I need to take my Hero back to factory specs because I'm taking it into a sprint store tomorrow. What all do I need to do... should I just flash my original rom back on there or can I download a rom from htc and it will clear everything? I understand I need to flash a new recovery image too.
Thanks
oh also, I'm running FreshRom.

You can flash the original rom back on there and be fine. They wont EVER press Home+power and boot into recovery.
If you really want to go back to default.. Run this RUU

after you run this can you re-root?. im new to android and i want to be able to restore to factory settings whenever after root just so i can re-root and practice it, as well as know how to fix it if i do something stupid or just brick the darn thing.
like i said im new and not good with forums where can i get a copy of the original rom? i would like to have that before i attempt to root.
also kinda off topic but do i have to be rooted to make nanoid backup. i would also like to have that before i root.

Yes you can re-root after running the .5 RUU
the original rom is contained in the RUU program linked above
You don't have to be rooted to make a nandroid backup, though you do need to flash a custom recovery image. Being rooted means that you basically have administrator access on your phone, can run things like wifi tether and can overwrite the /system/ folder. A recovery image is a little different than that...
ok thanks, i know root is just admin, but a lot of root guides have you flash a recovery image, by doing that you replace the original recovery image? the one that takes you back to factory reset? thats what im not sure about and im really nervous about changing that and messing it up and bricking my device, thought one forum said its almost imposable to brick.
ok so i have that RUU and another one i download. do i just run it or do i need to have a specific program on my pc?
i know i need to Google it and just search the forums but i don't have a lot of time on my hands right now.
If you're planning on going back to root, don't run the .6 RUU. I don't think it's rootable. At least that was the case when it came out. .5 IS rootable.

Menu - settings - about phone - software information - software number.
If it is .6, who cares. You can get root by going to the development section and finding the root guide written by regaw_leinad, and the solution for software number .6 is in there, too. Dunno why people make it out to be such a bad thing to have .6... seriously.

Exactly. .6 isn't rootable yet but you are losing nothing by flashing back to .5 except for the patch they released to fix root exploit. What a waste of time for them.

But thats after you run the RUU.exe I meant how do you know what version of the RUU.exe coincides with what version of the software with out installing or running it. I am still a little confused on what I need to do with the RUU.exe and or what it dose. I have been searching the forums but there is not a Good sticky or wiki about it, its only the definition. I am assuming it re-installs a fresh copy of whatever that version of the OS is, but i don't know for sure.

sorry I am such a noob and thanks for the help but i just want to clarify that .6 stands for 1.6 or donut?
-Thanks for helping the noob!!!
2.27.651.5 is the original Hero update.
2.27.651.6 is the update that was released solely to disable the ability to root.
The RUU for each was released by Sprint/HTC and flashed your phone from 1.5 to 2.whatever.
If you root, then you can run any of these to revert back to the stock Sprint image. If you chose to go to 2.27.651.6 then the only way to re-root would be to flash back to 2.27.651.5 which would only be a pain in the bum.
Since 2.27.651.6 gives you nothing but the inability to root then it only makes sense to revert to .5.
If this makes no sense to you...feel free to give up on rooting altogether. If it does then good luck.
BTW I only figured out how to root on Monday so these forums are most excellent..if you take the time to search through them.
Thanks its starting to make sense, right now I'm software 2.1 update 1 or 2.6 so i just have to go back to 2.5 . once i have more time i will thanks for the explanation! yes this site is the best and yes i need to search more.
Ok, I've looked and searched and googled for the last few weeks now. I have a mytouch 4g that is on the stock rom w/ ota update. I do have perm root and s-off, per the thread here on xda. However, I can't get it to flash anything at all. Either in the hboot (bootloader) or in clockwork. I tried to flash a the cm7 (had on my hd2 and loved it) in clockwork, says can't open /directory addy with rom, then has this: (bad) installation aborted. I tried to flash a stock image to try and start over, the pd15img, had it named correctly etc. It goes for a sec, then says the .nbh files are missing for 3 different things. Can anyone help or is this phone effed? I can use it just fine, but the stock rom sucks and has stupid drm, which doesn't let me play most of my music. If someone can help and has paypal I WILL make a donation to you, I'm not rich, but am a busy father of 2 divorced with a full time job. PLEASE HELP!!!!

That's why you can't flash the stock image, which is Froyo based. 3.0.0.5 can only flash Gingerbread ROMs. However, that doesn't explain why CM7 won't boot for you, since 3.0.0.5 should successfully flash that. My suggestion would be to flash CWM 3.0.0.6 (can handle all ROMs) and then try re-flashing CM7 or the stock ROM.
I'll give it a whirl right now....will report back
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11322299&postcount=1
There's the download for it. I meant to put it in my previous post.
I was pretty sure I tried this a while ago, and I was right, still nothing. It says the same thing, (bad) installation aborted, before all of that it says can't open /filedirectory. Seriously peeved at this phone at this point. It will not flash anything at all.
It could also be a corrupt SD card, or even though you have S-OFF, your phone isn't actually fully rooted (seems unlikely though since CWM is successfully installed). I'm sure someone else will chime in here eventually.
i have a couple spares, i'll check it out real quick. usually my comp will tell me if there is an issue with the sd card, so I'll try another quick like. I have and am using an sdhc patriot that is ok per tmobile, and i have an 8 and 16gb laying around also
edit it was a kingston in there. would that make a difference?

How many bad downloads have you gotten? I always download ROM files with my PC, and then transfer them to the SD via the USB cable. I always verify the MD5 when I can, but most devs don't provide that these days.
I gotten about 11 since I have had this phone. Thinking its something to do with my router. Noticed I drop connection for a second randomly. which can cause file to be corrupt. To lazy to get a new router lol

Hello everybody! I'm new to the forums. I also got a really big question to ask. Well I usually root my phone with Visionary using a TempRoot. Then I updaed my Evo Shift via OTA, or going to the HTC Software update thing and now I can't really root my phone I guess. Is there a solution to root my phone even though I have Gingerbread? If not right now, maybe soon? I really want to use the tethering app to tether to my PS3. PLEASE HELP!!!!
As of now no there is not. And it might take a while before there is one. Idk if your phone already came with the ota update, but if it didn't you could have waited cuz the same day the ota went live there was a rooted version here already.
Just about 2 hrs later it was rooted.Pretty much a fundemental, if htc or sprint push out an ota update it will unroot your phone.

You can use the sprint RUU to downgrade to froyo and then root it, worked for me, I'm not on my computer so I can't link it but it shouldn't be that hard to find. And instead of temp rooting it there's a nice gui in the dev section that will perm root it pretty easily then u can flash the rooted 2.3 update through CWM

Luckily the RUU pretty much walks you through the process itself. You'll need the HTC sync drivers if I remember correctly in order for it to find your phone. You should be all good. Good luck, dood

Yes, you can but it's a pain in the butt. Go to this thread and then download the original stock firmware. Make sure USB debugging is turned on also.
To install the file you need to have HTC Sync installed and running. Double-click the file and it should recognize the phone and start installing after some input from you.
If you get a USB error, try booting into the bootloader and installing the exe in the same manner.
I just did this last night because I was in the same situation. It works.

It's still the same update. Whether I installed it through an OTA update or from the bootloader doesn't matter.
You guys can get into the bootloader right? Take one of those modified "official" updates, rename it to PG06IMG.zip and flash it from the bootloader. Then do my first post and flash to Froyo so you can root again. May be worth a shot.

Unless you have an engineering bootloader, like after you rooted, you can only flash an an un modified pg0610.zip from htc. So any one who took an over the air update is SOL on that front. Best hope now is that the evo 3d root can be applied here

I have tried to update my Mytouch 4G for days now because it has the oldest update since i got the phone, and I've called T-Mobile for asistiance with update but i got ABSOLUTLY NO HELP FROM THEM AT ALLLLLLLLL!!!! Just stupid excuses
1.T-mobile only told my to reset my phone by going to "privacy" uncheck "back up my settings" and "automatic restore" then "SD & phone storages" and select "Factory data reset"
will this help or not?? Because i don't want to reset my whole phone for it not to work and not recieve the update
2.I went to "about phone" and i don't have the "check updates" option or any options at all in "about phone"
3.I also went here
support.t-mobile(dot)com/docs/DOC-1818
nothing i'm tired of waiting taking things into my own hands
Any suggustions on how to fix this problem cause i'm tired of how slow it runs and i don't have any heavy apps on it either.

Well you could do the unrooted version of 2.3.4 (gingerbread), but if you would want to root you'd have to downgrade to 2.2.1 (froyo). It's basically asking yourself if you ever want to root. If not, go with unrooted and flash through the bootloader. Press thanks if I've helped

Because to get off of unrooted 2.3.4 is quite a pain, as downgrading is required. With the rooted version changing ROMs is easy.

If your biggest concern about your phone is that is runs slow/sluggish, I think a factory reset will work just fine for you because it will wipe the data that is stored causing it to run slower.
If it were me though I would definatly root, I cant beleive I waited so long before looking into root because ill never go back to running unrooted stock again.

MT4G is not always an easy phone to root. Depends on your MMC chip. If you want to root your phone, do a forum search & read about ADB & custom recovery first & foremost. Some root methods require you to connect to your computer and push files from your computer onto your phone. I rooted 2 MT4Gs successfully, and I just started doing this last week! The guides in this forum are solid and clear-cut. As long as you follow directions you will not brick your phone. Just make sure you have a full battery charge before you start modding your phone. Insufficient charge can cause it to die in the middle of flashing & that's one surefire way to kill your phone. (Okay it doesn't have to be full charge, but trying different rooting methods all day long with my wife's MT4G did a number on my battery charge.)
Straight answer, you can do it if you try.
If your just trying to Update your phone meaning get 2.3.4 or .5 which ever one it is I forget you can easily just walk to a Tmobile store and ask for it they will update it for you for free. That way if anything happens your at the right place to get ur fixed. NOW! If your "UPDATING" it meaning want a custom ROM and root your phone check your MMC chip #1 and #2 READ!!!!! don't just jump on the first thread and start doing what it says 99% of the time you will brick your phone. So read a couple of threads and who cares what anybody says ask questions we are here to help but once you have read a couple of threads on how to ROOT ur phone and are comfortable doing so go for it. But if your not ready for all of that and just want the official Tmobile Update just go to any Tmobile store and they will glady do it for you.

I don't know what the brick rate on MT4G is, but I had a hard time bricking my wife's. I did mine pretty easily, but the same method didn't work for my wife's phone, different MMC chip. I tried 2 methods, twice, to no avail, no bricking whatsoever. Finally, on my last attempt, got it rooted & flashed. But I have to agree with Awesome's advice. Read and research before you start. Coming from a computer tech/modder background, it was easy for me to fall into step with these methods, especially since I had nothing to lose with a phone that was out of warranty due to water damage, especially when I had a backup readily available. It's funny how resilient the MT4G is, though. After drying completely and being out of use for a couple of months, it fired right up after putting it back together & charging it. Maybe that's why it was easier to root?
Anyway, reading material:
MT4G Noob Guide by saranhai
MT4G Resource Bible by halfcalf
P.S.
(details on water-damaged phone) It was completely submerged, but not for long, and turned off and disassembled (battery & cover taken off) ASAP. Probably why it still works today. Don't know if it was completely drowned if it would've ever worked again, but oh well, I have a working phone after water damage.
how do i find out what MMC chip i have and if it will let me root?
What should i start doing first off
Read through the links I sent you. They will tell you everything you need to know.

1) download the free terminal emulator app in the android market
2) open it up, and you should see a command line
3) type this command EXACTLY:
Code:
cat /sys/class/block/mmcblk0/device/name
if your device comes out with SEM04G, then GREAT.
what if it says "not found" UUURRRGGGGHHH MY MIND IS OUT TO BLOW UP!!!
