Hello, I want to buy an XDA to replace my PDA & Mobile. My wife and I currently on vodafone ( joint plan, 200 free mins / pm ) until 14th April so considering either buying used and running the software you've constructed to enable it on vodafone, or buying new from 02 or going with a 2nd hand XDA to another network.
No real need to change her 'phone and have seen 2nd hand XDAs on e-bay at c. £140 - £180 which compares favorably with the purchase price new on a new contract with O2.
However, for UK only use, is one provider better than any others?
We live in the Beds / Cambs / Northants area so should be reasonably covered by all. Only Orange used to have a few flat spots around here.
Many thanks yr comments.

Charles
is one uk network better than another
Hi there, does anyone have an opinion as to which network is better than another ref calls and gprs, or are they all about the same?
We spend most of our time around the midlands london areas
Many thanks
Charles
Having left Orange to get an XDA2 with O2, I can only say that I've been disappointed. O2's customer service isn't a patch on Orange's, and the coverage is generally slightly worse (although this could be an XDA problem).
I wouldn't recommend O2 to anyone, but will move to Orange as soon as I can, once I can be sure I can get GPRS etc. working. I've never used T-Mobile or Vodafone.
Hope this helps.
Many thanks yr candid comments. As I'm currently with vodafone, I feel my 1st steps will be to buy an unlocked new /2nd hand xda to run on this n'work and see how it shapes up.
Yr comments appear to mirror others I've noted ref O2 cst svs being poor.
Thanks again.

hi , i wanna buy a HTC Universal , so
will i buy O2 XDA Exec SIM unlocked or i-mate JASJAR ????
please help
Really makes no difference as its identical hardware.
The differences are purely cosmetic, however you do have the choice to switch ROMs so, like me at present, you could run an I-Mate ROM on an O2 Exec or vice versa or any other combinations.
Can anyone confirm that loading another Reseller's ROM on a branded device invalidates warranties as I know this has been hinted at before.
Thanks

This is true. A provider will generally only accept a device for repair if it is using one of their supported ROMs, so if you get into problems, you will need to reflash back to a provider supplied ROM
the exec looks good in black.....but the damn problem is in keeping it nice and shining!
The black color attracts a lot of dirt, finger prints & grime! Half the time you'd end up wiping and shining it!
You might be better of with a jasjar ;-)
my 2 cents!
S
There are people on eBay selling silicone "condoms" for the Exec and they are pretty good. I bought mine and it was delivered in a week or so. The only problem with it is that I need to remove it in order to use my car cradle
Buy the Exec if it is from O2 UK as they have a good warranty scheme (2 years warranty). I have owned both the JJ and Exec and I prefer the screen of the Exec, even though people say they are the same!
basically the exec just looks the coolest. A few friends of mine cancelled blackberry orders when they saw the o2 exec. Also it depends if you want a data tariff with the device or not. If you do, I think o2 has the best data tariff scheme at the moment as:
1. You can buy data only if you don't want voice.
2. Data tariff amounts give the same discount as equivalent cost voice tariffs.
3. Volume of data tariff is good, (+VAT) £14.5 for 35mg, £18 for 75, £25 for 2000 and £45 for 1G.
The best 3g coverage in the UK is, as usual, vodafone .......
thaks for all your relyes , and after reading this i'll buy an O2 Exec
and thanx
Hang On...
I went for the Exec two months ago for all the reasons above (inc the 75Mb data only plan) but you might be better advised to wait a couple of weeks and go for the T Mobile MDA Pro.
There are rumours on Modaco that T Mobile is going to release an unlimited data plan for £7.50 a month!
Apparently T Mobile will unlock the MDA for £15.

On a slightly diff note here.. just wanted to tell u guys.. here in India AIRTEL offers an unlimited data plan for Rs.200/month only which is approx US$4.55/month only. with EDGE speeds

Hi there,
I have been evaluating the HTC TyTN and I think I'm ready to purchase one. However, they're not available in Australia AT ALL!
I have been looking around and Expansys in the UK seems to have it the cheapest approx (GBP400 + Shipping). Plus, I like the HTC form factor better than the others.
however...I heard some real scare stories about something to do with them possibly not working in 3G mode on the Optus network here in Australia. I can only imagine that this MAY have something to do with the radio ROM - am I right?
I checked the WIKI (see, I did my homework before posting) and there is only ONE where they can't work out the location yet - I am assuming that the is the ROM for Australia - would I be right?
I guess the question I am asking is - am I in for a problem if I purchase one of these in the UK (or other place depending on your recommendations here in this post)??? I really want this phone so I can roam in Japan (3G) and have WIFI to use with Skype and also have push calendaring.
All help appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
It's so crap that they aren't available in Australia. And I live in Perth, the most isolated city in the world! Pfft. I managed to get my hands on a TyTN from eBay though (where I get most of my obscure stuff .. well, obscure in Australia), and I'm on the Three network and it works awesomely. even the video calling is great.
~Louis x_.
I can confirm that the 3G works on Optus as the device I purchased for review worked on the optus network. 3G calls were fine just as they were on the jasjar and the 3g speed was pretty much the same as on the jasjar.
Additionally it may be worth mentioning if you can hold out for a month and if you dont mind paying $1300 (thats a guess but its looking like that will be the price) then the imate-jasjam is set to be released in Aus late september.
hey guys.. i m using my Dopod CHT 9000 with i-mate WWE Jasjam rom in New Zealand with Vodafone. everything is fine with 3g, video calling and 3g data connection. However one thing that is MMS. It is not working in anyway in NZ of MMS. Even i bring up the phone to vodafone NZ , no one can do with it. Hope these info help a bit as NZ and AUS were quite similar in some terms. Cheers

It should work on Optus 3G no problem, mate. The problem will be getting Expansys UK sell you one if they find out you're from Oz.
Also, have you checked the US/Canada options? The devices work out cheaper with the exchange rate, and the shipping is normally faster.
There are a couple of US and Canadian sellers on eBay and also on Howard Forums. Check them out.

Tytn will be available in australia in a couple of weeks. It will be launched by Dopod International and will be called Dopod 838 Pro.
^^ Dopod never have and are not intending to release this device in Australia. Dopod specialises in the asian markets, and at this stage dopod doesnt even have their act together enough to sell the device in Hong Kong where they actually have dopod outlets.
The imate-jasjam will be available in Australia at some stage, however from all accounts for in the short-term (1-3 months) it appears Telstra will have exclusive rights to this device and only they will sell it.
So yes 3G works fine
your options are import a TyTN variant from the internet or alternatively you can pay $1450 and order a jasjam through expansys NZ right now, or wait and see how much telstra charges for these.
on a side note, what good data plans do they have in Aus,
I'm loving paying 3 pound 75 for unlimited in UK ( web n walk friends and relations ) ( less than 10 bucks aus ) but not looking forwards getting back to aus and having stupidly expensive data again....
Email I received from Dopod International (ANZ) at the begining of the week.
Dear XXXX
Thank you for your interest in our company and products.
Dopod plan to launch our company and release the “838 Pro” in the next 2 weeks to the market. At this stage I suggest you contact XXXX @ XXXX.com.au)for an invite to our launch event at Opera house.
Dopod in Aust. on Optus
I have been running a Dopod 838 Pro in Australia on the Optus 3G network for over two weeks.
Dopod have an office in Australia and are releasing their product in Australia, through all of the normal channels.
Works great and is a good solid device.
Greetings to you all.
THis is my first post here, and I would appreciate any help.
I am considering buying an HTC touch HD from eBay. I found that the cheapest ones are those listed in eBay.co.uk, and locked to Orange UK. However, the price difference compared to the phones which are factory unlocked made me think whether there is something wrong with the Orange UK phones.
To be specific, I have two questions:
1- Do Orange UK HTC-HD phones have different specs compared to other HTC-HD phones?
2- Are Orange UK HTC-HD phones guaranteed to be unlockable? If yes, could they be re-locked again after a ROM upgrade? will they work (after unlocking) on all GSM networks worldwide?
Again, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance.
To Orange or not to Orange!

1- I believe the Orange hardware specs are exactly the same. It's just the ROM/software that they play with.
2- Every phone should be SIM unlockable. I have seen many reports in this forum that they can be. You can easily replace an Orangised ROM with a cooked one or WWE stock ROM to remove any unwanted Orange stuff.... all you'll be left with is the little orange logo on the back. There is no need to SIM unlock the phone to upgrade the ROM. Check out the HSPL / USPL threads to see what must be done and how easy it is to ROM upgrade.
I have an Orange HD (still locked) running the non Orange HK 1.19 ROM
I have a Orange handset, i use orange so im not bothered about simunlock, ive removed the orange software and put Duttys 1.7 on at moment.
i believe there are a few vendors that can provide guaranteed (or your money back) unlock codes for around 18euros
I've had an Orange Touch HD for almost two weeks now and it seems fine. I flashed it with Duttys ROM and that improved things like RAM usage and stuff, but added its own little annoyances.
Go with the Orange, you wont regret it!!
I have an orange sim locked one... but as I am an orange customer I am happy.
Dutty's v1.7 rom is the current flavour.
Thank you all for your quick response. this will definitely help me out ...
One last question before I actually make a bid: Has anyone unlocked his/her Orange Touch-HD phone and used it on a different network outside UK?
Bought a HD ORANGE (UK) on ebay, unlocked it with code (htccode) and now im usin it in slovenia
Thank you so much
I will start bidding.. will let you know if anything went wrong!
I bought an Orange one from eBay a few weeks ago. Got it for £370 with a Best Offer. I had previously won another one which was described as 'brand new in box' but had a scratched screen and obvious signs of use!
Make sure you get what you payed for!! I had to do a PayPal dispute as this person was adamant they hadn't used it... despite the pouch being fluffy, the earphones having the furry covers on, and various scratches! Needless to say, they had it back on eBay as BNIB the next day again!
Anyway - my second one arrived still with the original screen warning protector, and I got a best offer on the unlock code on eBay for £14. The code came through within a few hours, and I typed it in twice and it worked perfectly. I then updated the ROM to Dutty's - as the Orange one was a bit naff - and stuck in my O2 SIM card! As with Dutty's ROMs on my old Diamond, it instantly knew it was an O2 SIM I'd put in, and asked me if I wanted to install the settings - which I did. A simple soft reset and my WAP / MMS settings etc were all sorted!
Orange phones are definately the cheapest, as people are taking them as a free upgrade and selling them on - because they're probably the phone thats worth the most at the moment!! The only downer is the naff Orange logo on the back cover which won't come off no matter what I scrubb it with! Their old ones wiped clean with some label remover or paint stripper
Can someone please take a picture of the Orange logo on the back? How big and gawdy is it?
i dont really like the orange logo on this one either, since the back cover is the same microsatin finish as the touch dual i had, its not gonna be possible to remove it.
its not very big, but a sudden orange square kind of spoils the "blackness" of the device.
im assuming there is no free unlock solution yet....
anyone know the cheapest place to get it unlocked? if its on ebay, could you give a link to the seller? im a bit cautious cos i've had some dodgy ones in the past thanks!
Orange HD Upgrade
I got my HD free as an Orange upgrade through mobiles.co.uk this week. Was very happy to find that Orange had not been let near this phone. Haven't even got the silly logo on the back and it's unlocked. I think they get them direct from HTC.

It's 1cm square or 1 square cm!
Damn....looks like I'll be looking for an un-branded phone then....
cant u just buy a new back cover off ebay and get rid of the logo that way?
My orange logo is less than 7mm squared!
I bought a replacement battery cover from eBay about a week ago, and it just arrived the other day. It was an 'original htc HD cover' from Hong Kong for £15.
It certainly looks original, and all the stuff inside is the same - but its missing the volume buttons, the power button, and the speaker grill bit. It also comes with the camera cover as a seperate bit you need to glue on!
A waste of £15 if you ask me - unless I can send it back to Hong Kong (which will probably cost me heaps anyway!!)
I got a fairly good deal with mine on Orange (£20 /month 500min, 100txt 3 magic numbers and phone for £95) so i dont see anything wrong with buying from orange. The phone works fine and specs are the same.
I have a Orange HTC HD as well...not anymore, new ROM(original HTC) and new HTC battery cover from expansys.com. Works fine...I'm on O2, I hate Orange very much gf using orange, poor customer service and poor reception, I give them a F with a - as a Mobile Network Provider.
My baby HD works and looks great after I got it back to the original HTC look thanks to the guys at xda-developers.com
See pic of Orange logo on the back of the phone, you also get a I must admit nice Orange splash screen which I removed when installed my new original HTC ROM678
Thanks for the photo. I'd rather do without the orange logo if I had a choice.
I'm currently looking for one, but all the UK sellers require a verified UK paypal address, which I don't have. I have a UK Aramex address, but of course it's not verified since I'm abroad.
Just buy the battery cover HTC original after you buy your phone. I think I payed for mine £23. Looksa good, from HTC or expansys.com.
GL!!
I am planning on getting a Streak as a replacement for my HD2
I will be using an o2 sim card with the Streak. Would you recommend buying it from o2 or Dell? Are there any differences between the devices?
o2. it will save you £20. £449 from dell, £429 from cpw locked to o2. plus you can walk into a cpw and get it on the day

The only difference is from o2 it has a bit of o2 software on it and its locked to o2. From dell its unbranded and unlocked and they are both the same price but dell has added £20 delivery on to there total. I would recommend getting one from dell you don't know in 6 months you may not be on o2 and you would have a phone locked to them where as for a extra £20 you can have any Sim card
Thanks for the replies
Dell are doing 10% discount on the Streak through EPP - So that means I can get it for £409.08 including delivery.
Will we be able to upgrade the device with Dell's firmware, or would you have to wait for o2 to release their version of the firmware?

Dell said at the launch that it will defiantly get 2.2 so cannot see them going back on that just wonder why they did not build it with 2.1 on board strange

Hi Regtee2 - Can I ask how do you get this 10% EPP? Have googled it and tried various things on the Dell website and the most I can achieve is 3% EPP off a dell desktop.. Have you actually gone through to the basket and got this 10%? Ta.
You can get it from O2 online for £399. Thats £50 saving over Dell UK.
http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/Dell/Streak_16GB_PayG
EDIT: Just to confirm I have ordered one and will be receiving it tomorrow total cost £399. I tried getting one from a O2 store but they wanted me to purchase a £10 top up aswell. I already have an O2 contract I want to use, didn't fancy spending a tenner to chuck in the bin.
I went into 3 O2 shops and tried to buy a Dell Streak on PAYG. Two of the shops wouldn't sell it to me on PAYG, just contract and the third said they can't sell it until the 24th July.
Think I'll go buy direct via Dell.
Hi all
Just a couple of points the only branding on the Streak from 02 is an 02 splash screen on boot up and some 02 themed wallpapers and that's it. Oh and the first bookmark and the page that the Browser opens up to is set up to be 02 but this is easily changed or can even be deleted if you want.
Also the update will be coming over the air direct from Dell not from 02 as their is no 02 branding on the device for them to need to approve it thankfully.

Streak from CPW
Hi all
I got a Streak from CPW believing it to be unlocked, but from CPW they are still locked to o2, thus my story begins.
Since it was locked I looked into ways of unlocking it or using an o2 PAYG sim with it, you cannot according to o2 use PAYG as the streak relies on their post pay settings, so I looked online and found the Rebel simcard option, and gave that some thought.
However in the meantime I visited the o2 store at Hempstead Valley, and at 1st there only option was for me to "put that one you have on ebay and buy a new one from us", I was not overly impressed with this, and after some cajoing the Sales assistant called o2 and they said they could not sell me the price plan (I want data only as I have a vodafone contract) without selling me a new streak. I went away, had a subway and returned to the store with a mission, get a data plan from o2, as they locked the handset, they could bloomingwell support it! after a few more phone calls they decided that they could do me a MBB plan with a dongle and just put the sim into the streak! success, all on 3g and works like a dream,
a message to o2 however, if you are gonna sell a device, no matter who it is bought via, you have to support it, not just tell people to bay the one they have and buy a new one in store!
