTether. Evidentially, USB debugging times out after a while. It's no biggie though, for me, because using a wifi tether app is so much simpler.
The new beta from Google works the best because you can enable softap mode so linux and playstations will pick it up. Open garden, barnacle, the wireless tether from the market just use adhoc frequincies so not everything will pick it up.

Ahh... I was not aware of that. Thanks for that info!
The Google beta app works, but my primary problem with it is the fact that it turns off BT every time I tether. I'll be using Open Garden until a newer version is released that doesn't affect my BT connection.
I am running MikShift with 1.8 kernal with Cyan Dragon Theme.
The wireless tether works just fine with the 4g, but it doesn't work with the 3g, are there any threads or a fix or anything info on this?
I'm also having problems with this. I have thread a few post down but unfortunately we haven't found a solution.

The only problem I'm having is that devices connected to my phone via Wireless Tether get a LOT LESS speed than my phone will. Full 4G signal on my phone ~5Megs while a connected device will be pulling about 500K.

The 4G works just fine for me, I just can't get the 3G to work.
I'm having this exact same problem. I haven't been able to figurre anything out either. One this I've noticed is that if I switch to a different app, the tether will stop working until I go back to the wireless tether app itself and then the data will start to flow again.

Guys, I submitted an issue on their google code page, feel free to go comment and knock this thing up to a hot issue so they will look into it. lol
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=878
OK I'm glad to see others are having this issue.
Prior to yesterday, I was only able to tether on 4G using Wired Tether OR Wireless Tether. As of yesterday, I can no longer tether AT ALL.
I've tried flashing back to the completely stock ROM (only had root mod) that preludedrew posted and I'm still experiencing this issue. The only other thing I could possibly do is RUU and then re-root.
Has anyone found a solution to this? Is this a sprint issue or individual phone? Are some people not affected at all? I have been using the stock ROM, rooted and with bcnice's 1.8 GHz kernel since root.
I use my phone as my primary internet so this is a HUGE detriment for me and also a GARGANTUAN downside for the phone. I'm wondering if Sprint is finding a way to outsmart us...
EDIT: Azilink appears to still be working fine for tethering. Although it does take a bit more of a setup and some familiarity (marginal) with adb, it also typically performs much better as well. Brandock made a post about it in the apps forum, a search should pull it up fairly quickly.
Well with stock root wireless tether wasw working fine once I switched roms it stopped working so you do the math

Guess I wasted my whole day yesterday trying to figure this crap out =(
This is an issue with the ROMs not the app or anything. The symlin for /system/bin/sh is wrong....thats why when you go into terminal you see sh3.2 if you remove it and make a new symlink wireless tether will work....i can post the commands I was given that worked fine but I make no guarantees it will work or that it wont do something bad to your phone but I will give you the commands I used.
using terminal and your /system will have to be r/w
rm /system/bin/sh
ln -s /system/bin/sh0 /system/bin/sh

In that case go to Droidstyle's guide in general section. Find section 2 for tw roms, and follow the instructons to the letter for nitsuj's superclean rom. Its pretty much stock, then after that, find my guide on installing kernels, read through and pick one you like. I explained them a little in my first post, instructions are in the second post. After that, download open garden and you should have 0 issues.

Ya that will probably get it to work, except I don't think open garden allows infrastructure tethering (which most tablets require), so stick with your WiFI tether app if that doesn't work.

How can you expect to get accurate help when you provide very little detail? As sendan posted, list your FULL setup.
Ihave NOT flashed any other ROM to the device after I rooted it. I have tried auto, galaxy nexus gsm, fascinate, and nexus one profiles. There are no other modifications to the device other tham the root. It is on 2.3.5
I I just installed CyanogenMod-7.2.0-RCO-Epic last night. I have to say this is the first modded ROM that I am running and I love it.
But I cannot get Wifi Tether to work. I tried the Google version and also Barnacle. They both will run, ask for superuser, and they appear to start. But the SSID is not visible anywhere?
Is there anything out there that can fix this? Wifi Tether was working for me on the Stock Froyo (Rooted) but now wont work.....
Any help would be appreciated.

Check to see if your apps are saved to sd card, then move to sys memory(512MB), they should then be visible in your app drawer.......this is one possibility w/ your issue.
Also, as was suggested: reflash, could be a bad dl or bad flash.

Apps are not installed on the SD Card. Apps are visible in the app drawer.
The apps start fine and say they are running. I remember before I flashed with this ROM and using just the rooted Froyo I would get "Hotspot activated" and sort of a bullseye icon on the top. That does not happen, i only get the wifi tether icon on the top.
The build that I installed says on the first page the wifi drivers and such were fixed.
I am new to MOD'd Roms, if i install a nightly and it messes up, can i just re-install the original Modded ROM (both MTD), i konw that is a really basic question, but dont want to brick my phone.
You could also try the wifi tether that Flastnoles11 posted in the CM7 Discussin and tip sharing thread. It was about the 10th page so roughly just under post 100.

Are you just running the stock ROM? Most custom ROMs have wireless N built-in. MikG as an example.
Yeah, you're not going to be able to make this mod without being rooted, and if you're rooted, you should be able to either flash a ROM that already includes this mod, or just flash a modded stock kernel, which will also take care of it.

Connect to your router with your EVO. Once connected then go to wifi details and click on the AP your connected to. Then it will give you connection details like your connection rate. Anything over 54mb connection rate will be N. The rate will fluctuate but if you're next to the router you should get something like 72mb which is what I usually get on wireless N on my EVO.
