system notifications

I see my system notifications are stored in /system/media/notifications but even with root Im not able to drop a new file withing this directory. I would like to do this because Handcent doesnt give me the option to select a different directory.
Any suggestions on either dropping a new sound file in the /system/media dir or using a custom sound file for Handcent?

You should be able to put something in /sdcard/media/notifications

You have to mount system with root explorer, ADB, etc. It's read only by default.

If you use root explorer, there is a little button in the upper right that toggles read write permissions.

Sweet
For the next person, I can confirm this does work, you just need to make sure the permissions are correctly set on each file and the phone (or SMS) app needs to be restarted to take effect.

I have to do all editing from my phone, no laptop anymore. Any suggestions on a great app to edit system files, and something to repackage apks?

but ES explorer say it cannot do it. I chose properties and see that the file is read only.

Are you rooted? If not, you cannot do it, because you need root access to do changes in /system directory. If, you can do it with e.g. one of the following apps:
Root explorer (paid)
Super Manager (free)
File Expert (free)
After starting, you need to mount (switch) r/w. Additionally, in both free apps, you need to enable root option in their settings before. Now can you can overwrite.

in file expert, when i go into options - mount - and choose "read and write" should I be already positioned browsing the "system" folder ??
I've done this way, but I suspect that "mount read and write" is a global option referring to system folders and can be enabled just when entering File expert ?

Only System files have to be Mounted as Read/Write to Edit them, other than that they can't be Modified!

I don't like to say it, but pressing thanks-button would be awesome!
You can also mount r/w while in root folder, does not matter. After closing file expert, you always have to enable root explorer function and mounting r/w again, when you start file expert the next time. At least i cannot find an option to enable it permantly. Which is understandable for me, because superuser rights can damage your phone (so this enable action works metaphorically as a little warning, imho).

Hi, I have a rooted an android tablet (Chuwi Hi12) and find the lowest brightness way too bright. Now I found the settings of brightness and want to lower the settings but the system won't save the file with the new settings. What am I doing wrong? Please help. Many thanks.

root browser is the best one!:

I have question. With any root Explorer I can't overwrite ANY file on ANY app. Always pop up something like "can't overwrite" I'm rooted with Magisk, Pocophone F1 MIUI 10.3 by xiaomi.eu 9.1.17 (dev.)

Hide / Rename Apps from App Drawer?

Hi Guys,
There are certain apps that I would like to hide from the App Drawer in my Tab since my friends are literally all over the tab and snooping around in my messages or photos or even password protection apps. Could you tell me of any possibility of Hiding apps from the App drawer or probably RENAMING them to a less catchy title?

There's only two ways of doing this.....
1. Route your phone and then using a Root Explorer rename the App.
2. Use an alternative Home App.
If you use Launcher Pro one of the options it has is to hide Apps from the App Drawer.
You would have to go back through the menu to un-hide them but it might work for you.

Thanks for the reply. Now, i have rooted my tab and currently on Roto JMI v2. I have installed root explorer. Could you please guide me how to change the name from within ROOT EXPLORER. I mean, the directory / path of the apps? I tried myself but no luck

You should be able to simply mount the system/app folder and rename the App in question.
Can you confirm you have done a reboot.
If so Root Explorer should work as normal.

I have done a reboot, and can see various files in the root explorer along with the option to mount. But I am unable to see the apps that I have installed from the market. For example : Catch Notes is one app I installed but can't locate it in root explorer so that I can rename or modify it.

Sorry but if the App is not showing in a search you must have a problem with your rooting or the file manager.
Installed Apps would show in System/App

Easy work around if they aren't super tech savvy. Get launcherpro and hide the apps in question

Not sure if this has been covered already on the 7.7 forum, but it's a very useful guide.
This makes Titanium backup and other apps able to write to the external SD card.

I've found a simple solution for gaining write access to the external sdcard (/mnt/sdcard2) on Android 3.2. The sdcard is mounted r/w, but the owning group is media_rw which is linked to the WRITE_MEDIA_STORAGE permission. Unfortunately, this permission was not required for access to the external sdcard prior to 3.2 so most file management utilities do not request it when they run...meaning they only have read access to the card.
The simple solution, if you're rooted, is as follows:
1. Using a root-enabled file manager, navigate to /system/etc/permissions and make sure you have mounted the file system r/w.
2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add an additional group definition for this permission...<group gid="media_rw" />
4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Restart your tablet.
After this change, any apps that request the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission (which includes almost anything that access either of the sdcards) will gain group membership in both sdcard_rw AND media_rw, giving them r/w access to both sdcard filesystems.

Used root explorer in rw mode, copy & paste to
/etc/permissions/platform.xml
If you're using vauxhallastra's, don't forget to unzip it first.

This can be done for instance with Titanium Backup. Tested and works.

what app2sd apps that you used? i tried few..but seems not to work either

Some people said that it is possible to move apps to sd card with Titanium Backup.
But when you looked afterwards at the size of your SD card nothing changed.

Hi. I know this may sound stupid but what constitutes a 'root enabled file' manager? I've used the file manager that the 7.7 comes with, Astro, and ES explorer and I can't seem to find /sysem/etc/permissions.
What am I doing wrong?

The default file manager won't let you browse root, and I've never used Astro, but ES definitely does. You have to check "Root Explorer" (and if you want to make any changes, "Mount File System" as writable) in the options. I also recommend checking "Up to Root" option so you can just use the Up button or Back softkey to go from /sdcard to / (root directory), but in any case the favorites button will give you quick access to the root directory from anywhere.

root enabled file managers will allow you to browse and edit the system config files which we are doing here. the fact that you cant find /system/etc/permission might be because they are file managers. perhaps the paid version of those apps will allow you root access.

Next question:
Once I copy and paste this bit of code into platform. Xls, how do I ensure that its'saved. I see no option for that and pressing the 'back' button doesn't do the trick.
I also tried to use the link given. This was extracted using my astro file manager. What do I do with this document then? Should i copy and paste it in /systems/etc/permissions/ ?

Figured it out. Thanks much.
In using ES explorer, you have to go to PREFERENCES first. Therein tick r/w and root. This will enable you to write on the system files.
I found that the Root explorer app didn't help me cause I couldn't save my copied and pasted amendment. Whereas it was easy to do with ES explorer. Hope this last bit helps anyone who needed spoon feeding like me.

is there any way to divert the folder \sdcard\Android\data to \sdcard\extStorages\sdcard\Android\data ... this will save me atleast 9GB in my internal memory and will put my sdcard in full use

First, you have to be rooted. Second, you need a root file manager installed such as Root Explorer (paid app worth every penny) or ES File Explorer (free, but I never used it) and there are others. Navigate to the system file you want to change permissions on, allow read/write access, long-press the file, choose permissions. rwx, means to put checkmarks in read, write, execute for Owner, and check Read for Group and Others.
