Galaxy Tab 10.1 4g LTE launching on Verizon July 28th - Xoom General

This better be a joke!
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/07/23/confirmed-samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-with-4g-lte-launching-july-28-on-verizon/
The are about to be a lot of pissed off XOOM 3g early adopters with me being one of them.

The Xoom 4g part just got FCC approval. It'll be coming soon enough.
Yeah, sucks that it's late. Sucks even more that there'll be another 4g tablet out on VZ first, but Motorola Mobility is feeling it in the stock values.
Who knows? The announcement for the 4g update could even happen early next week, beating the 28th...

LOL! About to be?!
Tomorrow, it'll be 5 months since I bought my Xoom. I expected that getting LTE into the Xoom would be Motorola's number 1 priority given the unusual nature of its work-in-progress release, but reality set in over two months ago when Motorola's CEO tied the Xoom getting LTE to the release of the Bionic. That showed me that our Xooms weren't the priority for Motorola.
Live and learn! And what this episode has taught me is to never trust Motorola ever again.

An announcement doesn't mean it's in my Xoom yet meaning we will be at minimum another 2 weeks out.

Well, that is speculation. We really have no idea.
What I do know is that the Galaxy Tab is going to launch next week with 4G out of the box.
And even when we do get the upgrade, we have to send it in and be without our XOOMs for who knows how long.

Yea this hurts. I wish the petition would have been taken more seriously than what it was because honestly....ahh nevermind I have to stop this crying it causes nothing but fights.
Point is we or I got screwed at least in my view

It's not your fault that Motorola and its fanboys have no honor.

Seriously, trying to figure out why people are so upset.
Was there an expectation that the Xoom would be updated to LTE before any other LTE tablets were released on VZ?
When I bought my Xoom, it was because I needed an Android 3.0 development device. So for me, the primary purpose was fulfilled just by having the Xoom.
As in, 4g for me is nice to have but not the whole point of the purchase.
So you guys who are all honked off, is it because you really, really need 4g?
As an aside, this is also the first product I've ever bought which didn't have all the hardware capabilities at purchase. Has there ever been another product with a similar post-purchase upgrade?

Read the other post. Verizon advertised the Xoom as the first LTe tablet, which obviously is not going to happen. I bought my Xoom based on what they advertised. That has not been full filled so who is at fault? Its that simple.

They didn't, though.
They advertised it as the first LTE-upgradable tablet.
Edit: I do remember that Best Buy briefly had an ad which claimed first VZ LTE tablet, and that the sdcard was functional. The ad got posted here, but disappeared pretty quickly.
Best Buy has a terrible reputation for technical inaccuracy in their advertisements, though.

Heck at this point I was just thinking about upgrading my xoom 3g Verizon to the galaxy tab 10.1 because if u got your xoom thru Verizon and log on to your account it always says upgrade now.But I see no point when Asus will be releasing a tablet with Tegra 3 in October.

It's also interesting that the Samsung unit is shipping with a micro sim but the Xoom is full sized. I wonder if that will cause issues with people moving their unlimited data 4g sims into the Xoom to have unlimited data on them.

Time will tell...

So you have to wait a while for LTE - the Xoom is still better than the Tab 10.1.

lol *tears*
I don't actually care that much, but with the 10.1 LTE coming out in just a few days, I'm starting to feel the sting of irony. I'm still not sure I even want to upgrade to LTE once the upgrade is ready, given potential battery issues.

This is a bad omen. The only reason I can think of, to push a pre-order date, is because the release date or some other launch detail isn't ready. Last minute OS bug maybe?
You should also know that you won’t be able to re-activate the data package on this device whenever you like at no cost. An activation charge will be enforced each time you re-activate.

What a friggin scam. The whole benefit of CDMA is the lack of nonsense with SIM cards, and month to month isn't really month to month with activation costs.
Hopefully the delay is caused by the introduction of the WiFi only version? Seems logical to me..

I would be absolutely excited if the WiFi only was coming too. I personally don't see it happening, but hey if I'm wrong then by all means I'll be wrong and happy at the same time.
On the activation fee each time. I wonder if that's a Verizon thing or a BestBuy thing, as they said they don't want to encourage customers to cancel after the first month because they don't get their bonus until the customer keeps it active for 2 months or more.
It could be for the WiFi version. They pushed it back at Motorola's request, and Motorola released the detailed specs on their website today (no difference besides lack of 3G.)
We'll have to wait and see..

Most likely it was a Verizon decision. Month to month is essentially a contract and will automatically bill you each month, but unlike a true contract you can cancel at any time, no strings attached. The fact that they charge an activation fee makes it contractual, because if it were truly month to month you'd pay each month at any time with no obligations, like an MMORPG subscription.

I actually think you may be right. I dont remember seeing the wifi model (then again i dont check reguarly) and is it coincidence that sanjay jha said it would be around 600 the same day this is announced? By the sequence of events going on, I can see them delaying preorder 3 days to add the information to their servers. It also gives moto a little more time to ship out. If the preorder was delayed then the release date is probably moved back too. I know it can be alot of things but given the evidence starting with the leaked price, following the fcc leak of the wifi version, and sanjay saying how much the wifi version is (why announce how much it is if it wasnt near release?), i believe that is the closest reasoning to why it wass moved back.
sounds like good reasoning. hope that is certainly the case. I think the public response to the verizon version might have moto shifting things around a bit.
Actually, they confirmed both prices today. They had never officially announced the price of either until today.

yea, when i said leaked price, i was referring to the reaction to it. i think that spurred on to maybe an earlier release of wifi model than expected. of course it is just speculation but i think its also realistic.

The response to the Verizon version was very possibly the strongest response to a products pricing in modern times . This is the first of an army of real Android Tablets. Android is an industry juggernaut and all eyes are on Motorola to get this right. Motorola being an old-fashioned OEM might not be privvy to the groundswell of public dissatisfaction, but their partner Google sure as hell is.
Delay
They believe the delay is because the Motorola Atrix is releasing sooner then expected. As in next week, so they pushed the pre-order back for the Xoom allowing the Atrix to sell and take pre-orders a few days later for the Xoom

It seems this one could be either the SPH-D600 or SPH-D720, both of which have recently received certification from the Wi-Fi Alliance, though the SPH-D720 is more likely; the D600 shows WPS support, which is available in TouchWiz-skinned devices but not in stock Gingerbread.

Not really, had to read it again, but they are assuming the Nexus S model number is most likely SPH-D720, since the D600 has WPS support which is only available for Touchwiz devices (WPS is not available for stock Gingerbread devices). That's what I got from reading that sentence.
So it has to be stock Gingerbread. Nexus named phones has been branded to be stock devices. So if they did put customized Android versions on a Nexus named device, then they will probably get a bad backlash from the community for it.

Hopefully they take the time to add a second noise canceling microphone. Because the voice quality of the original nexus s was atrocious compared to the nexus one.
Pretty disappointing.. However, I remember reading a few weeks back when people were mad about the fact the original Samsung Vibrant was 3g and then they were releasing the 4g.. Samsung said that the original Vibrant was fully capable of 4g speeds.. So i'm wondering if its the difference of a radio ? I really dont know much about the technical aspects, im just repeating what I read.. I think it was on BGR.com..
Its funny though, I haven't purchased a samsung phone in years, then this came out and I jumped on it.. If this is the game google is going to play, iPhone 5 is going to be looking VERRRRRY attractive to alot of people, with polished build quality and little to no bugs.. Easy decision if you ask me.

You're exactly right. I played this game with Samsung on my Epic 4G and I bought a Nexus S because I wanted to feel like my phone was top of the line for more than a week and that was true of the Nexus One for a long time. It was stupid to release the Nexus S without HSPA+ support given that it the technology was more than available. I've been an Android guy from the beginning. I never wanted an iPhone but you know what? I'm starting to like the way regular updates and support for later iterations. You know what Apple does for people who purchase a current iteration of a phone close to when they announce a new one? They give them money back. What did Samsung do for Vibrant owners when they released the Galaxy S 4G (C'mon its a Vibrant 4G)? Nothing. They left them to twist in the wind and if Google is allowing that to happen to Nexus users here, I'm pretty done with the platform. I'm not paying money to a company that stopped caring about their current devices 10 minutes before they came off the line.
Its pathetic.

I can't figure out wth you're trying to say in that first line but I assume its something to the effect of you can't stop progress and I'm not asking that. I'm asking that they not release a phone with certain features and with certain features lacking then release the same phone with the features it lacked a few months later. There is no "progress" progress here. Sprint's first WiMax phone was released in July of last year; 9 months ago. Tmobile's first "4G" phone? November 2010; 5 months ago. Verizon was behind the curve but they are using completely different technology. When the Nexus S was announced there was already one semi-4G phone (T-Mobile G2) and one full 4G phone (T-Mobile MyTouch 4G). Where is the "progress" in releasing the same phone with a feature that already existed. If they released a Nexus 3 with dual core, sure I'd be angry that they announced it a mere 2.5 months after the previous iteration was announced but it would be a different phone. This is the exact same phone with feature that should have been released with the original added in for ****s and giggles. Its not "butthurt", its moral indignation. The same moral indignation I'm sure Vibrant owners felt because that was just as bull**** a move.
And how is this a faster phone? Its literally the exact same phone? Am I "butthurt" it didn't come with a dual core? No. I think its a little silly but I still love my phone, or loved I should say. Am I "butthurt" that the Galaxy S 2 does have a dual core? Or that the G2X is dual core? **** no. I chose this phone because I thought it would be supported for at least 6 or 7 months and this is a pretty ****ing clear indication that Google doesn't give a flying **** about the current user base.
Oh, and WiMax sucks. Its by far the worst implementation of "4G" and the company pushing it out (Clearwire)is in pretty significant financial trouble as is the company paying for the services (Sprint). Verizon and T-Mobile have much better existing coverage for their "4G" and have higher speed potential with existing hardware. There is no progress here, its just shafting a bunch of users for a feature that should have been included to begin with.

Get over it man. It's not a big deal, even in principe. I've bought 3 phones in a year (n1, g2, ns) so I am definitely not one to sit idly while my phone ages and be complacent with it. I just like gadgets. But this is just the way this industry works. I personally don't care if my ns supports hspa or hspa+. You'll never notice the difference in day to day unless you download gigabytes of data a day. Tmo supposedly caps you after 5 anyway. (i usually only use about 300M/mo because I jump on wifi every chance I can.
Also, google isn't dropping 'support' for this phone just because sprint us getting a 4g version. On the contrary the 'platform' is widening. Did the at&t version that passed fcc have hspa+?

You'll never notice the difference in day to day unless you download gigabytes of data a day. Tmo supposedly caps you after 5 anyway. (i usually only use about 300M/mo because I jump on wifi every chance I can.

I've owned four phones in the last 6 months (MT3G, Epic 4G, Evo 4G, NS all of them bought in the last year the last three in the last 6 months). You'll never see the difference between 3-5MBps and 20+MBps in daily use? Really? Typically, it takes my laptop (on comcast cable) less than a second to load the Engadget website whereas my phone takes 5, sometimes 10 seconds to load the same page on 3G. On WiMax (with a theoretical topspeed of 20MBps but it runs more frequently around 10MBps) it loads around the same time. On T-Mobile's HSPDA? It would be faster than on my computer. Sure, I'm on WiFi a good portion of the time but when I'm not it is often painfully slow trying to do anything.
For example, the other day my wife was getting fed up with Swype while she we were both at work. She wanted to use the keyboard I use (a modified gingerbread keyboard) so I tried to email it to her but the 5.25MB file just sat in my phones outbox for 20 minutes. So I decided to upload it to my dropbox which took an astonishing 7 minutes. I know the area I was in had 4G coverage and I know if I could have been on 4G it would have been almost instant. Its not progress its just bull****. Sell them a phone without a feature they want then release it again with the new feature and get them to buy it again. Its ethically wrong.

You mean they are a corporation trying to make money and not spending millions to give the world a big gift? If you ask me, no android is not prefect, what is? Nothing. It's better than the alternatives for my needs and tastes. If google has an agenda to try to turn a profit with it, they are no different than any of they other companies.

Making a bet RE: LTE update

Note: I do not have any inside information.
I am simply making a prediction based on my intuition and some salient details.
I wager we will see an announcement from Motorola/Verizon providing timing for the LTE upgrade in the next 2 weeks, likely as early as this week.
Anyone want to bet against me?
(Gentlemen's bet, no stakes)
i will bet, I say we will not get anything till the end of quarter three.
I'm goin for the end of summerish, late august early september

I was thinking getting it out before the toshiba tablet on July 10th would help Moto...eventhough the toshiba us 3.1 it has some nice features. Moto needs a win soon.

Right, then. Game on!

hehehe....thats funny.
They are still a corporation that has to report on quarterly basis. Any date that does not coincide with the end of a quarter is most likely wrong. End of 3rd quarter would coincide with projections for Holiday sales. A really good time to be ready for....the kind of things investors look at.
I'm hoping it will be here by September.
I will say that you are right, next couple of weeks. I think that they will start accepting xooms for mod maybe a week or two before the bionic, which means announced in the next week or two.

Likely it's the Xoom 4g with the LTE part pre-installed and possibly Android 3.2, otherwise identical to the Xoom.

Just accept the defeat. Afraid moto got us all on this one but just count it as a lesson learned
It can't be the Xoom 2. The Tegra 3 chipset isn't out till fall.
The part number is incremental.
Xoom LTE is in Verizon's inventory list. Xoom 2 is not.
How much evidence is necessary to throw a strong doubt on this being the Xoom 2?

A lot more than that? Maybe they are just going to eat the cost, bring in all of the "LTE upgradeable" ones, refurbish and resell them as 3G models, and ship out the newer ones to the poor folks who fell for the LTE roofie trick.
I don't know enough about LTE to say that this is not for Verizon, but isn't AT&T supposed to be getting theirs up and running [ROFLCOPTER] by this fall? Is it necessarily for Verizon?
It's just hard to say that it is anything but. The ruggedized tablet that was rumored didn't seem to have LTE, but that was my first thought. Either way, any LTE tablet that they come out with before providing their own early adopters with the "promised" upgradeability option is really effed.

AT&T is HSPA+, not LTE. The FCC docs show it heading to Verizon.
Seriously, you think the Xoom 2 would just be a minor Xoom revision with the same chipset? (Tegra 2, because again, the Tegra 3 is simply not out for months)
and LTE?
i say we get the lte update either the same week the bionic comes out or the week after
My money is on no LTE upgrade as the device will be obsolete and no one will own it or care. I also see a class action lawsuit again Motorola who will then pay us all 5$.

Do u Think Sprint Will Get The Galaxy Nexus? And When?
This was spoken about on another thread, they're saying never, since Nexus is prized for its LTE capabilities, and Sprint is deploying LTE for the first Quarter of 2012. After speaking with Sprint Reps a week ago, they also told me LTE is underway on their new towers, but that it won't be an impressive coverage until the next 5 years.

Maybe if it doesn't come out then next year the The new nexus with Jelly Bean will goto sprint when lte phones should be out already for sprint .

I've been told by an extremely reliable source that Sprint's network re-tool (including LTE) will be completed by late 2013. They are on an extremely aggressive timeline to roll it all out. They can't afford a long, drawn-out one, even if it's cheaper to do.

I half agree with this. I do think Sprint will get it, and I do think there will be 'better' options out there when it happens. However, I think I would rather have a slightly underpowered Nexus than a fully stocked Samsung/Motorola/HTC with the TW/Blur/Sense slapped on top of it.

Exactly plus get updates on time and regularly and have all the nice roms and new version of android for the whole 2 year agreement Then time for a new nexus
Google Wallet?
I think Sprint should get it at some point. Google is working with Sprint for Google Wallet and the only phone that does it is the Nexus S 4G. So why wouldn't they bring the next Nexus to Sprint too? Verizon, ATT, and TMo are competing with Google for NFC payments. I figure that since the Epic Touch 4G didn't come with NFC means, they're leaving that for the Nexus phones on Sprint. Just a thought.
I thought 4.5" screen was huge on G2; GN has a 4.7".
We'll need laptop style carrying bags for our "phones" soon.

Yes but the gn has the capacitive buttons on the screen that takes up some room so they are just about the same screen size.

I have no confidence in Sprint delivering anything according to a timetable. If this phone is really dependent on a network that Sprint doesn't even have yet, I'm guessing we either won't see this device at all, or, as others have said in this thread, we'll see at a point where it's lost all its cachet.

I seem to recall the Galaxy S2 listing Verizon and that didn't end up meaning anything so who knows
Well, to me it only makes sense that they include Sprint. I mean, the Nexus S eventually came to sprint, did it not? I don't see why Google would exclude a carrier they once worked with, especially if they want more sales.
I hope that link is true Zanderman. I'm pretty sure it is, but there's always that little bit of doubt.

[MZ600][MZ602][MZ604] Official Android 4.1.1 OTA Update Thread

The Android 4.1.1/Jelly Bean OTA update for the US WiFi Xoom is now rolling out. Verizon to follow in the next month hopefully. If by the grace of God any International Xoom variants ever get Jelly Bean (don't count on it), I can post those links here too if someone provides them.
US WiFi-only Xoom (MZ604): OTA Link from Google
US Verizon 3/4G Xoom (MZ600/MZ602): Waiting on link.

In hind sight, I wish I had gone with a WiFi-only model too. Alas, it is damn nice having an Internet connection on that tablet even when I'm in the middle of east bum****. hahaha It's alright though, I'll have Jelly Bean in mid July on the 8 GB Nexus 7 I just preordered.

See, I was even thinking about going with Verizon for the Xoom, but I then realized I wouldn't need to, as I could just tether it to my Droid 2 (at the time) for free, since I was rooted and got free tethering.
It's even better now, since I have 4G tethering on an unlimited data plan

Starting tomorrow, when Verizon introduces those new Share Everything plans, I'll only be paying for one data plan, getting an extra gig of data per month, and paying $10 less per month for it. I'm a happy camper about that.

Yeah, my buddy is doing that (he has a razr maxx + verizon xoom).
I'm on Sprint, off contract, hoping that their LTE implementation is ~decent~.
Else I'll be jumping ship to Verizon and probably swap out to a Verizon Xoom as well and do the share everything plan.
Oh yes we will get jellybean. Glad they are keeping the Xoom alive.
If I only had known of this android experience thing three weeks earlier I wouldnt have bought a Xoom 2 .
where is the link that confirms the Xoom will receive Jelly Bean? its cool, but it really surprises me as we just received the ICS update (talking about my VzW LTE Xoom)

Can't agree more. Xoom 2 lags, freezes, reboots and has still an ugly honeycomb....
Something else interesting...even though they unveiled the Nexus 7 tablet at I/O, I don't really think it's a true successor to the Xoom. It's a 7" tablet that runs in portrait orientation by default, and the stock ROM runs in phone mode, not tablet mode.
Don't be surprised if early next year we see a real, honest Google Experience successor to the Xoom with a 10.1-inch screen and the OS running in landscape tablet mode. Until that happens, I'd expect to see future Android versions on the Xoom as well as the Nexus 7.
I wonder how much of the UI they will change....
Utterly ridiculous that the original Xoom will now likely see Jelly Bean before the Xoom 2 even gets ICS.
Motorola will be lucky to get another dime from me ever again, and I used to have a lot of goodwill for the company.
I'll also only be purchasing Google Experience devices in the future.

The original Xoom is a Google Experience device (in the US anyway). The Xoom 2 is not. That's why the Xoom is getting the update and the Xoom 2 probably won't. It's no more or less complicated than that.
The international Xoom models (which are not GEDs) probably won't see an update to Jellybean either.

Why? Just like with ICS, there will be an unofficial (think EOS etc), 3G+WiFi build not long after.
I wish I had a WiFi xoom as well, but hey, I got this Verizon one for $20 so I'm not gonna complain! It's effectively a WiFi xoom since I don't have service, but I still have to wait that extra Verizon time.
I've always wondered why Google/Motorola/Verizon never pushed the Google Android Experience in their ads. It probably would've helped sales.
