Acer A500 is now also the Liberty G100 ? - Acer Iconia A500

Hi, just spotted this in my local MediaMarkt store here in Germany. maybe this was already well known to all you folks out there.
http://www.packardbell.de/pb/en/GB/content/model/XE.H7EEN.002
a quick hold and check and not a lot of difference apart from the Glossy back cover (not nice) and certainly the power adaptor fits and was happily charging my Acer.
Perhaps we might get a few more peripheral or even a better power adapator available

Hahaha very true
and look at the accessories, spot any similarities LOL, well no wonder since Packerd Bell belongs to Acer. But i like the covers
http://store.packardbell.com/store/pbemea/en_GB/list/categoryID.56314800
BTW i see some build differences excluding the glossy back, assembly looks a bit different , does it feel well build?

Acer owns a group of brands. Packard Bell is one of them so most of the products in each of the brands are just re-branded devices suited for whatever is most popular in various regions. We have Acer, Emachines and Gateway stuff in the U.S and Packard Bell joins the fray overseas.

Yeah .... "Cousin Itt" was spotted back in May

HTC Topaz (Touch Diamond 2) - real or fake?

Hi. I'm from Moscow, Russia and I've got a problem with my future (i hope) HTC Topaz.
After analyzing our(Russian) market I've came to a conclusion that there are at least 2 types of this device:
1. From Taiwan, certified, with guarantee, with Russian windows mobile - i.e. official one - 497.2$
2. From China, NOT certified, there are NO guarantee, English windows, the only document which comes with this device is a cash-memo and user manual - that's all (as salesman told me). price - 396$
100$ difference is a big money in my case. English Windows is not a problem, 'cause there are lots of info on howto change firmware. as for the guarantee - all the stuff i bought earlier (notebooks, cameras) are working just fine, I've never been at the service center before - so i hope i won't need one in future.
The question is: how to determine that the device I'm going to buy (before actually buying it; I'll have nearly 10-20 min) is a real one and not a fake like e.g. "HTS tauch brilliant2" or "Pear iFone 5g", that inside it's absolutely identical to the certified one, that the hardware is the same and I'll be able to change firmware. One of the problems is i won't be able to insert Sim and make a call, test WiFi and etc, 'cause the phone is probably locked. Is there any way, any program that allows to display a list of hardware inside this PDA on its screen or on the screen of notebook. Or maybe there is a list of serial numbers somewhere and i can compare them to the one i'll see under the battery? Maybe someone has bought it for extremely low price and really satisfied with it?
Any ideas and opinions are appreciated!
Thnx!
Best regards, Rudbur.
$396 is fake diamond 2 - it is easy to figure out - just turn it on and you'll see for yourself. real greyimport diamond 2 costs now $500, but it will has no manufacturer warranty anyway, don't get yourself tricked... if you want warranty - buy legally imported PCT device.
Oh, fellow countryman! Thanks for the answer!
You probably know (price.ru) what stores i mean. So, let's assume this: I'm ordering two different HTCs: one for 400$ and one for 500$. I turn them on (simultaneously), and what should i expect when testing the fake one?
If there's no difference at all - same buttons, same size, same menu and etc (except language: russian and english), should i buy cheapest?
oh, and i heard or read somewhere that china shops offer real topaz for 333$. Or am i wrong?
The Chinese "copies" aren't actually the same at all.
The names are similar/identical, and they try to mimmick the physical appearance of a genuine device, but the software and internals are all different. Usually there a obvious differences like a lower resolution camera, room for dual SIM cards etc.
I've never seen one myself, but I would imagine once you switch it on you'll get default Windows Mobile with no HTC add-ons. I doubt they have gone to the trouble of faking an entire HTC ROM as well - but I might be wrong.
Hi,
I can testify here, as I have been living in China for a while, and buying phones from the grey market for a while too.
a few things to know:
Real fake chinese stuff will not even have HTC written on it. MTC or something like that. The plastic looks cheap, and it wouldn't even have winmo on it. I saw a "Nolia N95" the other day with the Sony Ericsson interface on it!
Then, in china, you got an official one for real cheap, but the brand is Dopodo, and they don't have wifi built-in. It's the real stuff, but for chinese market only.
At last, the grey market stuff, like mine which I paid the equivalent of 400USD has, I believe "fallen from the truck" in HK... So it got the HK Rom in it, ot Taiwanese, not so certain, as it was in CHS, and they use CHT in those regions.
So, briefly, chinese fake will be very, very easy to spot Hope that helps!
Thanks to you all, guys. I hope the shop I'm going to buy from will allow me to test these devices and save few bucks. I emailed them earlier, asking about guarantee, prices and so on, but they haven't answered yet.
kipue, your opinion is especially important, because you lived there, you know what's what. So I'll draw attention to the labels on it, camera, functioning of wifi, windows mobile menus and all.
After actually buying it I'll post a reply here.
Best regards, Rudbur.

Galaxy Tab compatible ereader and pda cases?

Any which way, itll be a month or so before cases specifically for the tab start trickling into my homeland Russia.
So, has anyone got a generic case yet? The tech market where i bought mine said there were compatible cases out there from ereaders and the like.
Im not sure i can cope with ordering a case from abroad...
I know Noreve is extremely popular in Russia.
They got some extremely nice case for Tab with built-in stand and other tricks.
Amazon both .com and .co.uk are full with cases for tab.
Even e-bay got some.
I have seen that one case at http://www.noreverussia.com/noreve/pda/samsung/samsung_2118.html
To be honest I really don't want my gadget case to hold my passport and business cards.I could use something
with no pockets until some better stuff comes out. That tradition case is like $120 and pretty grotesque...
EDIT: upon closer inspection it looks quite good. If anyone has the ipad version id be interested to know if its svelte enough?
What I actually had on my mind was this one/ but upon closer inspection it looks identical to me
The case from my old Archos 704 is a near perfect fit. The Tab is quite a bit thinner, but otherwise it's perfect.
Could you take a picture please? This would be much cheaper than the case noreve... preferably of the place where it seems loose.
I assume that last post, requesting a photo, was meant for me.
It was... thanks. Pity its a sleeve rather than a cutout case. Whats it called, do you know?
Really don't know if it has it's own name. It's the case from an Archos 704, that was part of the standard archos retail package. I have no idea if they're available alone, but if not, there are quite often people selling broken archos 704's or 705's on ebay, maybe get in touch with one of them.

No SAMSUNG logo above the screen on Swedish retail version

Was this an official outlet? Sounds more likely he's got his hands on prototypes or review models...
I'd stay away from a device without Samsung Branding, as when have you known Samsung not to stick their logo on the phone?
hmm...
If I am not mistaken, the Korean models have no Samsung logo on the front.

Samsung not having a Bright White logo on GS II is strange!! I can not agree more but I made the guy call his boss and ask!! and I made sure that what I saw was retail version with 1.2GHZ CPU.
Now I have more ....
As you know, from one certain date Samsung replaced pictures with ones with logo. from then almost every online store and mobile reviewer changed their pictures too. Recently I realized Telenor and Tele2 (bigest phone companies in sweden) changed back pictures to ones without Samsung logo.
You can chek it yourself.( As I am sure you know! web sites are .se rather than .com or ...)

Nexus S. It has the Samsung in the back cover.
But I don't believe it would come to sweden without Samsung text in front, when it does in Finland.
I have my doubts about this information. I don't doubt the veracity of what you're saying, but of the information you were given.
First, I wouldn't put it past the regional marketing branch of Samsung to hand out some of the former prototype devices to retailers to look at and Media Markt may have mistook it for a display model. Second, the very fact that Samsung doesn't include an MHI adapter cable is strange, especially when they're rare to come by and other manufacturers like Nokia have set the standard (my N8 came with an HDMI cable, USB-to-Go cable, you name it), so I think the local MM manager is just going on logic without really checking things up.
Yesterday I was in an ElGiganten in Stockholm and the whole front of the store was decked out in huge display boards. They expected to be ready for release on May 6, and kind of miffed about having to wait until May 12. Won't they look rediculous when they realize all their expensive marketing material doesn't even look like the device to be sold - with a Samsung logo on it.
I would be very surprised if the hardware versions delivered to the various EU countries have any significant differences (and I prefer the Samsung lable on the front). But then again, stranger things have happened.
The samsung brand is on the back... Strangely like the iPhone?!
And its not just Sweden. If you visit the Samsung page (swedish, finnish, whatever), only the front page and top images have it - the rest in the actual specification/advertisment of the phone doesnt have it. Three UK shows it without the name. Etc and so on.
You're right about the local Samsung page, it's a mixed bag.
The retailer pictures vary, but the OP is right in saying that a surprising number of retailers now or still have the photos without the logo on the front.
If this is true, it makes me worry that there might be other less benign differences from the units that we've seen from the UK, like cheaper camera sensors or the like.
Let's hope that there is no hardware difference in EU. I really hate it when they do that.
The worst case scenario is Samsung having many first production devices that we know as test devices mostly with 1 GHZ CPU and then they realized that they want to go with 1.2 GHZ and the Samsung LOGO and rest is not so hard to guess since CPU speed is just the matter of over clocking old devices and ..... OH just find a cold place in north to get rid of them ))))
I really hope that I am wrong ..... we will know in less than 5 days.
Danish version...
.... seems to be just like the Swedish version - or rather the version i bought.
No logo on front - also no NFC, and only 16 Gb version without memorycard in the box. BUT... also no HDMI-converter. This version actually comes from warehouses in Sweden, where Telia stores it.
But the specs on the phone shows 1,2 Ghz dual-core, and the rest of the specs fully complies with the specs from Samsung on this phone.

This is because usually carriers force their logos on the front. This was partially the reason why iPhone arrived so late in Korea. Apple wouldn't let anyone touch'em.

The Nordic countries always share the same version (at least in my experience of Samsung).
Has it already been released in Denmark???
Could you use Android System Info and see if it looks the same as Swedroid's UK device shown in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt7mdInSWqk&feature=relmfu
At 3:26 it shows some CPU info (although not entirely accurate, it does show the use of the CPU going up to 1.2 GHz).
I Saw CONVERTER WITH MY EYES!!!
People ! I saw the converter that comes with GSII in box in Sweden @ least from Media Market it is a Charger/HDMI converter you use it to charge cell phone or plug HDMI cable. You can see it in the post here for Infuse4G "http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Infuse-4G-HDMI-out-Adapter-Demonstration_id18667"
So now you can charge and use HDMI @ same time.

Is it the Exynos 1.2?

should i get 10.1 or other tablet?

hello. i heard that the galaxy tab have a newton ring problem and a main "causer" of this is heat.
this is a series problem for me because i live in kuwait and it is 40+C and getting 40*C is lucky
and people say the screen crack very easy on low drops
i am thinking of asus transformer pad
what should i get
if your answer is the galaxy tab 10.1 because it is thin then save it for yourself
Hello, so far the samsung galaxy is one of the best tablets on the market. But the newton ring is a real pita. I suggest you to wait and see what will happen in the next weeks. I think they'll try to address this issue as soon as they can.

Ok what is Newton Ring in layman's term? Read it in wiki and all I understood is there's some light interference between two surfaces, etc

I'm in Texas.... Now it's about 105 every day and i'm using my tab by the pool everyday for like 1 hour. i have the tab since like 4 weeks or something like that and it works perfectly. no issues because of the heat.
dude,
don't hurry to get the tab. apart from the newton's rings prob, right now they are in deep **** especially ''after the australia's ruling'', and in the following days/weeks, the tab might even get banned in other countries. i guess Sammy might even stop production , and get another model out fast.(they have done it with p7100 so this wont come as a surprise).

thanks guys for all the comments.
but even if there wasn't a newton ring problem ... i am still having second thoughts whether i should buy the transformer or the galaxy tab
i dont think i care about the thin stuff
The main reason I bought the galaxy tab was because of how thin and light it is. Also I wouldn't be using hdmi out so the lack of a built in adapter didn't matter to me. If you do plan on using hdmi out, keep in mind that in order to use it on the galaxy tab, you would have to to buy an extra adapter and with the transformer, you would not. Same goes for OTG USB devices; you would need an adapter for the galaxy tab. But it really is amazing how much lighter and thinner this tablet is compared to any other tablet... I've owned the xoom and it was like carrying around a brick; the transformer is only 50 grams lighter than the xoom whereas the galaxy tab is over 100 grams lighter than the transformer. I've had great experiences with both Asus and Samsung hardware but in the end, I chose Samsung due to the much smaller form factor. If you do decide to buy the galaxy tab, you will be buying from a newer batch of them which seem to not suffer from the Newtonian rings problem.

The never-ending battle.
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 - 10:21 am - Android, General, Transformer
Been a while since last post, but it appears ASUS’s counter move have finally come.
All signs point to that with the B70 revision of the Transformer, they have changed the Secure Boot Key.
At the same time they appear to have disabled downgrades in the more recent revisions of the firmware (the one B70 comes with!)
This means: At this point it’s not possible to root B70 revision ASUS Transformers. We will of course see what we can do to find a way around it, but keep in mind neither of us have access to a B70 revision model nor do we intend to spend the money needed to get one.
It was a good run, and congrats to all those with pre-B70 revision devices and bummer for everyone who bought newer revision devices hoping to root
Thanks,

I'm waiting on my GT10.1 right now while I am at work and it is out for delivery.
I was in the same boat trying to decide between this and the TF. Ultimately I decided on the GT because of how it felt in my hand. Its not about thin, but it is related. When I held the TF, it felt great in landscape. Lots of bezel for my thumbs to grip but not obscure the screen and the back felt amazing. But the instant I turned the TF to portrait, it just felt bulky and awkward. Nowhere to put my thumbs and the curved back isn't as graceful in that orientation. Just felt fat to me. I sorta like the idea of an sdcard and hdmi, but with enough memory I probably won't use it. My phone has 16G built in and another 16G card, but I never put anything on the card.
Once I had basically decided, i did some digging and I'm actually really excited about the TouchWiz update. Personally I think it will make it more attractive (I don't like the Tron look of stock) and adds features. Basically once you stop going back and forth there will be a lot to love about whichever tablet you choose.
These are the two I am deciding on and hope to buy one a little later today. I have a samsung phone. Great device. People complain about the slowness of samsung updates. Turns out it doesn't really matter if you root and rom, so I quit worrying about that. My concern is that lack of micro-sdcard slot. On the one hand, I think 16gb is enough and perhaps this is the future, what with streaming and all. On the other hand, it would be nice to have those ports (with a usb adapter to carry around.
Then, just to confuse me further, my brother's Acer 500 is pretty nice too and has usb and micro-sdcard.
So, are people missing the sdcard slot and usb? the thin and light Samsung is in the lead atm

at first I thought I would miss the microSD slot but you could buy their 30 pin to USB for 19.99 at BB or go for the 30 pin/USB & 30pin/SD connector from expansys.
http://www.expansys-usa.com/samsung...-10-1-30-pin-to-usb-30-pin-to-sd-slot-219891/
I bought the 19.99 usb connector & http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HGFKR8 from Amazon for less than $9.99.
My USB connector does help not having on-board microSD slot
Plus with the Seagate WIFI GoFlex Satellites that are coming out. You can wifi stream.

How sure are we on this?? any idea of batch numbers or something which seem to have these issues fixed?
Bought mid June at Best Buy , and have the newtonrings
Hi, I life in Begium and was lucky to buy a SGT 10.1 in pre-order at Best Buy during our vacation in the US , mid June.
Unfortunely I've noticed last week also the "newton rings" , kind of "oil" in the middle under the touchscreen
I have take contact with Samsung Belgium by phone ... they never heard about that (maybe because the tab 10.1 is still NOT official released in our country)
I have send a email, but still waiting for an answer.
It happens only when the tablet is getting "hot" ... sometimes when sitting outdoor into the sun, about 25 degrees Celsius ... so that's not so hot
Made contact again with Samsung Belgium, finally they accepted the touchscreen problem.
They gave me a adress in Holland, a repair center.
Device send to Holland, posting on my own costs.
So they exchange the screen and sended my device back home

Yes. I have a B6 model (in the serial number) and a friend has a B8 model.
The B6 does not have the SAMSUNG name on the bottom of the glass near the charge port. The B8 (newer model) does.
Apparently, the newer batches have the SAMSUNG name on them. That being said, I don't have any Newton's rings on my B6 32GB model.

Where did you bought your P900\901\905? And where was it maded in?

Maybe it's on your manual or something, but in some countries it is not necessary to tell the costumer where the device was made in.
You can also try the app phone info samsung.
I just find the samsung devices made in Korea has even a better quality than apple devices.
usually made in Korea > made in China > made in Vietnam, but Samsung (or exactly the Samsung's factories) usually decide to sell worse devices made in China to Chinese, because China's law on protection of consumer is a joke
I boughted my SM-P900 off Amazon (usa), and it was apparently maded "in Vietnam by Samsung."
I've been quite happy with it, no issues. It feels solid and sturdy, although, I tend to baby new electronics for the first year or so. I got one of the Samsung book cover cases and a zagat screen protector (which is awesome, btw), and put both on immediatly after taking it out of the box.
So far, this tab appears to be much more solid and well built than my old asus TF700T, that's for sure. I still want one of those dual booting asus trio whatever. Google made asus scrap the duet, but they just came out with a better, more expensive dual boot convertible and called it a "trio."

On a sticker on the box. Or possibly by looking up some sort of serial or batch number and comparing it to some list that may or may not exist somewhere. If you're dying to know, you coukd call Samsung, I'm sure they could tell you. Most likely it's either China or Vietnam. I doubt it was made many other places.

Still not as ugly as the bezel on the Galaxy s5. It's hideous. If you get an s5, you better have a case to immediately throw that sucker in.
P905 LTE Black, Bought in Germany (Media Markt Nordhorn), no information on country of production.
Almost no device in the EU has that information on it. I spend 6 hours looking for it regarding my Note 3. No luck.
Quality is excellent, as I'm used to from EU devices.
What we established a few years ago is that legal quality demands in the EU are MUCH higher than in the US. A fact I've run into more and more often with newer devices. US devices had issues with creaking cases, loose screens, extreme light bleed, colour issues, loose buttons.. For the TF700T the entire US batch had these issues, including a quickly-breaking hinge, whereas the EU ones did not. Part of it is the legal laws, as our quality certifications are MUCH higher, and another part is our return policy. Where US shops easily accept a device that was used for 2 weeks back when the user 'dislikes it'. For us in the EU, the only way to do that after opening the box is if there's a factory defect. Used = No Return.
SM-P905 LTE. Purhased online from Negri Electronics. Fed Ex paperwork says Made in Korea.

Bought my P900 from Trendy Computers (Netherlands) for € 608,00. Works fine, no creaking case, almost no screenbleeding, I am a happy owner. Can't find any information about about where it is made.
made in Brazil
Mine is from Brazil made in the Samsung factory in Manaus the first one I got hat the silver part damaged near the power button the metal was gonna an u could see the plastic inside revealing that the metal isn't metal just a thing covering the plastic inside
So I changed worried that over time the silver plater could go loosing more and more of the silver finish the second one has the finish perfect but at first use the vibration sound was weird the stopped not sure why it seems xda has relates about similar issues in other people's tablets too it was like if my vibration was more strong Than most... really loud ...
As it has stopped I kept the device change things in Brazil is not easy even when broken they don't want give u a new but fix the broken I think mine warms a bit near bellow the camera location on normal use web browsing etc it gets 33 Celsius 90 f
What is the temp of yours ?
I bought my Black P905 in Germany (Base/Provider), yesterday i root my Device.. Yeeaahh
Bought in USA made in Vietnam.
Quality seems fine, kinda hard to judge with such a large plastic device, but no noise or uneven seems.
While at Best Buy i noticed that the display model flexed when picked up from a corner, after mentioning this to the Best Buy associate standing next to me, he took the tablet and proceeded to bend it, quite forcefully. The tablet bent what appeared to be between 3/8 and 1/2 in. across its width, with no damage, i was pretty impressed. Thats not to say I am going to show this feature off to friends but its nice to know it won't fall apart if treated a little rough.
