i found an apk that works on honeycomb. then today i noticed about 12 pct drop in battery while in standby for maybe 5 hours with wifi turned off. checked battery graph and it had been kept awake the whole time. looks like gv had been the culprit. anyone have an apk that actually works well?

Google talk actually comes with your tablet. Voice and video work great for me.
Actually, Google Voice is not the same as Google Talk. Google Voice gives you an actual phone number that people can text and call, and Google will forward those texts and calls to your cell phone.
I would be very interested in getting this google voice app...
Isn't Google Voice in the market? I have it, and I could swear that's where I got it, unless I copied it from my phone...

It doesn't show up in the market in HC. Just sideload it and it works fine. As for battery drain, I haven't noticed any.

GV is one of the hidden apps on Stock rom - I'm going to guess due to Acer and/or Google being in bed with with the various carriers - why would anyone buy an A501 when they can get wifi calling with a real phone number using GV on a cheaper A500?
Sad but what can you do short of going to a custom rom?

I know there are threads on tasker, but i have to say, this is one sick app.
all you have to do is send sms with secret word from any phone and Tasker will enable wifi, gps, and send back a link to google maps with phone location.
That is amazing, but...
Pity the GPS, Compass and Google Maps implementation is completely ****ing broken!
I would definitely love to use this when (or if) the locational services ever do function. Thanks for the heads up -- I had no idea this existed.
There are multiple apps like "Where's my droid" that do this as well.

you can find it here: http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index
the guy is using GPS only, but its pretty straight forward to include WIFI in this as well (WIFI is for better location without GPS). The time to wait for GPS to get a lock is up to you, I have 1 min.
and as you can see there is a profile there if you wish to lock you phone with SMS and/or play sound. (havent tried that)
For now I have these tasks: 1. If power ON, screen timeout is set to 45 sec (from 15), and lockguard is disabled 2. from 7:30pm to 8am screen brightness set to min and to AUTO other times. 3 Created a widget for "Vibrate" and "Bluetooth" since Vibrant is missing easy access to those functions (in a nice menu widget to save space). 4. I have several tasks killed at boot since they are useless anyway. (for this need to insert WAIT command with whatever time needed since some tasks start after the phone boots)
Thanks a lot for that link! Was able to create my own widget too now!

Pretty much a lost cause at this point. Next time, if there is a next time, you may want to look into apps like the above mentioned or Where's My Droid, which may help since they allow you to locate the phone using the GPS.

None of the apps mentioned before will do you any good if you have GPS turned off. Tasker can remotely turn on GPS, locate your phone and send you the location by simply texting a key phrase.

You can just download Tasker profiles from the Tasker wiki site, not that hard. I have tested this a few times and you don't need a sky view for this to work.
Hey guys,
I opened this thread to see how people is using Google Now nowadays. I found myself excited about the launch of it, but now I found it pretty boring and useless. First, I sometimes use it for weather, the other functions are not really working. Everyday I'm going to my workplace, at the same hour, working in the office between 9 am - 2pm and 5 pm - 8 pm. I have the location history enabled, the house address and workplace address both added, I see the statistics in my dashboard and my current location in latitude (no check-ins however), but Google never advised me that I need to leave from home to be in-time at work or reverse. The only things I got was some live scores and some random mistakenly notifications like "78 minutes to home", while I was only like 200 meters away.... Also, I found that if I search my job address in Google Maps, the location is correctly shown, but in dashboard, I'm getting that briefcase (workplace icon) wrong positioned with around 80-100 meters. Otherwise, Google Now is answering to all my questions and working pretty good, but I don't find it really smart...
Google Now works well. It is just that Google Maps have a long way to go. Many routes it shows are not the fastest, etc.
Like you i was pretty excited about the whole thing, the problem is that the tradeoff in battery life simply isn't worth it for me.

absolutly agree with you..
i noticed that when i'm with wifi enabled, if i look at battery usage, wifi is always connected even in standby (with wifi disable option active)
double checked and if Gnow is disabled wif act as it was supposed..
It would be great if there was some way to change the location poll frequency to maybe every 15 minutes or whatever, rather than the default.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I see no huge changes in battery life since I activated the location and search history in my phone just for Google Now. The problem is that the check-ins are not regular, I'm getting bad locations sometimes, so Google Now can't give me information about when I need to leave home because of traffic or so.... Nothing. Got one notification in a whole month and that one was wrong as I said in my first message. No idea what I need to do instead. Check in at work at the same hour daily? Why the pin sometimes is flying like 500 meters away from my location (that's what I see in dashboard) while the google maps app is showing my location with 16m accuracy even if I'm in a building?

He means that the Google is checking your location randomly instead to checking it every 15 minutes or so.
The big question is....how to make Google Now know that I'm starting the work at 9 am, so I will get those cards saying "30 minutes to work" or something like that. Google knows that I'm working as I'm getting those fancy graphics in the Dashboard (https://maps.google.com/locationhistory/b/0/dashboard) saying that I'm working X hours per week and Y hours I'm home, but the data is not accurate perfectly. I reset the data but same story now. Not sure if it's because my location sometimes jumps some kilometers away even if I have the wifi and gps enabled. Do I need to use Latitude and autocheckin or something like that to get accurate data ?

I need beta testers for this Rom/Mod. This Mod should be able to work on nearly any phone.
Google Voice Project Information:
Using VoIP and Google Voice text messaging, allowing free texting + calling over WiFi only. Because WiFi is everywhere now days. So why pay for a phone service, when you are able to obtain WiFi and have free texting + calling. This mod will disable your phone's radio cellular, increasing battery life, includes applications to text and call for free. This mod is for any phone without service, like something you would give your teenager, so they can call and text on without any costs to you. You must be rooted!!
What does this mod do?
Google Voice Application for Calling and texting implemented
Cellular Radio Disabled
Unneeded applications removed, like the old MMS texting app

The main direction this mod is just the very thing. Make sure you do have a Google Voice Account. You can get one free at http://google.com/voice Just be sure to load the Google Voice App, There is two applications, one is the modern texting app from the Play Store, and was is an integrated VoIP app, it's from another project from Sipdroid, I am going to update the version of it as well, but after you have your google account setup with your phone, you can simply open the app and click Register PBX Account for your Google Voice, and a registry box will appear for you to setup another account. It's really simple. I hope to make a video for it later on. Also I will also include a boot animation for the phone.
Great idea! I'm definitely trying this on my old HTC Hero. Is it a complete ROM or a patch for a ROM ? Because the zip is kinda small...4mb only.

The first app is the text messaging app, created by Google developers, and is already out on the market, at no cost.
The second app is a developer made app from a open source code for Sipdroid, I have modified the application and modified it to integrate it with the mod. So it's under Google Voice as a name.
I went ahead and made adjustments to the mod, it is now once again been reupdated, so if you used it already, just reload the back and do it again. I'm also going to make a uninstaller for this.

So is the text messaging app the Google Voice app then?
Here is something to think about - and it's actually kinda a big deal to me.
One of the STUUUPID things that verizon has done to us is to strip the VOIP settings out of the native dailer. If you use any of the 3rd party ROMS (well - any of the 3rd party ROMS that are not BLUR based) - you get that feature back in the native dailer. So what would be better would be to not install the sipdroid client at all and just use the native dailer to do all this.
Believe it or not that is one of my two HUGE complaints about this phone. If you want the VOIP in the native dailer - you loose HDMI because no 3rd party ROMS support it.
Now, interestingly, my HUGE 2nd complaint is that the lapdocks totally suck and I've never had any success with any of my lapdocks/bionics getting them to actually work. Even doing a factory reset..etc etc etc - the freakn lapdocks just dont freakn work.
I guess at this point (or pretty soon anyway) I'm not going to care because when my sucky verizon contract is up in a couple of months I'm switching carriers to Sprint and getting a Galaxy Note 2. I would get it on verizon - but the stuuuupid verizon folks have locked the bootloader on it and the stuuuupid verizon doesn't have unlimited bandwith and Sprint does.
My experience with VZ has been horrific. My HDMI didn't work so they sent me a 2nd phone. I sent the first one back but they claim they never got it and charged me $600 bucks for it. To top that off the 2nd phone's HDMI doesn't work either - and the friends phone that DOES have a working HDMI still wont work with the lapdock..etc etc etc.
Basiaclly they've screwed me out of about 700 bucks and I still don't have a working unit.
Ill be ur test subject

Sounds reasonable but I do have CIQ enable from day one w/o any issue.
It just happens in the last couple of days. Maybe 2014 isn't the year for me?
Maybe GSam Battery Monitor can help pinpoint which app is causing the GPS wakes. Or Wakelock Detector.
I also have been noticing the location icon popping up on my status bar every now and then. I cant find what app is triggering it. I dont see cIQ in my application manager to disable it...

Running Applications > Android System > IQ Agent Service. Hit stop there and then hit stop for Android System. You'll have to do that at each boot unless you're rooted. If you're rooted, you can use System Tuner.
Here's my shots.
This is probably directly related to the issue or NOT.
Clearly, Location Manager Service goes crazy.
What it is is yet to figure out.
At one point, I saw Google Messaging Service kicked on so I turned off Hangouts SMS feature and along with a reboot, my battery is now better but the "searching for GPS " still pops up.

Could try Greenify. I use it. It hibernates apps so they won't run until you tell them to
