Reading comprehension is not a strong suit for many people, I understand that
Of course Gingerbread will come to Dell Streak 5.
You only need to be patient people!
Patience is a virtue. All good things will come to those who wait.
Someone will make it for the Dell Streak 5, whether it be days, weeks or months, it will happen.
Yeah, hopefully. A lot of Android phones have been / will be getting Gingerbread updates. Even the old Xperia X10, which came out in November 2009, just got a 2.3 update.

I am sorry but you are wrong. Dell is NOT putting out any more updates, including ROMS for the Dell Streak. You will not see Gingerbread.

Dell just put an update for softbank streaks yesterday. After that I'd expect another round of minor updates for various carriers.
At the risk of sounding like an idiot, what's a "softbank" Streak (I can't seem to locate a definition here)... Thanks

But was it just a minor update to Froyo 2.2.2?
Maybe Dell is just buying their time perfecting a totally new UI for Android 3.2 (like they did over top of 1.6 Doughnut)!
Seriously though... why did they spend so many resources putting lipstick on 1.6 (which was very cool / revolutionary / different) Such as the app drawer in the notification bar, power widget dropdown, etc.
I do like that the 2.2.2 releases of Froyo are AOSP enough that the UOT works without issue!
BTW: Softbank is a carrier (Japan?)
It was a minor update, but what it does say is that the team hasnt stopped working on the streak, they merely havnt been releasing any builds for whatever reasons. The update was built on june 30th and that was only a month ago. OTAs usually take about a month from building -> testing -> OTA
Whatever reason they are taking so long, if/when GB comes out it should be even closer to stock android then 2.2 just like 2.2 if you ignore stage ui.
Softbank is a cell carrier in japan, they sell locked US model streaks and were the first to semi-officially recieve 2.2. 301 was a softbank rom, but it wasnt officially released.
Not Exactly...

Except the captivate is getting gingerbread.
So, that means it is up to Dell to fight the giant at&t and get them to approve an update. To me this stance, among other things, communicates that Dell is halfheartedly interested in mobility. I mean, they brought in a mobility guy then canned him and shut down his division at the end of last year. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703688704575621101353557126.html Dell either doesn't want to work very hard or they are exiting because they don't think they can compete.
Contrast that with Sony Ericsson, and Samsung updating their 2010 models. (Ok, so SE isn't updating their at&t version, but this is XDA so we know that doesn't stop ambitious modders.) Those companies are showing commitment to the customers who signed TWO YEAR contracts and are stuck with LAST YEARS (2010) devices on Froyo for another year. These guys are differentiating in the place we wish every company did... Their customer service. Bravo!

Thanks Nick and TheManii for the info regarding Softbank...... Strangely, Softbank's website shows their cellular network as being W-CMDA.... so there must be a non-SIM version of the Streak.... either that or my Dolphin browser "translate" add-on doesn't translate Japanese too well LOL Thanks again all !!
They are probably focusing on the 10.1inch tablet coming out very soon. From what I gather it wont be a consumer device and probably not a streak.... but then again who knows they just released new stage software to sync and be a remote.
According to fards who speaks to ttmhe devs in irc he is convinced gb is coming offically.

WCDMA and UMTS are more or less synonymous (at least from a user standpoint, they might not be the exact same thing from a techical standpoint) with GSM 3G.
WCDMA is the 3g family (i think)
UMTS is the first 3g standard
HSPA is a faster revision (though revision isnt the best word to use)
HSPA+ is '3.5g' by the old definition and '4g' according to current american carriers.
WCMDA and CDMA are similar in how they transmit over the air, but completely different in application. WCDMA is a specific GSM technology, CDMA is the superfamily for CDMA devices.
To muddy the waters even more there are a couple of CDMA carriers in japan, but softbank is not one of them

I'm afraid hope is abandoning more people than myself. I mean, if Dell
finally gets GB to our Streaks, will it be before Ice Cream shows up?
Will Dell Streak customers really still be interested in a phone with
an OS that is one generation older than the present one?
I'm sure I won't...
Thanks for the clarification, Manll...... Also I do see the point in having the latest OS, but I also realize that a manufacturer will not provide upgrade paths for an aging product forever. At least with Froyo, I think we're at least on a sustainable platform that will remain relevent for some time to come... I just wish we had native video calling like Honeycomb. None of the 3rd party apps seem to work unless the recipient also has the same video call client installed.... and that's just not a realistic option for most...... Oh well, we can't have everything I suppose
so looks like we stuck to buy streak!!!! now i realize it was really bad choice to buy streak! wish i bought galaxy!!!!

As you probably know last Month that Samsung pulled-out the froyo Update files of the Samsung Galaxy S from its servers due to Many System Bugs that Made the Android froyo unstable and laggy. And Samsung UK confirmed on its twitter Status that the Froyo Update is Coming on November on its Final Version and to All Network operators and No More Delays...No More pulling-out!!
We Got Some Information that the Release Date of the Galaxy S Froyo update for USA Carriers and UK Carriers is somewhere around 11th November,2010 as a FINAL Release Date. Worldwide release will follow in few days after the Official Release of the Froyo ROM for Samsung Galaxy S, which Means that All Galaxy S users Worldwide (Include Middle-East and Arab gulf users) will get the update on November along with UK,USA Carriers too.
Froyo rolling out in UK Nov 4
So The Update is Coming Finally and NO More Delays AT ALL... More Stable... More Smoother, its a matter of time right Now. As I always say "Waiting for the froyo to come-out, better than waiting for it to load!".

Hmm. My read of the actual text that Samsung sent out is not actually any different than it was a week or so ago: the i9000 will probably have 2.2 sometime before the end of the month, along with the rest of the UK/Europe. I really don't see anything in the "official" Samsung notice that indicates Verizon, or any other US carrier.
However, since the blog posts cite "Some information" for "somewhere around 11th, November as a FINAL release date" (How's that for ambiguous, "somewhere around", but it's also "FINAL"...), I'll be guardedly optimistic.
Make that HEAVILY GUARDEDLY optimistic...
Verizon will decide when its released, not Samsung.

I don't care. Wait before you flame, please...
I spent the last year with an Omnia, and I tried every possible rom on it until I found the one I liked/could put up with the missing features. It wasn't perfect, but I knew that a sweet android phone was in my upgrade future so I dealt. WinMo has it's flaws, but you can't fault the dev community for everything they did to make an ok device better.
Now here I sit swyping on arguably the best hardware on the market (other Galaxy S offerings aside...) and I have to say I really like it.
Voodoo-ed, de-binged, de-odexed, and de-TouchWizzed is way easier than trying a dozen roms on a weekend and adding .cabs from 100 websites to come up with a phone that still half the time didn't know where my finger was trying to press!
What does FroYo have to offer? Apps that run off the SD card? Flash? Minor, although it is a bit frustrating that by the time we get it, it will just about be time for gingerbread.
Guess I'm trying to say, the best stuff about froyo is going to get too us sooner or later whether VZW or Samsung give it to us or the very talented dev community here makes it happen. News that comes from them isn't why I log in here.

I'm sorry I couldn't help it. I wont do it again I swear.
Honestly I can't wait to see what magic the dev community creates with Froyo and the Fascinate. My thanks to all of you!!!
Hopefully what happened with all the Droid 1 releases is what will happen here:
Motorola (in this case Samsung) readies a build, gives it to VZW for testing.
VZW takes forever testing it, and either rejects or preps it for release.
The "hopefully" part is that, hopefully, in the meantime, the file gets leaked from the Samsung end and into our hands.
Not trying to be pessimistic, but if that first file didn't leak, Im doubtful that this one will leak early either
If Verizon decides to sit on the release at least we have US Cellular as a backup. In fact it seems like US Cellular does not waste their time with carrier customizations so they might just push it out the same day they get it from Samsung.
I used to be a US Cellular customer, my wife still is, they will not get in any hurry, I would not count on them for anything.

You missed the point of the post bud.
Verizon, or any carrier, does NO customizations, they have NO development (read: coding) teams. They don't alter the file they receive from the OEM (in this case Samsung) in ANY WAY. The bloatware you see comes with the build straight out of Samsung's repository, with the specs that Verizon requested. They take their sweet time for a multitude of reasons, and somewhere in that timeframe its held up for internal testing. Each carrier is different, but Verizon is notorious for being an extensive tester, and rejecting builds pretty often.
Bloatware that Samsung did not code....VZW did or outsourced. Hence people are arguing with you. You aren't wrong, but neither are you entirely correct.

I made this post to give some indication of the progress of Froyo, sadly most people want more or are intent on offering some type of dark cloud.
I know Froyo might not be released on the 11th, but at least we have a legit source of its progress. Hopefully around that time or before we will have a leaked build for testing and or roms (like some other devices). I'm sure thats when the dev section will take off.
well if samsung releases it Nov 11, dont they post the source up too, so we could have a modded version running before vzw does anything?
I think i wont be wrong if i say this " Dell streak is living in stone age"

and where we are

Official Update 2.2: Sorry i havent got my cristal ball with me today

agreed the software is behind. But the hardware is right on par. To me the more important thing is the hardware - because the software can be upgraded (as seen with Steve's Froyo).
I too was skeptic about not having a recent update to Android on this device. Regardless this device is miles ahead of my old Touch Pro 2. 2.2 is coming and I'm sure there's a lot of behind-the-scenes legal mumbo-jumbo responsible for the schedule. Dell is new to the smartphone game and I'm sure there's a learning curve.
Anyone on XDA is probably here for the same reason. We want the BEST for our phones, but, waiting on carriers to release updated roms is like waiting for paint to dry.
The suits in charge of the carriers probably have to have a dozen or more meetings before they release an update, if they even update it at all.
Another reason I think the carriers should get out of the hardware business and
just be a provider. Yes, probably more headaches trying to make everything compatible, but just look at the Asian markets, and the numerous options they have for hardware. What to the states get? A few phones a year.
1.6 came out about a year ago, the streak was probably slated for its release then. its amazing the small gaps between major software releases from google. im just hoping froyo for the streak comes out before gingerbread does. i like knowing my device runs on the latest and greatest, even if its only for a day.
I for 1 was happy it came with 1.6 it gave me chance to play with 1.6 and 2.1 and next is 2.2 and after 3.0 so in my eyes its like haveing 4 different devices

We were promised by Optus that mid November we would get Froyo. Hit them up on @Optus on twitter or their support email. If more people start asking then we will actually get an answer.
At the rate it's going, we might well be the very last people in the world to get Froyo for our devices, even though we were some of the earliest adopters for the handset.
Keep us updated on your progress mate. I don;t have a twitter account but am in the same books as you.
I have rung them a few times but they are less then knowledgeable with a response.
Most of them you talk to don't have a clue what your talking about. ie. Firmware what?
Then try and direct you to call Samsung.
The last time I spoke to Samsung in Australia they couldn't provide any details at all.
A sad sad state of affairs to be sure.
This was posted on another forum I'm a member of (not phone related, just a Galaxy S thread). Sorry, I don't have links to back it up, so take it with a grain of salt.
From Optus Business Blog: dt. 16/11
.................
News: Android 2.2 for Samsung Galaxy S is now available
16/11/2010
Owners of Samsung's Galaxy S line of phones have been patiently waiting for the Android 2.2 update that many other Android owners have had for months, and now it looks like the wait may finally be over.
Samsung has announced that later tonight, at 8:00 PM, a download will become available to SamsungMobile.com that will be compatible with all Galaxy S devices, upgrading them to Android 2.2.
The news comes after Google and Samsung have continuously been dodgy about details regarding the update for Samsung's Android-powered smartphones. To date, the only handsets to receive the upgrade have been phones manufactured by other companies. Only about a quarter of all Android users have upgraded their device to the latest OS.
Many of those who haven't upgraded simply have a phone that is too outdated to receive it. But the Galaxy S platform is one of the most technically adept on the market right now and is more than capable of running Froyo.
Exactly what has been causing the hold-up is anyone's guess, but it's been a real problem for Samsung as it tries to market the devices.
Android 2.2 brings with it features like full browser support for the latest Flash video standard, the ability to use your phone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, and enhanced voice controls for all aspects of the device. It should be a welcome addition to the Galaxy S family.

This is from a US news website called TGDaily which was talking about the update but he missed the mark for sure.
It's not specifically related to OPTUS at all but a general comment stating Froyo was now available.
When you go to the Samsungmobile.com website you have to pick a region.
Australia takes you to that regions site and the Kies version here is way way old 1.5.1.10083
When you install this Kies, it will prompt you to update to the newer version.
BUT.......no Froyo.
Sad sad sad.

All of this was proven to be wrong, and was copied from a blog entry from the day before from TG Daily.
It was promptly removed from the Optus blog.
Optus made an announcement on Twitter that Samsung delivered to them around 01/11/2010 the new firmware. They had to create their optus customisation for it and intended to release it mid november. Now its the 19th and it still isn't out. I figure anyone who cares should go put a question to them @Optus or their support email until we get an answer.
I don't mind the wait as such, it's just that I want to know what they are doing. I hate "two more weeks". IF they could say we are having trouble getting the widget to work and we want that working before we release, then OK, but silence is just downright frustrating!
Why the heck do you need the Optus customisations for? It's not like you get extra wallpapers or optimisations just a bunch of useless widgets and shortcuts but whatever.
I hope official firmware from Optus is better than Nordic JPA version.
I have JPA Froyo on my optus GS via Reg hack. Wifi is ify and phone lags...
Put same app side by side on GS and iPhone, GS one is slow.
EG. Kids only want to use iPhone for Talking Tomcat because it does not miss every second word.
Sad!
I was in the same boat as you guys not long ago. Waiting for Optus to release their modified firmware, checking kies day to day. I got kinda fed up waiting, figured that the firmware is of course just going to include all the optus and samsung bloatware to slow down the phone. Not to mention relying on kies to work properly.
So in the end I just put Dark's Rom on. works fantastically really. learnt how to do it (easy guide in his thread) and actually did it in under half an hour. the actual doing it only takes like 10 minutes. I know it's not for everyone, but i'm so glad I decided to go down that route rather than rely on optus.
I don't understand why you guys have to know what's going on all the time.. Optus have stated that their release intention is "By the end of November", for quite some time now.
Knowing exactly what's going on won't get you the release any faster, it serves no purpose but to waste their time by answering the children in the back seat "Are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet".
We'll get there, when we get there.
Perhaps if December comes along, and it's still not release, THEN start nagging.
Or just abandon all hope and flash a rom! I mean you are on xda after all.
I was waiting with my old eclair rom but went and flashed docs rom. I only regret not doing it sooner.

Alot of custom firmware comes with the Optus APN, the one I'm using at the moment came with it.
Which is Insanity.. Very barebones but you can easily install whatever stock apk's you want via the included link he gave to them on his thread.
If you want the Optus apk's (Why on earth you would is beyond me..) I'm almost sure you could get them off optus zoo, just give Optus a call and find out if you have any troubles I guess.

Edit: Also the Optus APN info can easily be added to the phone manually by going to Wireless and network > mobile networks > Access Point Names > press menu button, new APN
and the information for the APN (and all other Aussy ones) is here: http://ausdroid.net/apns/
I'm not neccessarily after a date, I want a reason. If they would just let us know that they really are still working on it, they aren't stuck with a resource problem or something like that then OK. I just hate it when they leave you with no news.
And my original statement still stands that we may well be the last carrier to actually get Froyo. I want the official one because I'm going into Optus if it doesn't fix the GPS for a warranty claim.
I want to know the date so I know when I can use the phone to it's full ability as advertised!

Indeed, I feel your pain. I mean what a terrible tragedy, having to wait almost a full month before a slightly updated operating system for your mobile phone becomes available. Nobody should have to bear such a tragic burden in their life. Have you asked whether the European Commission on Human Rights will take your case up?
On the other hand, you could just go to Argos and buy one - they are advertising that their Streaks come with 2.2.
@philip...ha ha I am sure you are being sarcastic there...

it's just the 'customer unawareness' of dell/o2 which bothers me...nuthin else..
Dell, carriers?
If Dell "officially" releases the update, then the carriers pack their crap onto the update, does Dell have to check it for compatibility before the carriers sign off on it? Or do the carriers send their crap to Dell, dell packages it into their OS, then tests it, and then the carriers sign off on it?
God knows I wouldn't defend the manufacturer or the carrier, but does anyone know the procedure?
THIS is a glaring example of why carriers need to get the $*#&% out of the hardware/software side of the wireless phone business, and become pipes.
(In the USA) it use to be, you provide the phone, we provide the dial tone.
Now, I'm not naive enough to know why the carriers want to stay in the hardware
side of the business, but, as phones, software evolve, they need to seriously consider changing (in the USA) their business model.
At least DELL UK sell accessories for the streak........we have nothing in Australia
Not even a charger!!!

we the first person to buy these f*cking device in uk and we are getting at last seriously love the device but dell a complete dirt company to deal with
To be fair, 02 added very little bloat to the Streak. Either 1.6 or 2.2. I personally would rather wait a couple of weeks for them to sort out the bugs in the thus far released 2.2 builds before it hits O2.
I'm currently using 2.1 with a mildly tweaked build.prop & ADW Launcher and other than the lack of flash it isn't lacking much.
Maybe I'm just more chilled as I'm getting older but I don't really see that the sky is falling down just because I have to wait a few days more for a phone firmware update.
Dell are fixing some of the bugs (hopefully more than some) in the initial 00 released roms..
you wouldn't want them to send the o2 ones out with something that stopped you watching iplayer would you?
Same here stateside...would rather wait until it is RIGHT...before updating.
When I was younger, as soon as a point release would come out, I'd jump on it.
Not so much anymore. I want stable.
I use to go bleeding edge on hardware for the PC, tweaking and tweaking to get the performance, and then living with unstable systems.
Last pc I built replaced one that I built and was stable for over six years, running 24/7. The one I built, should be as stable for another six.

Official update
Hi everybody,
There is a link that gives you all the countries who are able to download the official update; go check on streaksmart and you will see a link for unlocked models; So I did and I am on froyo with my unlocked streak; I would say just one thing don't hesitate, it is official but happens manually...

The 'official' update was withdrawn until some bug fixes are done, anything you download just now will be unofficial and buggy.
It is the official update

Hello @ all,
the launch of 4.0 is near and many custom-roms based partially of a nexus device.
i wait hopeful for the first steps
a rumour that i see in the internet, that DELL want to be publish a 4.0-based rom for the streak, i can´t believe that.
see you
J. L.
Hi Jürsche,
i think there is no doupt dell will not bring out any updates to our devices. don't even waste time on thinking about it. when wishing for a ics-rom the best thing you can do is make one yourself - if you can, actually. The few devs working on streak5 here are doing the best they can providing a working gingerbread to overcome the end of development by dell. So far they are doing an excellent job (which i recommend supporting by a small donation!), but it might happen that we'll never see an ics on the streak5 if nobody builds one (which is most probably not so easy)

Strongly agree with u. Dell just left us in middle of the road but in "EOL" site they wrote it was nice journey. Maybe its from thr business side opinion not from user side.
I actually can't agree with Gostl's assessment simply because the Streak is still available, just not in the United States. The Streak is a new device for some Asian countries so it stands to reason that there will at some point be a Gingerbread release. Ice Cream Sandwich? I don't believe so, but it would be nice to be wrong.
I believe GingerStreak is a dell pre beta release. It will be realeased officially in an Asian country.

Firstly please dont YELL IN ALL CAPS,
secondly that's blatently false, dell is STILL releasing the S5 into new markets, it'd be shinanigans to think that they would release into a market and not supply any support for it at all for a new product there.
Dell stopped selling it in the original launch countries, but it still provides support for them there.
Yes it is HIGHLY unlikely for them to release an official ICS, but regardless of support, for a device this old you wouldnt realistically expect ICS for any product it's age.

except for the 2, uhm, nexi? nexuses?
Those are the exceptions since google directly makes the roms for them, how many other devices launched with them do you expect to keep being supported?

yes, its been sell in new markets and also its still sold in already markets (like India) its been sell like hell here. Most of owners like watching other ppl mouth open after seeing a phone so so cool (& big for ppl with small phone's )
but i said (in last posts) what i heard The way i heard
Who cares if it's OTA? A custom Rom would still be aweesomeeee!!!
ICS is gorgeous.

oh don't get me wrong mate I completely agree with you! i think that zero is the answer, but tb completely h i guess the streak might have the horsepower required to run the sandwich (albeit with a slightly underpowered gpu). as a matter of fact I just replied to topic because I thought "nexi" was a funny word and I just HAD to share my findings.
For any device with a 1st gen snapdragon or newer or equivilent, ICS will actually make them faster.
GB -> HC -> ICS each include more and more HW acceleration, so anything with an actual GPU would gain from it, at least in theory. Actual outcome depends on the quality of the port/drivers
U can make your own ICS Port.
Here is a tut :

Don't ask me how, I have no understanding of whats in this thread
ICS Port
Hy @ all,
i sent maxicet a pm about this tutorial.
maybe a chance ...

Hi,
hope it will come for our beloved Streak, but i wonder that can it be flashed with current streak config. , the ICS need more powerful hardware requirement

as a matter of fact it will be running on the nexus s which does not differ that much from the streak specs wise. So i guess the streak can handle it..
