The Aria has been a great phone since I dumped AT&Ts bloatware, and it runs nicely with ATTN1's rom. I bought it with the excitement that AT&T was finally accepting android into their home and I didn't have to pay $530 for a nexus one. I wanted a power house but settled for something available at an acceptable cost. Directly after buying an Aria a release date is finally put out for the Galaxy S. The cost difference is 40% but the performance difference is 400%. I never expected to stray from HTC but $199 for a "Nexus slapping 4" amoled hummingbird" is not passable.
This is not a bad phone and is amazing for such a small device.
yes i too do not stray from HTC smartphones. and prob be getting the aria. however, just saw on engadget that HTC Desire is passed through FCC with ATT band. dont know if i should wait. the specs on captivate sounds good but i rather spend the money on HTC goods. they make better phones i think. Plus i could get the aria for free. it has such high reviews. i do know if i really need a 1ghz processor even it sounds nice to have. but i don't want to fork over 2 hundo for these new phones. we'll see.
If you want a pocket computer, then maybe consider the change. But other than the screen, and faster cpu, what do you get out of the phone purchase? It runs the same apps, I haven't encountered any apps yet that actually slow the aria down. The aria can do live wallpapers etc. Other thing is, 2.2 should be out before you know it and the aria will be a whole new beast again.
Also, I highly recommend sticking to HTC, truth is they really want to compete with apple, and I would like them to have my money to do so, I like competition in the marketplace.
Also, also, I've had a oled screen on a media player, and for the first week, the screens are amazing, after that they become normal. Keep that in mind.
I would only buy it, if you like the idea of more screen real estate, a bigger phone to hold on to, and a faster cpu. I dunno if that phone features the stereo mics, if it does, thats a good reason to consider too, the n1's is amazing.
Anyone ditching there n1 for the new mytouch 4g? Would it be worth it to ditch the n1?

I don't even have an Nexus One and I don't think that's a good idea. I've seen the specs and I'm not that impressed.
No. Its all about personal preference, and I personally love my N1.

It's good but I mean the N1 has all that besides maybe the front camera and a 3.7" display instead of 3.8" display. But like he said...it's all preference
Don't forget the newest Snapdragon and GPU and the 768MB memory and 4GB of ROM.
I love my N1, but this is pretty solid. Though I'm clinging on to my N1 until the Gingerbread update to see what it's all about. Then, as soon as the source code is released, I'll sell the N1 at an all time high on eBay to the desperate souls wanting a taste of Gingerbread.
Then hopefully use the money to help buy a MT4G outright and wait a few weeks for CM's Gingerbread since the source would have been released.
This is all contingent on the assumption that the MT4g doesn't have the rooting issues that is plaguing the G2, DHD, etc..
Edit: Also don't forget about the very fast HSPA+ (the reason we're even calling it the -4G)
Kind of ironic that the codename is glacier even though it's such a fast phone in almost every right lol

The ONLY reason I'd switch is to get a 4.3" screen or 3.7-4.2" screen with a higher resolution (a la the retina display), and of course faster processor/GPU.
It bothers me that every carrier in the US has a 4.0 or 4.3" (native-)Android phone except for T-Mobile. (HD2 is not native Android.)
Not worth it...do yourself a favor and keep the N1 for now (till the new year when a lot of new devices hit the market).

Really? I like my N1 but wouldn't mind having a better processor, better touch sensor, more responsive screen, better antenna, more RAM and a front facing camera.
I don't think people are doing their research, I love my N1 but I had this bad boy since January. The myTouch 4g is not the same with just a ffc and a 3.8" screen, It's BETTER!
I don't know I had my nexus since launch haven't seen anything yet to come close

I'd wait. There's bound to be a more powerful Android phone released for the holidays. Maybe a stock 1.5GHz device. Try to wait until Dec. That's what I'm doing even though I'm ready to throw this G1 in front of a moving car.
I am thinking I will get the MT4G. My N1 has terrible reception at work while my coworkers with tmo have better signals. My screen locks up and I have to remove the battery at least once a day. I am out of space on my phone. I don't have many apps but I am out of space.
The phone will be rooted before long and there will be a custom ROM so I am not too worried about the custom interface.
I'm growing so bored of my N1. I want to want every new phone that comes out, but there's always ONE thing about a device that comes out that is just retarded and breaks the deal. Evo 4G; no GSM, SGS phones; bad GPS and no stock, G2; No permanent root or custom ROMS, same with the Desire HD and apparently this phone. It's getting pretty depressing.
I even wanted to go w the new WP7 phones, but the OS is useless to me with no voice or multitasking or C&P. Even though I think it looks great and has potential I'll have to wait til V2.0.
I really want a WebOS experience, but there is nothing compelling about the current hardware.
Long story short, this year is bull****. If you got a smartphone in 2010, just keep it because every phone is basically the same or you'd be giving one thing up for another. I suggest waiting til the new year after CES with better phones with better screens, gpu's and OS's and hardware. No compromises.
I've been thinking about this too. Really there is nothing about the phone making it much better than my N1. Wifi calling would be nice since my signal at home sucks but otherwise there isn't much more it offers over my N1.
Sure it has more internal memory but I've been using a2ext since my G1 so no issues with running out of memory or apps. Cell reception on my G1 was MUCH better and as annoying at it is when my N1 can't hold a signal nearly as well it's not a reason to jump ship to a comparable phone hardware wise and no guarantee of better signal strength.

It IS a better processor than our Nexus Ones! Why does everyone assume that just because it's clocked the same, it's the same processor? This is a second generation Snapdragon on a 45nm architecture with an Adreno 205 GPU. The processor SMOKES ours.
That being said, I'm holding out till January... I want to see what, if anything, happens with the rumored new developer phone.

It seems to me that you have to pay extra to tether and use your phone as a wifi hotspot. With the n1, you can do it for free for now I am staying with my n1.
I had to pick one up. Im going to hang on to my n1. so far I think its awesome. at work I have absolutely no signal so the wifi calling is a plus. aswell as being able to video chat with yahoo messenger.

Hey G2 people!
I just got this phone for free and I was wondering, is there anything else new on the horizon that I should wait for (and therefore sell this phone)?
I have the option to go with this or the Vibrant, (was offered both). Not sure which route I should pick or if I shouldn't pick either at all and just sell it off and put that towards something else.
Any input on the matter would be great.
Take it, the ETF is $200 but they still fetch almost $400 on ebay (since the free G2 deal is harder to get now than it was in November).
I'm kinda holding off on selling mine yet, I might just do it and go get a Virgin Optimus if/when those come around. Trading down sounds like a yucky idea but I wouldn't mind a considerably cheaper bill <3

Oh, I wasn't going to cancel on my contract, since I'm perfectly happy with my HD2. Lawl.
The history of phones with proper keyboards is that this is only the SECOND decent one (after the DREAM). All the other phones with keyboards have some stupid crap that makes the keyboard useless (like improperly aligned buttons -- see anything motorola for example). The wait was 2 years. If history repeats, it could be another 2 years before another good phone becomes available.
Note that there will ALWAYS be something newer and better waiting to come in the future. This will NEVER change. At some point, you need to say to yourself... ok, that's enough waiting!

Hmm, thank you, you make a good point. How "fast" is the G2 under stock speeds? I am aware of the crazy 1.8 GHZ overclock going on with this processor (I'm still amazed that the processor doesn't melt). Do all of you guys run it at 1.8 GHZ all the time? Or do you just keep it at 1.4 or 1.5?
Also, any input about the Vibrant? Any users who moved to the G2 from the Vibrant?

I generally keep mine at the stock 800 MHz, sometimes I run it at about 1 GHz, and I only crank it up to 1.5 GHz for benchmarking. It runs really smooth with very little or no lag at 800 MHz even with live wallpapers and widgets, and at 1 GHz, it's perfect in my opinion.
I think this is the best phone you will see on T-Mobile for quite a while. To me, it's significantly better than the Vibrant, Nexus S, or the new MyTouch, and I think it will be solid for a few years as it is an excellent phone with a strong dev community.

Hmm, thanks for that input, I appreciate it. I guess I'm going to finally make the move from WinMo (I'm one of the few nutjobs who actually like Windows Mobile) to Android soon from my HD2. With the whole MAGDLR going on, I'm going to let that settle over the next few months before I permanently put Android on that.
I'm not sure about this, but does the G2 have a separate GPU chip (Like the Vibrant), or is the SNapdragon in the G2 an "does-everything" kinda of chip?

Android is light years ahead of WinMo. Android is so much smoother, more stable, and more usable. You will not be disappointed if you get the G2.
The GPU is integrated into the Snapdragon chip.

I had a pretty poor impression of the plastic housing of the Galaxy S devices based on comments like this one. But when I went to the store and actually played with one, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, its plastic and light. But didn't feel as cheap or poorly made as I had imagined. The build quality seems fairly solid, but that's just a personal opinion. And not nearly impressive (or sturdy feeling) as a brushed aluminum housing.
Physical design aside, negative comments I've read here and elsewhere regarding various issues with the Samsung devices (CPU lag, GPS issues) as well as poor customer support have been enough to turn me away from that manufacturer. Plus, I've read posts by a couple users on here that have owned both a Galaxy S device and the Vision, and say that the Vision is a better phone hands-down.

Your welcome! I think the only thing you are really gaining with the Vibrant is the bigger screen, which is also slightly more vivid due to it being AMOLED. But direct comparisons in reviews I've read (haven't had a chance to compare side-by-side personally) say the display on the Vibrant/Galaxy S is only slightly better than the display on the G2. The display on the G2 is still really darned good!
The Galaxy S phones have a much better speaker as well as the nicer screen and bigger internal storage. The negative points of the Galaxy have been debated again and again, but it does handle multimedia better, as well as shooting better video and pictures, in my opinion.
I still wouldn't swap my DZ for one though, even if you paid me - I NEED my keyboard, plus compared to my friend's Galaxy S, the battery life is WAY better
You just have to try both out and see what you like. I personally have both the Vibrant and the G2 and I have to say I like the Vibrant much better. Not only is it significantly lighter and won't weigh my pants down, the screen on the Vibrant just appears so much nicer than on the G2. While the G2 screen is nice, it appears no different than the one on the Touch Pro 2 that I had.

I keep my max frequency in SetCPU at 1.5GHz, but I use the on demand governor so it's only that fast when it needs to be.

I haven't touched the clock speed -- running it at 800 MHz. The thing is just wickedly fast. Most of this has to do with having a very decent GPU, and out-of-this-world I/O performance thanks to the eMMC. Changing the clock speed really won't yield a major overall performance improvement -- it will just benefit functions that are computationally intense...

I've actually seen the Vibrant in person, while I only played with it for like a minute, I remember noticing how "artificial" the screen looked. The colors just "popped" too much, like it was on max saturation settings.
But yeah, I guess I'm excited to have a look at a stock android phone for the first time (I hate any skin over it).

Sold my galaxy s, too many damn problems. Fixable, yes, but the list is almost endless G2 is the first phone I've ever had that is 'complete' from my perspective. Other phones advertise a lot, but don't do what they say on the tin. The galaxy s screen was very nice and bright, but as soon as you hold it at a slight angle it goes blue tinted.

You sir, are smoking crack. The screen on the TP2 is not even close.
as an owner of both, i personally prefer the vibrant, when its not out for repairs. In the last 60 days i have had the vibrant fewer days than the repair shop.
Vibrant has a much larger screen, more basic layout, and is a LOT lighter. Desire Z has a slower processor but sense runs faster, and the more i use it the more i realize that sense is... nicer. just a better, more thought out layout for everything.
Personally given the choice i like my vibrant better, but its not very relyable and the canadian version anyways has a high tendancy to crash and burn, so given this information thats why i currently use my Desire Z.
In short: Vibrant has a much nicer screen, i like it better
Desire Z is more reliable, very nice phone well worth keeping considering vibrants issues
Hey all, the Samsung Vibrant 4G is officially released today, and I am having a tough time deciding between the two phones. Im leaning towards the MyTouch because the camera has LED flash, and also from a few benchmarks I've seen it seems to outperform the Samsung power-wise... However the Samsung has a better screen (Super AMOLED) and from what I can tell, a better speaker.
However, I did notice many places mentioning Mt4G is HSPA+ "14 Mbps" while the Samsung has a theoretical HSPA+ "21 Mbps".
Can the Samsung actually pull faster data even though it's on the same 4G network?
Also, for those of you that have the MyTouch, are happy with your decision, or are you looking forward to switching to the Samsung 4g? Why or why not?

I would stick with the mytouch. personally I think it has better development. the 4g is fast enough on this phone. Samsung phones these days have beautiful screens, but I think the mytouch is nice overall.
I have a Vibrant and I am thinking the mytouch 4g would be a better choice even though it's an extra hundered dollars after the mail in rebates. Has a flash and a better CPU.
Yeah, I'm happy with the MT4G. My brother has the Samsun Epic (I think that's the one) - different carrier, but still, beyond the nice screen the mytouch is a better all around device. It's all up to personal taste - but the samsung phones have a very light plastic body (feels a bit cheaply made, but that might just be a subconcious effect of it being so light), plus Samsung is notorious for having glitches with their phones. HTC makes solid phones with great hardware. The MT4G feels like an expensive phone - it's got a nice solid body, metal accents, a little extra weight (which I like). Plus re: the screen - the definition on the AMOLED screens is awesome, but I actually have found that the colors on them are a bit off, like a little too saturated or something. I actually prefer the color palate of the mytouch.

It's true - the mytouch 4g was manufactured with 2 varying screens. I don't think it's 100% that all good ones are from china, but most seem to be. I know from personal experience - my first one was made in taiwan, and I actually didn't even become aware of the issue until I read about it on here. It's the kind of thing that, if you were never made aware of it, you'd probably never notice it, but having had the 'bad' screen and trading it in for a 'good' one (which was indeed made in China) the difference is REALLY noticeable. Richer colors and much better viewing angles. The 'bad' one is washed out in comparison. Anyway, this isn't a reason to NOT get the phone, but it is good to know about the issue going in.
Re: the speaker, yeah it's not the best, but it's not like it's terrible. It's good enough for voice calls, but really - making calls and/or listening to music will always sound better through headphones/earbuds than through the external speaker.
And yes, it will say where it was made on the outside of the box. There are a couple of ways to ensure what quality the screen is once you've got the phone turned on, but the only thing you can go by when picking a unit is where it was made on the box. That said, more of the good units seem to come from China.

I don't think youll notice much of a difference going from your current device to the Galaxy 4G. Theyre both similar in specs right?
I don't think it's worth the money and hassle to 'upgrade' to something thats now considered outdated. Maybe if Samsung had released the phone earlier but its a little too late especially now with dual core phones being released very soon.
First of all we covered this few months back as actual MT4G speed compared to the fluke gimmick of Vibrant 4G by SamSUX trying to resell same device claiming the theoretical HSPA+ RV1 speed of 21mbps where MT4G is capped at 14.4mbps.

Now I can't actually find the other thread where we covered this as it was months ago but if you look under General you might find it. Other than SGX540 and SAMOLED Vibrant has nothing on MT4G.
I would stay away from Samsung, because they release devices and don't bother with them early on, and then they release things with the intent on selling you or trying to sell you a future "better device". This is just a vibrant with HSPA+, you guys have all seen the lack of CM because of the lack of certain things that Samsung was supposed to put out. . .

I ordered the myTouch 4G (red) on Wednesday and received it last night (Friday).
I ripped open that package, and the first thing I see... "Made in Taiwan". I almost threw it across the room.. ... but decided to open it. The packaging is really nice, I like that it comes with that carrying case thing. Turned on the phone, and the first thing I did was install Terminal Emulator. "dmesg", enter.. Scrolled back up...

I'm currently looking for good/free apps that will let me stream from my Network Drive straight to the phone...
Screen Share lets me do this, but it wont play any of my movies! I've installed vPlayer and that works standalone to play my files, but it doesnt seem there's any way to set vPlayer to be the set player system-wide.. Or at least from within the Screen Share app?

Are you trying to decide if you should get an HTC Sensation and upgrade your HD2? Looking at those super awesome midnight deals over at T-Mobile.com for FREE sensations, and find it somewhat irresistible?

I have an HD2, and I just added a second line so my girlfriend could get the FREE Sensation, and I just spent a little bit playing around with both of them side-by-side.
They've very similar, I didn't really notice that big of a difference in speed between the phones. The brightness and vividness of the Sensation is of course much better, but it doesn't really "BLOW AWAY' the HD2. Don't get me wrong, it's a really nice display, but the qHD didn't make me gasp or anything. (unlike the SUPER AMOLED+).
In quadrant, she got 1440, and I got 1348. In speedtest.net, she got about 3.1 MB/s down, and I got 2.7 MB/s down.
The weight, thickness, height, and width are all about the same, with the Sensation being slivers less in each category.
The back of the Sensation is rounded, letting it sit in your hand better, but I think it also makes it feel less "sturdy". Maybe that's just because I had a rubber case on mine.
I was insanely jealous of her for the last few days while knowing that her phone was coming and she'd have a better phone than me, but honestly, now that I'm playing around with it a little bit, I'm not too worried. Sure, it has better technical specifications, dual core, more RAM, dual camera, better screen...ect... but it's nothing crazy awesome.
If you're on the fence on whether or not you should upgrade to the HTC Sensation or not, don't get me wrong; it's an amazing phone, just not "necessary".
Anyways, save a bit of your money, and instead just buy an extended battery for your HD2, or save up for the Galaxy S2 or Samsung Hercules, or whatever else is coming after that. I know I will be. Plus, with the incredible support by the community here for hacking new ROMs onto it, I'd stick with the HD2 for the time being.

I know exactly what you mean, yesterday i was with a friend that bought the S2, I was so jealous ), but only until we putted our phones side by side, there wasn´t a difference between speeds, the screen is much bright of course, but it feels somewhat artificial to me, the camera has very nice colors, more vivid than the HD2 runing Android, better but not huge difference, and what blowed me away was that my HD2 was faster to open some apps, I know that the his S2 is bone stock but that reminded me that the time to upgrade to something new hasn´t come yet, and when i started to boot 4 different roms my friend couldn´t believe it..
The HD2 is still a great phone..

All of those are about the same on Sensation stock as they are on HD2 CM7...
This makes me feel so much better, but at the same time feeling disappointed that there hasn't really been a major improvement in easily recognisable performance

Well, we are comparing custom ROMs with bloated stock ROMs so it's not really fair.
If you loaded up a fully working CM7 ROM on a sensation it would obliterate the HD2, but that is far off, so for now the HD2 for me is the preferred phone. I may even wait for some quad core action before I upgrade.
with hd2 in some ROMs you can get 3000 points in quadrant with a bit of overclocking and of course playing around ppp/rmnet, switching roms, you can go up 3,3mbps in download, but we got an awesome development on this awesome phone, and we're still waiting for new Desire Kernel and GB to solve all current problems
i will not buy the htc sensation because i can buy 3 hd2 with that price, and i wouldn't feel the BIG difference, but in the future, sgs2 will be my phone (i never buyed a phone >180€, maybe i'll have to wait 2 years and i'll use rock solid custom ROMs )
Have to disagree, the Sensataion is far superior on every level, the camera/video is arguably the best out there, the colours are vivid (dense and rich), the speed is obviously faster, it boots in seconds. Opens apps very quickly (as quick as my g2x which has been modded with cy 7, netflix and web browsing, lightening on the 4g network... It feels very comfortable to hold, and you don't sense your holding a large phone, great design..Don't get me wrong, I love my Hd2 (I've owned about 4 or more) and the spare battery helps. But honestly, the Sensation is a truly exceptionaldevice... The camera and video is quite incredible....

I used a sensation for about 2 weeks, couldn't wait to get back on my HD2, the stock ROM on the sensation to me is pretty bad, the UI lagged, the camera was ok but 8mp isn't a must have for me. It didn't seem to open apps that much faster than my current CM7 ROM, 4G was slightly faster than HSDPA, I dunno, just didn't wow me.

Do you think it's worth the money, especially when there's the g2x for a much cheaper price?
I'd take a Sensation over the g2x because
1) there is going to be much much more development for it.
2) qHD
3) the g2x will probably never be able to run Sense.

I agree with you, the Sensation IS superior on every level. But it's not so incredibly better to warrant purchasing a new $600 phone. (Unless you have tons of disposable income.)
I know that the Sensation bootloader just got unlocked (or at least is planning to become unlocked in the near future according to HTC). So that'll give it some hacking support, but still....
Yes, the camera is much better, but nothing to blow someone out of the water.
For comparison, I went from a HTC: G1 original Android phone, to a HD2, and patiently waited with the WinMo 6.5 until Android on SD was released. It's a WORLD of difference between a Android HD2 and an original G1.
I think I can justify waiting for a Samsung Hercules, or a Samsung Galaxy 3D.

what a lot of us dont really get the point is to accept that yes..the HD2 is getting old and yes other HTC device's are getting better hardware and software in comparison with the HD2.
However we still claim HD2 to be the best device..just because we have the power to run multiple OS's. No doubt thats a strong point but we will have to let it go someday.
I am thinking myself to go for the HTC Sensation....but doesnt mean i will not use my HD2...

No, the reason is that we can run multiple ROMs of the same OS optimized to run about as well/better than the stock sensation ROM, the only thing the sensation has over the HD2 IMO is the camera and 1080p playback, other than that I would much rather have CM7 on my HD2.

No, what I actually mean to say, is although hardware and software is getting better and better on other devices, it's worth it to wait and continue using a still very relevant HD2, updating the ROM's to current OS's, so you can hold off buying a new phone and instead save money to get an even BETTER piece of hardware 4-6 months down the road.

true that. but look after a point we too know that a native android device will still have an advantage over our Hd2 roms. You know...i have been running the American android SD version for months now..but when it comes to NAND somehow I cant make my mind...i still love WM6.5 and the battery life is great....something which i am a little skeptical on nand android !

yeah...of course i agree....we can continue to use it i believe atleast for the next 1-2 year..unless somesort of amazing phone technology comes up making my HD2 obsolete.
