Hi
I just wanted to let you know that Dungeon Defenders: First Wave eats your Battery for breakfast. It drains the Battery even if you are charging at the same time! Plus it gets VERY hot
Is this normal?

i've heard other people complaining about this. its probably the game just not being optimized well enough for the SGS2.
you can fix the charging and overheating issue by underclocking/undervolting your phone using SetCPU or Tegrak, although i wouldn't recommend messing around with these if you have no experience doing so.
yeah i think underclocking is a good idea as long as it is not fixed. Other phones can run it (like the G2) with 700MHz singlecore so i think 700MHz Dualcore should do it...
i need root now. I thought i`d better wait a month or so to see if there are Hardware defects so i can still return it but warranty sucks anyways^^
maybe someone who is on an AOSP / Cyanogen Rom can tell me, if the drain is that high on those ROMs?

Dungeon Defenders and other games alike do have serious problems running on galaxy s2 and that includes the average fps and the overheating issue.

We shouldn't need to under clock just to play a game. My battery was on ~55% today and I played words with Friends for about 35 - 40 minutes, this shouldn't be a CPU intensive game, yet it drained my battery from 55% to about 8% and the phone got very hot. I love the SG2 but I think this is a massive problem. Does everyone else get this rate of battery drain?

I have tested 3 of them and all 3 have the same problem regarding the phone getting extremely hot in certain apps.

I'm running CM 7.2.0 with faux's 1GHz 0.2.4 kernel underclocked to 912 MHz (though I've had this with all CM roms and kernels) and after more than a minute of screen time my Atrix's CPU tends to exceed 50 degrees Celsius while the battery gets to around 40 degrees Celsius (this is recorded using setCPU). This happens most with apps like BaconReader or Facebook but has happened with others too.
I refuse to play games on my phone because it seems to nearly overheat while I'm playing any game.
When the phone starts to get hot, the battery drains faster (like 1% every 2-3 minutes).
Is there something I can do to fix this, or is this a common problem that I shouldn't mind?
Has anyone else experienced similar temperature issues?
Indeed my friend, its the Tegra 2 chipset, in fact, most of nVidia hardware tend to overheat, including Tegra 3 and PC/Laptops Video Hardware.

Never had an overheating problem without a rogue app on my Atrix. Get BetterBatteryStats and CpuSpy and see what's keeping your phone awake/running.
Crap phone, nothing you can do about it.

Get a life.
Nothing wrong with our phones except moto's traditional neglect.
OP, try going back to stock. I find I've got heat issues with custom kernels too..

Probably you have some rogue apps running in the background. You could try the GSAM battery monitor. It shows which app using the most battery and waking your phone.
It is getting hot because it is under a load. Not the phones fault. It is something you added. I had a "bad" app that looped and kept trying to write to cache. I couldn't figure it out till I used logcat. This phone still kicks ass, even if it does have Tegra II.
Also, BetterBatteryStats is free to xda users.

I would look into an kernal change if nothing else works. This has helped in the past for me

i know exactly what you're talking about, i jumped around all them roms based off of CM7 and CM9, tried different kernels, I did like Clemsyn's 1.0GHz enhanced kernel. In the end, try the rom in my sig, its based off CM7.2 stable, i **** you not my friend, first time ever I have enjoyed more than 24 hours of phone use on a single battery charge, phone never gets anywhere remotely close to being as hot as it used to, something about this build, i dont know but my battery lasts now and phone doesn't cook in my pocket after a phone call, check out log i have of how much battery life I got from 1 full charge
try flashing Jug's battery fix through CWM, it slows down the drain of the battery to a noticeable level where you can see it really does work and helps keep the battery from being pissed away after 2 phone calls
This is happening to me as well and only with this Rom have I had this issue. I guess I'll try changing roms and see if that fixes things.
i am using epsilon project v5 and problem solved
remember to fix permission

Strange as the concept sounds, I get better battery life when I overclock my Epic. At first I thought this was a fluke, since a faster processor (in my head, anyways) HAS to equal more power consumed. Generally speaking, this is true...
But, here's how a higher processor speed actually helps you reduce overall battery life. During daily use, your phone throttles up the processor to get something done, and then goes back to a sleep state. Mine goes from 100 to 400 to 800 to 1100 (my overclocked speed) as I watch it, with my phone just doing it's thing.
The faster it can get a certain thing done (i.e., faster processor), the sooner it can go back to a resting state, which equals more rest and better battery life.
That's it. Of course, this only works for daily use - if you keep it running playing a few games the battery life will most likely be worse. Has anyone else experienced better battery life by overclocking? I'm curious to see if this phenomenon only effects me
My setup:
CM10.1 - Experimental (Jan 20)
NS4G modem, with nitest kernel and patch (Jan 25)
smartassV2 governer/NOOP I/O scheduler
Overclocked to 1100MHz
hmmm interesting thought... i have never overclocked my epic but im just wondering how are your boot times with it overclocked... my daily use on my phone requires bluetooth on all the time and while i am at work i play music and on breaks i play games so i do go through a battery every 2 to 4 hours (I keep 6 spares on hand at all time lol) if it didnt drain battery but sped up boot at battery change would be worth a try just always been scared to oc cause dont want to mess up my phone...
Wow, six batteries? How do you charge them all?
I've been overclocking computers and such ever since I found the clock switch on my old Packard Bell 486. The trick is to not go too crazy and start small. For example, I have two Epics in the house running at 1100, and everything is going smooth. Boot times seem pretty fast, but the overall battery life is better than it's ever been on both.
I tried to clock one of them up to 1200, and I had a couple force closes and a forced reboot, so I backed it down to 1100, and the problems went away. I've heard that others can run at 1200 all day and not have any issues, so it depends on your phone.
I'd like to hear what happens if you do OC yours - my usage is nothing like that!
Sounds about right to me, the cpu isn't working on the same thing for as long and hashes it out quickly so the battery isn't drained as fast.
Just my view, I'm a slightly advanced computer ****.

Definitely dependent on the phone as you said, back in the samurai kernel days my epic could handle 1500 no problem...
I have 2 external charger that came with 3 spare batteries... ebay like 15 bucks or so for 3 and a charger... I may give it a whirl see how it goes... what rom you using now??? Was thinking of just the regular cm10 but I really like the center clock mod of aokp... but thanks for the advice I will let you know how it goes.

Isn't the default lower-bound clock 200mhz on most roms? Maybe the fact that you have it going down to 100 makes a difference too?
^Pretty sure that all ROMs run 100mhz stock.

While the default is 200, 100 and 200 really aren't big enough a difference power wise to make a big jump in battery life...

In the past week, I just upgraded to a Galaxy Nexus, bit still have 2 Epics in the family. One is on CM 10 and tje other is on 10.1. Definitely like to hear how it turns out.
Although this thread is about overclocking, don't ever let your friend that knows how to change the clock speed use your phone. I let my friend use my phone to play a game, and when I got it back, it was really slow, laggy and hot. Because he thought it would be funny to change the max clock speed from 1 Ghz to 200Mhz.

made the switch about a week ago. for me the battery life is definitely better. take note that the nexus s only had a 1500mah battery. the phone is a bit big but im quickly getting used to the size. this phone is also lag free.
thing that bothers me is that the phone gets really hot. mine hits 43 degrees celcius when playing games. im thinking of rooting to undervolt it.
The N4 is slightly more power hungry i would say but it is nothing a custom rom cant fix.
my previous device was a Nexus S. I made the switch when the S started to lag/freeze real bad and the battery started draining rapidly. I'm not one to switch devices every year but I'm glad I waited for the N4. Performance is buttery smooth, screen size is awesome, and battery life is excellent. Only minor gripe is that after rooting, it seems my phone sucks up more juice..but could be an isolated incident.

43 degrees is not hot... I'm not sure if you're talking case temp or die temp but put it in perspective - the SandyBridge quad core in my desktop PC doesn't throttle 'till 97 degrees C and the ATI GPU in the same system is similar (not that I'd let them get that hot, but Intel and ATI call it 'safe') Obviously this varies from chip to chip, and a CPU running at 80 degrees C is going to make a tablet or phone pretty difficult to hold on to but I'd imagine the limits they've defined are more about protecting the user and the battery (Li-Ion batteries don't like getting hot...) than the SoC itself. Also, the power consumption of a silicon transistor is directly proportional to its temperature, voltage and switching speed. If you let the device get too hot, battery life would go south quite rapidly.
Without undervolting, the Tegra 3 in my Nexus 7 will hit 70+ under simultaneous GPU/CPU load and this is how Google/Asus/NVidia shipped it, so seriously... Don't worry. I don't have an app that can monitor temps on the N4 and neither do I want to know so I'm not about to start fishing about for thermals in sysfs, although I'm sure it's cooler with a 200mV CPU undervolt than stock
I once peered into a rack owned by a client of mine to see one of the servers with a bright red flashing light on it... I asked the guys "how long has this been happening?!" - 4 years of running under high CPU loads at 90 degrees with a ceased fan wasn't enough to kill it, I doubt much will.
ok thanks for the replies was a bit worried that the battery life would be considerable worse but you've set my mind at ease, nexus 4 here i come :good:

With the right ROM and kernel, the Nexus 4 is giving me the best battery life of any Android phone I've yet owned. Admittedly, it was just light browsing and youtube-watching, but I got 7 hours screen-on through my last charge cycle... Which is double what I got out of my One X with the same kind of usage!
You won't regret it Just don't put it down on even slightly slanted glossy surfaces with no case covering it... LG appear to have invented the perpetual motion phone!

Wow, still can't quite reach seven hours. Most I've had is about six and a half.

Made the jump myself about a week ago, my Nexus S was starting to lag quite badly and reboot itself a lot. Nexus 4 is leaps and bounds better, no lag, love the screen and battery life seems a little better but not much to be honest, might try rooting and see if it makes a difference with a custom kernal. Very pleased with it overall. Only thing I dislike is the lack of a removable battery and lack of sd card slot but will have to live with it.
So I've been playing Arcane Legends rpg game , the phone gets hot on the top back of the phone . Anyone with the same issue ? Gets even hotter with a case on it's ridiculous Phone is completely stock 4.2.1

How much is "super hot"?? Install the app called GS Battery Monitor and see the temperature of your battery. If it is more than 40 then it's something to worry. Or else you are good.

Seems pretty normal, screen is on, graphics are cranking, its an online game too right?
Best you can do is if you were to be rooted you could try underclocking to limit the CPU, or limit it to less CPUs, from getting that high so it doesn't produce as much heat, or really as easily.

My phone did the same thing. It got very unbearable to hold. My solution was to return the phone back to LG/Google for a refund.

Hey guys,
i noticed my phone was getting a little hot while i had the navagtion app going.
im using the S4 flip cover and right under the back camera, where it says Samsung - I felt the phone getting hot.
Anyone experience this?
Me too
It's always hot.
I mean it gets hot often.
Of course it gets hot because the CPU is right there.

Loool really? Its always under charge when i play or the battery drops in 2 hours i disconnect sometime when it become too hot

Using while charging is fine unless it is overheating.
The reason it's recommended not to use the phone while charging is because it reaches high temperatures much faster and so is more likely to overheat causing hardware problems
I personally don't game while charging since this phone (especially i9505) gets really hot really fast

yes i know that heating its very rapid while under charge..expecially now that its so hot during day and cant dissipate...in may when i bought s4 had less problem

Almost every good phone gets hot now and then. My rooted S4 barely gets hot. I mean i flashed a great rom (omega rom) and flashed an amazing kernel (perseus) and played a bit with cpu voltages and i undervolted my cpu and it barely gets hot , and when it does , it does not get very hot .

I thought I was going crazy, but YES, the phone gets unusualy hot just below the camera.
I noticed this right after performing the Apps2SD update, and since then have been freaking out!
I am afraid that constant heating and cooling of this kind can damage the sensitive parts inside,
so I have been limiting my use of the phone in the last few days.
People, this is not normal. Somebody needs to contact Samsung.
There must be a software patch for this...?!
