can't have root acces with rc29 - G1 General

Hi, I'm so confused. To downgrade from froyo 2.2(i had no sound) I installed the rc29 dreaimg.nbh and now I would like to activate my G1 using root access and turning on wifi(no data plan) but I can't get root access.I did the reboot test but it doesn't work.when I try to flash dreaimg again,it doesn't start when pressing power button. Please help me.

hi...
is ur phone turning on???
direct power?
home+power??
camera+power???
u flashed the .nbh file via fastboot???
the way u have have described is not very clear....
can u explain properly without the element of panic???

the phone turn on,camera+power,Home+power all work fine.I installed dreaimg.nbh after holding camera+power.I did it to downgrade but now I m not able to activate my G1.perhaps I did it wrong.when I try to reinstall dreaimg.nbh it doesn't start after pressing power button.

i mean....is the phone turning on????
are u having problems with registering once the phone powers on????
or problems way before while turning it on???
ur radio spl versions???
uk/us model???

I don't have problem when turning on but the matter is I don't have data plan to register my google account so I want to turn on wifi in order to activate.I did it earlier(before upgrading to froyo) and it worked but to do I need root access first.

ohh.....then skip the initial registration process????

oh...skipping aint a possibility i guess with the downgrade....
i remember i had downgraded to 1.0(i know i know-but it's real)....
so had to add apn and all blah blahs till made it work again
i reckon there's no option to skip that step...hmmm???
no data plan???

there is no way to skip this process.it s a Tmobile G1 US model.is it possible to find a rom different from rc29 to downgrade and have root access?I don't see another solution.I have no data plan because I don't live in united state and the phone is sim locked.I need to activate and buy an unlock code because tmobile told me they was not able to give me blabla.......

where do u live?
i have a t-mobile G1(unlocked ofcourse) which is german and am in india
but whenever i get that part(on start up-google log in stuff) i can do that.....
but the t-mobile thing...i guess i faed the same once but somehow sneaked away
u have lost ur root????

Here is what you will need to do. Since you have G1 T-Mobile US. And I am assuming you are not with T-Mobile. You have 2 options
OPTION 1:
Code:
1st - Either buy the Unlock code or get with HTC/T-Mobile for a FREE unnlock code.
2nd - Downgrade your G1 to RC29. (you already done that)
3rd - Put in your SIM chip and it will ask you for the unlock code. Use the unlock code provided by the vendor as indicated in 1st step.
4th - Root your phone (you can search for the how to on these forum)
5th - Find ezTerry SPL/radio thread, update your SPL/radio.
6th - Flash the custom ROM of your choice
OPTION 2:
Code:
1st - Find a friend who have a T-Mobile data service. Borrow their SIM chip.
2nd - Downgrade your G1 to RC29. (you already done that)
3rd - Put in your friend T-Mobile SIM chip and setup your activation screen.
4th - Root your phone (you can search for the how to on these forum)
5th - Find ezTerry SPL/radio thread, update your SPL/radio.
6th - Flash the custom ROM of your choice
FYI! The two options above are just the basic steps, they are not instruction for rooting your G1. There are too many instructions on the G1 forum, you can find them easily.

Thanks guys,I put a foreign sim card and it asked me the sim unlock code.I m not obliged to activate first.after unlocking what custom rom could I flash, I tried froyo 2.2 before but I had no sound from the device.I did something wrong or it's just a bug of froyo?could you give me too a good website(reliable) to buy an unlock code?

I am using SuperAosp 6.4, and I am happy with it. If you like you can try it.

Questions about re-flashing...Issues with ROM

ok so its been awhile since ive been here checked the wiki seen a couple threads that really didnt address my questions/concerns so hopefully someone can answer them here
my story starts with a mytouch 3g w/o 3.5 if that matters that i bought off craigslist and someone rooted it and flashed it with jesusfreks 1.51 rom and when i got it home i noticed issues with the wifi not working when i try to start it the phone just says unable to start wifi i googled this issue and saw alot of people had this issue and most common answer was just to re-flash the phone is this right??
second question is right now i dont have a data plan on my phone until this month is up im on a flex-pay and dont want to pay for a full month of data plan i can only use for 5 days so if i re-flash my phone do i have to activate the phone if so will i be blocked out until i activate the phone??
third question is since i dont have a gold card do i have to make one to re-flash the phone if i have to re-flash to jesusfreke's 1.51 rom or would life be easier just reverting to a stock tmobile rom and repeating the whole process since i dont know what whoever before me had this thing did to it???
sorry if these are stupid questions that have already been answered or are common sense i figure i ask now before i have to create another HELP!!! I BRICKED MY PHONE THREAD thanks in advance
First try booting in fastboot (press down back+power). See what SPL and what radio you have. SPL should say something like HBOOT-1.33.0004 and radio should say something like 2.22.32.02 (can't remember the exact radio I have). You should probably write down everything on there and give info on here. Then press menu to turn off the phone.
Boot into recovery mode first (by pressing down home+power) to see if the person before you who rooted the phone had installed a recovery image (you should know how a recovery image looks like). If he has, and preferably Amon_Ra's, then it is rather simple to reflash. Just select wipe data/factory reset from the recovery image, flash a new ROM, and you're all set.
As for the data plan, you can easily skip activation steps and enable wifi and access your gmail through the market. If your wifi doesn't work, then I guess you do have to get someone's SIM with a data plan to activate it. But without having a data plan and wifi not working, I would say your magic is kind of useless.. (well unless you install ASTRO on there and install tons of apks I guess, but still no connectivity)
I don't know if there is a stock tmobile ROM that doesn't have the perfect SPL (mine being vodafone and I haven't researched it) so you probably have to do your research again.
if your on jesusfreks rom you should be able to boot into recovery and install any rom from there as your already have root, you dont need a gold card (unless you borked up and installed a tmo rom already)...
check to see if you can get into recovery by powering down the phone and holding the home key as you power up...if you can do that then just download the rom of your choice, place it on the root of your sd card and install from recovery..

when i hold down the home and power key i do get into the recovery screen which has the back up restore and apply sdcard update etc... so i guess i can just throw another rom onto the card and update that way???

Rogers Dream /w t-mo firmware

So long story short, I did what some have managed to do... Flashed to a T-Mo ROM by accident... I'm pretty pissed over all of this and I've been searching for hours and can't really find a stable answer.
Basically I have a rogers sim and when I insert it, it doesn't ask for a unlock code or anything, however it does ask me to log into my google account which I try but I cant get any service due to the T-mobile rom...
What can I do? I also tried to go into recovery mode and tried to boot a rom and I get errors.
Thanks in advance
post me everything you see in the fastboot menu. Also, what errors do you get? Do you have the stock recovery or amon ra's? And you can't connect to WiFi either? I'm not sure which tmo rom you flashed but I'm sure they have wifi (correct me if I'm wrong!)
hey thanks for replying,
I cant get into fastboot at all. I can only get into the recovery screen with the exclimation mark and the triangle.
When the phone boots into the OS all I can get to is the "tap the droid to begin", can't adjust wifi settings or anything.
toppers?
anyone?
I would bet if you got a T-Mobile SIM you would be good as gold. You could also try rooting your phone and installing a different firmware. T-Mobile has a pretty robust development forum so you could ask there.
forums dot t-mobile dot com/t5/Operating-System-Software/bd-p/AndroidDev
I am really interested in how you flashed the T-Mobile firmware in the first place. Did you have a rooted Rogers Rom, if not, what was the version that had, post e911 update? Where did you get the rom that you flashed your phone with, so many questions! Thanks
Yea I did. I had a cyanogen rom, and I wanted to update it. I wasnt paying attention... I didnt have the 911 update.
I did put in my wifes bell sim and unlock screen did pop up. So here arises another question, whats the fastest unlock service. I'm sure once I get it unlocked ill be able to re root with the G1 tutorial and re-flash a custom rogers rom?
You don't even need to unlock your phone to downgrade and replace the rom. I would just follow the directions to root a t-mobile g1 and then reflash with whatever rom you want.
If you do want to unlock I would recommend eBay because of the feedback system and it is the quickest and cheapest IMHO.

bought a hero from CEX. "no service"

Hey all,
just grabbed a 2nd hand tmobile hero from CEX.
tried to pop my o2 sim straight in just it case it just worked. it didnt. so i went away and bought a sim card unlock code. got it but then realised i had nowhere to enter it.....the phone doesnt ask for a code when it boots.
when the phone locks it has a pic of the sim and says "No Service"
and when i goto "search for mobile networks" i get the full set - o2 - tmobile - orange - 3 - vodafone....but when i select o2 or anything else it says "your sim card does not allow connection to this network"....
im stumped.
any ideas?
It should ask for the unlock code once any NON-Tmobile sim is inserted.
So it should ask for a code with your O2 sim in.
UNLESS,.... Your O2 sim is a freebie that came through the post months ago. Check the expiry date on the sim. But if it has been activated already and works fine in another handset then it could be your handset that is faulty.
... One more thing.
Some Orange handsets were shipped with a ROM that could not be unlocked unless you downgrade the ROM 1st. This could also be the issue.
cheers for quick help mate.
i read a bit about the orange prob but this is a tmobile handset....
its a contract o2 sim that ive had for AGES.
just popped in a mates vodafone sim PAYG and it's still booted all the way to the android home screen without asking for an unlock code! how strange....
ive gone to the "connect to mobile network" menu and selected vodafone and it's just sitting, saying "registering on vodafone uk"....its been sat there for 5 mins now.
im thinkin the aerial maybe faulty?
or it might be stolen and be disabled?
....
but neither of those explain why it doesnt ask for an unlock code at boot does it???
Aha,....
I looks like you might actually have the same issue as some Orange handsets,... Apparently some T-Mobile ROMS are "perfect spl's", which do need downgrading before any unlocking or custom ROM flashing can be done.
Use BTDAG's guide linked in my signature.
- Start at the top 1st to try and install the custom recovery. But this should fail at some point. This means that you do infact have the perfect spl issue and will need to create a goldcard to downgrade your ROM. All the info you need for that is further down the 1st post in BTDAG's guide. This is a little long winded to do, can take about an hour or so to colmplete, but well worth it.
Ideally, it would save you time if you could get hold of a T-Mobile SIM 1st just to confirm that it hasn't been reported lost/stolen, it'd be a right pain in the ass if you spent time downgrading for no reason.
Also,... make a note of the rom you have currently installed just incase you do downgrade and find out its a dudd. That way you can reflash it to factory state to get your refund.
ok. thanks loads....that sounds possible....it feels like a phone issue rather than a connection issue, not sure why, it just does.
here goes.
cheers again.
Good luck bruv,... Keep me updated on how it goes.
ah..i popped onto https://www.checkmend.com a few minutes ago just to check. it says the imei is blocked on some networks but hasnt been reported stolen...phew..
yup "backup failed"...
time to make myself a coffee
Anychance you could give me a screenprint of what details checkmend gives you.
Just so I know for future ref.
Take out any sensitive details, i.e.... imei.
hmm..it hasnt worked - it says "no service" now. and still says that "this sim cannot connect to that network" when trying to choose o2.
it also boots up into airplane mode.
i now get an Droid startup screen rather than Tmobile so im assuming the flash has worked ok???

Hmmm,... Did it ask for the unlock code?...
... also which ROM have you flashed it with?....
still hasnt asked for a network code.
i popped this one on it VillainROM 5.5: Release Version - for GSM HERO
its so weird. i keep wondering if i'm doing anything stupid....the shop had another hero, an orange one - i maybe will just go back in and try and swap em. but if they test it with a tmobile simcard and it works i'm kinda stuffed aint i?

Phew!!!
No, no,.... U NEED to flash with a 1.5 ROM 1st. 2.1 ROMs aren't accepting the unlock codes for some reason.
Flash it with a 1.5 rom, unlock, then put Villian back on,... All will be ok!
2.1? 1.5? you've lost me! lol
ahhh...you're talking about android versions right? 1.5 is cupcake right???
does it need 1.5 on to unlock or should it have tried to unlock when i had the recovery rom on there? cause it didnt ask there either....

Yeah yeah. So before you put the recovery on, you had to downgrade the ROM yeah, then after that you put the Amon Ra Custom Recovery on yeah?... and than after that you put the Villian Rom on? Thats correct yeah?
When you downgraded the ROM you could have unlocked it then as that would have been an Android 1.5 ROM.
But Villian is 2.1.
Use the link to MCR3.2 in my link and install that.
hmm...well when i put the recovery on, the amon ra 1.6.2, i had my sim in and it still didnt prompt for a sim unlock code when i booted.
i'll try the MCR one when i get home from work tonight.
i ordered a rebel sim the other day just in case - should be getting that thru soon - it might help?

Yeah try MCR tonight and let me know.
I'v been using a rebelsim on mine since I got it, its still locked to Orange but happily using my O2 sim with no issues. But you dont want the money you already spent on your unlock code to go to waste do ya.
i dont but failing technology can make a frustrated dude spend money like water cant it!?!?
i will try and get a refund if i dont end up using the code.
cheers for your help and i'll try the mcr anyway tonight.

[Q] Rogers Unrooting Woes.

Ok. So I have a Rogers Dream. I rooted it and flashed to cyan froyo. All was well. Long story short I need to send the phone back to rogers. I tried the first unrooting procedure I found and am stuck now. I tried the Dream/G1 unrooting method. I am now stuck with a T-Mobile G1 bootloader and cannot load any images from here.
I have spent the last 2 days seraching every rogers unrooting thread I could find with no success.
I am looking to get back to the rogers 911 update so I can send the phone back.
I hate to post when i'm sure it has been covered. But any help would be awesome. Any info you need I can provide asap
Sounds like you tried to install a T-Mobile ROM in a Rogers phone. You would have to use a gold card to make that work, but you would be left with a tmo branded phone. Try searching Rogers' site for their latest full ruu, probably the one with the 911 patch.
I have that. But I need to be able to boot up fully to run that. I have the t-mobile bootloader.. and thats it
You will need to reflash the T-Mobile rom with a goldcard until it will boot, root it via telnet after signing into Google (via a wifi hack?) then install 1.33.2003 spl, that will let you use fastboot to install 1.33.2005 and thus the rogers rom.
Hope the defect isn't going to interfere with this..
Ok. Now I just read a procedure on creating a gold card. This requires a running phone? This phone.. does not run. I can get into the bootloader and thats about all.
You can see if you can boot and wipe from recovery. If then android boots you may be able to skip the gold card.
However you are I assume stuck on HBOOT-0.95.0000
If you download the rogers nbh, rename it to DREAIMG.nbh, place it on the root of your SD and try to flash by turning the phone on holding camera, you will likely receive an error (if not it will flash the Rogers rom)
If you get the error you will need to flash rc29 the only DREAIMG.nbh known to work, the problem is its signed for the us T-Mobile region and you have a phone for the rogers Canada region.. the way to skip the region check is you make a goldcard and use that to flash the nbh.
This requires you to know the Cid of an SD card.. and the easiest way to find that is a working android / winmo phone (does not need to be the broken phone, you can make the goldcard on a friends phone and use it in yours). This is because most USB sdcard readers don't provide access to the cid.
With the goldcard you can try to flash rc29 again, hopefully boot android, root it like a T-Mobile phone, reinstall (carefully) dangerspl allowing you to at last safely flash the rogers rom.
Short of time travel and preventing your past self from installing a T-Mobile stock rom on a Rogers phone.. I'm short on alternative ideas.
I am stuck with HBOOT-1.33.0009
The RC29 DREAIMG.nbh wont flash.

That is not the T-Mobile bootloader.. that is an older rogers one (and other HTC branded dreams)
And here is the rogers unroot instructions

And on the topic what isn't working that you are thinking the phone requires to be returned?
that worked! thanks!

[Q] flash without android activation

i was given a lost or reported htc magic 32b, dude just wanted a newer phone
so it got blacklisted, im using it as a test phone to learn rooting flashing roms etc
i made a goldcard i copied the sappimg.nbh and FlashRec files etc and all went well, then i get to the welcome screen emergency call change language
i cannot go any further if plug in the usb cable i get nothing, as i cannot activate
the phone to get into menu add the rest of the files to flash etc i have sdk working but like i said it does not see the phone, as i said i am using it as a tester for my actual working htc magic 1.6 that i want to flash cyanogen rom.
i thought id rather brick the blacklisted one as it wont work anyway, before i try the methods on my working one.
Moving to General
bump any ideas plz
I don't think you can.. I tried that without data plan but noway to pass the activation for mytouch 3g. just use your other mytouch simcard (assuming you have dataplan) and activate it..then do all the rom install.. from then on..you don't need the dataplan..you will have a skip option with all roms...
(borrow friend's sim for few seconds to activate)
(get the dataplan and cancel it when you think you don't need it)
